Though folksinger Richard Shindell writes most of his own material, here he puts his conceptual and interpretive stamp on a wide range of songs by others. His rendition of "Señor (Tales of Yankee Power)" transforms that Dylan obscurity into one of the better Dylan covers, highlighted by Shindell's otherworldly slide guitar. That song finds a thematic partner in "Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos)," by Dylan's earliest major influence, Woody Guthrie. From Robbie Robertson's "Acadian Driftwood" and A.P. Carter's "The Storms Are on the Ocean" to a mandolin-driven rendition of Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." and Peter Gabriel's "Mercy Street" (the only cover that doesn't really work, as it strains the upper register of Shindell's craggy baritone), the material has a strong sense of place and displacement. (As the artist suggests in his brief notes, every one of these songs has a narrator who may be quite distinct from the songwriter.) Among those providing superb support are guitarist Richard Thompson (on two cuts), bassist Viktor Krauss, former Dylan sideman Larry Campbell (on electric and steel guitars), and Lucy Kaplansky and Eliza Gilkyson on harmonies. --Don McLeese

Another excellent compilation by Richard Shindell. If you enjoy his music, this CD will not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars His Best Work to Date .......2007-05-23

This is an extremely accomplished work of covers and I can't seem to get enough of this CD. It is a staple CD in my car and I listen to it on my commute to and from work. I never tire of it. This CD is thoroughly enjoyable and the musicanship, vocals, and choice of songs here is truely its strong points. I am fairly new to Richard's music, but I traveled 5 hours to Asheville, NC a short while back to see him in concert. I was not disappointed. I have since purchased "Vuelta" and "Paterson" and the "Cry Cry Cry" disc. All those are excellent as well and highly recommended. This I think is his best CD to date and you just can't go wrong with it.

5 out of 5 stars Richard in his element.......2007-05-13

Having hear RS in concert a number of times over the years, it always has been a wonderful experience to hear him re-interpret his own songs. So it is an easy bridge to hearing his covers of some of the songs he likes best/has been influenced by most. As far as production and musical maturity, this project is miles ahead of the "Cry, Cry, Cry" CD, however enjoyable that was in places. RS clearly feels a close bond with these songs, and his approach is to cherish them and explore them as narratives. Arrangements are typically simple and unobtrusive, but playing throughout is exemplary. RS' voice continues to develop depth and richness, and this is a fine example of a top notch song writer pouring his heart into honoring those that helped pave the way for him.

5 out of 5 stars Rabbit Dance.......2007-08-02

Amazing, creative work. A monumental treat for the eyes and ears...I was introduced to Decade via a friend on a jet and am completely hooked. Thought I had seen and heard it all before, but Rabbit opens new doors. Worth twice the price.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for the casual listener.......2007-07-29

According to all other reviews by hardcore fans, everyone seems to be dissapointed that this is all material they have heard before. So what about the casual Rabbit in the Moon fan, who hasn't heard many of these songs? I enjoyed the Floorida remix album as well as some other remixes RITM has done, but have yet to attend a live show of theirs. Therefore, coming into this album without any pretenses, I am pleased to say it is just what I was hoping for. Dark and deep, juicy with their signature tech/electro sound. This album really doesn't leave anything to be desired, especially with the vocals by Bunny. I think for the casual listener who hasn't heard all of these songs, this album will be a better experience. Still, even for those who have heard and seen it already, isn't it great to finally have all of the original material all on one remastered disc, plus an amazing DVD?

5 out of 5 stars Long Awaited, and a Fantastic DVD.......2007-07-16

As a DJ, I have had access to Rabbit in the Moon material over the past 10 years, as it was released single-by-single. Like many of their fans, I was hooked on Dave Christophere's audio wizardry with the haunting and evolving O.O.B.E. - (mistakenly labeled "Outer" Body Experience on the liner notes - though not a surprising tactic for a new remix.). Several of the track on this new album have been previously released as singles, and/or have been included in their live performances. Though some may find this a bit anticlimactic, it should be noted that everything has been remastered to a degree that it actually does seem new and fresh.

As others have noted, RITM is best experienced as a live act. The music is brought to life through the larger-than-life, kabuki theater-like performance and vocalizations of Bunny (Steve Eachon). Perhaps RITM are destined to become the Grateful Dead of modern Techno, as every show is different, and devoted fans follow their shows, and see them again and again, noting the slight changes to the mixes and song selections, and the ever evolving and exciting Bunny Experience.

