Colombian singer-songwriter Juanes's second solo album is many things: poetic, lyrical, heartfelt, and intelligent. Ordinary, however, would not be among the list of adjectives. The humble title, Un Dia Normal, is more a description of the album's overall themes. It's a slicker and catchier collection than Juanes's politically minded 2000 album Fijate Bien, which earned seven Latin Grammy nominations and tons of critical attention. Un Dia Normal finds the former member of rock outfit Ekhymosis contemplating an array of inner emotions--primarily life, love, and loss--all anchored by Gustavo Santaolalla's tight, precise production work. "La Unica" is a sweet and tuneful love letter, while "Mala Gente" finds Juanes damning a cruel lover to hell--literally. "A Dios le Pido" is an intoxicating swirl of cumbia, reggae, and folk rhythms, but it's the bittersweet duet "Fotografia" that truly soars. Juanes's unassuming vocal style is the perfect complement to Canadian songbird Nelly Furtado's lilting soprano, creating a shining moment among an already impressive collection of gems. --Joey Guerra

5 out of 5 stars Love him :-().......2006-01-14

I've loved Juanes since about 2001 when I saw him on the Latin Grammy's. I love Latin music and he's amazing (and hot too). His voice is great and the music is terrific. Sure, I don't necessarily know what he's singing about, but it sounds romantic and beautiful. My favourite song is A Dios Le Pido. It's great. I've got a couple of his cds, but this is the best of his. For all Latin lovers, go get this.

5 out of 5 stars Juggernaut.......2005-12-19

Juanes' chameleon like sophomore album is a lively, youthful, highly emotional, musical spree driven by masterful guitar and his evocative, soothing yet distinctly rock voice. It's one of the few albums of any musical artist I own that I can listen to straight through.

He has a slew of mellow latino pop ballads on here, immensely listenable and fresh, "Es Por Ti", "Una Dia Normal", "Dia Lejano". Perfect songs for unwinding or a leisurely drive somewhere.

Then you have his experimental batch, "La Unica" (dark until it changes halfway like a break of hopeful light through the clouds), "La Paga" (a cheeky slightly reggae-ish chant), "Luna" (bouncy and fun), "La Historia de Juan" (more on this later). Driving latin rock (and dance!) songs come in the shape of "La Noche" which sounds just like you'd imagine it to (although it should have an exclamation point at the end of the title), "Desde Que Despierto" a pop-rock song which is upbeat and happy.

The best songs on the album, or my favorites at least, are "Fotografia" a superb romantic pop duet with Nelly Furtado. It's just wonderful and slaps a smile on your face. Then you have his two anthems: "Mala Gente" a mischevious, rollicking, intense rocker regarding the fate of someone on their way to Hell. The second anthem, and what I think is one of Juanes' best songs, "A Dios Le Pido" a latin rocker which is intense, introspective, and a petition to God to listen to the plight of mankind and the singer's own heart. It starts with an explosion of drums and electric guitar and descends into a throbbing beat and Juanes' evocative almost chantlike belting. It's the musical equivalent to caffeine and deeply profound.

Although Spanish is incredibly musical language without translation, with translation you'll find Juanes writes remarkably poetic lyrics. Additionally, his messages are highly socially conscious. As an artist he uses his position to make a difference in the world and this is apparent in most of his songs. He speaks against violence and injustice. The throbbing driving ballad "La Historia De Juan" (another favorite of mine) is literally the story of a young man from the streets who is forgotten, but could have offered the world so much. Not only is it heartbreaking, but the rhythm and style of the song is peculiar and experimental. This is what makes Juanes one of the great musicians working today, he writes about things we don't often think about and uses an intense and immense world of musical styles as his tools, but always leaving his brand on it. His creativity, verstility -- and pathos -- set him apart.

