It's finally happened. After years of puzzling popularity by way of derivative rock retreads, Mana has finally made the leap to full-bodied musical force on its first album in four years, Amar Es Combatir. The disc is a thoughtful, tender and often terrific collection of pop wizardry. It's buoyed by solid production work, a cohesive sound and singer Fher Olvera's commanding vocal presence. Mana has always drawn inspiration from the arena-rock vibes of everyone from U2 to Journey, but this time, the group takes those blueprints and creates its own urgent framework. It's a thrilling, insanely catchy collection. Everything on the disc crackles with energy, from winsome opener "Manda Un Senal" to swaggering closing track "Relax." In between, the Mexico-based outfit weaves memorable stories of love that are marked by pulsing percussion, driving guitar riffs and emotive vocals. First-rate stuff from a group who finally--at least to these ears--justifies all the fuss. --Joey Guerra

Album Description

Amar es Combatir, Mana's 9th studio album and first in four years, was produced by Mana with the special collaboration of recording engineer Tom Russo (Audioslave, Macy Gray, Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton). Also includes a duet with JLGuerra.

2 out of 5 stars garbage.......2007-06-19

After a while it all sounds the same.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST Latino Rock Band in the world.......2007-04-04

When it comes to asking people about Pop Latino music; it is almost common that almost everyone you ask will say Mana is among thier favorites. This is probably hard to believe that I have only been a Mana fan or the other word they use for fans like me "Manatico" since 2004. I had a huge interest in the group when I Bought my first album from them called "Unplugged". Thier soothing sounds of a live concern scene had me wanting more. When I bought the next album Cuando Los Angeles Lloran I was hooked. I really enjoy listening to Fher Olvera, the main singer in the group. His musical talents are often compared to the main singer in Sting or Bono from U2. It's really amazing how the group we know as Mana know now almost failed to exist at one point of thier career. I listen to these guys often and recommend anyone to listen to thier music, you don't have to speak Spanish but you can still enjoy the sound of Fher's voice, as well as the drumbeats performed by Sergio Vallin Rodriguez. Here are a couple reviews of thier albums from thier careers (may not have all of them)

Falta Amor 1990- Great first album under the name Mana. for those of you who don't that they used to be called Sombrero Verde and were also part of the movement called "Rock en tu Idioma" This album has more of an Adult Contemporary sound to it, kinda like a Soft Rock en Espanol type sound. My favorite song in this album is "Rayando El Sol" Mana's first big hit.

Donde Jugaran Los Ninos 1992- Another great masterpiece of work, still has the Soft Rock en espanol sound. Great hits include: Oye Mi Amor, Vivir Sin Aire, and Como Diablos, as well as the beginning up beat hit: De Pies a Cabeza. This album you can say put the group on the map on heading to being one of the best Latino rock band in the world

Cuando Los Angeles LLoran 1995- This is when they kinda leave the Soft Rock en espanol sound and head towards the rock en espanol sound. You can tell of the musical differences by listening to thier sound, Selva Negra, as well thier balads. Thier balads aim towards the edge of rock. I don't have a favorite song from this album but I do consider it as one of my favorites.

Suenos Liquidos 1997- En el Muelle de San Blas is another favorite song from Mana.

MTV Unplugged 1999- Another favorite of mine, has the all songs in a concert setting on CD. You can listen to this album while relaxing or if your up and around.

Revolucion de Amor 2002- Includes the hit Mariposa Tracioniera. Love that song!

Amar es Combatir 2006- My favorite song is Labios Compartidos, still love thier music even though they went a little stronger

I don't speak spanish but I enjoy the music. All the songs are good if you like rock, upbeat, romantic music...I made 3 copies, one for home, car and work. Oh! I even have it on my Ipod for when I exercise. You just can't get enough of it. This is the best album ever!!!

5 out of 5 stars sexy spanish music.......2007-03-30

what an awesome album!.Manda me Senal is my most beloved song and I have dedicated this song to my wife.I have recorded to my mind this song just when I first listened. So catchy and sexy tune.Bendita tu Luz is another apple-pie hit.All in all, I am grateful this contemporary Orpheuses. IMy Spanish fluency increases day by day thanks to the lyrics of their songs.

