5 out of 5 stars Rennaissance music at it's finest!.......2007-06-29

This was my first Renaissance music album and the broad styles of several composers were very well represented, especially Michael Pretorius, probably the most well-known composer of his time. The tonal quality sparkles and the latin language comes alive (along with English translation in the included booklet); be prepared for an aural "feast" of some of the more eclectic music from the Renaissance period!

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-04

To quote from the accompanying booklet seems to be in order to start this review: "This collection attempts to wipe the dust from some old ideas and restore music from the Middle Ages and Renaissance to its roots deep in the human soul.........What you're listening to on this disc is not the domain of museums, but the music of the people, born of faith and the love of song and dance".
This is a varied group of works, some dances, some strictly instrumental and some accompanied vocal.
The role of dancing, as you might suspect, was enormously important in this era. 'Le Bouree' showcases the dance music of the composer Michael Praetorius. The 'Bransles de Villages' is of French origin and features 2 violins, 2 violas, a cello, a great bass viol, hurdy-gurdy and 2 lutes. 'La scesa de Pastori dal Monte' is an Italian dance by Andrea Ansalone. Another dance written by Michael Praetorious was the 'Volte' which actually involved 4 short dances. It was considered not respectable because of the close contact between the dancers.
The strictly instrumental songs are : 'Dum pater familias' is called a pilgrim song, and it was religious in nature. And, of course, all the dance songs are instrumental.
The vocally oriented songs are: 'Quen a Virgin ben servira' is a song taken from a collection of songs about the miracles attributed to the Virgin Mary.-Three of the songs are from the famous 'Carmina Burana' manuscript.- 'Orientis partibus' is from the 'Feast of fools'which was a feast held by the church itself in which the status of the church herarchy was reversed as inferior clergy assumed the role of their superiors.-'Stella Splendours' is another pilgrim song; this song was sung by pilgrims who went to worship as the Shrine of the Virgin at Montserrat.

I always trust the quality of a CD when Philip Pickett and the New London Consort are involved. This album is very interesting, but I would hope that this would be classified as the more "pop" type music of the period. Also, I don't think that I personally would call it early music, as is indicated in the accompanying booklet. Today that term brings to mind Monteverdi, Cavalli, Palestrina, the Scarlatti's, up to and including Handel and Bach etc.. Just a personal reaction on my part. This is a very well put together disc.

4 out of 5 stars A good sampler of New London Consort's work.......2006-12-20

Although there's nothing special about this disc as a compilation, it does provide a value-priced sampling of 17 tracks from the New London Consort's excellent recorded work. Given that so many of their recordings are difficult to find on CD at a reasonable price, and that one of my personal favorites ("Bache bene venies", from their masterful 4-CD recording of the Carmina Burana) is included here, I'd recommend this CD as a great place to start while you search for the original releases.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent renditions of lively 'old music'........2005-11-23

'Sinners & Saints' by Philip Pickett and the New London Consort is just a bit too ambitious with their subtitle, 'The Ultimate Medieval and Renaissance Music Collection' as I find it hard to believe that 70 minutes can be the ultimate anything on 500 years of history. This is especially true since they seem to focus a lot more on the sinners than the saints, as there is virtually no liturgical music here. But, since there are so many good recordings of medieval liturgies, we aren't missing much.

This is really the sort of thing you would expect to hear from a travelling troupe of minstrals, but not from a solo artist, as practically every performance involves several instruments and voices.

Some tracks will sound especially familiar, as they are very similar to Carl Orff's 'Carmina Burana', inspired by medieval texts.

Compared to many recordings of music from Shakespeare's time, this collection is superior and well worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure of the Time Period.......2005-08-11

I bought this CD with a children's history class in mind. We are studying the Dark Ages to the Rennaisance. I was delighted to hear the variety of selections which span the spectrum of genres during this period of history. My children and I have been listening to it in the car as well as at home for the simple enjoyment of the music. It will be exciting to present these pieces to my class as I feel it is a very accurate display of the cultures, instrumentation, languages, and styles of the Middle Ages. I am a proffesional musician and thoroughly enjoy most types of music so it wasn't hard to get me interested but I was surprised to hear my eight-year-old and five-year-old sons asking to hear this CD. The former child said it made him feel "important" to listen!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable.......2005-01-28

I have listened to this CD a great deal and I love it. I just want to answer vvic's point below: it's true that not all the tracks on this disc are rumbustious romps, but Renaissance dance had many different forms, genres and functions. It was an important means of personal expression and social interaction - you only need to think of the formal and ritualised minefield that surrounded love and courtship (especially in the higher strata of society) to be able to see dance's potency as an emotional outlet. In fact, dancing quickly was the one thing that would have been difficult because costume was often bulky and ungainly, especially for ladies.