The glue that sealed the disparate parts of 1997's Polydistortion is considerably less binding on Gus Gus's second album. This Is Normal comes on like a mix tape of dreamy digitalia, deceptively flip Europop, and jazzy house tracks. Iceland's favorite nine-member arts collective is no doubt digging the confusion. Of the album's 11 tracks, 8 are commandeered by Daniel Agust's wondrous voice, which is boyishly strident and ethereal by turns. On "Ladyshave," the Kula Shaker-esque single, he enacts a seduction scene, enticing a lover (himself?) into the shower, only to lose his identity in the process. The succinct vocals of "Bambi" carefully twin the song's chamber-pop reserve, creating an impression of sublime ardency in the process. In comparison, the three cuts sung by Hafdis Huld are less immersing, but the trip-hop soundscapes of "Teenage Sensation" and "Blue Mug" provide a lush framework for her elegant phrasings. For the band's more dance-oriented fan base, "Very Important People" has the sheen of a sun-splashed Funky Green Dogs track. The album's inevitable remixes should kick its remarkable, if somewhat buried, grooves to the fore. Gus Gus is a complex, contradictory project. At its best, This Is Normal gives a glimpse of the blue flame locked inside its glossy northern soul. --Steve Lafreniere

5 out of 5 stars This Is Normal (1999).......2006-02-26

Moving from the American scene to the 'British' scene in 1997, I was stunned by the differences in music as I crossed the shores. I had been out of England for years and years, and upon my return I had to play catch up with the British music culture, and fast. I had a history of The Kinks to catch up on past ''Lola'' and ''Low Budget''. 10CC waited in the wings beyond ''I'm Not In Love''. And on the horizon were Massive Attack, and Supergrass.

And Gus Gus are from Iceland. I'm just stating that so you don't think I'm thinking they're from the UK. But this is where I heard them, and I'm not sure I would've heard them hanging out on the East Coast of America. Maybe if I frequented more clubs I might've, but somehow being able to see them on MTV Europe, in the comfort of my own home, says the likelihood would not have been great of a Stateside viewing.

And it was one viewing of Gus Gus's ''Starlovers'' that got me to say, ''Who is this????'' The immediate thing that made this song stand out to me was Daniel Agust's voice. It was beautiful. A truly truly great singer. That was the first thing that stood out to me. And then the song's groove and melody stood out next. I had to hear more of this thing called Gus Gus, and I was glad I did. ''This Is Normal'' is an album worth purchasing. One thing urging you to do this is the promise that Daniel Agust's voice is worth it. Ethereal, melodic, soothing are a few words that can describe it.

And then I heard ''Snoozer''. Which slowly turned into my favourite song from this album.

I really can't say enough about this album. It thoroughly convinced me that the European/British scene was headed somewhere entirely different than the American scene, particularly in regards to Iceland! But it was an immense culture shock hearing bands such as Massive Attack, Supergrass, Gus Gus, Roni Size and Daft Punk in constant play on UK shores, where I knew living in America I would have to seriously go underground to hear some of it. Or be a fan of Soul Coughing and hunting down where they got it from. Which I am.

There are a few reasons to buy this album. The most important is of course the songs themselves, the greatness of ''Ladyshave'', ''Teenage Sensation'', ''Snoozer'' and the irresistible ''Starlovers''. Another reason is to hear the voice of Daniel Agust. I think I'd buy an album of him singing a Chinese menu (wait, Anthony Kiedis already does this doesn't he?) And a final reason is to own an album by Gus Gus just to say you have an album by Gus Gus. You'll look ''cool'', trust me.

4 out of 5 stars This Is Good.......2004-02-23

One of the most interesting bands of late nineties` electronica, Gus Gus are also one of the most underappreciated. That`s unfortunate, since "This Is Normal", their sophomore album, stands out as a terrific piece of pop, house, techno, trip-hop, jazz, ambient, electro and club music.

It`s a diverse and gripping effort, presenting intriguing and complex soundscapes that quickly become addictive. The band has both male and female voices, which are used to great effect and contrast well with the moody, icy and cold atmosphere of the record. The lyrics are ambiguous, making an interesting combination with the feel of strangeness and weirdness that most of the songs evoke.

