5 out of 5 stars The best of latin music through Domingo's voice.......1999-08-10

This CD goes wherever I go, it is with no doubt, the queen of my collection. Medleys are wonderfully orchestrated and arranged and every song makes you travel anywhere between Mexico and Buenos Aires. Here, Domingo's voice is more like a musical instrument than anything else and each song you'll discover a new instrument. Honestly, I would personally award it six stars.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Latin American tunes beautifully sung and produced,.......1998-12-11

Domingo's love for traditional Latin American music shines throughout this CD. A selection of great "standards", beautifully arranged and recorded by one of the world's great voices. "De Mexico a Buenos Aires," written by Domingo's son is the one original song on the recording and is one of many highlights here. I have listenned to this CD countless times over the past two years and it remains a delight.

4 out of 5 stars Vivacious.......2006-12-20

I do think that possessing a fondness for the film helps (of which so many here have expressed), but by no means is it necessary. If anything, I find the seldom, more reflective, somber moments ("Mi Otra Mitad de Naranja") to capture the film's oft-haunting imagery to beautiful effect. The rest of the score, in my case, doesn't work as an album because of what it guts out of the film; it works because it's fabulous music.

Very distinct, too; I've never heard a film's score sound quite like 'Waking Life'. Really, that's where most my admiration comes from; it's not only an enthusiastically charming score, but it's uncommonly unique. That always earns points, whether or not the music is appealing; 'Waking Life' is effortlessly both.

4 out of 5 stars dreamy but refreshing.......2006-03-09

I bought this because I loved the movie, both visually and philosophically. The soundtrack goes very well with the movie and is responsible for much of the surreal feel of it. But even listened to independently it's great.
The recording is kind of raw, there is little processing, and it may even be considered careless, but that's part of its charm.
The sound itself is pretty original (to me anyway). It's strings (one violin, one cello and one double bass, I think), piano and accordeon. The result is refreshing. That's probably the best word to describe this: refreshing, and of course, dreamy.

4 out of 5 stars Quirky, Fun, Fantastic.......2004-01-14

I know nothing about tango; I got this soundtrack because I like the movie so much, and the music is such an important part of the movie's wandering, convoluted and dreamy feeling. I don't think I'll probably buy other Glover Gill albums, but this one is wonderful -- I often put it on while I'm working; it's great background music but it somehow manages to stay in the front of your mind.

Some reviewers have lamented the inclusion of Chopin's Nocturne on the album, but this CD was my first experience of the piece, and I love it. It has a totally different flavor from the rest of the tracks, so it provides a nice break.

The only bad thing about this album is that it gets a little repetitive. That's part of the nature of the music, which makes sense in the movie, but because many of the tracks have these climbing melodies that repeat and spiral ever upward, I find that after one listen to the whole thing I've had enough, and I'll stay away from the CD for a while. But that doesn't diminish its value in my opinion -- certainly one of the more interesting soundtracks I own, and I recommend it especially to people who've seen the movie, but also to the more adventurous of those who haven't.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating!!!.......2003-09-12

Recently, an Austin friend turned me on to a Glover Gill CD called Solo Tango. I liked it a lot and so looked him up on this site to see what else of his I could find. After reading the reviews of this one, I sort of half-heartedly ordered it.
Mistake!!! This is a fascinating piece of work. No, its not warmed-over Piazzolla as some have insinuated. The mere fact that it displays the characteristics of "new tango" doesn't automatically mean that the music will be a Piazzolla clone.
I've listened to and enjoyed lots of tango in my life, from the Guardia Vieja all the way through El Troesma to the present, and I can hear plainly that Glover Gill knows tango. The brooding melancholy jumps out and if you close your eyes, you can imagine being in the arrabal. Guess I'll have to see the movie, too!
Those familiar with tango of the 20s-40s will recognize snippets of some of the most famous tangos expertly worked into Gill's compositions. This is a great CD to kick back to and just enjoy. I've had it on all day soaking up its many pleasures. If I had to chose a favorite piece, Nocturna and Super Sport would vie for that honor.
If you have an open mind about tango and the possibilities of the genre, you should find as much to enjoy here as I do. I look ahead with eager anticipation to the next offering of Glover Gill and his Tosca Tango Orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous entertainment in itself.......2003-01-01

This soundtrack is actually quite incredible, an excellent achievement despite what some others say. The music has a distinctive quality that makes it entertainment all on its own; it hardly needs a film to go along with it (although the film was fantastic).

One of my favorite aspects of the music is that it doesn't remind me of certain parts of the film-- I do like being reminded of parts of films in some soundtracks, but this is great.
An exception is track 8, El Cholulo, which brought to my head images of the group of people just tangoeing, and it was actually a good thing to have a familiar image for part of the film. I also love the opening and finishing tracks, which are quite haunting and beautiful.
Simply listening to the samples in the record store, my face broke into an involuntary smile as I listened to it...
Enough said. This is great music. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars The classical heritage .......2006-04-16

The visible embellishment of this noble instrument was enriched still more by the Spanish composers, who following the traces of his contemporaries. In the case of Fernando Sor, Haydn was his musical guide, where as Aguado, could establish himself with major vehemence, due its particular style, based in the notable right-hand articulation, eschewed the classical patterns, being able to print his own music a flamboyant and refined character.

