In 2006, the 25-year-old Venezuelan Gustavo Dudamel's star on the international scene is rising fast, with prestigious conducting assignments and this CD of two of Beethoven's most-popular and often-recorded symphonies. It's a bold calling card for a label that has outstanding versions of these symphonies by the likes of von Karajan, Abbado, and Carlos Kleiber, among others. If Dudamel doesn't eclipse those or others atop the mountain of Beethoven symphony recordings, he gives fine performances brimming with vitality and excitement. His youth orchestra sounds as good as many better known ensembles, playing with spontaneity and technical expertise. Dudamel excels in painting vivid orchestral colors and lending rhythmic impetus to the fast movements of both symphonies, surely a prerequisite for conveying the power of the Fifth and the dancing rhythms of the Seventh. But he does tend to exaggerate dynamics, following powerful orchestral outbursts with barely audible solo or section passages. And his slow movements, while decently done, tend to lack flow and energy. Still, an impressive debut, heralding a welcome new face on the international conducting scene. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars Moving.......2007-06-27

Somehow this particular version moved me. Maybe I was not expecting much from it, but it has some undelying force in the music that really touched some fiber in me. And that I think is the signal of a great musical performance.

5 out of 5 stars " A Revelation".......2007-06-17

In these performances of Beethoven symphonies, ones already recorded earlier and frequently by the great orchestras of the world, up and coming conductor Gustavo Dudamel, leading something called the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela, nevertheless produces revelations of a sort. As if rubbing the familiar scores clean of the accumulated tarnish of the ordinary, he and his energetic group, largely made up of former street kids, clearly put into fresh and welcome prominence that revolution in sound dynamics Beethoven introduced into music. Whereas soft passages still have a Mozartian delicacy and dance-like grace, forte ones have a thrilling power and majesty new in Western music. The transition from the 3rd to 4th movement of the 5th symphony, where Dudamel produces a wonderful rise in sound from near inaudibility to joyful sonic grandeur, is especially illustrative in this regard.
Though the orchestra here may not be the world's most accomplished, its limitations pale into insignificance before its skill in communicating an obvious love of the music being played. While soft passages receive what can only be described as lingering, almost lover-like caresses, loud and spirited ones convey a ferocious passion and energy which take the breath away. These are performances not to be overlooked.

5 out of 5 stars A Debut Recording For the Ages.......2007-06-02

Does Sir Simon Rattle's comment count for anything about these stupendous performances? He said (of Dudamel and the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela) and I quote: "THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING HAPPENING IN CLASSICAL MUSIC ANYWHERE". Make that in music anywhere, period.

5 out of 5 stars Two Powerful Forces of Nature Soaring Above the Heavens.......2007-05-26

What an experience to behold: A beautiful, young powerhouse at the helm of an incredibly amazing orchestra of young people who are product of an equally impressive musical educational system. The other part of the equation that makes this recording even more sublime is that they are interpreting the music of Beethoven - his Symphonies 5 and 7. Gustavo Dudamel, THE MAESTRO OF THE 21ST CENTURY, commands every nuance, note to dance, cry, sing - to provoke and reach to the inner depths of the soul. The Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela delivers each work with power, sensitivity with its exceptional form of musicianship and expression that leaves one yearning for more!!

Music is a healing potion designed to create joy and move the human spirit. As I listen to this recording, I am deeply reminded of the beauty and grandeur that creativity offers to make life a wonderful place in which to be a part.

5 out of 5 stars The flaming torch of the genius!.......2007-01-20

It' s very difficult for me to talk - as Venezuelan citizen - with meridian objectivity, about the stature and mercurial emotional power Dudamel confers to every score he conducts. He has been born with that ominous inner fire, in order to express with admirable eloquence, the oneness contained in the core of every Opus conducted by him.

The countless testimonials all around the world seem to confirm it. This prodigious and very young master of the baton (26) simply has no limits, so we will really hope and wish from him to lead us for unexplored roads into the enormous musical universe.