As one can guess by the excellent cover, "This Is Normal" is a futuristic, lush, experimental and seductive album, containing great moments like the offbeat electropop in "Starlovers", the subtle soundscapes in "Blue Mug", the delicate and smooth melodies in "Bambi" or the dark and claustrophobic ambiance in "Snoozer".

This is a consistent, well-crafted and innovative release, way better than its disappointing and more commercial follow-up "Attention". It`s also a proof than there`s more to find in Iceland than the overrated Bjork and Sigur Ros.
Highly Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A bit better than Normal.......2002-05-17

This is a great CD with some upbeat pop tracks (Ladyshave, Starlovers), tripy stuff (Teenage Sensation), sort of funk (Blue Mug, Love vs Hate) and two very beautiful songs, Bambi and Dominique. Bambi has echoes of Morcheeba's "Rome Wasn't Built In A Day" but this is a more subtle song. This CD will never go down as one of the great albums of all time but it is a little piece of buried treasure worth unearthing.

3 out of 5 stars Difficult second album test passed.......2002-01-20

Normal for Gus Gus is very weird for us. But that only helps the music. From songs like 'Ladyshave' you can hear the group have lost none of their touch since their last album, 'Polydistortion'.

A much more complex album in comparison to the often barren soundscape of 'Polydistortion', this album however does lack some consistency when you compare it to its predecessor. Nonetheless, a good follow up.

3 out of 5 stars What is the capitol of Iceland, Alex?.......2001-11-15

I only know of two bands from Iceland. The other one is
Sigur Ros. I can't say how I like them compared to Gus Gus,
as I've been avoiding them, even though I keep hearing how
great they are.
Then I remembered Gus Gus, and how this cd was virtually a
permanent part of my car for the better part of a month.
Parking brake off, no cars coming, Gus Gus playing, now we can go.
The quality of This Is Normal could inspire me to buy an album
with an alienfetusangel on the cover. That's the highest praise I can give.

This album is superb. For me, it ties Big Loada for Squarepusher's best album, both of which are on my "top ten of all time".

4 out of 5 stars This one really grew on me.......2006-07-10

I used to have a tendancy to give great albums 5 stars. But a 5 star album has to be mind mending. This is a great album. I used to try to look for something specific when listening to this, but this is NOT a regular drum and bass album. If you're like me and expected to hear the kind of music you hear on Squarepusher's remixes, you will not find it here. This is a lot deeper. It's not just bob your head or dance music. It's a complete experience. Squarepusher shows some amazing production techniques especially with the drum samples. His atmospheric work on each track is very good too. If you really want to hear this album for what it is, you have to hear the whole thing at least a few times. Just the 30 second samples won't do it. I am looking forward to hearing more from Squarepusher, for sure.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2006-05-14

what more can I say? Minus the last track, this is pure, untamed, genius! Check YouTube to see Tom pitch bend E8Boogie while making puky faces in his studio. Amusing. not amazing

5 out of 5 stars one of his best.......2006-05-08

if you dig electronica with some jazzy elements sprinkled on top, this is the album for you. squarepusher never releases a bad album, and this is one of my favorites by him. highly reccommended for anybody who has any appreciation for either electronica or jazz. very well-crafted without any filler or bad tracks. bursting with original ideas.

3 out of 5 stars YES.......2006-03-06

Another superb release by Tom,I think this release is ok it's no Go Plastic or Big Loada but I still like most of all Jenkinson's work so far. If you like decent music pick this up.

5 out of 5 stars malkmus vs. gibbard.......2007-04-15

heh i appreciated the "re arrange" review. did you take philosophy 101 just to come up with that??? but seriously that review was helpful. it seems that built to spill being comparable (if that's even a word you get the picture) to the likes of quitessential pavement and the over rated death cab for cutie (come on aside from transatlanticism their work is just lacking something maybe substance maybe it's straight edge minus the ideological value like a right angle *i believe ian mackaye would agree) critics of build to spill like albums more leaning towards death cab (ala 'perfect from now on'). well this album leans more towards pavement and camper van beethoven (take the skinheads bowling nuff said). plausibly in relation to this people don't appreciate this album for all it's worth. well, those people can drop dead and go to hell (if hell and hell will decide...) this album is worth it for joyride alone. i will admit, some of the songs kind of drag on; nonetheless, life just is a joyride drink a lot of beer and climb inside lay your foot down on the gas leave it there until you crash