With 16 million total units in global sales (1999's MTV Unplugged has sold 3 million copies so far), four-time Grammy winners Maná are one of the biggest Latin rock bands around. Revolución de Amor, the four-piece band's first studio album in five years, continues Maná's ongoing dual interest in themes of love and social issues, and the band is masterful at packaging its potent messages in an accessible guitar-based sound. Hailing from Guadalajara, Mexico, Maná create an organic mix of classic rock, modern rock, and traditional Latin music that will appeal to fans of Santana and Rubén Blades (both of whom make guest appearances here). But the band is also able to attract younger audiences thanks to punkier songs such as "Nada Que Perder," which could very easily break through on K-rock radio stations across the U.S. One of Maná's best albums to date, Revolución de Amor is proof positive that Latin rock can be accessible to a broad range of people who don't speak Spanish. --Tad Hendrickson

2 out of 5 stars Más de lo mismo.......2005-10-27

5 out of 5 stars An advance beyond their past.......2005-08-19

I realize that I'm operating at a disadvantage in reviewing this CD. I don't speak Spanish (although I took it in high school and college) and I haven't followed Maná throughout their career. I'm just an late-arriving Americano who appreciates good music whatever its country of origin.

Nevertheless, I was blown away by this CD's sound: its harmony, arrangement, and emotion. In fact, I was blown away enough to order the 3-CD set of their earlier CDs on Warner, based on Amazon reviewers' raves about their earlier work. I can appreciate where those reviewers were coming from, but I still like "Revolucion de Amor" the best.

For my money, the earlier Maná was a worthy band in the Police vein, but a bit minimalist. This CD, where they arguably went corporate (or whatever), fleshes out their potential and really delivers.

Hey, even with English-language bands, I usually place the lyrics in the background and concentrate on the overall sound. On that count, this CD delivers as much as, say, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers or the Sisters of Mercy or Procol Harum or Phil Spector's girl groups. Solid harmonies, good musicianship, great balance.

That may just be succumbing to the allures of pop production, but good pop is all too rare, ironically enough.

I hope that the band is working on another CD, three years on, and look forward to what they come up with.

5 out of 5 stars mariposa traicionera.......2005-08-07

Just want to say that I don't know much Spanish, but I do tune into Spanish radio stations cos' I love the sound. I think it was around 12/03 that I kept hearing Mariposa Traicionera on the radio. The name of the song was not announced or maybe it was but I just missed it. The song had this hold on me and I just had to find out who the singer was. Searched the internet with just the keyword "mariposa" and after much work, I finally discovered this Mana band. Have bought a few of their albums since, and am still going through the letras with my Spanish Dictionary! Other songs of the band I like are for example, Te llore un rio, Oye mi amor, Como te deseo,Te llevare al cielo, Eres mi religion. Well, I could go on and on...

With magnetic rhythms, cool grooves, and catchy hooks, the Mexican rock band Maná have conquered fans on both sides of the border. From the wickedly cool opener "Hechicera" to the pulsating "Un Lobo por Tu Amor," the tunes are easy to get into, regardless of whether you know Spanish or not. There's plenty of fun, too, on the rollicking "Tu Tienes Lo Que Quiero" and the zany "Clavado en un Bar," which became the tour anthem during the band's 1998 tour. Also bewitching are the romantic "En el Muelle de San Blas" and the achy love ode "Como Dueles en los Labios." The band is also daring, remembering political prisoners around the world on "Me Voy a Convertir en un Ave." --Ramiro Burr

2 out of 5 stars fome.......2006-03-14

5 out of 5 stars This Album Is For Everyone.......2004-09-12

It's been almost seven years since Maná released this album, but I still think it's a great album. This band, in my opinion, has been the most successful Spanish rock band. They have tons of hits and every single one of their albums is a monster album with many hits. Maná also talk about many different kinds of things in their songs.

From this album, we get hits like "Hechicera" and "Clavado En Un Bar", but probably the classic song in this album is "En El Muelle De San Blas", which is a very touching sad song. I honestly cannot say that I have a favorite song from this album because every single song is special in its own way. "Chaman", for example, has a very nice message in the chorus: "jamas dejes de amar...el amor es todo", which means "never stop loving...love is everything." "Como Dueles En Los Labios" is another touching slow song in this album with great lyrics. "Me Voy A Convertir En Un Ave" is a very sad song that talks about a man that is unjustly in jail for a crime that he did not commit. "Un Lobo Por Tu Amor", "Tu Tienes Lo Que Quiero", and "Robame El Alma" have a more uptempo sound.