Bravo maestro!

Album Description

Los Amigos Invisibles (The Invisible Friends) have created the ultimate party album. Surprising segues - one after another - join non-stop grooves. Like having an incredible DJ at your house working for the mere price of a CD (or Cassette)... it flows and swings and never stops... one song/groove leads right into the next, no waiting. It feels like being smacked upside the head in a delicious way.

The New Sound of the Venezuelan Gozadera is a journey deep into the pants of rhythm. (We won't even mention the old sound of the Venezuelan Gozadera). Party music hasn't sounded this chic since Chic. "The Gozadera, more than a musical style, is a concept allowing us to use whatever music we enjoy and mix it up," says guitarist Jose Luis Pardo. "Like boogaloo, salsa, bossa nova, funk, disco, house, techno, jungle, merengue, New Wave, cha-cha-cha, mambo, and of course Acid Jazz." And who better to pull this off than producer Andres Levin (Aterciopelados, Chaka Khan, La Portuaria, La Secta, El Gran Silencio, David Byrne, Arto Lindsay, and many more) along with engineer Fernando Aponte (Masters at Work, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Deee-Lite, Towa Tei)?

This, their second album, finds the young Venezuelans stepping out from under the shadow of the Rock en Español moniker and giving it a much needed face-lift. "We are a rock band that does not just play just rock music," says singer Jose Briceño. The 19 tracks on the album combine keyboard driven dance-rock with elements of Latin music worked in. Whether it's the funked out bliss of "Sexy," the mambo lounge of "Mango Cool," or the trip-hop ecstasy of "Otra Vez" (on which Arto Lindsay contributes a bit of distorted 12-string electric guitar), Los Amigos Invisibles have created the perfect party album. Their lyrics tell stories inspired by real-life experiences of love (sex), relationships (sex), and more often then not, the taboos that accompany each (sleazy sex).

Formed in 1991 as part of Caracas' mobile party scene, the six members of Los Amigos Invisibles quickly developed their unique sound by blending all styles of Latin music with modern beats. Their influences are vast, incorporating the space-age sounds of Esquivel, the whacked-out funk of Parliament, and the beat-friendly Brand New Heavies and Jamiroquai. "We began making music influenced by the development of the acid-jazz scene and the dance music coming out of London," says Jose Luis, "but when it came down to playing it, we realized that our culture and environment kept creeping into our music. The tunes that are played over the radio at the corner shop or that we whistle along with from the bodega are songs that interest us... that music is part of our people and that makes it part of us. All we want to do is have fun and make fun of it all at the same time." Their first album, A Typical & Autoctonal Venezuelan Dance Band, was released in 1996 and received Best Band, Record of the Year and Best Guitarist awards in the Venezuelan Rock Awards.

I bought this one and two others from LAI and every song was great. I recommend them very much. I don't get tired of listening to them over and over!

5 out of 5 stars The Best........2007-01-18

I've been listening to the LAI music, since the very beginning of them, and everytime they bring new susprises with their music. I highly recommend this CD, and many others made by the band.

5 out of 5 stars Los Amigos Invicibles - best kept secret.......2006-02-08

They are by far my favorite Latin band. This band overflows in energy and talent. Their live shows are unsurpassed, and this album is the closest you can get to having that experience.

The entire album is permeated by experimental, funky beats, but has definite foundations in the classic, traditional latin drums and horns. The entire album is in Spanish and although I'm not even close to being a Spanish speaker, this is in my top 5 albums list.

