Customer Reviews:
great performances of enjoyable pieces.......2006-03-11
David Russell is arguably the finest classical guitarist in the world, along with Manuel Barrueco and Paul Galbraith, and a few others. I have almost all Russell's CDs, and I enjoy them tremendously. Aire Latino is a collection of many of the best and most popular modern short pieces from Latin composers. Hearing his interpretation and flawless execution has rekindled my love for many of those pieces I once also played. Highly recommended!
It should have been earlier........2006-01-10
I mean the prize, of course. It's no doubt that David Russell is the best(not one of) when referring to 19th century(or style) music on classical guitar. In this album, every small piece is so attractive because of the romantic aspect in guitar, in
David. I own all the albums of David Russell. Although this one is not the best,it definitely deserve the prize, price and praize from guitar lovers from all over the world.
Thoughtful, Sensitive, and Skillful.......2005-08-08
This is a great performance for the very versatile David Russell. His playing is thoughtful and expressive, but also sensitive and not overly extraverted. His use of rubato is excellent on most tracks, and his constant contrast of dynamics, as well as vibrato, give the pieces on this album real life and emotion.
I had been performing 5 of the tracks on this album when it came out, so I can attest to the difficulty of many of these pieces, especially all three movements of the Morel "Sonatina." I can also say that his performances of these is very true; I could hear no incorrect notes , with the exception of some added notes in the first movement of "Sonatina," which I have since adopted myself for my own performance. His expressive interpretation is likewise impeccable on these tracks.
This record would be a great purchase for anyone interested in classical guitar, whether they are just getting into the genre or already have a large collection, or anyone interested in Latin American art music.
Transcendent Pleasure.......2005-04-26
Perfect! One will very rarely discover an album as finely constructed as this. The performer stands at the pinnacle of his profession, one who demonstrates mastery of the instrument and intimate understanding of the music. The selections are interesting, fresh and never boring. There is delight in the listening from beginning to end. Mr. Russell is quite simply astonishing as he unerringly takes the listener on a journey of unalloyed beauty. This is a disc you will relish again and again. If you love the guitar, you must have it.
A Wonderful CD!.......2005-02-17
A wonderful, beautiful CD. The fact that the music is all inter-related creates a beautiful atmosphere while listening. I know enough to know that this type of artistic endeavor is a collaboration; so kudos to David Russell, producer Rosalind Ilett and engineer Thomas Knab! I understand that this team has worked on many of David Russell's amazing recordings.

Ginastera's greatest hits.......2004-12-05
This is a great CD. Why? Because these are probably the Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera's four most accessible pieces, the sound is clear and cool, and Pons and his smallish orchestra play with finesse. This is, in my opinion, the best harp concerto written in the last hundred years, and the Variaciones concertantes Op. 23 is a masterpiece. You can certainly find bigger, splashier versions of the Estancia ballet suite: if that's your main interest, look for Gisele Ben-Dor's LSO version of the complete ballet (with the complete Panambi) on a hard to find Conifer CD. And Howard Hanson's old Rochester recording of the Creole Faust Overture is much more earthy. Nevertheless, Pons lays it all out beautifully before us, and avoids the slow tempi that characterize some of his other performances (the Bizet Symphony, for instance). Make no mistake, this is music to be savoured.

Afro Cuban Lullaby is worth the price of admission alone. One of the sweetest songs I've ever heard. The entire album is clean, well played by Hilary Field, and very pretty. Not a lot of fancy production, just really nice guitar playing.
Her other album, Ballad Stories is also very good.

Best CD of J.W!.......2002-12-08
This is it! I own almost all of JWs CD's but none can compare to this 1. The selection is the best of all my other CD's .No one plays Torre Bermeja like he does on this CD. He does a wonderful job on Duarte's theme & variations. Segovia's Oracion is 1 of the most haunting pieces I've ever heard (too bad guitar performers are stuck on Capricho Arabe, and Bach's Prelude. I wish they would treat listeners to less popular works.) Simply put, this CD is the best CD John Williams ever recorded.