All in all, this is a great album. Basically all the songs are great. I don't have to say this because there is no bad song from Maná that I know of. Anyway, this album is for everyone. Maná is for everyone. They have songs and messages for everyone. This is totally a band that will remain as a very important one in the history of Spanish rock.

5 out of 5 stars comfy cd.......2004-06-08

This is my rainy day cd that I always play when I'm down, its raining, or I can't figure out what else to listen to. I love all the songs, especially "Muelle de San Blas". That song holds a special sound that has so much feeling. It feels like sweet sorrow, you don't even have to understand Spanish to feel this. It is a great cd with lots of emotional value.

Maná may be at the forefront of the ever-burgeoning Rock en Español movement, but the Mexican band employs a variety of styles to perfect its pleasing pop sound. Nowhere is that more evident than on MTV Unplugged, the quartet's shimmering live collection of some of its biggest hits. Airy balladry, simmering tropical grooves, and '80s-inspired choruses all figure in the mix, making for an effortless and intimate evening of music. The live setting punches up Maná's arrangements on tracks such as "No Ha Parado de Llover," "Ana," and "Vivir Sin Aire." The confident vocal swagger and pleading delivery of lead singer Fher, particularly on "Perdido en un Barco" and "Oye Mi Amor," brings to mind icons such as Sting and U2's Bono. Fher is a rock superstar waiting to be embraced by the world. --Joey Guerra

5 out of 5 stars Old School Mana.......2007-06-27

I am a huge fan of mana and after going to their concert recently, I decided to buy one of their older albums. It is a great album, especially "vivir sin aire". It also addresses issues that are current such as global warming.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD. YOU'LL LOVE IT.......2007-02-25

IF YOU LOVE MANA TODAY YOU WILL LOVE THIS CLASSICS FROM THE 90'S. THIS IS THE ESSENCE OF MANA, THE BEGINNING OF THEIR CAREER AND IF YOU WERE FROM THAT ERA IT WILL BROUGHT A LOT OF MEMORIES TO YOU. GREAT MUSIC!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-06-26

This album is probably Mana's finest work. This is basically the last album they did before they went overly pop-oriented. The album art is simple, just the band with their instruments. While other albums try to catch your eye with flashy cover art, this album may go unnoticed. However, there isn't a bad song on this disc, and it is worth every penny. The songs range from love songs, to songs about difficult life circumstances, and all the songs are sung with incredible raw emotion. The music is great, and it goes with the lyrics and voice perfectly.
This is the album that shows everything Mana is capable of. Incredible!

5 out of 5 stars Some good listening.......2005-05-27

I started listening to Mana about 4 years ago. The first song that I heard from them was "como dueles en los labios". After findnig out who the band was, I searched for that song and ran into "Donde Jugaran Los Ninos." The album was excellent and I have bought every album since. I have not tired of any of their songs. I highly recommend this and any of their albums. As for the person who posted from Peru, I think it's a little unfair to call their music garbage(basura). If you know about Mana, then you know Peru was big in Mana's rise. Thanks for that. Aside from that, what band has come out of Peru that has been a hit in the U.S.? As for the music being just for (gringos), I'm a chicano and most of the people I know that listen to them are Mexican, or chicano. It's nice to know there are American's that do listen to it. Good for our white friends for expanding their taste in music. Unfortunately our friend from Peru is shallow.

5 out of 5 stars a political statement.......2005-05-22

I admire Maná for having put moving and meaningful lyrics to such attractive accompaniment. Maná is my favorite band of all time, and I have spent the past 5 years with this CD and others of Maná, listening to them nearly once per week since I bought them in September, 2000.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Intro to Mana.......2005-07-12

This covers much of the same ground as Mana's greatest album, 'Unplugged ', but adds a few more gems that make it a good introduction to the band and a valuable part of any Mana collection. Highlights you won't find on "Unplugged" include Fehr's piercingly sweet vocal on "Te LLore un Rio," his nod toward Bob Marley on the sexy "Te Deseo," and the classic "Te Llevare al Cielo." More great pop composing, performance, alma, corazon and clean lines of beautiful Spanish on this disc than on a dozen ordinary greatest hits records.

5 out of 5 stars One Song Rating.......2004-10-15

This rating is for Te Llevare Al Cielo only. Like one of the other Raters said I would of myself for Mana to come out with another studio cd. I think its time. But Instead they came out with 3 greatst his cds with the brand new song Te Llevare Al Cielo and I would like to get one of these greatest hits for that song because I love it. I have spanish music video and I have seen the video and I heard it like once on the radio where I live in Flordia. we have 2 spanish radio stations on FM radio down here. I choose to get Eclipse and I want this cd just for that song because I own 2 cds all ready and I want to get all the rest. On to the rating.