3 out of 5 stars Work in Progress.......2006-03-31

This CD covers the period before BtS' 'There's Nothing Wrong With Love', one of the best indie-albums of the nineties. Here are two earlier versions of 'Car' and 'Some', songs that are better on the later album, but still worth it.
The level of the album is not that high compared to the albums that would follow, but it has it moments, mostly in the brilliant Doug-and-a-Guitar songs 'Girl' and 'Joyride', certain BtS classics/

3 out of 5 stars For completists.......2004-04-29

This is OK. It has some good stuff, some interesting stuff, and stuff that should have been left on the cutting room floor. I'd say only BTS die-hards should buy it. It's not bad, but it's not top-quality.

3 out of 5 stars there is the hungry owl.......2004-01-29

Essentially this album is messy. Quite messy. Now, it's not an oblong box that yells at you for not exercising enough, because that's not messy. It is instead more like a bunch of eraser & pencil shavings thrown on a pile of loose-leaf shredded paper. Owning is worth it solely for the reason of having it. If you like Built to Spill then you can find something in this album that will have similar worth to the rest of the stuff you like. Then, of course, if you are a flimsy character with little respect for the world and its creations, get you to hell. But, in the album there is little album to listen to, which should be expected being an outtake-box, for example some songs just seem to exist for a reason, not a good reason, but just a reason. The reason similar to why the word 'characteristics' is spelt with 3C 1H 2A 2R 2T 1E 2I & 2S, you see we could probably spell this word differently, maybe with better style or efficiency, but we have not and probably will not. This is just the way the language happened to work. And this album has a lot of letters in it that maybe should have been exchanged for better letters, but at least we can see the development of the current spelling.
So if you like the spelling of the word 'characteristics' or at least appreciate some of the combinations of the letters in the word, then you can probably find something in this album you enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Some Good Stuff.......2002-12-18

I like this album very much. I do think it is weaker than other albums, but I have a sentimental attachment to the song "joyride." Still, despite being less coherent than the other albums, this is still a great album in comparison to a lot of other music. If it comes down to this and something else, get this.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Quite Like It Then, And Nothing Like It Now............2006-03-18

I remember when I heard it for the 1st time on college radio in 1978...It blew me away....It sounded so fresh and different. Unlike anything I had ever heard before. And almost 30 yrs. later It would still stand out,and be relevent if it was released today..That says alot. Theres not many songs I could say that about....A true groundbreaking masterpiece...Its a shame that there are only 2 songs by the Normal (aka D.M.) There probably could have been alot more.....AHH What A Great Era In Music. I miss it!!!

3 out of 5 stars Repitive, but okay........2004-08-13

I liked the music, but like the title says, it was repetitive. First of all the songs were very short (3:23 and 2:52 respectively). If you listened to the samples you pretty much already listened to all the music you're going to hear on this CD. The first song only has one part to it and the second song has three parts - the part you hear in the sample, a part consisting of the beat in the sample and the sound of someone flipping through TV channels and the outro which consisted of 2 notes and static.

I liked the little music that was on this, but I thought I would get two full songs. Just be cautioned that there isn't alot to this release.

5 out of 5 stars This is not enough !!!!!!!!.......2001-12-30

The fact that they never recorded anything else has been bothering me since i first bought this 45 when it came out. I heard it once on k-roq, when to Zed records in Long Beach and bought it. I was AMAZED to see it on cd. Theres only one other band i can think of that should have recorded more and thats Spitting Teeth.

5 out of 5 stars Splendidly Morbid.......2000-08-07

Well, for a while I thought my family were the only weirdos who had ever heard this piece. Very original. I grew up with it as my older brother used to listen to bands such as this and Throbbing Grissle, Dali's Car, The Residents, and many more. I can imagine Tim Burton listening to this kind of stuff. At any rate a top notch piece of music for any gothic/electronic/weird fan.

