Lots of good songs.......2001-08-12

This compilation starts off very strong with "Como lo Hacen?" and "Lloraras," which are fabulous salsa tunes. The first disc is very good, perhaps because it represents "Salsa de Ayer." The second disc is not as good as the first. It has some bland Salsa Romantica. But it also has worthwhile tracks of Ruben Blades (although not his best), Willie Chirino, and Andy Montan~ez. I found "Lo bonito y lo feo," by Grupo Niche, to be a great song, but louder than the other songs, and quite distorted. This is a common problem in some complilations, but this is very jarring when you are listening to it on a shuffle play! There were a few other instances of this lack of equalization on this compilation, showing that some remastering may be in order.

The new recording of "El Gran Varon," by Willie Colon, does not match the original in intensity or orchestration, but it is a great song, nevertheless, and a very important one, and I applaud Sony for considering it as such.

Song for song, dollar for dollar, this is a worthwhile CD, containing many songs that are both danceable and listenable. I really liked 9 of 10 on the first disc, and 6 of 10 on the second disc. The other tunes are not bad, just not great.
