While North American rap drowns in its own clichés, international artists are invigorating the genre with their own musical traditions. The Orishas, a Cuban group based in France, use Afro-Cuban religion to summon the spirit of hip-hop. Named for gods of Santeria, they came together in 1998 when members Yotuel and Ruzzo hooked up with Roldan and Flaco-Pro (a veteran of Sergeant Garcia) through a cultural exchange program between French and Cuban rappers. Collaborating with French hip-hop producer Miko Niko, they bring the attitude of Havana streets to the rest of the world, appealing to the Buena Vista Social Club crowd as well as the hip-hop heads. On their debut, A lo Cubano, the song "537 C.U.B.A." (their remake of Compay Segundo's "Chan Chan") gives new meaning to the term "old school." And the sound of sacred Santeria beats and traditional son weaving through sharp-edged lyrical attacks with groove-heavy bass and drum tracks on tunes like "Represent," "Atención," and "Atrevido" make for a cool joyride through the back streets of Havana. --Jesse "Chuy" Varela

Great music!.......2007-03-09
I love that CD. I only new a couple songs from that band but the whole CD is good.
The Good and The Bad.......2007-02-28
Yea baby, when the Cubans are out all others should go to school to catch up or just go home. This cats should embarrass all those Puerto Rican "artists" with their STUPID reggaeton trash, with their over repeated monotonous beats and over promoted junk, just hype(let's be fair and exclude Tego & Voltio). If Cuba were not under a communist tyranny that even controls the music that can be done, so it does not sound too "imperialist" (ask Arturo Sandoval) Cuba would rule in this genre the same way they did musically back in their capitalistic days. This Orisha guys (who got out of Cuba) are more than proof of the talent that is wasted just like everything else in Cuba right now.
It is mostly a fusion of Cuban flow and rap that reminds me of the mentality in some of the fusions of Dr. Dre with 70's American funk & r&b. However, as great as the music is, lyrically this guys are pretty ambiguous, non-understandable, meaningless, and dull. Lyrically they are pu$$ies, simple. There is a lot that should be said and they don't say, to be allowed back in Cuba to shoot their videos and use it as their back ground, the $$ are there for a reason. They are not representing or speaking for anyone, they got out and forgot the abusive slavish regime that bounds Cubans? Maybe it is the producers, I don't know. But I do know that in a genre as unrestricted as rap this is called being a PU$$Y.
Lo Mejor de lo Mejor!.......2006-03-31
When Orishas released this CD I was still living in Cuba. I used to listen to these songs all day long with my friends. Then I moved to US and what can I tell you? 537 Cuba is like an anthem for me because it really tells the reality about the feelings of Cuban people and perhaps every person that lefts his country likes us. On the other hand, these guys are amazing! The mixture of rap with traditional Cuban music is something original, out of this world. I don't like hip hop music at all, but Orishas are the exception. Buy this CD, it worth every penny, you won't be disappointed!
EXCELLENT CD.......2006-03-04
THIS IS MY 1ST REVIEW OF ANYTHING EVER AND I'M TELLING YOU THIS CD IS EXCELLENT AND IS WORTH EVERY PENNY. I LIKE THE WAY THEY FUSED TOGETHER THEIR CUBAN STYLE ALONG WITH HIP HOP BEATS AND I MUST SAY IT IS A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN.
THIS IS ONE OF THOSE CDS YOU JUST PUT IN YOUR CD PLAYER AND LET IT RUN FROM BEGINING TO END. A MASTERPIECE AND A MUST HAVE FOR ANY MUSIC FAN.

Since its 1999 breakthrough, the Cuban rap trio Orishas has been hailed as one of Latin hip-hop's true saviors. But the group's intoxicating third album, El Kilo, is about more than DJ scratches and looped samples. In fact, that's not at all what it's about. The group eschews studio tricks for live instrumentation on El Kilo, and it makes for a heady, well-rounded effort. El Kilo crackles with passion and urgency from beginning to end, and the album transforms Orishas into a wholly unclassifiable, strikingly original music machine. Blaring horns highlight album opener "Naci Orishas," and the pensive title track rides a simmering, soulful groove. Rappers Yotuel and Ruzzo play wonderfully off each other, and vocalist Roldan anchors every song with his playful vibe. A kitchen sink mix of soul, reggae, bossa nova and salsa inform Orishas' sound. There's even an appearance by Cuban rapper Pitbull on the raucous closing track, "Quien Te Dijo." The album's lyrical and musical poetry, however, belongs wholly to Cuba's three hip-hop heroes. --Joey Guerra