5 out of 5 stars Let's make love before we die ..........2000-07-17

This song was of course made famous by Grace Jones in her 1980 version on the album of the same name. I like hers, but I love this even more. Similar to the more melodic side of Suicide, especially songs like Ghost Rider, Keep Your Dreams, Cheree and I Remember. I would say this orginal version is more eerie and hypnotic than Grace Jone's fuller, but still ominous, rendition. A brilliant classic of synthesizer rock, with intelligent, poetic lyrics.

3 out of 5 stars Too Skimpy.......2007-08-07

One reviewer asserts that this covers only his best with Asylum Records. In fact, in terms of charted hit singles [he had exactly two] this covers just 50%. Thankfully, Werewolves Of London is here, his 1978 # 21 Billboard Hot 100 which, featuring Mick Fleetwood on drums and John McVie on guitar, was produced by Jackson Browne. So too is the flipside, the wonderfully quirky Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner.

But where is A Certain Girl which, with Jackson Browne providing background vocals, reached # 57 Hot 100 in 1980, and its B-side, Empty-Handed Heart? I realize this 1986 compilation probably repeated an earlier vinyl LP, but could they have not added "bonus" tracks as so many others have done? The liner notes are virtually non-existant as well, offering one page listing the musicians involved with each track.

It might have been interesting for buyers to know that Warren had had a charted hit way back in 1966 as one half of the duet known as Lyme And Cybelle. Paired with Tule Livingston, their Follow Me made it to # 65 Hot 100 for White Whale b/w Like The Seasons. Or that he had once worked as the keyboardist/bandleader for The Everly Brothers just before their celebrated breakup. Or that he was the composer of the Linda Rondstadt 1978 hit Poor, Poor Pitiful Me. Or that he also recorded in 1990 as part of The Hindu Love Gods along with three members of R.E.M.

Just one more in a long list of early CDs that have become obsolete by today's standards. Either retire it or expand it.

3 out of 5 stars Doubtful selections.......2007-02-09

There are two one-disk collections of Zevon available on Amazon. I agree with Tim Brough below that if you get only one, you should go with 'Genius'. It has some excellent tracks - 'Carmelita', 'Reconsider Me', and 'Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead' - that were inexplicably left off of this set. The songs that you lose by picking up 'Genius' instead are mostly forgettable, although I wish 'Genius' had included 'Mohammed`s Radio' from AQNL, and both disks sadly excluded 'Transverse City', the terrific title track of an album that bombed commercially.

5 out of 5 stars Solid, One-Disc Compilation.......2003-11-09

Zevon is a great ballad artist, and it is very sad to hear that he died so early. This CD gave me my first taste of Zevon and I won't forget it.

A great disc overall...I like "Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner"

3 out of 5 stars Skip This for "Genius".......2003-09-12

Warren Zevon is a lost American Treasure. Like John Prine and maybe Randy Newman, he understood that songs could also stand as separate literary structures. But since "Genius" contains his post Elektra/Asylum output and the uncensored version of "Lawyers Guns and Money" (the you-know-what does not hit the fan on "AQNL"), "Genius" is the better buy. Of course, if you're feeling adventurous and have a few extra bucks, you should spring for "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead."

"Genius" does trade off "AQNL's" "Ain't That Pretty at All" and the title track to the brilliant "The Envoy." Maybe someday that album and the live "Stand In The Fire" will make it to CD....