Customer Reviews:
René Marino Rivero.......2004-03-05
This is a very good CD performed by a first-rate bandoneon player and excellent musician and scholar. This uruguayan bandoneon player has traveled around the world with his wonderful interpretations and this CD is a perfect opportunity to enjoy Marino Rivero's art and to learn about uruguayan music as well as to listen to his special instrument which was acquired in 1930 and maintainted exactly as it came from the factory in Germany.
I attended one of Marino Rivero's recitals in Punta del Este, Uruguay and whether interpreting Bach or a piece of uruguayan tango, he always shows off as a first- rate artist. All his CDs are highly recommendable.

When most listeners think "Baroque," they probably don't consider the lively 17th-century dance music of Spain. But after hearing Chatham Baroque's Españoleta disc, you'll be hooked. The quartet--aided by the percussion of Danny Mallon and the harp of Becky Baxter--performs works by Diego Fernandez de Huete, Gaspar Sanz, and Ortiz, along with numerous anonymous composers. Though these compositions vary in style (the danzas were composed for nobility, while the bailes were bawdier numbers for the lower classes), they're musically similar and all are gorgeous. Chatham Baroque--Chatham College's Ensemble-in-Residence--perform these pieces with driving rhythms and a great melodic sensibility, and, unlike some early-music ensembles, they never sound clunky. For lovers of early music from Spain, this disc and Jordi Savall's Music from Christian and Jewish Spain should be required listening. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Spanish Baroque Works: A Treasure.......2005-10-07
Most classical music fans do not associate Spain with Baroque Era music, which was predominantly music of the German Protestant Johann Sebastian Bach, or the English George Frederic Handel and Henry Purcell, and the Italian bunch- Vivaldi, Scarlatti, Corelli. But Spain during the years of the Baroque period (1600-1750) had its own Baroque piece of the pie sort to speak. Some composers here are credited as anonymous while others were most likely composers of the Spanish court or popular folk music composers. This collection features a mix of elegant, soothing and lively music, mostly for guitar, harp and strings. The guitar (then called a lute or mandolin) is very dominant in this particular music. It is gorgeous to hear and the various court danzas are a pleasure to hear. The music sounds fresh and clear, and seems straight out of the past. The bailes were considered dances for the common folk, rustic dances, and are thus stripped of slow-moving grandeur and are fast-paced and ebullient pieces. This is a must have for fans of ancient music. I would even add this to your collection of Renaissance Music, Elizabethan music and or Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances.
For a wonderful listening experience...........2003-06-11
...I would strongly suggest queueing up this disc and letting it play-- again and again. It does not get stale!
Chatham Baroque's most engaging quality is the degree of pleasure with which they play their music: they seem to live it and feel it like no other early music group I know. When I listen to them, either in the privacy of my own home or their concert locales, it is the sense that these fine musicians are doing what they love-- and I am enriched by it! The thrill they get playing the music is transmitted to the listening experience.
The performances on this disk are so clear, clean and strong; the addition of the harp and percussion is a wonderful gift-- arranged to perfection-- and everyone gets to shine. This is music for a bright sunshine-filled mid-afternoon; a day when nothing in the world seems wrong.
The wonderful flavor of the Latin style of baroque is something you must hear to believe; the quality of the musicianship will be obvious. Do not hesitate to get yourself a copy-- and I think that if you listen to it on a gloomy, gray day, it would bring the warmth of a crisp sunny day to every room in your house.
Rousing & multilayered Spanish dances from the Baroque!.......2002-11-29
This CD is Chatham Baroque's continental counterpart to their earlier and equally enjoyable release, "Sol y Sombra: Baroque Music of Latin America". Guest percussionist Danny Mallon provides spicy yet appropriate percussion, while Becky Baxter adds harp to the equation, an instrument highly favored by the Spaniards. Varying rhythms, Hispanic flourishes and the complimentary sounds of castanets and tambourine make this album a standout in the group's repertoire, and downright fun to listen to. Having grown up with much more somber interpretations of Baroque music, I smile every time I hear "Espanoleta!". Continuously. For 64 minutes and 17 seconds. (Hurts a little after a while, but it's worth it.) This is probably my favorite release by Chatham Baroque, though it is difficult to choose between them--they are all wonderful! If you like this CD, you'll also like "Sol y Sombra", as well as two lively recordings by harpist Andrew Lawrence-King and his consort: "Spanish Dances: Selections from `Luz y Norte' by Lucas Ruiz de Ribayaz--Madrid, 1677" and "Jacaras!: 18th Century Spanish Baroque Guitar Music of Santiago de Murcia". Becky Baxter, guest harpist on "Espanoleta!", has a solo release from Dorian called "O Lux Beata: Renaissance Harp Music", which is also fun, showcasing a variety of different harps and harping styles with an assortment of guest accompanists.
Viva Espana!.......2002-03-02
This music is enchanting! Can't find the words to explain how beatiful this music is. After hearing this CD about a thousand times already, I feel like visiting Madrid and Barcelona and just travel all across spain for a few days listenning to this CD.
Absolutely delightful!.......2000-12-11
This album of Spanish baroque music is bright, cheerful, intricate, and flawlessly performed. The only bad thing about it is that I have to fight the temptation to play it every day! Even people who don't like classical music will love this, so you can use it as background music for dinner parties.

