Created as a benefit project for Artists' Project Earth, an organization devoted to protecting the environment, reversing climate change, and tendering disaster relief, this compilation pairs Western pop stars (U2, Sting, Artic Monkeys, et al) and their hits with all-new arrangements performed by members of Cuba's Buena Vista Social Club plus other Havana-based talent. The overall effect is of a well-meaning but not entirely simpatico mutual admiration society. Coldplay's "Clocks" is a good example; the lead vocal is coolly lethargic, engulfing the spiky crags of the rhythm section like syrup on a waffle. But then, most of the singers sound strangely unconnected to the frisky 1-2-3/1-2 of the clavé beat. The contrast between the two groups of players could have been bracing, and to many ears it perhaps will be, but most of the time, they seem to transmitting from parallel universes. Not surprisingly, the best tracks are those in which hometown icons are left to do what they do best. But the late, great Ibrahim Ferrer's marvelous interpretation of "As Time Goes By" (his final recording) and Omara Portuondo's wistful yet powerful cover of "Killing Me Softly" only serve to further showcase what's amiss with the rest of the album. --Christina RodenAmazon.com

Great spin on contemporary tunes Don't buy the itunes version!.......2007-07-29
Buena Vista has done it again. Cold play's and the Jack Johnson tune's are my favorite. The best tracks are the ones where the artist gave the group all the masters separated by tracks allowing these guy to really do their magic. Some songs seem like they just grabed the original version of the song and pasted a Latin rythem on top.

Extremely enjoyable -- as is their companion album, "Jazz Meets Cuba".
Unlikely Crossover of Cuban Beats with Familiar Classics Yields Mostly Zingy Confection.......2005-12-28
The beat-heavy results bear them out, as they developed fresh, energetic and lyrical arrangements of standard works by Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, Chopin, Schubert and others, that still respect the original compositions. The jazzed-up titles aptly (if a bit too preciously) reflect the changes - Mozart's Symphony No. 40 transforms into "Mambozart", Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 becomes "Salsa No. V", and Bizet's Carmen Suite turns into "Carmen Cubana". With titles like those, some of the pieces, perhaps because of their familiarity, come across as a bit too trite, for example, "Afrolise", which sounds bit too cocktail loungey to be too revitalizing a take on Beethoven's "Für Elise", and "Guten Abend", which sounds a bit like a somnambulant Vince Guaraldi take on Brahms's original lullaby.
However, the high points are abundant, starting with the three movements of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 "Pathétique," exciting pieces that feel culturally transformed by the sultry romanticism of the Cuban beats crowned by Tobias Forster's virtuoso playing. Also wonderful are the mournful "Czardas" and the conga-accentuated "Flight of the Bumblebee", both dominated by brother Killian's dexterous bass playing. The three others in the quintet are all equally superb musicians - Tim Hahn, the third Klazz Bother on drums, and Alexis Herrera Estevez (timbales) and Elio Rodriguez (congas), both of Cuba Percussion. The vital mix of sounds in what could have been a hopeless misfire makes for a genuinely exhilarating listening experience.
A unique piece of mixed classic/jazzy/south-american music .......2005-07-28
Interesting, but need to try harder..........2005-03-27

Amazon.com essential recording
Led by bassist and composer Juan Formell, the group Los Van Van--a sort of neo-charanga, the typical violin and flute ensemble--has been perhaps the most influential group in contemporary Cuban popular music for the past 30 years. Some of the group's innovations, especially in the refined updating of traditional rhythms with a pop and rock sensibility, are in evidence in this collection, which features mostly songs recorded in the 1980s and early 1990s. (Don't look for much more information than that in the accompanying booklet.) This is a group that can groove implacably and keep a light, sensual swing. Check out "Por Encima de Nivel," "Sera Que Se Acabo," or "Muevete." This is irresistible dance music--but also worth a close listen. --Fernando GonzalezAlbum Details
For Thirty Years Los Van Van have Been at the Forefront of Cuban Music with their Thrilling Fusion of Traditional Rhythms and Modern Rock. They Called it "Songo" and it Changed the Face of Modern Cuban Music. Today Los Van Van Are a Much Loved Musical Institution and an Integral Part of the Cuban Cultural Landscape. But above all this is Music for Dancing, as Sensuous, Swaying and Exuberant as a Steamy Havana Night ...Customer Reviews:

Despite the U.S. embargo on Cuba--or perhaps because of the forbidden-fruit factor--the music of America's island neighbor is undergoing an upsurge in popularity that rivals the Latin-music heyday of the '50s. For the most part lacking the mainstream music industry's tools--high-tech studios, marketing surveys, pop charts, and ownership by multinational corporations--Cuba has remained free of pressures to bow to the economic bottom line and of the dull homogenization that often results from too much attention paid to profits. In other words, Cuban musicians may be poor but they are free to make music for its own sake. This collection presents a history of Cuban musical creativity from the acoustic country form known as the guajira--represented here by Grupo Raison's authentic-yet-jazz-infused rendering of "Guajira Guantanamera"--through other classic forms that have been diluted over the decades by American handlers--the son, danzon, bolero, mambo, and cha-cha, which was invented by violinist Enrique Jorrin. His "La Enganadora (The Cheat)" was recorded by Orquesta America in 1953, and that track appears here, along with "Cuando Quieras Volver," by the great bandleader Beny More--known as "the barbarian of rhythm" and the real mambo king. As the multinationals continue to pave over a world of idiosyncratic delights with giant theme parks, fast-food chains, and mega-stores, sets like this collection of musical artifacts seem all the more precious.