5 out of 5 stars Warren Zevon - A Unique Songwriter.......2002-09-28

Even though "The Best Of Warren Zevon" only covers the years he was on Asylum records, it is still worth getting. Among the quirky characters and twisted love songs, Warren Zevon wrote "The Envoy" in 1982. Its lyrics are eerily prophetic and just as relevant, if not more so, to the state of the world today. "Nuclear arms in the Middle East. Israel's attacking the Iraquis. The Syrians are mad at the Labanese, and Baghdad does whatever she please. Looks like another threat to world peace, for the envoy." The fact that the album "The Envoy" is out of print makes this Zevon collection indispensable. The version of "Lawyers, Guns And Money" included in this compilation is the single, edited version. That makes the song highly collectible, since it's the only edited version available on CD. "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" is sadly ironic, as Warren Zevon is fast approaching the big sleep. I hope this CD helps people to remember him for much more than "Werewolves Of London."

Townes recorded at the Jester Lounge, Houston, in 1966--this is the place were Townes started singing, joking,to an audience-the recording, considering the date is excellent--tunes include covers, talking blues, and some early Townes songs. If you love Townes as so many do,you need this,it is a part of Texas music history, and it gets no more better than that. Support this release--who knows what else is out there?

4 out of 5 stars A Steinberg classic.......2007-06-03

I had this years ago on vinyl and was very pleased to find it available on CD. This was one of the bestselleing Comedy albums of its time and for the most part it holds up. It's a must have for any Steinberg fan. It will also be a great companion to the new David Steinberg memoir "The Book of David" from Simon and Schuster.

5 out of 5 stars smart funny and not dirty.......2007-05-29

This is comedy the way it should be. It is smart. David is extremely smart yet very funny. He makes fun of religion in a funny way. It is never mean sprited The track on Mosses is priceless. I saw in live in 1970 and it is still funny today.

Laurie Anderson is something of a missionary. Having endured the scorn of some influential avant-garde peers for "selling out" (by signing to a major label and taking her live shows to a relatively large, mainstream audience), Anderson instead chose to challenge their assumptions, proving by default that they were as ossified as anything in the so-called mainstream. Anderson also chose not to define herself strictly as an artist, but as a storyteller and de facto humorist--and one that dared point out that her chosen venue of "performance art" wasn't particularly avant at all. Or that the dreaded cliché was often merely the most efficient way to make a story point. This generous double-disc anthology charts the arc of Anderson's adventurous "mainstream" recording career, from the minimalist, unlikely Euro-hit "O Superman" through 15 years of ever more ambitious studio recordings and live shows. Tellingly, as Anderson's ambitions and acceptance grew, so did her playful warmth and often self-deprecating humor. Indeed, much of this set is an implicit jab at the implicit elitism of the so-called avant-garde--or is it their jealousy? --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars This CD is okay if you like Laurie's poetry........2006-03-04

Disk one is more poetry than music. Disk two has more music, but many of the songs are off her "Strange Angels" CD. I bought the disk mainly for "Language is A Virus". In retrospect, I would have been better off buying the song from iTunes for $0.99.

4 out of 5 stars Difficult Music.......2005-09-25

"Difficult Music" is a track composed by Laurie Anderson to introduce one of her song / stories. It's also an excellent way to descibe a majority of her work. She has never been a pop artist. So it's misleading to think this collection is a "greatest hits" retrospective. Laurie Anderson, the performance artist from New York City, has very few tracks that received radio or video airplay. Even when singles were released like "O Superman" and "Sharkey's Day", they were hardly soaring up the charts. Yet she worthy of this release for changing the way we think of performance art today and music in general.

A better description is an anthology of Ms. Anderson's works from her Warner Bros. years from 1981 through 1995. In that respect, it covers most of the essential tracks that were not just popular amongst her fans but shows the diversity of her work. True, "O Superman" is a fantastic minimalist piece that hit the pop scene especially in Europe. But she can go the other way too, like the comedic and carribean influenced "Babydoll" about a conversation with her brain ("He says, take me to your leader". And I said, "Do you mean George"? He said "I just want to meet him". And I said "C'mon, like, I don't even know George"!). Most of her works deal with the battle of the sexes and inability to communicate ("It Tango", "Laguage d'Amour"), travel ("Big Science", "Lighting Out For The Territories"), and oddities of life. As her recordings progress, we get the increased sense of fear creeping into her work. Fear from society's woes like war ("Night In Baghdad"), AIDS ("Love Amongst The Sailors"), and jealousy ("Poison").