The Rating:
I think Te Llevare is the best songs that Mana has done so far untill i bye all the other cds I am missing. I love the kick of the electric guitars. {Oh I love Electric Guitar}. After I learn to play my acoustic I am getting one of them nice litte Electric guitars. But anyway on Te Llevare al Cielo the group plays and sings in well tune. Its a great song. Thanks.

Signing off
Gabe.

5 out of 5 stars An Eclipse Of Hits.......2004-02-24

Even though I would have rather Maná to come back with another studio album, they came up with three albums including their greatest hits. "Sol" includes the band's "dancing" hits, "Luna" includes the band's more romantic hits, and "Eclipse" includes a combination of both types. This CD includes 13 of the band's past hits and 1 new single "Te Llevare Al Cielo". It also includes the video for "Eres Mi Religion", which was the second single of their album "Revolucion De Amor". One thing that I liked about the booklet in this album is that it gives a backround on some of the songs. This album would have been better if they would have added at least one more song.

All in all, this is a very good albums for Maná fans or people who don't have their past albums. I recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars This Review is For One Song.......2004-02-10

I am wrighting this review for Te Llevare Al Cielo ( I'll Take You To Heaven }. That Song is very nice. I have heard it on the raido and I have heard it and seen the video on my cable box. You have to pay but thats fine. Its cool that I get to watch videos like Te Levare Al Cielo. I have been A Mana fan since Christmas of 2002 not since the begining. And I do not speak alot of spanish but I do understand it. This song is one of their best songs that they have done. I want to get one of these greatest hits just for this song because its a new song that that have done and I want to get all the other cds That they have. I have Revolucion De Amor and Suenos Liqudos. I will have repeat songs but I think its more then worth it to get one of these greatest hits for Te Llevare Al Cielo even if I will have the same songs twice. I am going to get one that have the song as the first one. Thanks. Peace.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2004-01-16

These collections of CDs are a piece of crap. Why make 3 cds of the greatests hits if they don't even have that many studio albums? The simple answer is money. They've lost the talent to make another studio album so they just live off their past glory. They put a nice cover a recycled songs and "enhance" the cd. So stupid unknowing fans will go out and buy it. If you already have their past albums no need to buy this garbage. If you have bought it you're out of luck. A blank CD is worth more than this crap.

Prior to a lot of travel and his eventual settling in England, Ayub Ogada was a member of the Luo tribe from a wedge of northern Kenya pinched between Uganda and Tanzania. Ogada's music is based on repetitious patterns plucked on the nyatiti, a stringed instrument reminiscent of the lyre. On En Mana Kuoyo (meaning "just sand"), he sings mellifluous, almost hypnotic, and yet ultimately lackadaisical melodies concerning home, his instrument, the weather, and injustice. By way of attempting a subtle fusion of African and European (not to mention urban and rural) styles, Ogada is accompanied by a small ensemble that adds surprisingly little to almost too-pretty songs more alike than not. --Richard Gehr

5 out of 5 stars a faraway place.......2006-12-02

This music takes me to a faraway place, if only in my mind. Great for some perspective while doing mundane errands in the car. Peaceful, haunting, beautiful. The editorial review is terse and, in my opinion, dead wrong.

5 out of 5 stars What beautiful music!.......2006-10-20

I can listen to this CD over and over and get lost in the haunting melodies. Thank goodness I wasn't put off by Richard Gehr's editorial review. The customer reviews are far more reflective of what you will find here.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful ethnic sound.......2006-08-30

The music on this cd was so authentic and real. The sounds made you feel like your were in Africa, set you in a real peaceful yet hollow mood. I loved it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Soothing, haunting and soulful sounds of Africa.......2006-03-13

I fell in love with Ayub Ogada's music after hearing his haunting "Kothbiro" -- effectively the theme song of the film "The Constant Gardener."

I bought the disk for my wife who has played it over and over. She loves the simple, beautiful rhythms, Ogada's liltingly sensual voice and the sense-pictures his music provides of the unforgettable African countryside and people.