So give these performances a chance, because this disc is bursting with life and musicianship: The King's Noyse play like a group of old friends together; Andrew Lawrence-King's harp playing is enchanting, and Ellen Hargis produces richly nuanced, beautifully coloured and poignant performances of the laments. The whole mixture is delighful.

It's also superbly engineered: the sound is detailed, rich, vibrant and delicate. (It's set in a fairly warm acoustic, which may partly account for vvic's feeling of 'churchiness'.) A pity there are no sound samples here on Amazon.

I presume this is a re-release of an earlier disc. The budget savings come from corners cut in packaging - the booklet is fairly perfunctory, but as my Dad says, 'you pays your money. you takes your choice'!

ps. I'm a really terrible dancer!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2003-05-04

I am a big fan of renaissance instrumental music, and since these are dances, I was expecting some pleasant, spirited melodies, like on the excellent English Country Dances. Although there are several tracks like this on this CD, many are slow and dirgy. These, combined with the tracks with soprano vocals, make one feel as if they were in church, which is not a bad thing, if that's what you're looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Gratzi for the Italian Renaissance.......2002-03-24

The sounds of the Italian Renaissance are very uplifting, beautiful and rational. The songs have structure and melody and flow very naturally. This collection is a pleasing variety of instrumental and vocal music with period instruments and authentic arrangements. The performances and sound quality are extremely good.

I don't know if I should feel guilty for having spent so little on this CD or irritated that more CDs of this quality are not available at this price. The other releases I have heard from the Classical Express label have been as good. (e.g. Mozart Horn Concertos, French Love Songs)

5 out of 5 stars refreshing, sprightly and fun.......2001-07-12

THis is a sprightly and thoroughly well performed arrangement of Renaisaaance music. If you think there is no place for such period music think again. I snuck this on while entertaining and everyone began complimenting it. They loved the joyful upbeat quality it posseses and as I, were delighted with the quality of musicianship and recording. Give that next dinner party a historical twist or just give yourself this wonderful CD

This stunner of an opera involves the proud sultan Bajazet (bass) and his battle with his bloodthirsty rival-tyrant Tamerlane (counter-tenor). More than 50 operas were composed on the subject. Here Vivaldi has composed all the recitatives and marvelous arias for the dignified, fine characters and used arias by other composers--Hasse, Giacomelli, Carlo Broschi--for Tamerlano and the nasties. The music is energetic and virtuosic throughout. Fabio Biondi leads Europa Galante and soloists with urgent, theatrical precision, making the story come to life. The singing could not be better: Ildebrando d'Arcangelo is a remarkably sympathetic Bajazet, singing with fluency and power; David Daniels amazes as Tamerlano; Marijana Mijanovic sings the role of Asteria (Bajazet's daughter) with love and precision; and Viveca Genaux dazzles with her perfect coloratura as Irene. This is a treasure trove of singing, and a bonus DVD allows us to see/hear the performers in rehearsal. Highly recommended. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Monumental Recording.......2007-03-14

From the same composer that
brought us "The four Seasons"
Antonio Vivaldi, comes this
'dramma per musica' it tells
us the story of Bajazet, a Turkish
leader who ruled vast portions of
the Ottoaman empire, and his defeat
by his great foe, Tamerlano(Timur Lenk).
In the past composers like Handel and
others had taken an interest in the story.
This is the World Premiere recording of
the work. Much musicological research was done
by conductor and violinist Fabio Biondi and others
to put together this monumental recording. As personally
for me this is the first complete opera that
I hear by Vivaldi. This opera comes with a
DVD that features all six soloists in an aria.
Europa Galante and Maestro Biondi do a wonderful
job, and the soloists are great. Wonderful work,
thank you Maestro Biondi...