You have to at least listen to this album, and if it grabs you, I hope you have the opportunity to see them live at least once in your lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars Fun fun fun funky fun!.......2004-01-20

Los Amigos Invisibles put the fun in funky in this album. It is so damn good. You can hear their unbridled enthusiasm in every note, and it is infectious. This is a great CD- and was my favorite of 2002 (yeah, it was released earlier, but it didn't come my way until 2002) There are tons of great dance tunes on it, and some goofy one offs, but it is all good.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous!.......2006-08-09

If you like both beautiful melody and rhythm of the Latin American sort, you will like this recording. If you like solo classical guitar of the supremely virtuosic sort, add that into the equation (plus a few excellent duets). These pieces are played with an uncanny rhythmic precision that does not sound mechanical. They are played elegantly, eloquently and with feeling neither overstated nor understated. Bear with me, because it is impossible to do justice to this beautiful recording with mere words. It is among my favorite recordings of all time - I never tire of listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent interpretation.......2006-03-18

John Williams shows, once again, his guitar mastery in this album. Nice surprise to have few pieces accompanied by a "Cuatro".

I consider Alirio Diaz' interpretations of Venezuelan guitar music to be the gold standard, and yet I was happily surprised by John's version of these pieces.

5 out of 5 stars amazing!.......2005-06-20

I discovered this record by chance. I had followed the work of John Williams for some time, but I never suspected that he had recorded Venezuelan music. John Willimas not just plays Venezulean music superbly but also catches the genuine spirit of it in all its sense.
If you like Venezuelan music this is definitely a jewel you must have. And If you haven't listened to it before I can't imagine a better way to be introduced to it.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2005-06-03

Yes!!
I think John Williams always wanted to do things that branched out from the 'classical' classics, but went silly with Sky. Here, is the happy medium!! He plays these songs with a fun-spirited nature, non-seriouso, with glissandi, fast tempi, strong rhytmic drive. I still like the Gerald Garcia reccordings (Latin American Guitar Music, Naxos) a real lot, but i think that Williams plays them in the true Venezolano spirit. 4.925719/5

Although four years passed since their previous album, these Latin playboys are always up for a party, and The Venezuelan Zinga Son Vol. 1 is no different. Produced by New York house music producers Masters At Work, the band's third domestic album is filled with upbeat salsa ("Esto Es Lo Que Hay" is a riot), soft Brazilian grooves, spacey funk, disco, rock and lounge. They roll it all together into street party of good vibes, sexy beats and lecherous thoughts (see track 14), but what keeps the Brooklyn-based sextet out of gutter is that it's hard to find fault when the insidious jams cause you to stop thinking and start dancing. Interestingly, the album seems to ride the arc or raging party: it starts on a promising but mellow tip, then loosens up in the middle part, then rides it out until there's nothing left to give. Los Amigos' best effort yet, Zinga is all-purpose fun. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars As much fun and "sabor" as day 1.......2007-07-13

Combining influences of Fania-based Salsa, bossa nova (Jobim) and deep house, and singing several songs in English (not surprising considering how much time they spend in NYC), with "The Venezuelan Zinga Son, Vol. 1" the Amigos presented their fourth work in a moment that Venezuela -their homeland- and the world at large very much need their excellent groove and good musical humor.

Still, four years after its original release, the album retains all its flavor and fun, much like all their other works, kicking aside language barriers. With Los Amigos Invisibles, you CAN'T go wrong: from their first work, A Typical Autoctonal Venezuelan Dance Band to their 2006 release, Superpop Venezuela, they've managed to combine music and fun in a way few other bands anywhere else can.

5 out of 5 stars PURE VENEZUELAN GOZADERA.......2006-04-07

INDEED ONE OF THEIR BEST ALBUMS FOLLOWED BY THEIR FIRST ONE "THE NEW SOUNDS OF VENEZUELAN GOZADERA". tHEY MAKE YOU DANCE, THEY MAKE YOU HAPPY, THEY MAKE MY DAY EVERYTIME I SPIN THEIR MUSIC. IF YOU GET A CHANCE OF SEEING THEM LIVE...DON'T THINK TWICE, THEY ARE "AWESOME" YOU WON'T STOP DANCING FROM THE VERY FIRST BEAT!! LOS AMIGOS INVISIBLES ARE MY "AMIGOS" AS WELL.