Really Cool Stuff.......2007-04-01
I think I like these guys mostly because they can sing. I'm not a big fan of hip-hop, since a lot of it sounds the same. I generally like Carlos Vives and Ojos de Brujo, but these guys are pretty impressive.
Softer hip-hop edge.......2007-02-06
On this their third release, Orishas seems to have found a nice common ground groove that is still street-smart but even more melodic and harmonious than their previous two releases. The title track "El Kilo" exemplifies this unity between hip-hop and sweet harmony vocals perfectly. The softer edge might not appeal to some who prefer the more angry-macho lyrics and vocal stylings of some Latin hip-hop artists but I think there is a nice balance to this disc that is more mass appealing. The toned downed rap offerings are not complete vanila ice cream by any means as is evident on tracks like " La Vacuna"(comes out as "Oblata" on the I-Pod reading of the track) and "Quien te Dijo" which features Pitbull. Most of the songs are more on the mellow side like the downtempo song "Reina de la Calle" or the sweet harmonies on "La Calle" that will have you jumping around getting into the rhythms. The Cuban beats give the music a good equalizing balance. The incorporation and integration of melodious vocals with modern dance grooves and Cuban beats results in the signature Orishas sound; part hip-hop and part Cuban rhythms that equals complete soulful harmony. This is one of those discs that sounds best turned up so your bass shakes and vibrates your booty through the sub-woofer. Orishas is on solid ground on this effort so if you liked their previous releases you probably will like this toned down disc. If you are new to them start here or on their first disc for a nice compare and contrast; both are good, Orishas has just matured like fine wine.
Magnifico.......2006-08-17
He sido fiel seguidora del trabajo de Orishas. Este es definitivamente mi album favorito ... distinto!
Sensacional!!!!.......2006-02-14
This album makes my heart shake!!! I can feel it in my blood! I have always been a fan of Orishas (since A lo Cubano), and so far I consider this album a huge growth of the trio, The combination of Hip-Hop and Cuban, old time Cuban, latin flavor and modern sounds is sensational. There is nothing better that music that can be felt in the stomach, in the soul... The kind of music you can turn on as loud as you can and still sounds perfect! Love the voice colors, and the lyrics, that are indeed very sentimental when it comes to understanding just a tiny bit of the Cuban situation, their lifestyle, their swing and the Cuban Groove. This is a wonderful tribute to their culture because it has added on to it in a very positive modern way.
I don't really care what savvy musicians can say, with the little knowledge I have, I feel that the harmony is beautiful and powerful, Is amzing how even some songs are a bit on the sad side, they still make you happy and make you look forward to the next... as one of the songs says, Always looking forward to their next step.
Knock-out effort.......2005-12-24
These guys defy easy categorization. Yeah, they're hip-hop, but they're also fluid and the harmonies and instrumentation are gorgeous. And their political chops are definitely on target. They remind me of a more sophisticated Ozomatli, which aint a bad thing! Just goes to show...the French can gripe all they want about immigrants, but if musicians like Orishas weren't residing in Paris, the French would still be stuck with the worst music on the planet! I love every song on this CD, and I don't say that very often. Give it a try!

Next to the Buena Vista Social Club, France-based Cuban rappers Ruzzo, Yotuel, Flaco-Pro, and Roldan--a.k.a. the Orishas--were quite recently the hottest musical export from that forbidden island to hit these shores in years. Now, riding on the heels of their international debut A lo Cubano, Emigrant continues the group's soulful syncretism of African-American rap and Afro-Cuban percussion and musical genres. The combo, which is now a trio, adds its patented conga-coded syncopations to the bling-bling hip-hop beats, especially on the synth-trenched "Que Pasa?" (What's Happenin'?) the horn-driven "Ninos" (Children), and "Habana" (Havana). Make no mistake, this CD can bounce alongside any tracks performed by stateside Latino superstars, from Fat Joe to Big Pun. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