Customer Reviews:
Clear Recording.......2005-01-07
I recieved this Deutcshe Grammaphon CD for Christmas, and let me say I was impressed as much by Segovia still in his prime as I was the quality of the recording. Most of the pieces were recorded in the 1950's, however the quality of the recording would lead you to beleive it was recorded twenty years later. Though I would not place the quality of the recording as high as a currently recorded digital CD, it is incredible. This holds true for both discs, though the German recordings are better than the New York recordings. This CD shows a side of Segovia quite different from the recordings and performances years later. Segovia's interpretations are much less embellished and considerably more nimble. Honestly, I feel this is the recording that backs up the reviews of those who listened to Segovia years ago and do not feel the later recordings capture just how great he was. This recording towers over other similarly dated Segovia compilations. I strongly suggest it.

Willie Colón Vindicated After 20 Years!.......2002-05-27
"Criollo", the controversial recording that got Willie Colón blacklisted in 1984, was re-released by BMG this week.
The crux of the disagreement was a scathing satire of Chile's blood thirsty, nazi loving, General Agusto Pinochet, RCA's management felt the CD was much too political.
Originally, RCA's tried to censor the CRIOLLO CD by attempting to eliminate the songs with political content. (El General and La Era Nuclear) After a bitter battle over the content, RCA (losing a legal challenge for the violation of Colón's 1st amendment rights to free speech) made a symbolic release of the CD, thereafter burying it and making it unavailable for the last 15-20 years.
This misunderstanding was the beginning of Colón's exile and blacklisting. However, it seems that Willie Colón's almost 20 years in the wilderness are coming to an end- historically, artistically and politically.
Today, history has vindicated Willie Colón. General Agusto Pinochet was arrested in Europe for crimes against humanity and now BMG has re-released his musically excellent and controversial Criollo CD. Ironically, it has been acclaimed not only for it's socio-political content but for it's musical excellence! A 20 year old production that stands above most contemporary releases.
Colón a tireless political activist ran for the office of Public Advocate of the City of New York last year, garnering a respectable 103,000 votes, making him a serious contender in the political arena.

***EditorsPick: This important re-issue of Willie Colón's seminal 1984 release firmly established him as a Post-Fania era solo artist that clearly embraced issues both political and humanitarian. He is here backed by a terrific band that has no trouble enhancing Mr. Colón's all inclusive pan-Caribbean style. "La Era Nuclear" is as timely today as it was then.
