Endearing Collection of Montovani Film Music.......2006-09-28
This is a very good collection of Montovani film music. These recording are so soothing and pleasing to the ear. Most impressive are Montovani's versions of YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN and LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE is incredibly beautiful.
Movies and Mantovani Make Magnificent Musical Memories. .......2005-04-18
In this year in which fans celebrate Mantovani's 100th birthday, another excellent British compilation of some of the great maestro's original recordings has been released. The tracks on this CD come predominantly from Mantovani's 1957 bestselling LP, Film Encores, his 1959 Film Encores Volume 2, and his 1967 LP entitled "Mantovani/Hollywood." Up until now, the six tracks from the Hollywood LP have been the most difficult to find on CD in locations other than Japan, and it includes Monty's exciting arrangements of the themes from Zorba the Greek, the Magnficent Seven, Lawrence of Arabia, and You Only Live Twice. While these alone are worth the CD price, the remaining selections comprise the very best of Mantovani's film music library, including Unchained Melody (now better known as the theme from the movie "Ghost"), April Love, the theme from The Apartment, and Charlie Chaplin's Limelight. Attentive Mantovani fans will hear the inclusion of a less heard variation of the "golden hit" Moon River in which the maestro replaced the trumpet solo with the soprano sax in a later recording of this forever popular number. Sooner or later, and we hope sooner, everything recorded by the original orchestra led by the incomparable Mantovani will appear on CD. That is a just and fitting tribute to the most popular light orchestra leader in the 20th Century whose music will live on and will be heard to delight fans all over the world in the 21st.

Customer Reviews:
The barest glimpse of John Williams.......2006-08-15
John Williams is one of the world's best guitarists, but you'd never know it by listening to this album. He basically plucks out the melody. I think I hear more complex playing in the background, but if that's what it is, it's mixed so as to be barely audible. On the other hand, it's very nice background music. I hope brisk sales support Williams' more serious efforts.
Maybe it'll grow on me.......2004-07-28
If I were not a guitarist myself, I would find this collection very very charming. Certainly the selections are beautiful, and Williams is renowned for one of them: Stanley Myers' "Cavatina" from THE DEER HUNTER. It's just that for me this recording does virtually nothing for either the guitar or the lovely pieces selected for this rather peculiar alteration. I'm just not sure that this kind of project, where a virtuoso SOLOIST is brought in to ACCOMPANY an orchestra (Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma have done similar recordings to better effect) is a winner; not even five percent of Williams' prodigious technique is anywhere to be heard and he just sounds so irrelevant. (I'd usually expect to hear this kind of thing from Liona Boyd.) That being acknowledged though, the melodies ARE perfectly lovely and Mr. Williams HAS throughout his great career done many brilliant recordings of dense and difficult music that leave one's mouth agape. I suppose he's earned this little vacation.
Very Good!!!.......2002-09-15
I like this CD very much, I have looked for it for 5 years since I listened its MP3, I got it now, thanks!
disappointing.......2001-04-24
While this album is pleasant enough, it is more orchestra music than classical guitar. John Williams is a great classical guitarist, but the guitar part on this album could have been played by any competent guitarist. If you want nice background music, this album is ok. If you want classical guitar music, look elsewhere.
Williams' Winning Style Captures Film Scores.......2000-08-25
If you like film music, this CD is for you; if you like guitar music, this CD is for you. John Williams brings his guitar virtuosity to bear masterfully on the scores of a number of popular films, which span a period of 60 years.
The use of the guitar gives a different sound to number of the selections, and shows that a good piece of music will shine, no matter what the instrumentation.