With that in mind, it is only natural that they would include a DVD that included some of their live material, along with new and creative original video along with the CD.

The quality of the video and audio on this package is flawless and very entertaining for old and new Rabbit fans. One can only hope that they gather momentum from this release to tour heavily, and release another album of completely new material within the next 18 months. The newer material also has more vocals by Bunny, which I find to be an excellent trend which they should continue to develop in their music and live shows.

5 out of 5 stars A great release from a the legendary RITM!.......2007-07-13

I think this is a *fanstatic* release, mostly because of the DVD content, but I like the CD a lot as well. Being the fan that I am, I couldn't give this any less than 5 stars for that DVD content being what it is. Yes, there is some dated stuff on the album, but it is called "Decade", and the song "Deeper" alone justifies that title. I see some of the other reviewers who are fans, but giving it low-star reviews, that's really too bad. It may be because they were expecting a full new CD of all new material, and didn't get that. Still, I see that those of us who "know the deal", so to speak, know that the essence of Rabbit In The Moon is the live show, I think the DVD content gives a pretty close approximation to what it's actually like to see them live. But tell me, who, of the RITM fans among us, especially those who have seen them live in the least year, didn't FLIP out when they were listening to the "Decade" CD and heard the phrase "Look into the eye!" for the first time, on track 8.. with memories flooding in of Bunny with his TV-on-a-stick?? I know I did. And that song is followed by the AMAZING rendition of David Bowie's "Let's Dance", followed by Deeper (which is admittedly old
but is a classic and couldn't be excluded) but then there's a brand new mix of O.B.E. that, correct me if I'm wrong, has never been released before. (And I own the original Phases O.B.E. 12" record). I love the new mix of that song, and I think it's a great album, even though every single song doesn't thrill me. But even with this CD, some of the older RITM songs that I never really liked much before, like Dubbasex for example, listened carefully and given them another chance, and found they are actually very subtle and beautiful songs.

There is more newer material on the album than some reviewers let on, in fact well over half of it is new. There are a few ommissions, IMO, for example I would have liked to see "Electro Accupuncture" on this CD, but then again that has been released before on a CD, still I think it would have fit in well here though as well. I love the DVD the most, because it reminds me why I've been such a huge fan for so many years, with probably about 7 shows under my belt. To all the fans out there, buy this album! Show your support! Remember the old Zen Festial 96-97 shows, with Bunny, in his disco-ball suit, being lowered by a cable from the ceiling! remember how you felt at those times. They have earned our suport! To those folks new to the electronica genre, this is a good glimpse into understanding the engima that is Rabbit in the Moon... RITM so much more than can possible be described in one album, album review, DVD, magazine article, or antyhing else. There's a whole history and culture behind these guys'one-of-a-kind stlye of performance art, and I think this release captures the essence of it almost as best you could with the amount of material provided. Buy it for the DVD, but then take the audio CD, put in in your car stereo, put on track 8, and crank it up!

3 out of 5 stars Great yet lacking.......2007-07-12

So, if your a rabbit head like me, you've probably heard most of these tracks at their shows. So why is this CD a great purchase? Quite simply because you are a rabbit head and they need our support. If you're new to Rabbit in the Moon then you need to hear what the music is about. The really cool feature is that in the DVD each suit comes with an explanation which will help new listeners/show goers to understand the meaning of the show as a whole and the suits individually. Are there tracks missing? Absolutely. The now famous jungle track used for the dragon slaying sequence is missing, so is the old light suit track which is a favorite amongst show goers. However, the single most significant fact about this release is the release it self. If this goes good, we will see a new Rabbit in the Moon CD sometime soon. Remember, this is their first attempt at this, so lets support them. After all, they have been connecting to us for over a decade, the least we can do is buy the CD.

