Colombian music is incredibly diverse. Cuban son, Latin salsa, and merengue collude with African chants and percussion, primal Indian sources, flamenco and Moorish echoes from Spain, native cumbia, and out-of-control German brass bands. All of these influences and sounds are heard, separately and together, on Carmelina. Toto La Momposina hails from the north of the country, where the Madalena river flows toward the Caribbean, and she is as much a musical hunter-gatherer as a singer of formidable beauty and strength. In every song she becomes a different woman--a flirt, an Earth Mother, or a humble food-seller--and her voice is at once as fresh as a girl's and as ancient as the 500-year-old tradition she personifies. The instruments used on this album are uniformly intriguing, but the gaita, a long-neglected Indian wooden or bamboo flute named for a Spanish bagpipe, is particularly fascinating. --Christina Roden

This rocks! The lyrics get pretty heavy at times (if you understand Spanish) avoid it if you're not comfortable with brujeria!

5 out of 5 stars Cool Columbian music, off the beaten track.......2002-11-26

A stunning set from this Columbian diva... This veers sharply away from the standard-issue hyperactive cumbias that dominate most Columbian releases, with an electric mix of Cuban-style sones and guarachas, African percussion and indigenous South American folk styles. Okay, so I admit my description may sound a bit academic on paper, but that's why you owe it to yourself to pick this album up and see if you think it sounds as groovy as I do. La Momposina is an arresting vocalist, and these tunes are delivered with a solid, swinging beat. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Sensational.......2000-09-16

I read a newspaper review on Toto La Momposina's last concert here in Miami, which motivated me to buy the CD. I am happy I did, it is a beautifully rythmic album. The traditional Afro-Colombian Cumbia music is presented here in all it's primitive glory. I especially loved "Las Cuatro Palomas", "Millo Son", and the last track "Hacha Machete y Garabato". Close your eyes and imagine yourself swaying back and forth in traditional Cumbia style listening to this carribean delight.

5 out of 5 stars truly great choice.......2007-02-06

I am a great fan of cuban and colombian music, and was really surprised when I finally listened to Toto la Momposina.
Toto started her career very early singing colombian folk music, some of which is presented here in its original form, as a good example, the first track, "Dos de febrero" is an unadultered cumbia in its pre-comercial form, only drums and a capella voice, "El pescador", which became quite a popular song, is presented here in what I think is the original and the best interpretation, also as traditional cumbia.

Toto then enriched her style by making a research stage in Cuba, and integrating the structure and instruments of traditional cuban folk music into her own, great examples are "La sombra negra" and "Malanga", which follow the cuban son structure and are enriched by guitar and the "marimbola", a bass metal harp-like instrument which gives a deep impact. These two songs are really great.
The songs "Adios Fulana", and "dame la mano juancho" use the reed flutes called "gaitas", another typical component of the colombian folk style.

The last track, "la acabación" is a peculiar gift; the main drummer from Toto's group was trained in a sacred rithm used only during funerals, and taught only to very selected and skilled drummers. Here we can listen to it.

as interesting trivia, Toto la Momposina was invited by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, when he received the nobel price in literature, to play her music in stockholm, at the award ceremony.

5 out of 5 stars La candela viva.......2003-04-25

Toto la Momposina brings out the real and pure folklore of the north coast of Atlantic & Magdalena Region.
The african influence in the different types of drums will make you travel to remote regions where the night, candles, machete make you move their rithms echoes.
I truly enjoy the creativity of bringing the drums resonances in different stages and clearly differenciate it.
The poetry of the songs words are the small village people tails seating around the campfire enjoying each others companion and adventures of the day or a distant leyend.

5 out of 5 stars MAGIC.......1999-12-05

When the africans beated their drums and the native indigenous tribes added some melodies with their gaitas, a new kind of music was born in the beautiful caribbean coast of Colombia. Strong, pure, deep, poetic, vibrant and magic. This music is done with 3 elements: voices, percussion and gaita (native flute). Toto la momposina is the best and most representative singer of this kind of music, her voice is unique and powerful, and I consider this her best recording. A jewel of real world music.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, foot-stomping festival music from Columbia.......1999-08-27

A mixture of Cuban, Spanish, and African influences swirl through "La Candela Viva." The female vocalist is vibrant and fiery.

