Astrud Gilberto found fame with her contributions to 1964's classic Getz/Gilberto album, which spawned an instant standard in the hit single "The Girl from Ipanema." From there, she went on to fill many LPs with her winningly hesitant, longing vocal style; this disc collects 25 tracks cut between 1965 and 1970 for Verve. Among them are early versions of a number of Brazilian standards by the likes of Antonio Carlos Jobim ("How Insensitive," "Once I Loved") and Luiz Bonfa ("The Gentle Rain," "Tristeza"). "Fly Me to the Moon" and the Bricusse-Newley "Who Can I Turn To" fit the mood perfectly. Throughout, Gilberto is aided by lush, thoughtful arrangements, including one by Gil Evans on "Berimbou." This entry in the Silver Collection series is an excellent introduction to one of Brazilian pop's most emblematic voices. --Rickey Wright

what can i say? there will be no other Astrud Gilberto! she's simply fantastic! i love all her songs!

5 out of 5 stars I love Astrud!.......2006-03-10

I'm always reaching for this CD! I have a lot of Astrud Gilberto CDs, but I reach for this one the most. And she's so cute on the cover, too. I love the hair.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely Period Piece.......2005-09-19

If you find yourself alone, having landed at the airport of a city in the middle of nowhere, and you're taking a taxi to your downtown hotel, and it's dusk or evening or late night, you will be happy to hear Astrud Gilberto's pure, clear voice playing out a mood of pretty melancholy and longing, just for you.

5 out of 5 stars Such a sweet voice...but what's up with those violins?.......2004-03-23

Gilberto have, in my opinion, the most beautiful voice in the world of jazz. Sometimes, its sweetness and naivity almost makes you cry. However, whoever produced this CD done a terrible job: The violins are way too loud, and sometimes overcome Gilberto herself! A good voice doesn't need anything but a piano, and maybe a background band, but not a violin. Even if you put it, put it in with taste. It's a great CD, but I'd remix it to lower and soften the violins, because Gilberto is more than enough and should be in the center.

3 out of 5 stars Early Astrud, and perhaps too samey for one sitting.......2003-01-06

Her first records are meticulously crafted and intimate, but Astrud livened up a little later on, once she shook off the reins of her jazz-giant husband. Here, she's tightly-controlled and just a little uncomfortable and shy. I prefer Astrud's output when she got more ballsy and had input with her song selections. Many of these songs were covered by a myriad of artists, including Claudine Longet(one might say Longet was the French version of Astrud Gilberto). I thoroughly enjoy Gilberto's shaky English and the spare, jingle-jangly production, but if you find these songs a little chilly, pick up one of her late-'60's CDs(like "With Stanley Turrentine")and you'll be surprised how warm and loose Gilberto eventually became in the studio. 5 out of 5 stars Gilberto Goes To Japan In The Crest Of A White Wave.......2006-11-10

In 1969 Astrud Gilberto produced three wonderful albums for Verve. Nevertheless, in an paradoxically inexplicable and unjustifiable way, her two "official" records from that year, the published ones for the american and european market, still have not been reissued by Verve. Two authentic marvels ("I Haven't Got Anything Better To Do" and "September 17, 1969") that still are sleeping the eternal dream, hoping that someone intelligent in Verve does the correct thing: to manage his reissue by request.
The third album published in 1969 for Gilberto was her "Gilberto Golden Japanese Album" a magnificent (re)collection of special moments in which, apart from the impressive arrangements, there shines with proper light her only and unrepeatable voice of velvet capable of transmitting, from her soft fragility, the ripple of the waves in the distance, when the first rays of the morning sun so it seems to dismiss the night, a little before when everything returns to begin.
Fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars ¡Very good!.......2006-07-14

It's a cd wonderful. Astrud Gilberto is a sorceress. Your interpretation of "A man and a woman" is beatifuil. Your sweet, calm and melodious voice transports to the stars. It is one of the Astrud Gilberto's best works. ¡¡¡¡¡¡Excellent!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Warning!!!! The Singer on This CD is not Japanese!!!.......2006-03-03