5 out of 5 stars Excelente.......2005-12-24

In this new work, Los amigos Invisibles, not only show his particular sound of Acid Latin Jazz, but they expose his maturity and versatility in each of the songs. This venezuelan group is raised as the only flag of his country in foreign territory, for the only one does not say. His topics reflects the good sound of the Funk, Acid Jazz and the soft notes of the Bossa in the topic "Playa Azul ". Indisputably, a great work.

5 out of 5 stars Best Latin band today.......2005-11-04

Los Amigos are, simply put, the hottest -- and best -- Latin act in music today. Their incorporation of traditional latin rhythms with jazz, funk and rock meld into a sound uniquely their own. Venezuelan Zingason continues the tradition of The New Sound of the Venezuelan Gozadera, Arepa 3000 and their limited release self-titled LP (which can be obtained via the LAI website). "Ease Your Mind" (in English, weirdly enough) may be the best track here, followed by its Spanish phonetic equivalent "Isyormain." And, of course, throughout the disc LAI never lose their humor or clever deviousness.

Also, if you EVER get a chance to catch Los Amigos live in concert, I guarantee you one of the BEST times of your life! They are simply SPECTACULAR!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome band, awesome CD!.......2005-10-28

I saw these guys live in NYC during the Latin Alternative Music Conference. They rocked my world! Live show was split up into smooth first half and funky second half. I was so impressed I had to go and buy a CD. This album stays true to the live performance, containing smooth and suave songs as well as funky latin grooves. It's been in my car stereo for 3 weeks!

5 out of 5 stars I was waiting for his Hits.......2001-05-18

Franco De Vita is a one of Venezuelan's greatest composers and interpreters. All of his songs in this CD are definitely his best Hits. There are some "Live" versions that makes the whole CD unforgetable, specially to his fans. His piano introductions to some of his songs makes me hear it once and again.

5 out of 5 stars One of the classiest Franco De Vita hits packages.......2001-04-13

Here is yet another Franco De Vita greatest hits collection, but this one is noteworthy for a few reasons. It features a full booklet with song lyrics, which are essential for a songwriter such as De Vita. His lyrics, particularly in such thoughtful, socially-conscious songs like "No Basta" and "Los Hijos de la Oscuridad," are among the most powerful and moving in Latin-pop today. This collection also marks the end of his relationship with Sony, as he signed with Universal Music last year, and a new disc is due later this year.

The 30 songs here are a good selection of De Vita's Sony hits, though the top 10 smash "Promesas" (from "Al Norte Del Sur") is strangely missing. And as this collection covers only the Sony years, none of De Vita's early hits are included in their original versions; therefore, "Un Buen Perdedor," "Solo Importas Tu" and "Aqui Estas Otra Vez" are live cuts taken from "En Vivo Marzo 16." So this still isn't a definitive De Vita package, but it's one of the best collections so far. And, of course, as any Latin-music fan knows, De Vita's music -- whether it's a rock, jazz, pop or salsa -- is among the most challenging, entertaining and enjoyable out there.

Album Description

"[Los Amigos Invisibles] has taken the rhythmic sass in salsa, the bass-heavy fun in funk, and even the note-bending bile in acid-jazz, and mixed it all up to produce an infectious beat. [They] have put the joy back into dancing, sending a warm current into the cold alienating waters of industrial strength techno." - LA Weekly

"We're a dance band," says Jose Luis Pardo, the guitarist for Los Amigos Invisibles. Tuned into groove culture from Detroit to London to Tokyo -- thanks to the Internet and a busy tour schedule -- the Amigos began work on their new album AREPA 3000: A VENEZUELAN JOURNEY INTO SPACE with a disco sensibility. Admiring French DJ/producers the band sought a heavier house sound in contrast to the retro and lounge elements of THE NEW SOUND OF THE VENEZUELAN GOZADERA. "The lounge thing sounds more Japanese," says Jose Luis. "The house sound is fresher, the disco songs we do sound more like that. The album is more electronic in certain ways."