The track "El Pescador" alone is worth the price of the disc.

The cumbia is Colombia's greatest musical export, and vocalist Totó la Momposina is its most accomplished ambassador. This CD abounds with indigenous gouache gourds and flutelike gaitas, Spanish guitars, and African tambor/bombo drums. With the addition of the Afro-derived marimbula thumb piano and Papa Noel's Congolese guitar fills, Momposina's music is a beautiful blend of old and new worlds. The tracks comprise cumbia classics and original compositions. The horn-driven "Reparala" swings with a Cuban flavor, while the midtempo "Acompanala" rings with heavenly harmonies from Momposina and her vocal chorus. "Chambacu" is an awesome ancestral voice/percussion tribute to a historic black quarter of Cartagena de Indias, and "Bozaa y Media (La Acabacion)" is an instrumental laced with Amerindian woodwinds. This passionately performed and beautifully recorded work will do for the cumbia what Astor Piazzolla's Tango: Zero Hour did for the tango. --Eugene Holley Jr.

4 out of 5 stars Colombian roots music.......2007-02-06

Colombian veteran female artist Toto La Momposina is like a musical ambassador of her roots music. The integration of Cuban son and rhythms, coupled with the African influences and solidified by her native Colombian coastal music results in a stunning Latin tempo disc that is like carnival music. This is a fun album with music that is uplifting and danceable; you better have your cumbia-salsa shoes on for this one. The use of horns gives the disc moments of Latin jazz intonations but her voice throughout carries the disc into the playful pachanga(party) mode. The songs are consistently around the five minute mark so there is plenty of room for musical improvisation and frisky interludes. The use of guitar helps establish the marriage between old and new world music. "Mile " (El hombre borracho) is a frolicksome song that employs the techniques mentioned with good results. Excellent songs include the buoyant "La Cumbia Esta Herida" that is heavy percussive with thumping horns throughout,"Oye Manita" that is heavily influenced and driven by Caribbean rhythms,"Asi Lo Grita Toto" is spiced with indigenous flutes and call and response vocals that recall ancient cultures before the Europeans and "Acompanala" that is a sweet song with African sensibilities. This is a good disc for your world music collection. If you like the music of Celia Cruz(she sounds a little like her) or Colombian music than you will probably like this disc. Get this CD for a musical journey that meets where the old world and new world merge.

    5 out of 5 stars Que buena!.......2006-03-15

This is an absolutely fantastic CD. I bought this album after purchasing "Carmelina" by Toto La Momposina. I don't know if I can relate it that much to cumbia, however, or at least the cumbia that people have come to define with the Klezmer-like brass, the gypsy-jazz sweeps of the clarinet and the booming bass drums. (If that is what you're looking for, I recommend "The Rough Guide to Cumbia"). But "Pacanto" is still a wonderful album that explores the roots of cumbia and its coastal origins, providing the listener with a rich collection of native Colombian rhythms and those of its own. Amazon.com did a good job here of selecting samples that really give you a taste of the CD's content.

5 out of 5 stars "Lindo que suena el tambor..." An outstanding disc.......2002-11-10

This is not just the best Latin-American disc of the year but is the best of any genre. The fusion of Latin rhythms and African instruments and African rhythms and Latin instruments will blow you away! There is great depth here. I have lent this disc to several friends and all have come back to me amazed at the quality as all went in with low expectations. "La cumbia esta herida" is outstanding, "La Ripla" is a rattling instrumental dominated by the great mix of the tambores and gaitas. "Acompanala" is a soft and beautiful number and the switch 4 minutes into the beguiling "Chambacu" is SURE to blow you away. Buy this disc and I assure you, you will not be disappointed.

          Product Description
