It's finally happened. After years of puzzling popularity by way of derivative rock retreads, Mana has finally made the leap to full-bodied musical force on its first album in four years, Amar Es Combatir. The disc is a thoughtful, tender and often terrific collection of pop wizardry. It's buoyed by solid production work, a cohesive sound and singer Fher Olvera's commanding vocal presence. Mana has always drawn inspiration from the arena-rock vibes of everyone from U2 to Journey, but this time, the group takes those blueprints and creates its own urgent framework. It's a thrilling, insanely catchy collection. Everything on the disc crackles with energy, from winsome opener "Manda Un Senal" to swaggering closing track "Relax." In between, the Mexico-based outfit weaves memorable stories of love that are marked by pulsing percussion, driving guitar riffs and emotive vocals. First-rate stuff from a group who finally--at least to these ears--justifies all the fuss. --Joey Guerra

Album Description

Amar es Combatir, Mana's 9th studio album and first in four years, was produced by Mana with the special collaboration of recording engineer Tom Russo (Audioslave, Macy Gray, Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton). Also includes a duet with JLGuerra.

After a while it all sounds the same.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST Latino Rock Band in the world.......2007-04-04

When it comes to asking people about Pop Latino music; it is almost common that almost everyone you ask will say Mana is among thier favorites. This is probably hard to believe that I have only been a Mana fan or the other word they use for fans like me "Manatico" since 2004. I had a huge interest in the group when I Bought my first album from them called "Unplugged". Thier soothing sounds of a live concern scene had me wanting more. When I bought the next album Cuando Los Angeles Lloran I was hooked. I really enjoy listening to Fher Olvera, the main singer in the group. His musical talents are often compared to the main singer in Sting or Bono from U2. It's really amazing how the group we know as Mana know now almost failed to exist at one point of thier career. I listen to these guys often and recommend anyone to listen to thier music, you don't have to speak Spanish but you can still enjoy the sound of Fher's voice, as well as the drumbeats performed by Sergio Vallin Rodriguez. Here are a couple reviews of thier albums from thier careers (may not have all of them)

Falta Amor 1990- Great first album under the name Mana. for those of you who don't that they used to be called Sombrero Verde and were also part of the movement called "Rock en tu Idioma" This album has more of an Adult Contemporary sound to it, kinda like a Soft Rock en Espanol type sound. My favorite song in this album is "Rayando El Sol" Mana's first big hit.

Donde Jugaran Los Ninos 1992- Another great masterpiece of work, still has the Soft Rock en espanol sound. Great hits include: Oye Mi Amor, Vivir Sin Aire, and Como Diablos, as well as the beginning up beat hit: De Pies a Cabeza. This album you can say put the group on the map on heading to being one of the best Latino rock band in the world

Cuando Los Angeles LLoran 1995- This is when they kinda leave the Soft Rock en espanol sound and head towards the rock en espanol sound. You can tell of the musical differences by listening to thier sound, Selva Negra, as well thier balads. Thier balads aim towards the edge of rock. I don't have a favorite song from this album but I do consider it as one of my favorites.

Suenos Liquidos 1997- En el Muelle de San Blas is another favorite song from Mana.

MTV Unplugged 1999- Another favorite of mine, has the all songs in a concert setting on CD. You can listen to this album while relaxing or if your up and around.

Revolucion de Amor 2002- Includes the hit Mariposa Tracioniera. Love that song!

Amar es Combatir 2006- My favorite song is Labios Compartidos, still love thier music even though they went a little stronger

So catchy and sexy tune.Bendita tu Luz is another apple-pie hit.All in all, I am grateful this contemporary Orpheuses. IMy Spanish fluency increases day by day thanks to the lyrics of their songs.