The collection ends appropraitely with selections from "The Ugly One With The Jewels", tracks that were recorded live on stage. Not songs, but spoken stories of her youth and from encounters from years of touring accompanied with minimal musical background. Ms. Anderson has always considered herself first and foremost a storyteller. Her stories are always given a slightly artistic tweak and become introspective searches of who we are as people and how we relate to others. "Talk Normal" is a quality look back at one of the more creative and interesting recording and performance artists today.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect overview of Laurie Anderson's career.......2004-02-17

New to Laurie Anderson? Then you must shell out 30 bucks to pick up her anthology Talk Normal. I'm glad i did. How can you resist such great songs such as O Superman, Sharkey's Day, Smoke Rings, and Language Is A Virus? Just buy this already, i also recommend United States Live.

4 out of 5 stars Laurie good..re-mixes Bad.......2002-09-24

I totally agree with Mark. Messing around with "Sharkeys Day" is a bad idea anyway you look at it. Otherwise its a nice trip down memory lane for a lot of us..and for the potential new fans, its a good start on their journey; (and believe me..being a LA fan Is a journey!)
Something else i would recommend is the recent "Laurie Anderson Live at town hall New York City September 19-20 2001" recorded just after the 9/11 mess in which she,on the fly, inserted some songs from Big Science. Not an easy task because she had to re-vamp her gizmos to sound sort of like her old analog stuff..and playing old "hits" usually isnt in her repertoire.

4 out of 5 stars Love Ms. Anderson, but still dislike re-mixes...........2001-08-01

I had very high hopes for this anthology, but was indeed disappointed to discover that many of the cuts were re-mixed. Rarely, have I ever heard a re-mix that was superior in quality to the original release. This is especially so in Ms. Anderson's case, where the original material is always of such high and sublime quality.

Album Description

"Normal" brings you into the world of an insane musician who takes medication and experiences what it's like to be 'normal' for the first time. The only problem is that the medicine silences his ability to make music. Eventually he must choose which life he wants. The songs on Normal follow his real-life journey, leaving you to ponder, "What's 'normal,' anyway?"

5 out of 5 stars The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Pop Rock.......2006-04-16

Finally someone got it right; Blending virtuosity with great songwriting and making it work in a poppy and marketable format. I honestly can't think of one significant instance of this phenomenon since the 80's. Congratulations to Bumblefoot. Hopefully one day they will market this well enough to be as popular and timeless as it deserves to be.
But one thing is for sure, this is one of the best albums I've ever heard, period.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2006-01-16

Ron's best CD to date, and, for me, the best album to come out in all 2005.

Super great. Just hear "Overloaded", the insanity of "Real" and the feeling of "Pretty Ugly".

Sharp lyrics, insane guitar and extemelly nice music.

Bumblefoot kicks ass!

5 out of 5 stars A delightful adventure in abnormality..........2006-01-06

The newest installment in the Bumblefoot catalog is "Normal", which explores the idea of what it means to be normal in society and whether it's really worth altering oneself in order to fit. But despite it's name, "Normal" contains many of the quirky, out of the ordinary musical features that make it noticeably Bumblefoot.

While it is a very catchy and pop-punk induced record, it is not without a great display of talent. The guitar playing, arranging, and vocal performances are all wonderfully done. Ron Thal shows once again that he's not only a masterful guitar player, but also an outstanding singer. Dennis Leeflang commands the drums with wonderful beatwork to bounce you along the rollercoaster adventure.

Compared to Ron's previous work, this may be a more "together" album, returning to the musical unity found in his Sophomore effort, "Hermit". It displays the continued vocal strength of "Uncool" and a focus on the guitar from "9.11". All of Ron's releases have been brilliantly formed and this is no exception.

5 out of 5 stars Another awsome cd from Ron Thal's Bumblefoot.......2005-12-28

It's off the wall and on the hard side, kind of like Hands. funny words mixed with ron's guitar playing. I think it's real good.
