4 out of 5 stars The Man Who's Gotten Everything !.......2007-07-03

Captain Sensible (diamond geezer, one of the best, blah blah), is in an admirably unique position.
For a start, his musical legacy is actually rather good. He produces sharp, warm little pop tunes at the drop of a beret, that DO stand up to close scrutiny . If you (like me) have a deep and profound understanding of everything to do with pop music, you'll spot very quickly that the trick here is to take him completely seriously.
This achieved, you can then begin to position him in pop's hierarchy, and of course start making sage pronouncements that he's better than Springsteen, solo Weller and Robbie Williams. Not really that startling when you think about it. Listen to `Martha the Mouth' and name me one song from the over-rated trinity aforementioned (yeay!) that's better than it. Cant do it can you? Don't worry, you've just challenged `absolute rock truths' number273, and triumphed easily. Feel good? Come on in, the waters fine.
Secondly he has a priceless punk pedigree as a guitar player in those evil masters of dark, dry- ice inhaling, satanic, manic, violent disorder (etc) the Damned! Gasp!
Think what you will, they were there first and deserve some respect for that, erm...and that's about all. Better than Chelsea....maybe.
Best of all in my opinion, is the fact he seems to have some sort of cod-philosophy, which he expounds slivers of every now and again, without ever having any intention (or intellectual ability!) of revealing its, obviously deeply subversive, ideology. This is absolutely brilliant! Imagine Madonna having-something-interesting-to-say-to-her-fans, or deadly serious rock kids NOT falling sound asleep every time Bono opens his mouth. You're imagining a bigger, brighter world.
He's embraced the pop deity, sold his soul to the fun-demon, and he's writing things like `And now the time has come to say, farewell dad and your baked-beans, and the tv set, that I blew.' in a song about selling out (the punk rockers' perennial dilemma) and moving to America! This, of course, aint NEVER gonna happen, but why he's not a bigger star mystifies me. Why has he not replaced Richard Madeley or Gordon Ramsey? Why don't we see him, mad as a badger, EVERY DAY!? Think how much better our kids would turn out, watch the crime figures plummet!
`And rice doesn't burn, in a Japanese urn, it's reality!' Is it just me? This stuff is terrific! Leaves you with a smile, and who, in this decade of total pop miserablism, is gonna knock that?
Madly looking forward to the dream duet of Sensible and that other neglected genius; John Shuttleworth. Seriously.

4 out of 5 stars One geat song is missing.......2007-03-05

Where is ONE CHRISTMAS CATALOG!!!!! One Christmas Catalog is the best Captian Sensible songs out there and I heard it in a clothing store last Christmas. It should be on this cd and Happy Talk should be deleted.

5 out of 5 stars Captain Sensible.......2005-09-30

I purchased this album as a mistake as it was the wrong "Captain" group. Best mistake I've made for quite a while. What a cracker. If you're a baby boomer like me and long for the music that rekindles your best times get this one. If there's a weak track I'd like to know which one it is.

3 out of 5 stars Category of it's own.......2005-08-04

Captain sensible is inspired in his own english pop world.Happy, funny, absurd, ironic and melodic songs. Some are good some are bad,but still essential for the 80's.Listen to the sublime and divine"Glad It's all over"over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars WE WILL TAKE IT, BABY!.......2004-04-15

Yeah, OK, it's not complete but.... with an artist as prolific as Captain Sensible, how could one disc ever hope to capture all of his incredibly exceptional output? there's NO WAY! The Capt'n was so sly in his ability to write a pure pop song and make it sound dangerous (with D. Vanian) or innocuous/affecting in his solo ventures. It's just unbelievable that his cover of "Relax (Don't Do It)" wasn't included! I play that on my turntable at parties in Palm Desert and the reaction is, to say the least, enthusiastic. The movie dialogue from "Coma" is especially cool, nobody can ever place it, yet this is a song that will dwell in obscurity forever it seems. Finally, I must say that these A&M songs were being held captive FOR YEARS by his former American label, and they were EXTREMELY reluctant to let go of them, for whatever reason. Legal eagles always seem to get in the way of art. But the scarcity of these songs make this disc all the more essential. The fact that they are reissued at last on CD is a pure revelation and those that have even a passing knowledge of The Damned should take advantage. And, the choice producer Tony Mansfield (the first to capture Ray's pop sensibility and expand on it!) should get credit as well for an incredible ear. I have bought no less than 11 copies of this CD for close friends and every single one of them have been overwhelmed by the Captain cornucopia on display, and the dividend pays overwhelming rewards. Ignore that awful Cleopatra "best of" comp at all costs. In my opinion, this comes closest to capturing Sir Burns' spirit, verve and intrepid endeavors. Cheers to the Captain and his incredible creative output during the 1980's - Dude, you're immortal. Too bad Rat couldn't take the heat.

5 out of 5 stars I said 'Captain....'.......2001-11-21

'He said, 'wot?'
We heard this song in Amsterdam played over a channel selection guide on TV and it literally took me years to track it down. Yes, the rest of the album is bizarre, but this song was in my head for so long. I'm thrilled/relieved/deliriously happy to finally have it on disc to play endlessly. And relive Amsterdam.