If Copland's own recordings of his music have the warmth of a soft summer night, those by Leonard Bernstein convey the blazing heat of noon. In his later remakes of several of these scores for Deutsche Grammophon, Bernstein exhibited a tendency toward overly-nuanced readings. But his earlier accounts with the New York Philharmonic, recorded by CBS in the late 1950s and early 1960s, are still incomparable in their vitality and impetus. Bernstein's way with the Western ballets is exuberantly personal and persuasive. He has the ability to move between delicacy and brashness, always getting the gestures right, and he delivers magical characterizations of both scores. The Phiharmonic's playing, while sometimes a bit raw, is confident and rhythmically secure; there is certainly nothing to apologize for here. There is a wonderful sense of immediacy to Bernstein's account of the Appalachian Spring Suite, in which the New Yorkers give a virtuosic account of themselves, playing in a rhythmically incisive fashion that puts Copland's account with the London Symphony in the shadows. The couplings are a mixed bag, however. Bernstein always had the measure of El Salon Mexico, and gives a rousing account of it here. But the so-called Fanfare for the Common Man is lifted from his recording of the Third Symphony; its beginning is not the same as that of the real fanfare. Both recordings have been wonderfully remastered by their original producer, John McClure, and have excellent presence and a palpable sense of atmosphere in the quiet pages. --Ted Libbey

Leonard Bernstein was a friend of Aaron Copland's, and he approaches this music with rare flair and verve--as well as with sympathy and warmth--and, we can assume, with a good idea of the composer's intentions regarding it. This is a classic album, containing several of the works in the essential Copland oeuvre; the sound is not as good as you'll find in a more contemporary recording, but for most listeners the spirit will make up for that. --Sarah Bryan Miller

5 out of 5 stars Universal music.......2006-07-14

This recording, aside of bringing back great memories of a live performance of Mr. Bernstein more than 25 years ago directing Mexico State Philarmonic Orchestra playing Salon Mexico, is of grand quality and Aaron Coplands music selection is escellent as is performed and recorded. My mom (77) and my daughter (8) enjoy it just the same.

5 out of 5 stars Long-Time Favorite.......2005-03-16

When I was in the fifth grade, there was a district-wide competition called music memory, and one of the pieces I had to memorize for the competition was the last movement of Appalachian Spring. And I fell in love with that song. I went and bought the cassette of Appalachian Spring with Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic, and I listened to it almost every night before going to sleep. I even remember that one night I was listening to that final movement through my walkman as I was laying in bed. Evidently, I was humming along without realizing it, and I woke my parents, who slept downstairs and across the house, with my humming. Anyway, that's how good this recording is. And I'm still amazed at what great taste I had at that age. Now, eleven years later, I have upgraded to a CD, but I still listen to Copeland's masterpiece just about as much. I've heard a lot of great music in those intervening years, but I've still never heard anything quite this perfect. I doubt I ever do.

5 out of 5 stars Best Copland Album I've Ever Listened To.......2004-05-15

I love Appalachian Spring Suite! When I went out to buy the music CD, I got This one because of the cool newspaper cover and it turned out to be the best one out there. I've listened to other recordings of Appalachian Spring performed by other orchestras, they just aren't as good. This is the absolute best one. Not only is this one of my favorite classical albums of all time, it's one of my favorite albums period. Every single track on this CD is money.

5 out of 5 stars Test of Time--Passed with honors!.......2003-07-21

I have been a fan of Aaron Copland's from an early age--in fact, so early that I can hardly remember not knowing "Fanfare for the Common Man". As I became older, my appreciation grew and deepened. I still remember my first exposure to the "Gift to Be Simple" section of Appalachian Spring...it was in history class, played as part of a presentation. I can't even remember the subject of the presentation anymore--all I remember is that at that wild, joyous crescendo, I was not in the room. I was somewhere far away, flying. That is the power in a piece like this, and the standard to which I hold any musical recording.

When I began seeking a full version of Appalachian Spring for my own collection, I had the good fortune to get a "recommendation" of sorts for the definitive recording: Richard Wright, keyboardist of Pink Floyd, has more of a Copland influence than you might suspect. When I read his article in Record Collector Magazine, the particular rendition he recommended was this one--the 1962 recording for CBS, of which he seemed to have the original LP. Imagine my surprise and delight to find that it was still in print and easy to find in stores!

"Aaron Copland's an American classical composer," summarizes Mr. Wright, "and [Appalachian Spring] is his most famous work...Like all of my favourite music there's something in his material that touches me; I think it's the chordal progression and the melodic lines just above them that do it for me here - and the fact that it's very peaceful. When I listen to a lot of the stuff that I've played over the years I feel I've been heavily influenced by Copland, albeit subconsciously." (Note to Pink Floyd fans: Comparing the basic approach in "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and Copland's "Quiet City" may prove interesting.)