asere, que bola?.......2005-03-17
orishas comes back with another amazing record!! this cd had me completely hooked!! as if "a lo cubano" wasn't amazing enough, the guys from orishas come back with a bang. even without flaco-pro, who had some serious skills. he left the group about 4 shows into a tour because his brother got in with some bad people in miami. he was killed, and flaco-pro turned to booze. but be on the look out for flaco, because word is he's still writing and collaborating and recording...
anyway, i can't wait til "el kilo," their third cd drops march 29th. i saw a video online of "naci orishas" (the first single) online and it's incredible!!
Good, but not as good as their first album.......2005-01-11
First of all, I am a huge rap and hip hop fan. I own albums from just about every rapper out there. Orishas first album "A lo Cubano" is one of my favorite rap albums of all time. "Emigrante" is a good encore for them but they clearly miss Flaco-Pro who in my opinion was by far their best flower and rhyme spitter. Apparently he had a falling out with the rest of them. He is the reason that their first album was so good. Without him, it seems that they got away from rap and went into more hip hop which is fine. Emigrante is good, but Orishas badly misses Flaco-Pro.
3rd Release By Orishas!.......2004-08-06
Orishas's 3rd work's release date is not official yet but will must likely come out around September 20th.... so be on the look out!
Their new work promises to be another classic just like "A Lo Cubano"....and they are also coming to USA on tour later this year....!
They Simply Rock!
More than worth!.......2004-05-28
Dear Hip Hop Lovers.... I present to you "Orishas", your first and last stop in latin hip hop, they are simply taking the world by storm, just when you thought hip hop's best work could only be heard in English...we were simply wrong... by combining traditional cuban music with hip hop they are able to create a never heard before fresh hip hop sound that speaks for itself!
This... their second album, has proven once more their abilities to simply be the very best at what they do...and that's the truth...
All songs are great, but specially "Que Pasa"; "Guajiro"; "Asi Fue"; "Niños"; "300 Kilos"; "Testimonio" & "La Vida Pasa"... The album contains Spanish & French lyrics, but don't worry because I'm sure their flow will make you nod your head without understanding a word of it, that's a promise... as a result both of their albums are part of my most frequent played-permanent collection!
Their 3rd album is being released sometime next month!...
For both cd's I thank Orishas, Thank you Orishas!
Keep up the good work!
A Lover!...

Brouwer Vol III.......2005-07-30
Graham Anthony Devine is certainly one of the finest guitarists to come out of England in recent years. Some have said he is a "modern-day Julian Bream for the next generation"; perhaps an overstatement, but still a good measure of his growing reputation.
The music on this CD is relatively unfamiliar. My own favorites would have to be the Suite #2, Hika, and Una Dia en Noviembre. These are all works which I have listened to several times over. The rest of the CD is quite good as well, not a stinkbug in the bunch, and well worth the low Naxos price.
solid music for Brouwer fans.......2005-01-11
As with all Naxos CDs if you happen to find music on it you don't care for you at least didn't lose a lot of money in the purchase and all the music on here is pretty decent. Personally I greatly prefer Shin-ichi Fukuda's performance of Hika but that CD seems hard to get. If you've already got the other Naxos CDs with Brouwer's music you should get this one. Devine's musicianship is good and the pieces are generally worth checking out, particularly Hika if you can't get Fukuda's recording, one of Brouwer's best works for solo guitar.

Cuban Landscapes for the Guitar.......2004-01-14
Manuel Barrueco is without a doubt one of the top 3 classical guitar players in the world. (I have been to several performances by the man and outside of fellow guitarist David Russell who would make the top 3, many times I have felt that Barrueco is #1 for our times) On this album, one can find many different sides to Cuban art music, most of them neglected for so long. Highlights of this great album are Ernesto Lecuona's
"Danza Lucumi", a beautiful prelude by Leo Brouwer, a most mesmerizing and memorable rumba-based composition in Enrique Ubieta's "New York Rush"; Leo Brouwer's "Rito de los Orishas" will send shivers down your spine in its first section and in the section one will find many beautiful Afro-Cuban melodies and rhythms. Like most of Brouwer's music and with all good music in fact, one must listen to it with complete focus and attention or else one will miss the boat completely. An elegant and powerful album from possibly the best classical guitarist of our times. 5 stars
boring!.......2002-03-19
this is the dullest recording i have ever heard--not to mention boring.
New and Interesting.......2000-06-30
This delightful album is a wonderful introduction to a body of overlooked compositions and composers. These works are engaging, melodic, and atmospheric. The recording again demonstrates why Barueco is the most interesting classical guitarist performing today. He consistently animates works to a level seldom achieved. Anyone weary of the usual classical guitar repertoire is well advised to seek out this recording.
Pleasant ambient listening.......1999-06-11
None of the music here seems to come out of Cuba as a necessity, if you catch my meaning. Any Latin American composer could have turned out most of what is on this disc. On the other hand, the fact that all the composers are Cuban is reason enough, I suppose, to justify the title of this CD. Yet all this is beside the point. It is the music that should concern us. While none of it is strikingly original or even tuneful, there are moments of beauty, now brooding, now not quite as melancholy. But I cannot see myself wanting to give any of it close second hearings; although I will play it as ambient music and as a contrast to the more "popular" Giuliani, De Falla, Sor, et alia that usually are represented on collections such as this.
Excellent.......1999-06-09
At last a maestro of the guitar releases a music CD expressing the other side of Cuban music that we seldom see. He brings to light the wonderfully expressive music of otherwise little heard contemporary composers. We constantly hear "salsa" and jazz influences in Cuban music, but seldom the serious, more elaborate side that also exists. This CD bridges that gap and gives a feel for the other side.