Since their ground-breaking US debut the Amigos have lived a double life. In their hometown of Caracas, Venezuela, they've hosted underground club nights for years (the most recent called 'Super Sancocho Variety'). Then, insouciant single-entendre songs like "Sexy" and the doggy-style anthem "Ponerte En Cuatro" landed them on MTV and radio, and before long, the six young men found themselves pop idols. It wasn't hard, but their hearts remain on the dance floor and in the clubs.

Arepa is the name of a food that serves as a substitute of bread in Venezuela. Arepa 3000 is the third release of the Venezuelan super-band Los Amigos Invisibles.

Los Amigos, which had already scored big time with their previous two albums (the second of which was already recorded under Luaka Bop, David Byrne's label), did it again, but spicing up their "musica sabrosa" with a great sense of humor. Although it will be even funnier to people originally from Venezuela, you'll love the sections of people (famous comedians, horse race narrators and radio talk show hosts) speaking between songs. Specially contagious are the very tropical "Mami Te Extrano" (Honey, I miss you) and "Llegaste Tarde" (You arrived late).

Still, seven years after its original release, the album retains all its flavor and fun, much like all their other works, kicking aside language barriers. With Los Amigos Invisibles, you CAN'T go wrong: from their first work, A Typical Autoctonal Venezuelan Dance Band to their 2006 release, Superpop Venezuela, they've managed to combine music and fun in a way few other bands anywhere else can. Compralo y gozalo! (Buy it and enjoy it)

Disclaimer: Unless you get easily offended by sexually-suggestive song titles or explicit lyrics, there's no way on earth you'll dislike Amigos Invisible's first 21st century musical creation: Arepa 3000.

5 out of 5 stars Cómpralo ahorita.......2007-07-05

5 out of 5 stars Good Music.......2007-05-13

If you like the latin beat and instruments this is a good choice, smooth and sexy.

3 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected.......2006-08-10

I expected the CD to be better than it actually was. I first heard cuchi-cuchi and i loved the song, so i thought the other songs on the CD would be energetic like that one. It wasn't a bad CD though. I'd say 40% of the songs were worth listening to.

4 out of 5 stars Nice music.......2006-07-24

These guys have a real sense of music. The mix a lot of genres and the final result is a very delicious music.

Fresh, irreverent, and vigorous, Amigos Invisibles defy categorization. The band's base is rock en español with party attitude fueled by world-party verve. "Ultra-Funk" and "Mi Linda" throw the first hard punches with the message--this is dance-party music, mister, no milquetoasts allowed. Hard funk, rippling percussion, lounge licks, and more all come together nicely. There are even bossa nova grooves on the mellow "Las Lycras del Avila" and '70s funk rhythms on "Cachete a Cachete." The Venezuelan sextet breaks down barriers on the industry's maniacal need to pigeonhole music with this amalgam of rhythms, but the CD is easy listening. Charming, even after a dozen spins. --Ramiro Burr

1 out of 5 stars Profanity.......2005-01-27

There's a song on this album called "Asomacho." In amazon.com's 30 second clip of this song, the words "pinga" and "coño" can be heard, which are Spanish for d--k and c--t. It's disappointing amazon.com continues posting this clip of this song, even when told of the profanity.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT NOISE FROM SUR AMERICA!.......2005-01-24

Wild new rock-jazz-r&b-soul-latino-funk. Great sounds. You will love this and all there other albums too. A great new sound that just moves....

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2005-01-20

This album is straight crazy hotness! I love how the can blend the dance, funk, acid jazz, and Latin percussion in the music. Ponerte en cuatro is just hot! The funny, sexy lyrics make it really cool too! If you want something new and unique, check this disc out!