5 out of 5 stars Simply fantastic.......2007-02-28

This is one of the best recordings that I have bought recently. The entire opera is a treasure, and they couldn't have picked a better cast. Vivica Genaux, Elina Garanca, and David Daniels are especially strong, and Fabio Biondi's orchestra is always clean and polished. The recording quality is also top-notch. It's unlike me not to offer some kind of a criticism, but I can't think of one for this recording. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Marvellous fun and great singing.......2006-09-19

I have to say that I prefer Handel's Tamerlano for musical reasons. However, Vivaldi's opera on the same subject is very enjoyable and entertaining. Like it has been said of the operas of Haydn, Vivaldi's operas are not great operas, but they do contain great music.

Europa Galante, directed from the 1st violin by Fabio Biondi, is in great form and I've never heard them play better. I have their older recording of Handel's opera Poro, and I enjoyed that one, too.
The singers here are an excellent ensemble. I like the dark and expressive voice of Ildebrando D'Arcangelo - he was also marvellous as Leporello in Gardiner's Don Giovanni. David Daniels is fantastic, as usual, and he is possibly the best operatic countertenor in the world at the moment. Patrizia Ciofi is best heard and not seen - sweet voice coming from a madwoman (check out the DVD!). Vivica Genaux has been hyped to within a centimetre of her life recently. She has a nice flexible mezzo voice. A little too much vibrato for my tastes and she looks like a chipmunk when she attacks coloratura passages. Marijana Mijanovic sings well - she was excellent as the neurotic Penelope in the Christie / L.A.F. DVD of Monteverdi's Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in patria. She is alarmingly thin - possible health problems? She doesn't engage with the conductor or orchestra at all in the DVD - the only singer who doesn't. Elina Garanca looks beautiful (and healthy!) and sings beautifully. She has a lovely contralto voice. I hope I see and hear more from this artist in the future.

I am not a big fan of Vivaldi's operas - I enjoy them as collections of arias. I wonder how well Bajazet worked on stage?
I'd love to have a DVD of this production, I would like to see how a Vivaldi opera works on stage. Vivaldi's operas don't have imaginative scorings and the orchestral passages are fairly prosaic. A lot of what goes on in the Vivaldi operas I've heard (I have a few in my CD collection) is pretty routine. However, I am open minded on the subject and I would like to see how well a Vivaldi opera works on stage.

5 out of 5 stars Worth it!.......2006-05-23

This album exceeded my expectations. In the true pasticcio form, Vivaldi copied and pasted other composers' work, and his own of previous operas. The arias are un-paralleled in harmony, balance, up-beat rhythm, and beauty. The orchestration by Fabio Biondi is first rate and world class. Vivica Genaux rocks in her interpretation of "Qual Guerriero in Campo Armato" as so much energy, control, and speed are gushed out at once and sustained without wavering. Her ornamentation in the da capo aria is amazing. Vivica's voice is powerful, ethereal, and acrobatic. She recreates what a castrato voice might have sounded like, beautiful and strong. While Vivica sings perfectly the most demanding and technically difficult aria of the opera, Ciofi delights us with the most beautiful "Nasce rosa". After listening to her, it would be near to impossible to imagine anyone else singing this aria with such charm. But what she excelled at "Nasce", she lacked at "Anche il mar". This aria is perhaps as technically and impossibly challenging as "Qual guerriero", but Ciofi's coloratura is discontinuous. Cecilia Bartoli executes this aria in her Vivaldi Album stunningly in one breath. If there was ever a team of opera gold medalists, that team is put together in this album. Ildebrando's "Dov'e la Figla?" is a handsome showcase of his voice and strong presence. While his singing is worthy of high praise, his hand movements and wedding band flashing might have already cost him 90% of his fan base, not to mention dashing his chances at becoming a teen idol or gay icon. His comportment at the high note of the aria is reminiscent of an opera Olympiad doing a vocal triple summersault in mid-air and sticking a perfect landing. "Dov'e la figlia?" is also an aria that illustrates the great genius of Vivaldi as an opera composer. He wrote very distinct music for the same lyrics and for different registers (basso and castrato) in Bajazet, and Motezuma (with Dominique Visse). At the same time, he used the identical music for two different lyrics in Motezuma, and Orlando Furioso (Sorge l'irato Nembo). The bonus DVD proves not only interesting but also very entertaining at the gesticulations and facial configurations sometimes taken for granted to sing bel canto's finest arias. Superb job!

