Cuban bandleader Damaso Perez "Prez" Prado was still riding high on the massive success of "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White"--the top pop hit of 1955--when he entered a Hollywood studio to cut this swingin' tribute to the capital of Cuba. I Also Love This CD.......2004-03-23

This CD, I believe, is every bit as creative as, say,
the Beatle's Sergeant Pepper album. Every track is fantastic,
and to my personal delight: there are no vocals to distract
from the highly creative music, save of course Prado's trademark
grunts, which you gotta love. Nobody grunts to the music better
than Perez Prado. Also, the CD is very well produced, the sound
is crystal clear. Even the great Tito Puente, I think, never produced a CD so creative and consistently amazing as this.

this music is truly infectuous, the more you hear it, the more you like it. This is without a doubt Perez Prado's best album, and Maynard Ferguson's trumpet literally screams out of the speakers.

Yes, a great album, but not "guilt-free".......2000-07-01

I agree with the above reviewer that this album is wonderful, but what was so "guilt-free" about pre-Castro Cuba? Please remember, Cuba was run by a vicious dictator propped up by our government, and by the Mafia. Some guilt-free. Granted, Castro is no enlightened leader, but he's a cut above Battista. Fortunately, Perez Prado had no stake in his country's politics. He was a great artist, plain and simple, and it is actually unfortunate that Cuba's politics hurt his career in the U.S. after 1960.

Absolute fun!.......1998-07-16

This CD transports you to the guilt-free excitement of pre-Castro Cuba. Perez Prado has an extremely distinctive style, unlike any other. I think his music is more likeable than that of Tito Puente, simply because Prado seems to take himself less seriously. You may find yourself laughing out loud while listening (and dancing uncontrollably) to this CD, for the music's joy is infectious. The only downside is that the recording quality is sometimes tinny, certainly not an improvement over the original masters from the 1950's. WARNING: persons with prosthetic hips should consult their physician prior to purchasing this recording!

Havana 3AM - a taste of things to come..........2006-03-04

I seem to be in the minorty here. I think this album is good (how could a line-up featuring ex-Clash and ex-Whirlwind members not be good?) - but... the following Havana 3AM is stacks better in my opinion. Even though Dixon (RIP) is not on there, and Simonon is not featured (and as much as I love The Clash), Gary Myrick takes the sound much more in the direction of Rockabilly/Americana and develops something very special with his own brand of Texas Twang. The album is called 'Texas Glitter & Tombstone Tales'. If you like the first Havana 3AM album, then search this one out. If you didn't get along with the debut, then you might be in for a very pleasant surpise with the second.

HAVANA @ 3AM.......2005-11-05

Post Clash project featuring bassist Paul Simonon is a flurry of Latin inspired alt-rock with regards to fast cars, motorcycles, socialist agenda, Ernest Hemingway (Death in the Afternoon), and American rockabilly, (Blue Gene Vincent). Given the relative success of this project, I always expected a follow-up album, (apparently, according to one Amazon reviewer, there is one other obscure album.). The music is exciting, with marimba slamming percussion, traditional and exotic rock guitar riffs, and bullfight inspired Cuban radio sound bites that take you away to a Spanish bullfight on a lazy afternoon. The songs have a tendacy to blend into one another in an album sameness, but the sharp and clear production always remains riveting and unexpected, wailing away in a crescendo of political angst and poetic desire.

Awesome Combination.......2005-05-12

The one and only Havana 3AM release worth owning and my god is it worth owning. As brilliant as Gary Myrick's work with the Figures was, combining his guitar work with the unique spaghetti western style of Simonon is truly inspired. Joyride starts the show up as one of the best here. Death in the Afternoon is probably my close second, but there are not any weak songs here. If you find any post-Simonon releases in the used bins, be sure to listen to them first. Buy this and enjoy!!

Havana 3am consisted of ex figures guitarist Gary Myrick, Ex Whirlwind vocalist Nigel Dixon and ex Clash Bassist Paul Simonon.
havana's sound is very bouncy, mixing rockibilly, Latin, spagetti western, reggae and new-wave rock into a nice on the ear's blend.
The Lyrics are ok, they were all written by the band togethar, there is nothing on the album that i'd consider bad, but there is nothing thats really brilliant.
The Chorus's are nice as you can sing along to them easily, the albums best moments are Joyride, Reach the Rock and Living in this Town.

I can't tell you how great this cd really is. Every song is different, but all of them are catchy and will keep you bouncing your head and tapping your foot throughout the entire album. All I can say is... this cd is awesome! Go and buy it and you won't be dissapointed!