Amazon.com's Best of 1999

After having covered the sensual nightclub material of Miss Perfumado and Cesaria Evora, Evora left us wondering where she could possibly go next. She returned with Café Atlantico, blowing us away with her luscious voice and widened repertoire of Brazilian- and Cuban-influenced music. With touches of string accompaniment, Evora's music dances with light energy and woos with the classic morna sound, leaving us to ponder what amazing music she'll master on her next album. --Karen K. Hugg

Amazon.com

Unlike Mar Azul or earlier releases Miss Perfumado and Cesaria Evora, which were largely collections of the Portuguese-influenced song form called morna, Café Atlantico finds Evora singing Cuban and Brazilian traditionals. Evora's voice is as smooth as ever, but it's a little odd to hear her croon to a bolero or danzon. Still, the connection fits snugly as this release is a tribute to Evora's hometown of Mindelo, a port on the Cape Verdean island of São Vicente where sailors from Portugal, Argentina, Brazil, and the Caribbean cross-pollinated the music of Cape Verde. On Café Atlantico Evora croons with her usual beauty, poise, and melancholia. Thankfully, instrumental accompaniment again includes the piano and acoustic guitar and bass, but with the flavorful addition of light (and only occasional) orchestral accompaniment, which highlights the creamy richness of this lovely Latin music. Café Atlantico takes a tasteful, innovative step in broadening Evora's repertoire, and its plaintive grace and relaxed romanticism emphasizes what the world has now come to realize: Cesaria Evora is the greatest living singer of our time. --Karen Karleski

5 out of 5 stars Amongst the best.......2007-02-26

This lady has an awesome voice, no wonder they call her the barefoot opera singer. Cesaria could actually move you with just her voice and without the music. She is one of my favo rite singers. Relaxing and moving you will never get tired of this cd and will entertain you for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars African influenced music.......2005-12-30

This cd is magnificient. It shows how much Africa has played a part in Latin music today. I especially love track number 3. Hope everyonce checks out this cd.

4 out of 5 stars What a swing!.......2004-04-17

This is a great CD. I learned about Cesaria Evora in a television documentary and ordered the CD from Amazon. We are still tapping our feet and swinging to African Samba and ballads!

If you like Samba and a melodious African air, this is for you. Evora's voice is deep and sensous. A new listening experience.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious Rhythms.......2003-11-09

Evora has a beautifully intense, direct vocal style and an ability to merge with rhythms both slow and fast. In Cafe Atlantico she sings a range of material from slow, lamenting love songs to samba-speed chants, all exciting and absorbing. The sequence and sound quality make this a thoroughly enjoyable compilation, leaving the listener wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars Her best.......2003-08-14

Beautiful - you don't need to know what she is saying. One of those CDs that you can listen to forever. We have lost it twice now, and replaced it.

This compilation of Cesaria's songs brings many successes of her most famous CD's, such as Cafe Atlantico. Her voice is just amazing and with the rythmin makes you feel as if you were on one of those beaches of Cape Verde. This is more than recommended, specially for the ones that are planning to buy the first CD of this singer.

The artists gathered together here hail from nations and cultures noted for the growing and export of coffee. As with this CD's companion release, Music from the Tea Lands, one senses the possibility of lucrative product tie-ins, but part of the proceeds from the album are earmarked for charity and any catchy idea that gets the music out there is a good thing. Like the luscious drink itself, the tunes come in many intensities and flavors, ranging from a light-as-air ditty from Peru, to the more complex vocal stylings of Colombia's Claudia Gomez, to Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca's earthy Afro-Cuban Congolese rumba. The album is a lively and fascinating travelogue, making landfall in Cuba, Kenya, Brazil, Uganda, Mexico, Zimbabwe, Costa Rica, Hawaii, and Peru. As with many other Putumayo projects, aside from its musical pleasures, this set would make an entertaining and educational experience for younger family members. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars Suprise!.......2007-01-25

Having just gotten into collecting world music rather than just listening to it on the radio....I am more than pleased with my latest acquisition of Coffee Lands music. The music on this CD is totally mellow. Every song on it is a keeper. If you want something different, this is a CD to consider.

3 out of 5 stars How can you have this CD w/o an Ethiopian contribution.......2007-01-14

Am I missing something? This CD does not have any Ethiopian music? I'm a bit perplexed by that seeing as coffee originated in Ethiopia.

2 out of 5 stars Not strong enough-this compilation is decaf.......2006-06-15

If this album is like coffee,it's decaf. It lacks the punch to keep one awake for an early morning drive.I'd be asleep at the wheel.

I used to have this CD,but I took it to a used CD store.

Its few highlights are Susana Baca,Ernest Ranglin,Thomas Mapfumo,James 'Bla'Pahinui&Ayub Ogada. The rest are easy-listening Buena Vista Social Club.