5 out of 5 stars Sexy.......2004-09-04

What a sexy album this is. It's truly sad that some of the best Latin bands are not very famous in the United States. I'm sick of hearing of Paulina Rubio, Thalia, and Ricky Martin. Especially when there are bands like Los Amigos Invisibles, producing such great music, with this edgy sexy style of play. This Album is just a joy to listen to. I recommend Los Piojos from Argentina different style of play but also very cool music.

5 out of 5 stars A classic of modern true latin-dance-funk.......2003-05-13

I dont have too much to say, the album speaks for itself, pure genious. I;ve seen them in concert in Margarita, Venezuela. New York, and Boston. If you can see them live, they are AMAZING.

1 out of 5 stars TRAVESTY PART II.......2005-03-08

AGAIN I AM FORCED TO GIVE 1 STAR DUE TO THERE BEING NO 0 STAR OPTION. I had to come back and say that Jose Luis Rodriguez sold out even more to make a buck and use these songs to give a boost to his pretty much DEAD CAREER. At least on this disc, the computer manipulation of the original vocals is more flowing, but still not quite the same as the original recording. Another vain, dry attempt to give live to something that is not there. If you want to hear these songs, there are dozens of CD's made that are wonderfully remastered and have all the original heart and soul of the orginal recording from the middle of the 20th Century. That is all, buy original, keep away from this crap.

5 out of 5 stars Another Hit!.......2001-06-23

Another superior effort from "El Puma".

Fabulous arrangements, seamless vocals, and Jose Luis' purr. What more can a fan ask for?! Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, it took me back to another time........1999-09-29

Great work! My parents listened to this music when I was a child and now I have come full circle. I have the previous album (Inolvidable I) and it is just as good. This music has class and it reminds you of an era gone by. Everyone that listens to my CD always wants the name so that they can buy it. Keep up the good work Jose Luis. Thank you.

Las Rubias del Norte (the Blondes of the North) perform the music of, among others, Guillermo Portabales of Cuba, Simon Diaz of Venezuela and W.A. Mozart of Austria, managing to make it all sound like it belongs on Cuban radio.

4 out of 5 stars The singing of angels.......2005-12-20

Las Rubias del Norte of Brooklyn make wonderful music that takes the listener on a pleasant journey through past popular styles that our grandparents would surely recognize, all the while making it new through the unforced, unfiltered purity of the delivery of lead vocalists Allysa Lamb and Emily Hurst. These two weave pure magic from their hoary catalogue of ancient rumbas, Cuban pop hits, and dusty old cowboy tunes. Against lithe arrangements from the band their light pure sopranos twine and trill like spilled silver. This is their first record, self produced, but it doesn't sound like it. They've obviously been paying their dues and honing their very special sound and songbook. The only reason for the lack of a fifth star is the relative brevity of this recording clocking in at around 30 or so minutes, that and that one of the tracks unwisely turns the vocal over to one of the guys in the band. An upcoming release is soon to follow as they show signs of outgrowing the tiny Brooklyn bar where they have been a fixture. They've got a lot of great old songs up their sleeves and the band supports our two angels superbly. Watch 'em. They're gonna make it!

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!! It had to be Franco de Vita!!.......2007-01-07

Franco de Vita has been my very favorite singer and composer ever. My first boyfriend gave me as a present for my birthday Franco's first album, and I have followed his career ever since. Unlike other singers, he's never disappointed me. His songs are thoughtful, moving, very powerful and sensitive at the same time.

This album features lot of his classic hits and some of the newer ones like "Ay Dios", "Tu de que vas", "Te veo venir soledad", it's simply fabulous! It also includes a surprise DVD with Franco's live concert in Caracas, which to me, it's the best part of the deal, not only because I was not expecting it but also because his performance is inspiring and his spontaneity is contagious.

This is a must have for Franco's fans and for all Spanish pop fans.