Customer Reviews:
Unsung Sondheim.......2007-05-20
What a collection of unsung Sondheim tunes. At times I wondered why these songs had been dropped from shows. Well sung by the various artists.
Valuable only if you don't have any of these songs elsewhere.......2006-10-07
In the early 90's this was a fascinating CD, as it gave listeners a chance to hear many of Sondheim's "lost treasures" which might otherwise be gone forever. (The man does not do "trunk songs" which can be dropped into other shows.) Time, however, has not been kind to this collection. The first four tracks from "Saturday Night" have some bouncy charm (I never realized before how naughty the lyrics for "Love's a Bond" are), but with the glorious complete cast album released a few years ago with David Campbell in the lead, they've now been rendered redundant. (And "In The Movies," though boasting endearing vocals, suffers with all of its context and intercutting songs gone.) "What Can You Lose" can't measure up to Madonna and Mandy Patinkin's sensitive performance on her "I'm Breathless" album (and that would hardly qualify as "unsung"). "That Old Piano Roll" is fun but slight, and "Truly Content" mines the same lyrical phrase over and over till the fun wanes, despite Judy Kaye's winning vocals. "Water Under the Bridge" is one of the weakest songs Sondeheim's probably ever done, and deserves obscurity. Other, better songs here with often exquisite renditions are nonetheless available on other discs, and thus again hardly qualify as "unsung": "I Believe In You," a sweet and lovely song, is on Bernadette Peters' second "Sondheim Etc." CD (though Rebecca Luker's warm, enchanting rendition here is nothing to sneeze at), Mandy Patinkin frantically covered "Multitudes of Amys" on "Experiment," Madeline Kahn and Peters jousted with "There's Always a Woman" on the "Anyone Can Whistle" cast album from the mid-90's (props to Kaye Ballard's biting performance here though), Streisand covered "Goodbye for Now" on "The Movie Album" (and gave it a poignancy and depth it probably doesn't really deserve for such a drab little song). What's left? A cheerful, seemingly menage-a-trois ditty called "The Two of You" (which, bizarrely, was apparently written for "Kukla, Fran and Ollie"). A just plain wonderful "No, Mary Anne," which combines an impassioned performance, hard-bitten realism and sweeping romanticism into something quintessentially Sondheim. (The liner notes indicate that Sondheim expected this to be a parody of a big hit song, "like 'Hello Dolly!'" Those who know anything about Sondheim--and the yawning chasm between his style and Jerry Herman's--may find their heads exploding at that one.) Two endless instrumental pieces from "The Enclave" and "Invitation to a March" (tracks #6 and #12) that are mostly remarkable for how uninteresting they are. The liner notes are outstanding and offer lots of intriguing perspective (listening to "Multitudes of Amys," and you just might wish that "Company" had ended as it was orginally intended to). If you don't have CDs by Peters, Madonna, Streisand, et all, this is a great introduction; otherwise, bump it way down the priority list.

Customer Reviews:
My favorite all time album finally on CD!.......2003-03-03
60 Years Of Music America Hates Best is Spike Jones` masterpiece and a scream! When my dad was stationed in France around 1960 he would go to the base exchange and buy trippy albums like this for us kids. We completely trashed it, of course, but not until it had seen about a million spins. In 1990 I was in hog heaven when I found a SEALED vinyl copy at a used record store. Now it's out on CD and my life is complete. Thank you Taragon Records!
Something a little different from Spike Jones.......2003-01-25
After Spike's original comedy band, the City Slickers, broke up (as happened to all the swing bands of the same vintage), Spike's recordings took a different approach. Here we have in beautiful stereo two projects based on two different themes. "Omnibust" is a parody of television shows of the early 60s, including westerns, kid shows, travelogues, soap operas, sports events, and plenty of "commercials." Note that this is more of a "comedy sketch" than the musical craziness Spike is identified with. The "60 Years..." album is a collection of songs from the 1920s, 30s, 40s, and 50s -- from ragtime to rock n' roll -- with Spike-Jones-type sound effects tossed in. It's not the old City Slicker band, but quite amusing never-the-less. Two nostalgic items with a sense of humor!

"Bateman & Temple...double the listening pleasure".......2001-06-29
Paul Bateman and "The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra" extend their listening pleasure with this latest release ~ "Shakespeare At The Movies"...backed by the world renown "Crouch End Festival Chorus" led by their Choir Master - David Temple. Also appearing...Kenneth Alwyn and Nic Raine to this already "blue-ribbon" 2-CD-Set of the finest music ever to grace the big screen.
Composers who's who is the marquee'...Miklos Rozsa & Sir William Walton from the '40s & '50s...Michael J. Lewis, Nino Rota, Dimitri Shostakovich from the '60s...John Scott from the '70s...Craig Armstrong, Patrick Doyle, Pietro Mascagni & Stephen Warbeck from the '80s, '90s & 2000...each sharing their God-given-talent with the masses, the love of film scoring.
Must mention a highlight in this awesome collection..."ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA" (1972), haunting in content, mixed with heavenly voices and a wonderful flute solo, strings sweeping as a flowing breeze centering around the brass section...over six minute suite in length...composed, arranged and orchestrated by John Scott...conducted by Nic Raine, excels with a love theme pouring generously in each measure, followed by passionate counterpoint, overlayed with a veil of sweet melody.
The entire collection is a film-score-buffs "pot of gold", just waiting at the end of your rainbow...powerful, overwhelming and outstanding performances from all who contributed...James Fitzpatrick (Producer) never fails with each endeavor, Reynold da Silva (executive producer), Paul Bateman, Rickie Clark and Nic Raine (associate producers)...you might try other albums from Silva, all worthy of a good listen ~ "Crimson Pirate:Swashbucklers Of The Silver Screen" (SSD-3009)..."The Mark Of Zorro" (SSD-3010)..."Cinema Century 2000" (STD-5023)..."Alien Invasion:Space & Beyond 2" (SSD-1083)..."Space 3:Beyond The Final Frontier" (SSD-1112)..."Cinema's Classic Romances" (SILKD-6018)..."Bond Back In Action 2" (SSD-1119)
Total Time: Disc One 70:51 on 19 Tracks & Disc Two 70:25 on 17 Tracks ~ Silva Screen SILKD-6024 ~ (2001)

Customer Reviews:
Great compilation.......2002-05-10
I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.
A disappointment.......2001-12-15
There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.