I am in full agreement here...it is absolutely striking what Copland was capable of creating. In his hands, simple, traditional harmonies were transformed into breathtakingly original works that reflect the best of the American spirit...innovative, beautiful, optimistic, and slightly wild. It never ceases to amaze me how he could weave such a beautiful musical texture with so few notes at times--it is indeed a gift to be simple. But Copland's work is not boring by any means--he also knows the place for grand, sweeping statements and shockingly unique, beautiful chord changes that occur seemingly out of nowhere.

As soon as I heard this disc, in comparison to other recordings I'd sampled, it was immediately obvious why this one survived the test of time, why it was still so vivid in the mind of Richard Wright. Copland and Bernstein seem always to be a good match for each other, but there was something very special going on the night this was recorded. Even if you own other renditions of "Appalachian Spring", even if you are interested in no other composition on this disc, this is an absolute must-have.

As for the other pieces, recorded in the early 60s as well, there's a similar magic--even though the "Fanfare" version is radically different, it's a real ear-opener. The pitch changes are done with a shocking fluidity, but it brings new interest to the piece. It is no replacement for the original; it's probably best to treat it as a different song. "Salon Mexicano" and "Danzón Cubano" are also excellently rendered and timeless.

All in all, this is a fantastic album--a must for any classical collection.

5 out of 5 stars the PERFECT Bernstein recording.......2002-12-16

I have heard A LOT and i mean A LOT of Bernstein recordings...and...as far as post-Beethoven works go...this is it...this may only be comparable to his multiple Beethoven 5th Symphonies...
If you own ANYTHING with Leonard Bernstein's name on it...one should say "Beethoven's Fifth Symphony" on it...and the other should be this disc.

As a follow-up to her 2005 Latin Grammy win, Mexican-American diva Lila Downs has chosen to release a loving tribute to canciones rancheras, the heartfelt ballads ubiquitous in cantinas throughout Mexico. With their merry accordion riffs and perky snare-led rhythms, the tunes can be reminiscent of Cajun music or Colombian cumbias, but even the cheeriest numbers harbor fate-haunted undertones. The singer's darkly sweet, resonant voice interprets each the fifteen tracks to a fare-thee-well. Her fiery South-of-the-border exhibitionism and touches of dry humor are mirrored by assorted comedic whiz-bang sounds that surface amid the mostly acoustic mix. Third generation accordionist Flaco Jimenez, the doyen of Tex-Mex conjunto (a working class style descended from an older but still extant groove known as norteño,) weaves in and out among bass, harps, mariachi-like fiddles and assorted guitars. Peppered with antique-sounding bytes, dramatic spoken poems and even an in-your-face rap (during "Tu Recuerdo Y Yo", track four), the album plays like a slightly surreal movie that is no less affecting for being nearly untranslatable. --Christina Roden

3 out of 5 stars Lila Down's la cantina.......2007-07-03

I love Lila Down, but not being mexican, this is not my type of music. My mexican friends of certain age (not very young) give it 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fabulous.......2007-07-02

I can't recall the reason I originally placed an order for this Lila Downs CD. I had never heard about the artist nor had any knowledge about Mexican language. I presume I read some reviews and just tried it.

But no regrets I can honestly say. At the moment La Cantina is one of my mostly played CDs and it seems I'll never get bored with it - though I still have just a hint what the songs are about. But the FEELINGS are there; sometimes sorrow, sometimes happiness, sometimes something in between.

No use in praising Lila's voice as it has been done in so many reviews before. So I settle to my headline comment: Absolutely fabulous. Now I have already five Lila Downs CDs but I still consider this as the best one. Whatever your taste in music is - this is good.

5 out of 5 stars soulful, beautiful music.......2007-05-22

Love this album. Lila Downs is wonderful - I wish I could own all of her albums but I had to choose just one for now. I chose this one - and I was not disappointed. It is a mix of soulful balads and upbeat even dancable tunes. I especially love "la cumbia de mole" in both spanish and english. I challenge you to listen without singing along and moving. Buy this - you will have no regrets other than that you didn't buy it sooner.