In the particular case of Fernando Sor, we have a wisdom blending of the counterpoint technique, an evocative mood from his own that, added the well known influence of the Italian composers (Domenico Cimarrosa and Giovanni Batista Pergolesi) and his beloved love for the Operatic genre, allowed him to enrich still more the lyrical possibilities of the guitar. Besides, unlike Nicolo Paganini, for instance fortunately did not transform the guitar in a simple device to show his overwhelming gifts. He used the guitar to play music, on the opposite approach of Paganini who used the music as mere device to play his instrument.

In the guitar genre there has not been most deserved and superb tribute to Mozart that this Variations Op. 9 based on a motive of The most famous Mozart ?s Magic Flute. Loaded of such imaginative freshness and enraptured inspiration you may notice that one of the Variations conserves an undeniable Italian flavor; this is one of the most beloved hidden treasures the guitar can offers us, which raise with special charm in the hands of this formidable soloist.

Aguado on the contrary acquired due his personal state of things, a notable adroitness who excelled by far, to Sor, so his musical approaches rode in opposite directions, trying to exploit at maximum levels the technical possibilities of the instrument.

Julian Bream makes a colossal tribute to both composers in this egregious and golden album.

Julian Bream's interpretation of this 16th ventury vihuela music features some of the most stunning and entrancing music of this era ever recorded. His slow and sensitive rendition of Narvaez' "Guardame las Vacas" plays like a dreamy lulliby. No one, on either the guitar, lute or vihuela has recorded a more enchanting version of this beautiful piece. While listening, I wanted to repeat his name in homage. "Julian Bream" The mastery he displays on this album is unmatched by any lutenist or vihuelist anywhere in time. If you like 16th century Spanish music, you will LOVE this album.

'a Tu Vera' Originally Recorded in 1999, by One of Spain's Top Line Divas, Isabel Pantoja. She Posses an Extraordinary Voice, and for Those who Know About Music, She's Incomparable.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful but not exceptional!.......2005-11-18

I love Pantoja and always will. The orquestra was, for the most part, drowning Pantoja's voice. It seems that Pantoja was either lacking the "Copla" strength she once possessed or she wasn't at her very best when she recorded "A Tu Vera." For those who are familiar with her early recordings, in particular, "La Cancion Espanola, 1990," can FAIRLY compare her voice and sound. Although I do like this album, I am not very impressed with the results. I know she could had done better.

Isabel Pantoja is one of the premier artists of the now revitalized "Copla" style of music from Andalucia, Spain. It is a Spanish "blues" and she is the Spanish equivalent of a Koko Taylor. Isabel puts on a performance equal to none, her fire and passion will leave you energized. It helps if you speak Spanish, the words are sheer poetry./// Isabel Pantoja es una de los premier artistas de la "copla" en el mundo. THE OTHER CONQUEST (LA OTRA CONQUISTA)

Music, as a universal language, elevates a film to a unique dimension intimately related to the audience's emotional response. It is not a coincidence that the most memorable scenes in films tend to feature expressive, hypnotic, revealing music... or silence pregnant with the absence of music.

In creating the soundtrack for The Other Conquest, we were fortunate enough to work with two exceptional Mexican composers - Samuel Zyman (symphonic music) and Jorge Reyes (ethnic music) - whose styles are quite different from one another, but who share the artistic qualities, refined sensibility and evocative power that make their music so memorable. Beyond merely shading or underscoring various dramatic situations or specific images, the music is able to tell the story on its own. As a point of departure, I first added music to the film by using existing works, which helped define the structure and dramatic intention of the score. For instance, the "final journeys" of Friar Diego and Topiltzin, at the beginning and end of the film respectively, are inspired by the first measures of J.S. Bach's Passion According to St John, to the extent that the camera movements in both scenes stem from the music. Then I asked Samuel Zyman to compose a contemporary classical version that became Passion According to Topiltzin, the central theme of the film, which marks the beginning of the Spaniards' attempt to convert Topiltzin spiritually. With the exception of Bach's Passions, Zyman and Reyes replaced the provisional works (much like the Aztec gods that were destroyed to make way for the new icons of Christianity), so that at times one feels the timeless spirits of Mozart, Chávez, Fauré, Penderecki, Bach himself and other composers underlying the original music. In the New World, imposing cathedrals were built from the stones of pyramids.