Album Description
Music is one way Cuban Lucumí (descendants of African slaves) have retained cultural ties to Africa. During the 19th century these descendants established cabildos, mutual aid and social societies based on African ethnic "nations" under the sponsorship of the Roman Catholic Church. These cabildos, found mainly in urban areas, were officially disbanded in the early 1900s but many continued on, providing an outlet for a Cuban Yoruba religion, combining Catholic and African-based religious elements. The Yoruba pantheon of gods called orishas provided the basis for these religious cults known as Santeria (also called Lucumí) and the drum ensembles that traditionally accompanied religious rituals in West Africa were modified into the Cuban batá drum trios heard in these recordings. A vivid treasure from the past.......2006-03-11
Great collection of African religious music performed live in Havana by actual descendents of the Yoruba slaves brought to Cuba. These recordings capture a unique instance in time of a great culture. A must for any studious and admirer of black traditions in the New World.
Totally Authentic.......2005-08-11
This recording is totally and beautifully authentic. With thirty
seven tracks, it's also quite a lot. The primary limitation is
the recording technology of 1957. Although it is not as tinny
sounding as most of the field recordings from around that time,
it does not, for example, come anywhere near expressing in sound fidelity, the beautiful melodies and harmonies that actually
come out of the bata drums. The many nuances and especially the
sweet bell tones typical of the bata ensemble don't quite come through, principally because of the limitations of the recording technology. Also, song number five is listed in your sampler as
for Obatala/Odudua; actually the sample is for Nana Buruku--Mother of Blessings and Curses. Nonetheless, this is a wonderful little treasure, especially for anyone who knows or wants to know about the Yoruba and other West aAfrican roots of Cuban, and actually of all African-American, music. For me it is a collector's item.
By the way, referring to some of the descriptions of the songs
that accompany the recording: Lucumi is an old dialect of the
West African Yoruba language which carried to Cuba due to slavery, and in Yoruba it means "my friend". So this is the music of 'My Friend' societies. The music and rituals presented on this recording are pure Old World West African, without needing any reference whatsoever to European Catholicism. Ironically though, this same Catholicsm actually originated in the same religious practices of North Africa which migrated into West Africa and developed into the Yoruba Mysteries which the enslaved Africans then carried into the Americas. This is one reason why Spanish and Portuguese music and religious culture
blend in such a savory way with West African culture in the Caribbean and Latin America. Modupue (Yoruba: I thank you!)

The Roots of Voodoo and Santeria.......2002-01-08
Another excellent CD from Mickey Hart's "The World" series, this one focuses in upon the Afro-Latin musical and religious traditions. Back in the height of the slave trade, a number of Africans of the Yoruba and Dahomey nations were transported across the Atlantic, where they continued to practice their religious traditions, giving rise to Voodoo, Candomble, Santeria, Obeah, Shango, Hoodoo and countles other religious traditions. This CD, filled with excellent historical recordings, explores the strong relation between the Afro-Latin religions and their musical traditions. Whats more, these same African-based rhythms would eventually give rise to various other forms of music, suc as Salsa, Rumba, Reggae, Rap, Jazz, the Blues, Rock 'n Roll, Gospel and countless others. Naturally, a complete survey of the region would never be able to fit onto a single CD, so this CD instead focuses upon Cuban Santeria, Brazilian Candomble, Haitian Voodoo and Shango of Trinidad. Its fascinating to see how these religions, themselves a meld of African, Native American and European influences, served to bridge cultural and musical gaps between groups. There are a number of invocations to various Orishas and Loas on this CD. I found it very appropriate that the CD started out with an invocation to Legba, the opener of the doorways in Voodoo, who is always invoked before any ceremony. In a way, this CD is a ceremony in and of itself, a spiritua journey through the Afro-Latin world. People unfamilar with these religions may also be interested in hearing the Ketu songs of Candomble, or the Itutu funeral song of Santeria. The one thing, however, I must say is that you must remember this music is sacred music, carrying a deep religious meaning with it. Please remember that when listenin to this music, and give it the respect it deserves.
New technology preserves oral traditions..........1999-01-04
Listening to a record for its historical impact is a whole lot different than listening for entertainment. The Yoruba/Dahomean Collection of music is a joint effort of The Library of Congress' Endangered Music Project and Mickey Hart, renown Deadhead and World Music historian. This edition focuses on music that was transported from West Africa during slavery and took roots in Haiti, Brazil, Cuba and Trinidad. At the time of these recordings (the 1940s), historians noted the similarities in rhythms, subject matter, and melodies. Placed side by side for the first time, it's amazing to see how they all weave together despite developing in different areas. The liner notes are meticulous in describing their origin and how each field recording was done. This religious music & movement evolved into Santeria here in the states, so it's even more intriguing to hear the roots of that culture. This historic document needs to be praised if only to insure that oral traditions like these that have lasted for hundreds of years don't vanish in a blink of an eye with the technology wave engulfing us into the 21st century.