5 out of 5 stars LIla Downs.......2007-05-09

Lila Downs is just amazing on this album, her powerful vocals and energy are just incrediable.

5 out of 5 stars Lila's Best.......2007-04-10

I thoroughly enjoyed Lila Down's new album, Cantina. She is a very original artist, and I highly recommend this album.

I wish she would return to Minnesota and do a concert!

In the past year, MIS received widespread acclaim from Spin, the NY Times, and Urb, as well as radio support from such tastemakers as KCRW (LA), Indie 103 (LA), KEXP (Seattle), and KUT (Austin). The band's music has also been featured in other projects including "Ugly Betty", in Dos Equis' national advertising campaign, on multiple soundtracks, and on the upcoming EA Games release "FIFA 2008".

With 16 million total units in global sales (1999's MTV Unplugged has sold 3 million copies so far), four-time Grammy winners Maná are one of the biggest Latin rock bands around. Revolución de Amor, the four-piece band's first studio album in five years, continues Maná's ongoing dual interest in themes of love and social issues, and the band is masterful at packaging its potent messages in an accessible guitar-based sound. Hailing from Guadalajara, Mexico, Maná create an organic mix of classic rock, modern rock, and traditional Latin music that will appeal to fans of Santana and Rubén Blades (both of whom make guest appearances here). But the band is also able to attract younger audiences thanks to punkier songs such as "Nada Que Perder," which could very easily break through on K-rock radio stations across the U.S. One of Maná's best albums to date, Revolución de Amor is proof positive that Latin rock can be accessible to a broad range of people who don't speak Spanish. --Tad Hendrickson

2 out of 5 stars Más de lo mismo.......2005-10-27

5 out of 5 stars An advance beyond their past.......2005-08-19

I realize that I'm operating at a disadvantage in reviewing this CD. I don't speak Spanish (although I took it in high school and college) and I haven't followed Maná throughout their career. I'm just an late-arriving Americano who appreciates good music whatever its country of origin.

Nevertheless, I was blown away by this CD's sound: its harmony, arrangement, and emotion. In fact, I was blown away enough to order the 3-CD set of their earlier CDs on Warner, based on Amazon reviewers' raves about their earlier work. I can appreciate where those reviewers were coming from, but I still like "Revolucion de Amor" the best.

For my money, the earlier Maná was a worthy band in the Police vein, but a bit minimalist. This CD, where they arguably went corporate (or whatever), fleshes out their potential and really delivers.

Hey, even with English-language bands, I usually place the lyrics in the background and concentrate on the overall sound. On that count, this CD delivers as much as, say, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers or the Sisters of Mercy or Procol Harum or Phil Spector's girl groups. Solid harmonies, good musicianship, great balance.

That may just be succumbing to the allures of pop production, but good pop is all too rare, ironically enough.

I hope that the band is working on another CD, three years on, and look forward to what they come up with.

5 out of 5 stars mariposa traicionera.......2005-08-07

Just want to say that I don't know much Spanish, but I do tune into Spanish radio stations cos' I love the sound. I think it was around 12/03 that I kept hearing Mariposa Traicionera on the radio. The name of the song was not announced or maybe it was but I just missed it. The song had this hold on me and I just had to find out who the singer was. Searched the internet with just the keyword "mariposa" and after much work, I finally discovered this Mana band. Have bought a few of their albums since, and am still going through the letras with my Spanish Dictionary! Other songs of the band I like are for example, Te llore un rio, Oye mi amor, Como te deseo,Te llevare al cielo, Eres mi religion. Well, I could go on and on...

2 out of 5 stars Not up to Snuff.......2007-07-30

I was pretty excited when I saw that GU was coming out with their 32nd release from the DJ series. It looks as if I will be anxiously awaiting the 89th release one day as my appetite for new GU doesn't seem to be waning...unless of course there are too many more like Freland's weak release. Nick Warren never seems to let down, his Paris mix still seeing a fair amount of playtime on my ipod. Danny Howells came out with a pretty good one from Miami, but the Freeland mix is dilute, forgettable, and just seems to meander aimlessly. There is one highlight on disc 2 and that is the Silvrsun Pickups with a track called 'Lazy Eye'. I copied that track to the end of the disc onto itunes just so the $20 I spent to preorder this wasn't a total waste. I definitely wouldnt recommend spending much of your hard-earned money on this mix.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Global Underground Ever.......2007-07-28

I am completely sickened by the junk on these two cd's. I'm a big fan of breaks and this album is the Worst breaks set I've ever heard. Every track is annoying, and nothing fits. Try Adam Freeland's Coastal Breaks or Tectonics which are both phenomenal. Unfortunately Adam is devolving as a dj and that's sad to see. Do Not waste your money when there are soooo many great Breaks compilations.