5 out of 5 stars lovely.......2006-02-28

It's exactly the sound that I was looking for! Real Africa, not just drums and noise. You can fly with your mind.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-03-30

I picked this CD up while stationed in Panama City, Panama in 1996. I've been listening to this band for 10 years and I still love them. This CD is like their "SGT Pepper's", when the Beatles went through their metamorphosis from a pop type band to a serious rock and roll band. Just like with the Beatles, their older stuff and newer stuff are great. I'm not comparing them to the Beatles, but this shows that the band wasn't afraid to deviate from what made them popular. There are some really amazing tracks on here like "No ha parado de llover" and "siempre el amor" I've seen this band live in Bogota, Colombia and Hato Rey, Puerto Rico. Superb live band, and I cannot believe that with the huge influx of latin music over the last 6-8 years like Shakira, Ricky Martin and Paulina Rubio, that these guys haven't taken off in the States. They even did a cover of Led Zeppelin's Fool in the Rain that is awesome, and is on the International version of "Encomium: a tribute to Led Zeppelin" Definately give this band a try, and don't let the language Barrier get in the way. Also, pick up Mana en vivo, great live concert and superb sound, although this was recorded before "Cuando los angeles lloran"

Mana is one of the Best! Never ending talent! No matter what mood you are in - you can listen to Mana!

5 out of 5 stars Maná at its best.......2005-05-22

I admire Maná for having put moving and meaningful lyrics to such attractive accompaniment. Maná is my favorite band of all time, and I have spent the past 5 years with this CD and others of Maná, listening to them nearly once per week since I bought them in September, 2000.

5 out of 5 stars love Mana!.......2004-02-20

I first encountered Mana when I went to Peru this past summer and loved it! When I came back to the States I was excited to see that my local bookstore carried Mana. I bought this cd and their Sol cd and I love them both! We use and listen to Mana in my Spanish class all the time. The are an international band that you dont have to know the language to enjoy their music.

4 out of 5 stars Can't understand a word, but I love it.......2004-02-18

Somehow, someway this CD ended up in my collection. Honestly, I have no idea how this CD came to me. Just before I made it a coaster or a mini-frisbee I decided to put it in the player... Wow, MANA blew me away! This esquisitly made album is truly wonderful. The title cut Cuando Los Angeles Lloran is a marvelous song. In fact, nearly every one of these songs gets me humming along. Since don't know a word of Spanish I let the melody and the fine performances carry me along. MANA has a fan in the Great White North (Minnesota). Please don't let a language barrier disuade you from giving this great band a listen.

5 out of 5 stars A good starting place.......2007-03-29

I'm a gringo and don't speak Spanish very well, but thanks to the Amores Perros soundtrack I've become a big Rock en Espanol fan. Mana is one of the bands that kept popping up in my searches, so I gave Sueños Liquidos a shot and since then I've collected all of their albums.

This disc is a good retrospective of their catalog with a track or two off of each album through Revolución de Amor and it focuses on my personal favorites: the upbeat dancable songs. They have a poppy, rock style and are often compared to U2. I find their music more joyous, but maybe it is just that I don't follow the lyrics too well.

That said...these discs are kind of expensive. Sueños Liquidos and Revolución de Amor are both chock full of great songs and you can pick up their older albums pretty cheap, so maybe the best thing to do is what I did: get Sueños and then work your way through their whole catalog.

Another option would be to pick up the Mana Unplugged album which also has a good selection, but while I enjoy it, I generally prefer the album versions.

Also, check out the Amores Perros soundtrack Amores Perros (2000 Film). It introduced me to Cafe Tacuba, Ely Guerra, Control Machete and a dozen other great artists.

3 out of 5 stars Awesome--Te llevare al cielo.......2004-02-28

I have been searching far and wide for this song. I heard it first on the local Spanish radio stations and I hummed the beat to a friend and she gave me the name. I love this song. It inspires love in all that hear it. It truly requires genuine musical talent to come up with grooving beats and I think Mana has outdone themselves.

4 out of 5 stars open your house to music from a distance.......2004-01-22

On New Year's Eve we flew to Mexico City. A week later we were having breakfast in Oaxaca and this album was being played in the restaurant. At first I thought "sting" was being dubbed in spanish. But then the next cut would have this wonderful latin style and rhythm? We asked the waitress,"who were we listening to?", she smiled..... "mana"! Later in the day we bought the cd in a marketplace.

Now back in Oklahoma, yet barely speaking a word of spanish,my husband and I love this albumn. The beat and rhythm.....
irresistable. Happy, upbeat music that takes me back to the other Americas.