When it comes to Putumayo's themed compilations,I reccomend "Gardens of Eden" (sadly,it's out of print),"Music from the Tea Lands"(EXCELLENT!),"Asian Lounge".I am looking forward to "Music from the Wine Lands"--considering I live in the Wine Country.Hopefully,"Music from the Wine Lands" won't be snooze-inducing like this one.

4 out of 5 stars Chill out with a cup of coffee or a Mojito.............2005-08-05

Good Putumayo CD. Several very good tracks on this CD. 'Guajira Bonita' is fantastic, and reminds me of my trip to Peru hiking the Inca trail. Tracks 2, 3 are good as well, and then proceed to the wonderful Susana Baca with her bold, beautiful voice on 'Maria Lando'. 'Below the Bassline' is a wonderfully mellow Reggae sounding instrumental track that brings me back to all carribbean trips. 'Dilema' reminds me of my salsa adventure to Cuba, and 'Esa Noche' is a very good instrumental track with fantastic guitar that makes me yearn for returning to Mexico City or Oaxaca. Track 9, 10 are good as well. 'Este Son' will help you chill out with your cup of coffee. Highly recommend this CD if you enjoy Latin music, as well as international music. The pamphlet submitted with the CD about the artists is informtive and only adds to the enjoyment of the CD. A Putumayo Must!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best world music compilataions I've heard.......2004-01-25

The Dirty South is the sixth album by Muscle Shoals, Alabama-based Drive-By Truckers. While previous Southern rock bands have celebrated certain regional mythologies, this quintet revels in the towering glory of small, gritty realities. They can kick up a righteous storm, as on the country lick-filled opener "Where the Devil Don't Stay," or the swamp and fuzzy "Lookout Mountain." However, within the latter is a daunting verse: "If I throw myself off Lookout Mountain, No more for my soul to keep, I wonder who will drive my car, I wonder if my Mom will weep." It's clear these guys deliver emotional wallops at every turn. "Carl Perkins' Cadillac" honors the honesty of Sam Phillips, while writhing in the melancholy of changing times and circumstances. --David Greenberger

3 out of 5 stars Good but not classic.......2007-05-18

I know that average reviews are not viewed as all that "helpful", but, like the previous reviewers from Indianapolis and Scotland, I thought I'd offer one anyway.

I went out and bought The Dirty South after I read the rave reviews on Amazon. From most of the reviews here, you would think that the Drive By Truckers rival the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers, and early ZZ Top. According to one reviewer, they are the "saviours of rock." IMO, that's going way too far. The DBT are probably more on par talent-wise with the VRoys (from the late 90s), the Old 97s, and the North Mississippi Allstars - all decent bands, all with a good deal of talent, but ultimately one Duane Allman or Billy Gibbons short (in other words, a long way away) from being the next great Southern rock band.

Still, the Dirty South is a pretty decent album. "Lookout Mountain", "Never Gonna Change" and "Where the Devil Don't Stay" showcase the DBT's driving, dense guitar sound. "The Day John Henry Died" and "Carl Perkins' Cadillac" show that the band can write good music to go along with their strong lyrics if they put their mind to it. And "Danko/Manuel" is a great, slow country song.

For me, the main problem with The Dirty South is when the band uses their music simply as background to their vocals, which is the case on nearly half the songs. Too few hooks or changes in tempo makes for a rather bland and repetitive listening experience after awhile. "Cottonseed" and "Daddy's Cup" are songs that do absolutely nothing for me because of this.

A decent album, yes. A classic? Far from it.

5 out of 5 stars Really dern good.......2006-12-26

A logical progression from Decoration Day to A Blessing and a Curse, the lyrical content is actually stepped up a notch by all three of the fellas on this one. It's hard to point out a lousy song here, and there are a handful that are truly works of art. Patterson- always a favorite, but the Cooley tunes on this disc really knock me out.
If ya love the other 2 I mentioned, you'll love this one too.

5 out of 5 stars DBT at their finest..........2006-12-21

I have a tendency to ramble on, so I'll just do a little breakdown of the album.

1. Where The Devil Don't Stay - 4/5

3. The Day John Henry Died - 4/5
4. Puttin' People On The Moon - 4/5
5. Carl Perkin's Cadillac - 4/5

11. Daddy's Cup - 5/5
12. Never Gonna Change - 5/5

14. Goddamn Lonely Love - 5/5

All in all, this is a great album. The boys from Alabama don't disappoint...