4 out of 5 stars A welcome change.......2007-07-08

It's very unfortunate, really, that this double mix album is getting some of these nasty one-star reviews. I can guarantee that if this was released on a different label under a different mix series, this would not be received as poorly as it is by some reviewers. The main problem with this is that it was marketed to the wrong audience. As you can gather by reading these one-star reviews, much of the Global Underground fanbase is too high-set on expectations for typical progressive house fare that this label is usually known for. I like Nick Warren and Danny Howells as much as the next guy, but someone should change things up a bit once in a while! Hernan Cattaneo's latest Sequential release, for example, bored me to tears!

Anyways, I'm not even sure how the hell to classify the first CD, as it's an energetic frenzied mix of electro, breaks, acid, and guitars. If you're familiar with Ed Banger's catalogue, then you'll have a good idea of what Adam Freeland's going for, as SebastiAn, Justice, and DJ Mehdi all make appearances here. From the moment the CD starts, the energy hardly lets up and Freeland flies through some absolutely sick cuts. A few tracks and sequences that stand out especially are "F**k," "Floating," and "Signatune" leading up to the devastating "Sharpen the Knives." Definitely not for the faint of heart.

The second CD, although less intense, is much more varied. The first three tracks are hypnotic and fairly subdued before building up to a track by 120 Days, a band whose sound reminds me of Kasabian if they went a more psychedelic route. From there Freeland goes through some techy minimal into a downright weird track by James Holden before getting back to a more conventional rock sound with Silversun Pickups (!), which took me by surprise. Many of these groups/bands would be more familiar to indie rock fans than progressive heads, but that doesn't mean there's a drop in quality here. Freeland continues this sound until the mix comes to a distorted fuzzed-out close.

Clearly the people who went out and bought this before doing any sort of research (are they familiar at all with Freeland's track record??) or sampling have themselves to blame. I suggest that anyone else who is curious about this release would sample some of these tracks before making a decision. It's not the best GU mix by a long shot, but it's way more fresh and exciting than a lot of releases lately.

5 out of 5 stars freeland rules.......2007-07-07

the diversity and open mindedness of this set is mind boggling. so great to see a dj, after so many years of spinning, still having the passion and balls to search out and find whats exciting in music today. if you want the same old same old, 2 minute mixes, tribal/proggy tracks that go nowhere, and sets that are so predictable they sound like the dj went to the john and never came back, then dont buy this. if you like your music fresh, exciting, mind bending, then this is the thing for you.

5 out of 5 stars Thank goodness something new is coming out of GU.......2007-07-04

In short...it's about time GU shook things up a bit. I stopped buying GU albums because I got incredibly bored by their predictable releases...besides Danny Howells. I love how some of the die hard GU fans are falling apart about this release. They sounds like they are getting old when they call it noise. LOL!

5 out of 5 stars great party CD.......2007-07-23

We were going to hire a Mariachi band for our Mexican themed couples wedding shower. The price & space being prohibitive, I ordered this CD. It is so fun. It provided the effect we were looking for, was much cheaper and took up a lot less space than a four-piece band!

4 out of 5 stars Great Mariachi Music.......2007-06-14

I expected a generic, 'B' type CD, but was impressed with the performance!

5 out of 5 stars Great for Your Mexican Theme Party.......2007-01-04

We use this for Mexican Fiesta party music and it helps set the tone for a nice gathering. Nice traditional Mariachi Mexican music.