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, but one tiny qualm !.......2006-04-20

While I agree with all the good things that have been written of this splendid perfomance, there is a small, but I feel important, detail about the recording which I find vexing.
When a recitative is is sung the performers are placed across the audio stage, disposed left or right,as you will. When an aria is sung ,the soloist leaps to the very center of the sound stage, which is quite disconcerting, especially when listening through headphones. This points to the arias and recits being recorded in separate sessions.Nothing wrong with that given the ravishing perfomance.Well worth the purchase price.

5 out of 5 stars have been searching for this for years.......2007-06-11

Happy to see the Collegium Terpsichore CD out again (disc 1), though hiding in this bargain set, wasn't immediately obvious. But one listen to the Praetorius samples and knew I found it. This album was played continuously on the air on KKHI when I was in college (circa late-hippie_, and I never tired of it. I wore out my LPs. Now I've misplaced that single CD so might have to buy it again if I can't locate it soon. Phooey. At least it's available. It's the most refreshing CD you'll ever put on your player.

5 out of 5 stars Been looking for years.......2007-02-13

I have been looking for the Deutsche Grammophon "Dances from Terpsicore" from the 60's but to no avail till now. The entire album is included in this two disc set...

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction to Renaissance Dance.......2005-06-23

This is my first disc of Renaissance dance music, for which I have been searching for quite a while. I thought ir was very excellent. I have heard some before when I was in a few Shakespeare plays, and ever since, I have been looking. These selections provide a broad range of the music of the courts during the 15th and 16th centuries. There is music from all over Europe, including what sounds like Southeastern Europe. The interpretations are also very good, and they put me, at least, back into that time period. The only problem I found was the glockenspiel like instrument, which was sometimes a little annoying. Otherwise, wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars renaissance dance music.......2004-10-24

This CD is a compilation of three recordings which are From The Vault: Dance Music of the High Renaissance by Fritz Neumeyer, Dance Music of the Renaissance by Josef Ulsamer, and Early Baroque Music by Konrad Ragossnig.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful reissue from early days of early music recordings.......2004-01-28

This cd is a reissue of material from several albums in the 60s. The Fritz Neumeyer recordings of Praetorius are from an old Archiv LP that was one of my first introductions to "early music", and it can be charged that it was more enthusiastic than historically informed. A recorder consort will take up one section of a tune, and then a group of viols will swirl in, maybe followed by crumhorns playing another brief phrase, and then a solo harpsichord finishing off the tune. Different instruments provide a variety of textures of sound, keeping things interesting even though most of the tunes are played fairly "straight", without a lot of improvisation. There's been quite a bit of research and rediscovery of Renaissance techniques since this record was first out, and I appreciate those, but these old recordings really get my toe tapping and remind me why I fell in love with early music in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars You've never heard "The Godfather" like this.......2003-08-13

For me the highlight of this disc is a short suite from "Rocco and His Brothers," with some pungent accordion work and 1950's jazz influences. This is glorious and rarely performed music, and conductor Riccardo Muti and the fine La Scala musicians should be thanked for presenting it so beautifully. (The film itself, available on DVD, is one of Visconti's best and well worth seeking out.) But there isn't a stale moment anywhere.

The melancholy themes from "The Godfather" have probably never been played so well. The famous opening trumpet solo, combining loneliness and menace in equal parts, is beautifully done, as are the relatively upbeat selections from "8-1/2" and "La Dolce Vita." Throughout the production, it is marvelous to hear these scores played with such passion and commitment, and the La Scala musicians sound sweepingly involved.

But for many listeners the highlight will be the dazzling and haunting waltzes from "The Leopard," with their melodic arcs echoing the grand scale of Visconti's masterpiece. This is truly evocative film writing.