5 out of 5 stars Thank God!.......2006-08-29

And just when I thought rock'n'roll was dead. DBT really are the savers of rock, they're all we've got now, and The Dirty South is simply amazing. Hard, fast, real, and most importantly fun, The Dirty South is an album to just shove in the cd player, and not have a need to skip a track. The perfect highway companion.

5 out of 5 stars top notch.......2006-08-01

the best band you've never heard of...my first taste of DBT - will certainly be going back for seconds, thirds,....

Cape Verde is famous for its Afro-Portuguese-inlfluenced music genres: the haunting guitar-based morna and the percussive Cuba- and Brazil-influenced coladeras. Ever since her "discovery" in 1998, vocalist Cesaria Evora, the so-called "Barefoot Diva," has been her country's greatest musical ambassor. This recording features Evora interpreting old and new Cape Verdean and Brazilian songs. Under the expert leadership of her musical director, pianist Fernado Andrade, Evora's rich contralto is beautifully supported by guitars, the ukelele-like cavaquinho, mandolin, strings, clarinet, and percussion. Like Billie Holiday, Evora can inject a lyric with pathos and passion. That rare gift is heard on the mid-tempo "Isoloada" ("Isolated"), an aching song about a beautiful, imprisoned mulatto girl, written by Evora's poet uncle, B. Leza, and the equally heart-wrenching "Amdjer De Nos Terra" ("Woman of Our Land"), which tells of the suffering of Cape Verdean women. The upbeat tracks include the sax-laced, vocal choired, "Pomba" ("The Dove")and Luis Morais's "Velocidade" ("Velocity"). "Jardim Prometido" ("Promised Garden") is a nice take on the American standard "Greenfields" by another Cape Verdean composer, Teofilo Chantre. The title track features Evora in pan-African fellowship with musicians from Cuba, Brazil, and Madagascar, showing that the music of her homeland has something for everyone. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

2 out of 5 stars International star.......2007-01-09

I have loved a lot of voices from far away Countries for long time:Brazil,Portugal,Senegal;they were stars nationally and internationnally.
Recently I bought Cesaria Evora under the recommendation of a cuban Doctor;I hoped to find some of the rythm I used to swing on in my head.
It did not happen for me!

5 out of 5 stars Cesaria will always be 5 stars!.......2005-07-27

This was the second CD I bought and got a 3rd one within less than a month. I don't believe it is possible to say which is her best disc, or song. The songs bring all of Cape Verde's culture and the mellodies certainly garantee very peacefull and relaxing moments. There's much more to explore and if you ask me I would say, buy all the CD's!

5 out of 5 stars My Goodness Cesaria..........2004-08-06

Oh how I love Cesaria! As always when I visit Barnes & Nobles I go to the International music section. As my eyes scanned the wide selection of world music, Cesaria's face stood out. This woman reminds of Celia Cruz -love her too, may her soul rest in peace -I said to myself and I bet she's a wonderful singer. All I needed to hear was the song "Sodade" and that was it. I fell in love with Cesaria's music. Like Celia Cruz she has the voice that captures your attention and sends chills down your spine - so electrifying it's beautiful! I currently one three of Cesaria's albums - THe Very Best of, Cabo Verde, and Voz D'Amor! THe next albums I want to get are Sao Vincente di Longe and Cesaria!
For the past few months I've been listening to Cesaria's music more than anyone elses! I can relate so much to the lyrics of her music and the style being that I'm from the Caribbean. I feel as if I've also lived the Capeverdian experience! I would like to visit someday! Viva Cesaria a reina da morna!

5 out of 5 stars Voz d'Amor, a deep and hanging album.......2004-01-08

Always equalizes with herself, Cesaria Evora did not lose anything of her voice. This new album proves how much her repertory is single. A team of musicians except par. Lyrics and compositions quite elaborate. The ambassadress of the music of Cape Verde does not have the gift to weary. But well rather to attract more people in search of "ever heard". Of the 14 titles of this disc, one cannot have preference. Let you go and you will not stop listening to the disc. So much it is deep and hanging.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous!.......2003-10-17

