PLAYER HAD SOME GREAT MOMENTS IN THE 1970'S and 1980'S! .......2007-08-02
By the 1970's, Rock n' Roll was still young yet, matured and come of age. And with it, came one of the many 70's bands who would call themselves PLAYER. PLAYER will forever be remembered in Rock n' Roll history as being the two-hit wonder band that released two great hit songs in the 1970's. These two songs were "Baby Come back" and "This Time I'm In It For Love." PLAYER was formed in Los Angeles, California in 1977 comprising of lead singer/guitarist and frontman Peter Beckett (Formally of the U.K. group SKYBAND), bassist Ronn Moss, guitarist/keyboardist J.C. Crowley and drummer John Friesen. Upon being signed to the RSO label (Robert Stigwood Organization) in 1977, PLAYER would strike gold right away with the release of their first hit "Baby Come Back" in 1977. PLAYER would release five albums in their whole career between the years 1977 to 1996. "THE BEST OF PLAYER, BABY COME BACK" chronicles and highlights PLAYER'S hit songs from the 1977 to 1996 period. In my opinion, "THE BEST OF PLAYER, BABY COME BACK" is a true testament of four talented musicians that helped define the true spirit of the 70's sound era. This legendary compilation album is also a fine tribute to a band that was all but forgotten. "THE BEST OF PLAYER, BABY COME BACK" is the tales in the life and times of the PLAYER legend and saga. Their music is their story that speaks for itself.
"THE BEST OF PLAYER, BABY COME BACK" from 1998 begins with the forever PLAYER stamped trademark hit song "Baby Come Back," the beautiful and smooth romantic hit song "This Time I'm In It For Love," the amazing acoustic mild Rocker "Melanie," the bass pumping mellow Rocker "Prisoner Of Your Love," the beautifully slow harmonizing song turned Rocker "I've Been Thinking," the slow acoustic Rocker "Wait Until Tomorrow," the soothing mild Rocker "Givin' It All," the fast Rocker "Who Do You Think You Are?," the beautiful harmonizing slow song "It's For You," the slow synthesized mild Rocker "Bad News Travels Fast," the incredible 80's Rocker "If Looks Could Kill," the bass pumping 80's Rocker "Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid," the acoustic love song "It Only Hurts When I Breathe," the beautifully slow syntheisized and romantic love song "Beautiful Love" the beautiful love song with so much meaning, "Footprints In The Sand." I would like to commend PLAYER on some fine moments in their career. Lots of these songs bring back so many memories in my life during my youth. Well done guys.
If you love the sounds of the 1970's and 1980's, you will definitely love this music collection. PLAYER'S music defines the true spirit of what the beautiful soulful feeling of the 1970's and 1980's music really sounded like. It does take a few listens for it to grow on you but you will eventually grow fond of it. This is a great love collection to share a special evening with your loved one. I highly recommend this album if you truly love these era's. In my opinion, this legendary compilation album has definitely stood the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. You can do all of your album purchasing either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store.
In closing, J.C. Crowley would exit PLAYER very early in their career to enjoy a solo career as a Country artist. Both Ronn Moss and John Friesen would also depart from PLAYER in 1980. Peter Beckett, the lone remaining founding member, continued the group for one final album, 1982's "SPIES OF LIFE" before retiring the PLAYER name to mount a career as a songwriter and solo performer. Ron Moss would strike gold by joining the cast of the daytime soap opera THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL in 1987. In 1990, Peter Beckett joined THE LITTLE RIVER BAND, having already written three singles for the band, and toured with them for eight years. PLAYER would disband for a long while before reuniting in 1995. Both Ron Moss and Peter Beckett would be responsible for reforming PLAYER in 1995 with the release of their reunion album "LOST IN REALITY." I am still researching this band since I have no updated information at this time. When I do find additional information, I will update this review immediately. So here's to you Peter, Ronn, J.C. and John. Thanks for the memories and moments with hopefully many more still yet to come. Keep The Faith! And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that you will continue in reading all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. PLAYER RULES! Long Live rock n' Roll! Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

This CD is an excellent compilation of songs and covers all five albums. All of their albums have been released on CD (either here in the US or as imports). I recommend this set for anyone looking for an overview of the band.
NOTE: Check out my review of the Ron Moss solo album which is produced and arranged by Peter Beckett. I consider this another Player album.

