"Come and party with me, y'all," exhorts Bill Summers on Los Hombres Calientes' latest multi-culti celebration, telling you not only what the album is about and where he and co-leader Irvin Mayfield are from--the South, New Orleans to be precise--but also what their attitude is in breezing through Cuban and Brazilian styles, funk and jazz, samba and mambo and salsa. Though they have an agenda as world travelers, they're neither purists nor rootsologists; they're mostly after a good time and will toss anything into the mix to attain it. On "Carnival," their deepest and most sustained effort, their ability to synthesize styles is so secure, tributes to a pair of Crescent City legends, piano maven James Booker and bass funkster George Porter of Meters fame rub off happily on West African and Congolese numbers, and vice versa. Reaching back to the Satchmo tradition with his high, hard-edged, trilling solos, but flashing modernistic colors as well, Mayfield rides over and through the sound while Summer keeps things percolating on his usual assortment of percussion instruments. The hometown cast includes the Rebirth Brass Band, Kermit Ruffins and the Mardis Gras Indians. Party on, indeed. --Lloyd SachsCustomer Reviews:

Though he earned earliest acclaim as a blues traditionalist, Taj Mahal is no purist. Instead, he's an eclectic artist who finds common spirit with the blues in a multicultural array of styles. This album's acoustic arrangements lace the ukuleles, slack and steel guitars of Hawaii (where Taj lived for 15 years) with the airier strains of flute and saxophone and the lilt of the African kalimba. Within this follow-up to 1998's Sacred Island, the music island-hops from the Pacific to the Caribbean, as a blend of reggae and calypso influences highlight "Great Big Boat," "King Edward's Throne," and "African Herbsman." Taj and his Hula Blues band additionally apply their transformational power to a sinuously propulsive rendition of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower," as well as providing syncopated renewal for traditionals "Black Jack Davy" and "Stagger Lee" plus Mississippi John Hurt's "My Creole Bell." Straying furthest from bedrock blues, the lovely Hawaiian balladry of "Moonlight Lady" shimmers like moonbeams dancing across the ocean ripples. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:
The wistful blues.......2003-10-02
It's all about the vibe, here--one that, apparently, not everyone can get on board with. How can you have the blues on Hawaii? Or in the Caribbean? Simple. Not everyone is a plantation owner or scuba-diving tourist guide. Read V. S. Naipaul's great book, The Middle Passage, and find out what it means to be a "client culture."
Yes, there's a kind of inanity in much of the lyrics (although a good portion of them are traditional). Yes, this is miles from Mississippi John Hurt (although it contains one of his tunes), let alone Cory Bell or even Muddy Waters.
But you know what? Taj Mahal still works his magic here: The trademark vocal gruffness, esp. manifesting itself at the end of "Blackjack Davey" (easy to see where Captain Beefheart got his basic approach from), the raw edge of his electro-acoustic guitar (which has pretty much replaced his National Steel guitar), the loosy-goosy ensemble playing--all of which is perfectly suited to the island-blues vibe he's evoking here.
I, for one, celebrate this nifty transformation of the blues into an island key. And if you've got big ears, I think you will too.
What a waste.......2003-09-09
It's [bad] - incredibly repetitive lyrics.
Whatever happened to the real Taj Mahal?
This is the last time I ever pay any attention to a magazine music reviewer. I would definitely like to have my money back.

This cd gives the blues..........2003-07-05
The band is not much better in concert. I recently saw them at the Fillmore in SF. They appear to be very good musician, but there is no spark. All the energy was coming from Taj. He had three ukulele players, and this could have been a great opportunity to show mainlanders what a great ukulele musician can do with four strings. But, these musician only played rhythm and mostly the three chords all ukulele students learn in the first lesson, G, F and A. My son and I, the next night, went to a concert of hawaiian music which was excellent by Amy Gillion, Willie K and Makana.
I advise getting Taj Mahal with the Phantom Band or earlier material. If you want hawaiian music visit the international music section at Amazon.com and try some of the musician listed above, or others such as Ohta-San, Sistah Robi, Iz, or many of the excellent slack key guitarist.

Diverse and exciting, but ultimately fails to capture the energy it should........2005-12-22
One thing I can safely say is that it's clear this ensemble would be absolutely stunning live. But this is a record, so I'll talk a bit to it. Baptista and his band (seven percussionists in addition to himself) whip up a rather aggressive stew of multi-cultured music. Nothing seems to be left out, from Brazil to Jamaica to Irish to tap to Led Zeppelin. Boundaries between different musics are broken down and seemlessly integrated into the pieces. Standout pieces include opener "American Constitution" (excitable percussion and Baptista shouting into a megaphone), "Bottles" (the ensemble blowing on, yes, bottles, several of them), the totally off-the-wall didgeridoo meets dub workout "Matan" and Irish-ish "Maria Teresa" (a great spotlight for guest performer, violinist Mark Feldman).
It's a lot of fun, but back to my point about seeing this live-- it feels like a picture of the sort of energy that would be captured were this a performance. It's a good record, but it'd be a lot better if you were immersed in it.

Happy, bright, sparkling, brilliant: in all honesty, there simply aren't enough colorful adjectives to accurately describe the palpable, inherent joy in the music of Cuban master Ibrahim Ferrer. All the shades of the rainbow--and more--are showcased beautifully on Ay, Candela, a vivid, varried collection of classic tracks. The assembled songs span the 1960s, '70s, and early '80s, but they sound as fresh and vibrant as anything recorded in the last few years. Ferrer is a master of delivery, and he works wonderfully alongside the expert musicians and background vocalists. It makes for some great moments, particularly during the joyous "Mi Tonada Montuna," "Manana Me Voy Pa' Sibanicu" and the title track. Ferrer's best moment, however, comes during the stirring "Una Fuerza Immensa," a lush, captivating bolero that conjures images of swaying palm trees and slow-dancing couples. It's a standout amid an album of outstanding consistency. --Joey GuerraCustomer Reviews:
Great sample of ferrer's earlier work.......2005-09-09
It is important to note that the music on this cd was actually recorded from the 1960s to the 1980s, not in the Buena Vista era.

This latest compilation release from Deutsche Grammophon, hot on the heels of The Yellow Guide to Opera, consists of not only three CDs, but also a 144-page booklet that provides biographies of 100 composers, a glossary explaining 100 musical terms, and notes on each of the 42 tracks on the discs. Aimed, clearly, at newcomers to classical music, the three discs cover almost five centuries of music, arranged chronologically from the Kyrie of Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli to Philip Glass's Violin Concerto. Orchestral, chamber, and vocal are all represented, performed by a roster of celebrated names: the Amadeus Quartet, Martha Argerich, the Vienna Philharmonic, and Herbert von Karajan, to name but a few. All in all, a value-for-your-money way to either become more familiar with classical music or glimpse some of the treasures of the DG archive. --Rebecca AgnewCustomer Reviews:

Maestro Ernest "Tito" Puente has more than 100 titles under his name, some truly excellent, and none better than Cuban Carnival. Recorded in 1955 and 1956 with an orchestra powered by a rhythm section that included bona fide stars such as Mongo Santamaria, Carlos "Patato" Valdez, and Candido Camero on percussion, Cuban Carnival shows Puente at the top of his game, pushing the standards of the music but never forgetting the dancers on the dance floor.