With magnetic rhythms, cool grooves, and catchy hooks, the Mexican rock band Maná have conquered fans on both sides of the border. From the wickedly cool opener "Hechicera" to the pulsating "Un Lobo por Tu Amor," the tunes are easy to get into, regardless of whether you know Spanish or not. There's plenty of fun, too, on the rollicking "Tu Tienes Lo Que Quiero" and the zany "Clavado en un Bar," which became the tour anthem during the band's 1998 tour. Also bewitching are the romantic "En el Muelle de San Blas" and the achy love ode "Como Dueles en los Labios." The band is also daring, remembering political prisoners around the world on "Me Voy a Convertir en un Ave." --Ramiro Burr

2 out of 5 stars fome.......2006-03-14

5 out of 5 stars This Album Is For Everyone.......2004-09-12

It's been almost seven years since Maná released this album, but I still think it's a great album. This band, in my opinion, has been the most successful Spanish rock band. They have tons of hits and every single one of their albums is a monster album with many hits. Maná also talk about many different kinds of things in their songs.

From this album, we get hits like "Hechicera" and "Clavado En Un Bar", but probably the classic song in this album is "En El Muelle De San Blas", which is a very touching sad song. I honestly cannot say that I have a favorite song from this album because every single song is special in its own way. "Chaman", for example, has a very nice message in the chorus: "jamas dejes de amar...el amor es todo", which means "never stop loving...love is everything." "Como Dueles En Los Labios" is another touching slow song in this album with great lyrics. "Me Voy A Convertir En Un Ave" is a very sad song that talks about a man that is unjustly in jail for a crime that he did not commit. "Un Lobo Por Tu Amor", "Tu Tienes Lo Que Quiero", and "Robame El Alma" have a more uptempo sound.

All in all, this is a great album. Basically all the songs are great. I don't have to say this because there is no bad song from Maná that I know of. Anyway, this album is for everyone. Maná is for everyone. They have songs and messages for everyone. This is totally a band that will remain as a very important one in the history of Spanish rock.

5 out of 5 stars comfy cd.......2004-06-08

This is my rainy day cd that I always play when I'm down, its raining, or I can't figure out what else to listen to. I love all the songs, especially "Muelle de San Blas". That song holds a special sound that has so much feeling. It feels like sweet sorrow, you don't even have to understand Spanish to feel this. It is a great cd with lots of emotional value.

Maná may be at the forefront of the ever-burgeoning Rock en Español movement, but the Mexican band employs a variety of styles to perfect its pleasing pop sound. Nowhere is that more evident than on MTV Unplugged, the quartet's shimmering live collection of some of its biggest hits. Airy balladry, simmering tropical grooves, and '80s-inspired choruses all figure in the mix, making for an effortless and intimate evening of music. The live setting punches up Maná's arrangements on tracks such as "No Ha Parado de Llover," "Ana," and "Vivir Sin Aire." The confident vocal swagger and pleading delivery of lead singer Fher, particularly on "Perdido en un Barco" and "Oye Mi Amor," brings to mind icons such as Sting and U2's Bono. Fher is a rock superstar waiting to be embraced by the world. --Joey Guerra

5 out of 5 stars Great collection of traditional Mariachi music.......2006-07-01

I have this CD as part of a collection of Mariachi music, and I probably like it the best. The music is a selection of traditional Mariachi music and is well performed. It will lift your spirits. What an affordable example of really good Mariachi music. I recommend it to anyone who loves Mexico, and already loves or wants to get to know Mariachi music.

The CD is okay...but its not worth buying there are three much better albums that are worth your hard earned dollars:

Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan / Aniversario 100 / B00000160K
Mariachi Los Camperos / Viva el Mariachi / B00006BXKB
Mariachi Cobre / Mariachi Cobre / B0000018XP

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sound, wonderful traditional classics!.......2002-05-29

There's no Latin music that will ever compare to mariachi music with its blaring brass, violins and guitars. It remains a source of inspiration, a mood changing fundamental. Here, the music is exceptionally well! I enjoy the traditional classics "Guadalajara", "Tu Y Las Nubes", "El Mariachi", "Carabina" "La Verdolaga".

The cultural style of selections delves into a little bit of Mexico all over. For the money, these 16 tracks offered is well worth it, and better yet, the music SOUNDS GOOD! Conductor Lopez Varanga leads the musicians. No matter the different styles of music that I prefer, Mariachi music will always be number one; I will always come back to it! .....MzRizz