I picked this CD up at a local bookstore while actually browsing the classical section. The moment I heard this voice, I was mesmerized! Subtle and passionate, extremely well projected, this voice goes straight to the listener's heart. In classical terms, such a voice can safely be called a contralto, a rare breed, but it's not artificially dark and the singer does not push it at all; she is making the voice gently float and "wrap" the audience.
The program encompasses some Brazilian songs along with many songs from Evora's native Cape Verde. The latter is a lovely fusion of Cuban, African, and Portuguese influences along with something extremely moving and unique that this listener can't quite explain, but one will immediately identify it once familiar with it. The selections nicely move from mournful to joyous, thereby eliminating any "sameness" that's so common with "native music" recordings. They also showcase Evora's marvelous talent to convey a wide range of feelings with a few simple musical gestures. Interestingly, the fact that the recording was made in Paris somehow contributed as well -- the music does carry a vague "chansonette" feel. The supporting musicians are brilliant, they're all literally on the same page with Evora with every expression.
The booklet includes the lyrics and you'll be pleasantly surprised by the poetry. It's all of the highest caliber. B. Leza's wonderful verse has to gain wider exposure.
Do not delay getting this album, for it will bring you over an hour of pure unadulterated musical bliss.

1 out of 5 stars Neither Mexico nor Paraguay are in the Andes.......2007-03-21

The blurb inside starts "The Aztec empire and its many highly developed subject populations ..." However, the Aztecs were in Mexico and northern Central America, and had nothing to do with either the Andes or this CD.

The music (at least the first dozen tracks) is basicly Paraguayan harp music transferred to quena and charrango. Even El Condor Pasa is done in that style. Some of the last 10 tracks I won't make any bets where they came from, altho it's possible some are from Bolivia, particularly eastern Bolivia.

I suspect this CD (no date, no author, no musician, no composer listed) is comprised of two unnamed LPs. However, the entire track list matches 'Los Caballeros / Flute Music Of The Andes' (2006) and also 'Los Craneos, Juan Campolargo Ensemble / Flute Music Of The Andes' (no date) - from Gracenote's database of CD tracklists (formerly cddb). My guess is the latter is more likely where it came from.

(If you add two seconds between each track, it will be "seen" as a different CD by cddb because the total length and length of each track are different.)

However, speaking as someone who has a collection of around 400 Andean CDs (admittedly leaning toward northern Ecuador), I wouldn't really call it Andean music. If you like it, try collecting some Paraguayan harp music.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome Andean Music!.......2007-03-18

Growing up in Chile, the music of the Andes was always in the background. This collection of songs takes me home. You can feel the wind, the chill, hear the birds, imagine the rain in these songs. Fantastic CD. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars ALL YOU WILL EVER NEED ON YOUR JOURNEY.......2006-10-15

Okay, so Inti Illimani and WAyanay and INca SOn and the rest are like REALLY GREAT, but this is all you ever need

In fact, track nine Vasija de barro, is everything you ever want to hear for eternity

And even better if you know the words, and the guitar chords and hook. (pretty much Em, B7, Em, G, B7, Em, until the chorus goes to C, and then the cool guitar hook around the Em scale like HEndrix did)

This album really has just about every Inca song you need, including track nine it has Valicha and El Condor Pasa (yes, Paul Simon stole that one and put real dumb ENglish words to it, but here all three movements are included)

A fairly stripped down group of quena, bass, charango and drums, but that's all you need. All anonymous and the worst liner notes ever (calling it AZTEC music- please this is not MEXICO, dude) and no vocals except a few praises for fat hens and other extemporaneous rare exclamations, but nothing to get in the way. THis has the full spectrum of rhythms beats and traditions of Peru, BOlivia (except Zaya and the real urban stuff that would call for sax or trumpet, etc.) and Ecuador, but once again you have nothing but the accurate titles to go by.

Really, this is the only one you need, and it is cheap for being what this music always was: anonymous!

And the best thing is there are no cheesy Zamphir style remakes of American popular music of the seventies and eighties! NO KANSAS!

It's the entire Inca rainbow on one disc. Get it! be healed!

4 out of 5 stars Andean Flute Variety.......2006-07-09

I expected to get a CD of Andean flute music, which I greatly enjoyed hearing on local radio in South America. And this CD delivered! I don't listen to this CD as often as I expected to, probably owing to that it is a collection of different styles and formats rather than a continuous listening format.

I recommend this CD 4 out of 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2004-01-17

The compositions herein are comparable to Beethoven in terms of their ability to evoke emotion. However, unlike Beethoven, they are simple and sublime and retain a close connection to nature that is characteristic of all Native American music. I especially like track #15 with its grave and intricate beauty. This is now my favorite song.

