Uplifting and exotic. A great compilation with a beat!

5 out of 5 stars fabulous!.......2005-03-10

Standard French Caribbean music, all with a great beat! I play it in my high school French classes that I teach, and the teens love it too!

5 out of 5 stars One of Putumayo's Best.......2004-11-21

An easy-going mix of biguine, merengue-ish extremely enjoyable tunes that get your feet moving. Five of the songs (half the album!) are among my all-time French Caribbean faves, and there are no dogs. You can't help smiling during "Parfum des Isles, a good-natured instrumental. The live Kassav cut, OK but not one of their best, is the only true driving zouk on the cd. The rest are more laid-back, but rhythmically more interesting and appealing, with an almost Brazilian feel. The four of us at work all love this cd, and it has held up well after repeated listenings. We recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars A fine sampler of Franco-Caribbean musical styles.......2004-02-07

A nice, smooth set of modern pop songs drawn from the French-speaking islands of Guadeloupe, Haiti and Martinique, lingering on the more tuneful and diverse end of the Caribbean musical spectrum. For someone like myself, who quickly tired of the manic, monotonous landslide of "soca" and "zouk" records during the 1980s, this disc came as a pleasant surprise. It's very listenable and engaging, a nice selection for someone looking for some accessible, poppish world music.

One of the perfect CDs to play in the background of a party...or when I'm just cleaning the house.

5 out of 5 stars Great rocking music to drive to.......2007-06-08

I love this CD - like a lot of Putumayo recordings, it just makes me feel good when I hear the various sounds and rhythms. I love music from around the world. I have played it many many times when I'm doing errands around town and when I'm on the backroads. Anyone should like it who likes to travel and experience new places, new sounds and diverse flavors of life.

5 out of 5 stars A Fun Exciting Album.......2007-05-20

I alwasy take time to get used to a Putumayo album and this was no exception. I was disappointed at first after the first song but then took to the music. I find Putumayo an exciting musical experience.

3 out of 5 stars A fair CD.......2007-05-19

The first song in this album is marvellous, while others just so so which is really a pity. I decided to buy it when I heard the first song but gave up afterwards.

5 out of 5 stars The Ars subtileor rules........2006-11-21

Even though the title is a slight misnomer as more than half of the tracks are post-ars subtileor, this is an absolutely marvellous CD. Starting with Philipoctus de Caserta (ca.1370) and ending with Antoine Busnoys (d.1492), this CD surveys some of the best polyphonic secular and sacred music of the post-Ars nova Middle Ages.
The pieces are superbly performed by some of the very best early musicians of our day including the Orlando Consort, Ensemble organum and the Hilliard Ensemble. I highly recommend this CD for pleasure or instruction.

Here on Rasin Kreyol (which translates as "Creole Roots"), reigning queen of Haitian song Emeline Michel covers a lot of ground, writing songs that draw upon Haitan compas, twoubadou and rara as well as jazz, rock, pop, bossa nova and samba. Whichever direction the singer goes, her voice is clear and forceful as she dramatically imparts her political lyrics in Haitian Creole and French, offering up messages about AIDS, social justice and peace. She does this skill and class: Michel repeats the line "Tell me, where is peace?" to chilling effect on "Mon Rêve," where she's joined by background singers, flute and voodoo hand drums. At the other end of the spectrum, "Ban'm La Jwa" is uplifting with its driving calypso-jazz grooves. While the singer has released a handful of albums as imports over a 15-year career, Rasin Kreyol, her Times Square records debut, is a standout that should help U.S. audiences catch up with the French speaking world that already adores her. -- Tad Hendrickson

timely arrival; great music that's hard to find on stores- i'm totally satisfied!

5 out of 5 stars Un régal!.......2005-04-18

4 out of 5 stars Old/New.......2004-11-18

Background orchestration supports and doesn't overwhelm the vocals, which range from modern pop to old-style Haitian.
It's this blend of old and new which gives Emeline Michel an unexpectedly contemporary style - hard to pin down to a single trend, yet compelling.

5 out of 5 stars Rasin Kreyol "se bongay" - is the real McCoy!.......2004-10-06

Once again, Emeline Michel delivers the best of haitian music. She is a formidable performer. Her voice is captivating and her lyrics are poignant.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Gipsy Kings, typical Gipsy kings.......2001-08-04

I find that this album is like ALL the Gipsy Kings albums; very the same material over and over. All Rumbas; over and over. I dont think they reflect true flamenco at all; as they play the same music over and over; do not do soleares; sevillanas etc; if you are a fan of modern jazzy flamenco then you will most likely like this; if you are more of the Carlos Montoya type, forget it and save your money for more authentic music...

5 out of 5 stars Compas.......2001-06-17

Compas is another excellent Album from the famous Gipsy Kings. It is a little different from the other albums but don't get me wrong, it is still a very good one. It must be their most inventive album ever and their most atmospheral one. Standout tracks are: Ami Wa Wa (Solar Por Ti), La Fiesta Comenza, Canto A Brazil, Mi Nino and the beautiful Di Me. The instumental tracks are all brilliant. This album is very recommended, for every one.

5 out of 5 stars Takes you to Spain without the airfare!.......1999-11-17

I am a diehard GK fan! I fell in love with them after hearing "Bamboleo". I think they are a fantastic group to introduce the world to Latin music. After hearing just one song, you will fall in love with the ancient gypsy and arabic sounds that are blended with classic instruments. The big plus is the voice of Nick Reyes who is sometimes hard and unstoppable, making you feel the pain of loss or the smooth sensuous voice that makes you feel the passion of love. Their music reflects the landscape of Spain and its history. I visited Spain in February and heard their music many times on the radio. When I want to remember my great time in Spain, I listen to the Gypsy Kings.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money unless you're a diehard fan.......1999-10-24

I'm mystified by Amazon's decision to list this as one of the group's Essential Recordings. It's definitely the weakest of the bunch, although a couple of the songs are OK. If you want the flamenco rhythms the Gipsy Kings are known for, I prefer Love and Liberte, but any of the other albums are better than this one. If you want unplugged sound, try Allegria; if you want the middle eastern-Moorish musical influence, Mosaique is far superior.

5 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful.......1999-05-24

Yes, this album is simply wonderful, though it won't tell you much at first audition (except of course, for Solo Por Ti and Mira La Itana Mora). Now that I have it, I really feel ready to live. Technically, it's perfect, as Gipsy Kings songs always are. Absolutely superb music, once again! Interesting thing about Gipsy Kings - you can't tell why you like it, since your heart is the one in charge.

4 out of 5 stars Good flamenco roots in rock n' roll form.......2002-03-21

Great flamenco-based guitar work and some very catchy songwriting make for an excellent album that is far better than most anything being produced in the english-speaking music world at this time. There are two secret songs hidden past the last track on this album that are puro flamenco, para el aficionado del flamenco mas autentico. An enjoyable album that holds up well over multiple listens and does not grow stale at all.

5 out of 5 stars Infusion of Fresh and New Flamenco Fusion.......2000-08-10

This latest CD by Los Martires Del Compas serves up emotions that are at the same time raw (vocals by Chico Ocana), bittersweet (guitars by Julio Revilla and Manuel Soto), and with salty longing (bass by Jesus Diaz Benjumea) all in a flamenco-tinged stew. The first song "Tu Hielo" ("Icy"), evokes an Andalusian sunset whose rays illuminate Moorish memories......[Sigh].
