After hearing "Yo Puedo Hacer", I opted to try Montaner's SUMA album. The whole album is just simply amazing - Montaner has a wonderful voice, and it resonates with passion in every song. I especially liked "Verte Dormida"

Richard Montaner has a beautiful voice which he demonstrates well in the selections on this CD. All in all it is quite enjoyable if you're into Latin Romantic songs. If you are a Ricardo fan, you will like this CD. My only gripe is the cost -- its a bit pricey for a rather brief album.

MARC BLACK & THE FUNKY SEX GODS

Donning African robes, striped psychedelic shirts and sun glasses, here come The Funky Sex Gods. Their sound features Marc Black's guitar and voice. In the words of Relix reviewer, Phil Demetrion, "From the 70's down to the present day, Marc Black's chant-based songs and improvisational rave-ups have kept dancing souls movin' and groovin'. One might say that his live gigs presaged today's 'jam band' scene."

The bottom of the band is represented with the sly thumpings of Michael Esposito, one of the founding members of The Blues Magoos, on bass and bicycle tire. Meanwhile, time is stretched and smacked relentlessly by the fearless science friction attitude of Eric Parker from Bob Weir's Kingfish, and the Stevie Winwood, and Joe Cocker Bands.

On a given evening, the Sex Gods will recline into some laid-way-back funk, rage at the worldwide corporate playpen, slip into something more comfortable for a slithery seduction, before smacking everyone with an ecstatic dancethon.

Black is also a hipster storyteller, with tales that can be as mundane as the band setting up to play or as exotic as Jehovah asking an angel for a private dance only to find out she needs her personal accompanist, Beelzebub.

But this band isn't really about the individuals who appear. It's how they love to disappear. The way the machine fits together. The way the cloud settles over the players and the audience…and you almost always can spot some lightning.

Album Description

This CD is a recording of eleven of the acoustic, but groove oriented songs of Marc Black, one of the premier singer/songwriters from the Woodstock, New York area. The recording is dedicated to a small roadhouse with a big heart, the White Water Depot. This was home to the Marc Black Band.."The floor would rumble in your bar of dreams...hippies dance to the shaman's scream." Many of the songs on the CD are meant to honor people and events from Marc's life...his favorite groupies (they never sang no songs, but they taught the band to play), his son's bar mitzvah (this path of love stretches five thousand years to you), his nephew's wedding (we are born in a world worn, yet so full of dreams) and Billy Twigg, the man who owned the White Water Depot and who was later shot by a drug dealer in Texas. "I never had an angel, but if I did, it could have been you Billy Twigg."

The collection was produced by Warren Bernhardt, music director for Steely Dan.

If you enjoy imaginative approaches to song making, this is a must-add CD for your collection. I've always admired the strength of Marc Black's songwriting and marveled at the live performances by his bands. From the '70s right down to the present day, Marc's chant-based songs & improvisational rave-ups have kept dancing souls movin' and groovin'. One might well say that his live gigs presaged today's "jam band" scene.

This new album showcases Marc's ballad side, as well as da funky stuff. Longtime collaborator Warren Bernhardt's production and keyboard contributions are nothing less than stellar. "Karen and Betsy" is a warm tribute to all the hippie chicks who ever spun and twirled in front of their favorite band. Other stand-out moments include the heartfelt "Wedding Song," the atmospheric "Sailor Song" and the wry social commentary contained in "Man Man."

I never take this baby out of the disc player!

Genuine jewel of Argentine folk music.......2004-10-06

Suma Paz reaches a magnificent moment of intimacy and lyrism by interpreting what should be considered the true Argentine Folk music, with no influences from the Altiplano or Litoral Music (not entirely of exclusive Argentinian tradition).
As a rare gem, her soft voice is delightfully accompanied by a truly "guitarra criolla" in the manner of Atahualpa Yupanqui.

Give Argentine music a try.......2003-10-01

First of all, the publisher's review has been mistranstlated, referring to Suma Paz as Extreme Peace, and worst of all, a man. The sweet Suma Paz is an odd-60-year-old lady who doesn't have a magnificent voice but has been thoroughly deep into Argentine folk music. Her only influence is the unparalleled Atahualpa Yupanqui, an old aquaintance of hers. She masters the acoustic guitar and is never accompanied by anyone but herself, thus making each of her soulful renditions unique. At first, her art may not impress, but listening closely one can tell -in the absolute silence of true attention- her interpretations are great. Suma Paz is a hard worker and her brooding delivery of lyrics make her one of the first and most serious Argentine performers of native music.

Album Description

It's not about learning the music. It's about finding yourself in the music. Finding a resonance where your voice and the voices of those around you speak in their natural harmony.

This is the approach we've taken in the creation of this music. The players were coached in feelings. Words. Dreams.

The themes were stated simply, as you'd express a topic for conversation. Or a meal to be shared and enjoyed.

The sessions took place in landfills, studios out in the country, studios in California, studios in New York City and garages in the suburbs. The musicians would stand in a circle under the sun, in the corners of rooms or in separate rooms connected only by sound. The situations were all chosen to help the music surprise us. And it did.

The genre spectrum on this disc is rather wide, but to us it feels like one road trip over time and space. We hope you enjoy the journey as much as we did.