More than illustrating the 16th century, the music of this film tries to express the cyclical nature of history by reflecting artistic quests common to civilizations that have undergone - and are still coming to terms with - processes of colonization, conquest, and attempted spiritual conversions. In the soundtrack as in the film itself, the premise was to represent two aesthetic languages and two contrasting ways of looking at the world, as is the case with the Spanish and Nahuatl languages, in such a way that both artistic voices would be able to surprise and move us profoundly through the universal language of music. To attain this, music supervisor Andrea Sanderson worked closely with both composers (who never shared the same physical space) to create the film's own musical language. As the story of The Other Conquest unfolds, the respective music of Zyman and Reyes merge to become a powerful hybrid that combines symphonic and ethnic elements, including beautiful solo and orchestral passages, sacred choruses, corporal rhythms, primeval vocalizations, original pre-Hispanic instruments (some of them, archaeological gems in themselves) and the discreet use of synthesizers. Thus, a new voice is born, one which is much more than the simple juxtaposition of both - which is precisely what happened with mestizaje and the birth of the Mexican nation.

With characteristic mastery and interpretive beauty, Plácido Domingo adds the crowning touch by singing the aria "Mater Aeterna", which functions as a kind of coda to the film by celebrating the syncretic fusion of the Mother Goddess Tonantzin and the Virgin Mary into one of the principal symbols of Mexican identity: the indigenous Virgin of Guadalupe.

For producer Alvaro Domingo and for myself as the writer-director of The Other Conquest, it has been an invaluable experience and a source of immense satisfaction to have undertaken the musical adventure contained in this compact disc, where the extraordinary talents of Plácido Domingo, Samuel Zyman, Jorge Reyes, Andrea Sanderson, and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields under the masterful direction of David Snell, have all joined together with a shared artistic goal: to take us on an unforgettable journey that rewards the listener both aesthetically and spiritually. I believe that the music of The Other Conquest represents that fragile, unknown bridge that Topiltzin and Friar Diego dared to cross, at the end of which there may be a ray of light that reveals that, in spite of everything, what unites us as humans is greater than what separates us.

5 out of 5 stars Birth of the Mexican Nation.......2001-02-14

For a complete and thorough analysis of the music refer to the eloquent explanation by one of the composers, as noted above by Samuel Zyman. That is what hooked me into buying this CD, as I had not seen the movie only read his notes. This CD is haunting and oh, so ever enchanting, as it transpotrs the listener to other worlds and realms. The introduction is the the perfect setting to your trip into the world of the Mecixa(Aztecs) and the their inevitable meeting with the Europeans. The opening is erie and even without seeing the movie, the images imagined are primitive and one can visualize pyramids on the landscape and the approaching Spaniards with the introduction of classical sounding orchestral European music. As noted by the composer if one has not seen the movie it transports the listner and one visualizes from one's own perspective since there is no memory of the movie to rely on. It is really very beautiful and great music to listen to during quite periods or for walks in the woods, you might just see a jaguar peering at you or a Mexica warrior lurking somewhere. The songs that are religious themed are so wonderful, it is as though the heavens are opening up and the glory is there for you to behold. With song titles like "A Sprit without a body", I think you get the idea that the music is transcendental. The mixing of classical music and indigenious sounding instruments and noises is genius, the perfect blending of music for the movie. Since the meeting of the cultures was less than peaceful the music rises to crescendos at times signifying conclict and rescinding as a way of showing some type of resolution. I hope to find this movie and have further understanding of what can only be described as music that fuses and reflects the merging of cultures to create the modern mestizo. This is music from the past brought into contemporary standards, a musical journey into world of the Mexica and the Spanish conquistadors. The colorful booklet is informative with it's four paneled presentation that explains quite a bit about the movie. The CD close out with a beautiful number by the executive producer, Placido Domingo, who teamed up with the young Mexican film maker Salvador Carrasco to crate this movie. The song is a moving piece entitled "Mater Aeterna" which pays tribute to the fusion of the the Mother Goddess Tonantzin and the Virgin Mary to create the the modern Virgin de Guadalupe. Classical purists may scoff at this blending of musical traditions but it is a wonderful reflection of the convergence of humanity to creatre something new. Now if I can only find the movie.

4 out of 5 stars A blend of tribal and classical.......2000-07-05

The music soundtrack for The Other Conquest begins with low tribal chanting and a lone flute giving an other world introduction. This feeling continues as the next few tracks include more drums, percussion, voices, etc. Then a short and drastic switch is made: a harpsichord and a more Western feel followed by more of the tribal sounds. Throughout the remaining tracks, these two themes are tossed back and forth.

The soundtrack is composed by two men: Jorge Reyes writing the "native" pieces and Samuel Zyman writing for more traditional Western pieces. It is a unique sound to a soundtrack with the occasional blending of the two themes. Reyes's work evokes a great mood for the Aztecs (a sound I've rarely heard) while Zyman's music is really inspiring. His twisting of Bach's Passion is worth the price of the CD. Yet Zyman does not stay with a 16th-century feel as other pieces are more "modern" classical.

Note that this is a soundtrack, so much of the music is background and used to present moods. In order to fully enjoy this CD, you must like more "international" and ethnic music as well as traditional Western classical. So if you're looking for some good soundtrack music that's a little different, this CD is for you.