Like Ireland, Cape Verde is a former island colony which has perennially lost its young people to emigration. And like its Irish counterpart, Verdean music is filled with songs of separation and homesickness. Cesaria Evora, the greatest Verdean singer of her generation, includes several of those songs on Cabo Verde, her sixth album overall but only her second release in the U.S.

With a population descended from former Portuguese colonialists and former African slaves, Cape Verde closely resembles Brazil and has produced a music with similar rippling syncopation and light, sensual vocals, though the Verdean sound is marked by the breezy lilt characteristic of islands. But when Evora sings mournfully of a "Partida" (departure) that will take her love far away, anyone who has ever experienced such a separation will recognize the mix of pain and affection in her voice. That voice is a very special instrument, for it glides gracefully over the supple beat even as it resounds deeply in Evora's lower range and fills up with warm, enveloping resonance. She is backed by a small, all-acoustic Verdean combo led by the ukulele-like, four-string cavaquinho. American jazz great James Carter plays tenor saxophone on "Coragem Irmon," but Evora has no problem matching his thick, buttery tone. --Geoffrey Himes

4 out of 5 stars Uplifting sounds from Cape Verde.......2004-10-29

On this album, Cape Verde's greatest export to the world delivers another exquisite collection of mournful and yearning songs in her moving, bluesy voice. She sings in creolised Portuguese and the style (morna) is a mix of the Portuguese fado and African rhythms. Although Cape Verde lies just off the West African coast, this style has little in common with the mainland sounds from countries like Senegal or Mali. The instrumental mix includes guitars, the special rhythm guitar called cavaquino and even a clarinet to create an engaging polyrhythmic backing for Cesaria's graceful vocal style. Strangely, the sad songs have an uplifting effect on the spirit. Of the slower songs, my favourites are Ess Pais and Zebra, whilst the funkiest uptempo numbers are Quem Bo and Mae Velha. The track Pe Di Boi includes a lovely whistling interlude. The foot tapping dance track Sangue de Beirona is equally inspiring. This is an excellent album by one of the greatest artists in World Music today.

5 out of 5 stars An Afro-Portuguese Sound & A Silk-Smooth Voice........2003-07-05

I was sailing with some friends on an incredible trip to Africa, and we stopped briefly at the small island of Cabo Verde. I had never heard of Cesaria Evora before. I had really never heard much about Cabo Verde before this trip. In a small music/souvenier shop near the port, I heard this CD playing. I was hooked immediately. I bought a CD for myself and several for friends back home, and have never been more delighted with a chance find. My friends are still thanking me.

Cabo Verde was colonized by the Portuguese, and the combination of the African and Portuguese cultures makes for some fabulous music - a little similar to sounds from Brazil. The music on this CD is a combination of the 'fado' from Portugal, mixed with the Brazilian ballad-like 'choro,' and soulful 'forros,' along with Cape Verde's own particular island sound. There is no better way to understand this wonderful, nuanced music than to listen to it. And Ms. Evora, herself, plays her voice and makes a music that is very much her own.

The nostalgic "Partida," "Mar e Morada de Soledad," and "Ess Pais," are sung with a sadness and longing that evoke much emotion. Other cuts, like "Tchintchirote," and "Sangue de Beirona" make me want to just get up and dance to the Oh So Sensual Beat! It is Ms. Evora's soft, silky-smooth, engaging voice that is so special. She is backed by strings - the guitar and an instrument called the 'cavaquinho'- but the rhythms are pure island. A terrific CD! You will enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars What a captivating voice.......2002-06-18

CABO VERDE is a great album for fans of world music. CESARIA EVORA has such a captivating voice, that the listener will be unable to stop listening to it. The songs are beautifully sung, with great melodies that makes this the perfect album to just lie back and listen to. When I listen to it, I feel like I am being trasported to another land. The songs are filled with emotion that the listener will be able to feel. Every song that is on this album is great, I cant find any songs here that I dont like. I first heard of CESARIA EVORA when I purchased CAFE ATLANTICO, which is another album that I highly recommend. I just love her voice and the emotion that pours out of her. This is a great addition to any music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Stories from the sea, stories from Carbo Verde.......2001-08-18

Cesaria Evora is fantastik. She has a beautiful voice and her lyrics are sad but good. This woman is like coffee, you just can't stop drinking, and you just can't stop listing to her. Cesaria Is a truly Diva. ( Cesaria doesn't sounds like Billy Holiday, but more like Tracy Chapman.