Wait! Is that Yoko singing?! No. But, what if Yoko Ono had made an album that was worth listening to? What if Yoko had a soothing, sexy, cool as a barrel of Beatniks voice and wasn't the one who broke up the Beatles? What if?.... Sorry, got a bit carried away there. Astrud wasn't Japanese at all, but Portuguese. Why did she make an album where she sung in Japanese (at least, I think it's Japanese. I'm not sure, because I don't understand Japanese or Portuguese)? I dunno. Why did "Sex Farm" make the charts in Japan, Homer resemble Mr. Sparkle, and Jerry appear on the "Super Terrific Happy Hour?" We'll never know. I also can't figure out why none of these songs appeared on the Kill Bill, Vol. 1 soundtrack. Anyway, before we solve such mysteries, listen to this album. It's one of Astrud's more consistently good efforts. Her cover of "Mas Que Nada" alone is worth the price. Another highlight is the first track, "Street Samba." Astrud's fast songs, in my opinion, were/are always more enjoyable than the slow ones. Those on this album are no exception. If you buy the Golden Japanese Album, not only will you possibly like it, you will be instantly cooler than at least one of your friends. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars cool nippo bossa!!!.......2004-10-01

This is a fantastic cool bossa nova album of Astrud Gilberto sung in japanese language and recorded with Sadao Watanabe and his orchestra in Tokio in 1969. 2/3 of the record are written by japanese musicians, 1/3 are the best bossa standard of Astrud. The whole album is melancholic bossa with sweet and tender orchestration: no redundance, great chill out music!!!

Album Description

It's been said "You can't judge a book by its cover," but in the case of the album "Star Eyes," you can judge the music on this CD by its cover. Joan Bender is beautiful, and it is safe to say her jazz vocals on this album are even more so. Like a brea th of fresh air into the jazz scene, this double-album of 16 songs (on 15 tracks) contains a variety of jazz standards, bossa n ova tunes and originals that display Ms. Bender's unusual amount of vocal versatility. First on the list is her spectacular sc atting, reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald and Anita O'Day on the Cole Porter standard "My Heart Belongs to Daddy." Secondly are h er delightful interpretations of Brazilian bossa nova classics such as "Summer Samba" and "My Little Boat" that are in the clas s of the great Brazilian vocalist Astrud Gilberto (of "Girl from Ipanema" fame). Third is the cool jazz phrasing she evokes on "Time After Time" with inflections similar to Chet Baker and Blossom Dearie. Fourth, and most impressive, is her sense of swi ng on t he tracks of "Cherokee," "Lullaby of Birdland" and "Bird Alone" that many die hard jazz fans into Sarah Vaughan and Abbey Linco ln will savor. The influence of legendary singers on Ms. Bender is apparent, and she adds layers of feeling and her own style into the mix. Perhaps Ms. Bender has more than "Star Eyes." Perhaps she just might be the definition of a star.

5 out of 5 stars Listening to it as I type.......2004-11-26

I have a number of tracks from my CD collection on my PC at work and tracks from this one are the ones I play the most. After so many times of listening Joan's phrasing and tone still has the capacity to surprise. Can't wait for the next CD. I intend to visit New York next year and so far the only fixed point on my itinerary is Cafe Mae on a Friday. My only complaint is not about the CD but the fact that Joan has not come and sung to us in the UK!

5 out of 5 stars Prayer versus punishment.......2004-06-02

What a wonderful voice this artist has, as all God's children do! I pray for those who can only speak criticism, but not sing the praises of the Lord and the Lord's children. Although this artist is not singing church hymns, she fills every jazz song with soul, joy and love. Her singing reminds me of Ella Fitzgerald, a woman who also endured much hate based on how she looked and the ideals she stood for. I pity those of you who cannot appreciate the voice of a child of God. I'll pray for you.

1 out of 5 stars So good it's almost scary.......2002-03-04

I can't believe this album's sales rating is only 172,060!! It's so unbelievably good it ought to at least be in the top 100,000...especially with such a high customer review rating and the haunting vocal similarity to such stars as Ella
Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and even Barbra Streisand (in her more recent albums). If I could give it six stars, I would, but since I can't give it the rating it deserves I'll give it a 1, because it will always be Number 1 in my heart. I only hope word-of-mouth will be sufficient to bring this incredible album into the homes of the untold masses who haven't yet discovered the wonder that is Joan Bender.

5 out of 5 stars Joan Bender -The best of jazz phrasing.......2002-01-30

Listen to Joan Bender's phrasing-a soul level comfort with the substance of jazz. I highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Joan Bender a New Star.......2002-01-27

I just got Joan Bender's CD "Star Eyes" and I'm very excited
about this new star on the jazz scene.

Her voice is so upbeat and clear and also at times so sultry
and soulful. She has the best of both emotions in her range.

The samba rendition of "So Nice" and the bossa nova "My Little Boat"(O Barquinho) are refreshing and innovative.

In the haunting "Laura" and the oh-so romantic "Time After Time"
I was taken to another place entirely.

The rest of the album is very enjoyable, but I won't describe it. Surprise yourself.