An excellent introduction to Rota's music, played with suave intensity by one of the best conductors in the world. (For those interested, Muti and La Scala recorded another Rota CD with additional dances from "The Leopard," as well as music from "La Strada" and the "Concerto for Strings" -- also highly recommended.)

5 out of 5 stars Italian Scala and Muti feels Rota!.......2001-07-25

Perhaps this is the most powerfull collection of film music of Nino Rota, and Muti knows and feel this music. Splendid perfomance and sound.

What most of Jose Jose's fans don't know is that when his first records were released, the bolero was giving way to the contemporary pop ballad. This CD is therefore a tribute of sorts to his musical roots and consists of twelve of his hits re-recorded in a "Trio" format (with some beautiful acoustic guitar work). A very original project.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Charming, Delicate Performance.......2003-03-26

"Cenerentola" is Rossini at his best. The music is manic, engaging and funny, and Marriner and his orchestra and cast are up to the challenge without a weak link amongst them.

Agnes Baltsa plays the lead on this album. The chief rival on recording is of course the version with Cecilia Bartoli as Cinderella and Enzo Dara as Don Magnifico. Where Ms. Bartoli is a showman pulling notes out of left field and displaying a triumphant coloratura, Agnes Baltsa sticks to a more dramatically truthful portrayal. Her Cinderella is both thoughtful and forgiving. Where Ms. Bartoli is spectacular, Ms. Baltsa is beautiful. She gives a real characterization to a girl trapped by a dysfunctional family.

Francisco Araiza as the prince is a real treat. He has a good comic touch and a voice that blends tremendously well with Ms. Baltsa's. Mr. Araiza wins out in all aspects in regards to the role of the Prince compared to the other recordings available.

The Duet when Cinderella and the Prince meet is a burst of pure happiness where Araiza and Baltsa actually take the time to match each others coloratura phrasing virtually note for note, instead of showing off individually, which really delivers the full emotional payoff of Rossini's composing. It's as if these two were meant for each other, not because the music has them declare their love through coloratura passages, but because when they do, they're already in perfect synch.

The stand out performance on this album is that of Ruggero Raimondi as Don Magnifico. Truly, this is a magnificent man. I was laughing out loud during his performance. While he has never tackled the role on stage, you would hardly know it. On the other recording his rival is Enzo Dara, who in my opinion is a better Don Magnifico, but Raimondi finds such humor in Rossini's delightful music that it make this a recording well worth owning. His aria about the dignified donkey is worth the price of the CD alone... and he's got three more great songs to come. He takes a few of the songs at a noticably slower pace than Dara, but he gives you a delightful performance during the wait.

A few other things that stand out are the ensemble "Cenerentola, vien qua" which is taken at such a clip that it hardly seems possible. Also, in the ensembles the singers make sure to blend harmonies without showing each other up like on the other available recordings.

Dandini and Alidoro or very capable, Dandini is particularly amusing, and Clorina and Tisbe are hands down the best sisters on recording.

If You follow my advice, buy this recording. It's wonderful.

4 out of 5 stars Live tribute album plenty of romantic singers........2000-02-19

ENGLISH: This tribute was recorded in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, when Jose Jose was in a terrible situation because he falled into alcohol abuse again (you can see it in his look with less weight in the cover). Later he surpassed the situation, of course, but maybe that's why it was so emotive this album.

Jose Jose sings with soften voice in "40 Y 20" at the beginning, but with a clean, strong and unforgettable voice at the end of the album in "Voy A Llenarte Toda" (with great orchestra), " La Nave Del Olvido" and "El Triste" (his greatest hits). It really shows how it was the live performance of "The Prince" in the 90's.

Also, you will find other hits of Jose Jose performed with other latin stars: "Lo que no fue no sera" performed by his own composer, Napoleon, "Pero te extraño" with his composer Armando Manzanero, "Me Basta", with Rocio Durcal, " Amar y Querer" with Guadalupe Pineda, The first verse of "Si me dejas ahora" with composer Camilo Sesto, "Amar y Querer" and "Gavilan o Paloma" performed with piano by Raul DiBlasio, "Lo Pasado Pasado" performed by Eugenia Leon, and a great duet of Jose Jose with Marco Antonio Muñiz performing "Tiempo", the same as they did in the 70's.
