Customer Reviews:
absolutely great films, but dvd quality lacking.......2007-07-25
If your looking for something you've never seen before this is it........2007-07-24
I'm going to skip for a moment analyzing this film for hidden meanings and let you know what you will see.
Extreme violence, religious references- Christianity, Zen, black magic, disembowelments, torture, genocide, nudity, sadomasochistic behavior, deformed and incestuously mutated cripples, hangings, suicide, a blind gunfighter, a cripple with no legs that piggy backs a cripple with no arms, sex, lesbianism, slavery, lots and lots of bright red blood, landscapes, boilings, rape, and some Russian roulette to name just some of what you will see. All that and this is a Western, although i would say by the way of Space Odyssey 2001.
As i said in the title this is for the open minded who want to see something they've never seen something deep and far out there.
So back to the hidden meanings and interpretations, I had some while watching now I'm not so sure you can get to one by watching this just once. Is this art or is it exploitation? What was this movie trying to say to you? I'd love to hear your thoughts and help analyzing this one. I've also seen The Holy Mountain, again I feel that is another I'd need to see again.
Thanks for reading and appreciate any feedback.
great movies and great bonus.......2007-07-21
True Master work.......2007-07-19
The Holy Mountain or also known as Montana Sacra ( when it first came out in Europe in the early 70's)is in my oppinion still the best one of Jodorowskies movies.
The message is the deepest and it covers and includes an enormous variety of superlatives.Ok,the special effects are -by now- totaly outdated but nevertheless....
This journey comes in 3 parts:
The first part is a visual feast of pure surrealism and symbolysm greatly inspired by Luis Bunuel and it helps to be already aquaintaned with occult knowledge and imagery because there is so much here that can best be appreciated through repeated viewing.
The second part is already leaning towards the comics Jodorowsky was later going to make together with Moebius-Jean Giraud, the french Master Artist that also gave the world the story and character of Lt. Blueberry(check out the pretty good movie that came out not so long ago from director Jan Kounen!).
The final part then is the message in the traditional form of a journey (that ends with meeting yourself, similar to "The circle of Iron"with David Carradine after the script by Bruce Lee).
The final scene on top of the mountain is the essence of everything.
Ok.,this box now -very good in many ways, beautifully restored picture quality, good sound aso.
But for me the highlight is the two soundtracks of The Holy Mountain and El Topo.Ihave always been a great fan of this music. And with guest artists like Don Cherry this is really unique.Great compositions! Thanks for that.
The only criticism I have is they could also have included his two -maybe not so famous- other movies "The Rainbow Thief"with Peter O'Toole,Omar Sharif,Christopher Lee....and "Santa Sangre"with his son(very good version is available through Amazon.uk or at least was not so long ago..-haven't checked lately....with an incredible interview with Jodorowsky of over an Hour in which he speaks about all his movies and his life about Zen and Art.Also includes rare footage of his apprentice time with Marcel Marceau the great pantomime...)
Check out his comics, especially the "Incal" series with Moebius. And he has written a number of books that are Very good too, similarities with Gustav Meyrink come to mind, the great writer from Austria/Prag and one of the Grandmasters of the occult novel.
So that's it.I am sure you will enjoy this box and get while it's still there!
Cheers!
Be prepared.......2007-07-13
If you are truly open minded, this film wont disappoint. My favorite part of the film is when the guy peels the banana and chops it up with a sword. Probably the most comically surreal thing I've ever seen, you have to see it to really understand what im talking about, so buy this movie. Oh, and if you are trying to decide between this and any of his other films, the Holy Mountain is a much more consistent film, and I think it is just plain better.