5 out of 5 stars The first couple of reviewers are complete Doo Doo Heads.......2001-03-24

Well, just that . They are Doo Doo heads. They know nothing about great music. Unlike Captain, who is not a Doo Doo head and makes the best music there is . This album is great. Wankers Away ! And What's the gripe about sound quality? Hell,I can hear it!!

2 out of 5 stars Oh well, at least Captain got some cash for it..........2000-08-25

It's a truly unfortunate state of affairs when this is the best collection of Captain's early work on CD.

Since I'm not too big a fan of the newer stuff, I bought this for the old stuff and was left wanting for it. The sound quality is awful and the songs mostly unrecognizable. At this point I'm about ready to buy a CD-Recorder and a turntable so I can put my old Captain vinyl on CD-R.

Too bad too, as this way, no one really comes out happy...

1 out of 5 stars Not A Sensible Choice.......1999-01-18

Fans of the Captain beware. Although this album's title suggests these are original recordings, most of them are from live performances. If you're looking for the brilliant and hilarious original studio versions of songs like "Glad It's All Over," "Smash It Up Part IV," and "Happy Talk," this is not the album to buy. Cleopatra Records ought to be ashamed of itself for such blatant false advertising.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Recording.......1998-09-03

Due to the Captain's disputes with his former record label, there is no other way to get the good Captain's early solo music than to get it on a live recording. This compilation offers many of those early titles, but the recording and music quality is so poor, it does not even sound like the Cap. My advise: wait for a better compilation, there are enough fans of the Captain to get the old stuff away from his old record label.

4 out of 5 stars Uber Hipsters may not "Get" this one with NO TREND .......2005-12-10

Those who are looking for the latest greatest trendy hip sound that some under assistant west coast promo man is pushing are going to be disappointed with this one.

Those who think... maybe 4.5 stars...

This is a little story, about a misunderstood thoughtful guy with a creepy unthinking wife and the cute bike riding girl he finds and the creepy corporate business types who don't understand him and the aliens who pick him to be the person with whom they will first communicate because he's a good guy. Star Wars fans looking for silly grandiosity need not apply. The story is slowly fleshed out between the songs. The songs support the story. The songs are mostly well crafted "nice pop" tunes with some Jimi Hendrix thrown in for good measure. The Captain is not stupid. Many of us think he WAS the Damned. He knows about guys like Terry Riley too. There are some subtleties here.

Anyway like the title says it's about the "WORLD" of Geoffrey Brown, his viewpoint on the world and his fortune (the girl) or misfortunes (his wife, his bosses). Of course it's really Captain Sensible's view point that is being exposed here. Bicycles, environmentalism, anticorporate resistance, neighborhoods, good natured humor and beautiful good hearted normal girls who don't try to be uber hip.

I don't think the Captain thinks to much of the trendy trendy trendy Uber hip fringe so I don't really think he cares if they will like this or not. It's a modest overlooked jem in the Captain's discography. I suspect he likes it a lot although it didn't sell very well. I like it a lot.

      2 out of 5 stars dont bother.......2001-09-27

i got this cd 6 years ago and i didnt listen to it even 3 times the production is amateur it sounds like a long pathetic demo.the music is also popish trash.there is so much other good music to check out ,i cant understand why would anybody want to buy this one.

The Universe of Geoffrey Brown is a dynamic concept album by Captain Sensible. Environmentalism and conspiracies are some of the themes. Captain Sensible plays several instruments and the songs and music are both surreal and catchy. He is the most talented and visionary member of the Damned. If you like Syd Barrett and XTC, you will love Captain Sensible. His vocals are very endearing.

      3 out of 5 stars Great idea.......2006-02-01

The conceit is music associated one way or another with the great artist Francisco Goya. Stylistically it ranges from early 19th century Fernando Sor to the prominent modern composer and educator Angelo Gilardino.
The idea works very well as a concept, and I think it would work as well as a recital program.
Unfortunately, William Feasley cannot really pull it off. Some of this music is very technically difficult, and Feasley often finds himself on very thin ice. Anyone who has heard Julian Bream's recording of transcriptions of Albeniz and Granados is bound to be disappointed (for example) by Feasley's renderings of excerpts from
      "Goyescas".
Still, as an intermediate guitarist who could stand to learn more about repertoire, finding the "Caprichos de Goya" by Castelnuovo-Tedesco was a delight.
I would recommend this album to anyone who would appreciate a well-constructed program of interesting music, who is not going to be put off by the more than occasional clams and errors.

I saw The Shapes live many times. They were as fun to go watch as they are to listen to on this CD. I remember their Peel Sessions on the BBC well. It's nice to finally have all their stuff together with unreleased tracks again, and some of it sounds like it was recorded yesterday. They don't make it like this anymore !

All of Captain Sensible's solo recordings are melodic, experimental and even include a slice of pop. "The Stately Homes Of Emgland", "Mr. Brown's Exploding Wallet" and "One Hit Wonders" should have been UK hits. Captain Sensible is a dedicated vegetarian and animal advocate who savages farmers and the meat industry in the song "Mr. Farmer". I respect the Damned because they are iconic punk legends. However, Captain Sensible's CDS are more creative and could appeal to a larger audience. If you liked Syd Barret then it is certain that Sensible will appeal to you. "Bob's Brown Nose" is a great song that could have been on an early Pink Floyd Album.