In the short time since they grouped together a few years ago to form their sensationally successful trio, the Irish Tenors have already put out an impressive array of recordings and DVDs, including some bona fide gooseflesh-inducing live concert performances. So, if you still have the enviable pleasure of discovering these amazing vocalists--or want to turn a friend on to their musical charms--this compilation CD will do the trick nicely. It brings together such classics as "Danny Boy," "Toora Loora Looral," "Last Rose of Summer," and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" (featuring John McDermott)--all rendered with the kind of passionate, heartfelt, and harmonious crooning that is their signature style, whether they're singing as an ensemble or as highlighted soloists. And even if you have the complete Irish Tenors, this anthology includes several numbers not found on their previously released CDs. Hard to think of a sweeter treat for a fan of singing too good to ever go out of fashion. --Sarah ChinCustomer Reviews:

what's all the negative reviews about? eh?.......2006-01-31
check out "getaway" "nothin' precious at all" too excellent tracks that are up to the standards you would expect from the phonics...
the singles they chose to release from this album were good choices
madame helga" being the rockin' head twistin' stadium rocker
maybe tomorrow being the morning chorus dawn song that draws you in
"since i told you it was over" being the song for the lighters ablaze
this album starts with a ear grabbing song "help me[she's out of her mind]
and doesn't stop till the previous song and single i mentioned
the stereophonics surely buttered their bread with this album
and what i hear from their new album they went back too the "performances and cocktails" days of hard edged rock
the stereophonics are a fantastic band and their not just a band that does songs that go up to eleven..kelly jones can write beautiful melodies and witful words that makes you think of a summers afternoon with a glass of wine in your hand relaxing
PEEEEERFECT
I bought this album because I liked "Maybe Tommorow".......2006-01-16
I very much enjoyed the whole "garage" feel to this album, and it's mellow energy... if that makes any sense. I think this album is best if you are relaxing and just looking for good entertaining music. I would buy another Stereophonics CD.
Reason I gave it a 4?
Because I want to leave room to give a better score for any future stereophonics albums.
There's a reason "Maybe Tomorrow" has been on every sound track in the last year, it's that good!.......2005-11-18
Disappointing. Don't start here!.......2005-08-27
Unfortunately, this album never really bears fruit. The songs are all over the map...they range from just noise, to bad 80's power rock (e.g. High as the Ceiling)...to feeble attempts at soul (e.g. Miss You Now). What happened to the great (and incredibly witty) songwriting of the earlier albums!? It's like they said "let's do something different...for the sake of doing something different..."
I was so disappointed in this album...I've yet to check out LSVO!

Broadway takes on the spiritual ..........2004-01-29
I'm going to be the dissenting voice here: thank goodness I signed this disk out of the public library 'cause I'm sure not going to listen to it twice.
There is nothing wrong with the performances. Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle sing beautifully, and there's no problem with the pick-up orchestra under James Levine.
The problem, and it's huge, is the conception of the show and the musical arrangements. To make the video marketable, I suppose, the producers decided that the concert had to be big: big names, big arrangements, big effects. So we have eighteen spirituals given the musical theatre treatment, with a philharmonic chorus providing chain-gang sound effects, big brass, and big percussion -- including a chinese gong. A chinese gong in a spiritual??? Spare me! Almost every track turns out sounding like either a curtain-raiser or a big, end-of-act production number with cute and predictable modulations between some of the stanzas and the sort of curly-cue orchestral ornamentation typical of Broadway shows.
And you know what? It all kills the spirituals stone dead. The spiritual is one of those musical forms where less is more and very little is best of all. That's how they started, after all. That's how and why they worked for their original audiences, and that's why they were powerful enough to make the transition from folk song to art song. If you want to hear Battle sing spirituals that are irresistible, listen to the set on her Salzburg recital CD, also with Levine (ASIN B00000E31B). There, the music speaks for itself and speaks with a strength and a beauty that the tracks on this disk never approach.

Here's the stuff honky-tonk heroes are made of: wistful heartbreak classics like Harlan Howard's "Pick Me Up on Your Way Down," Johnny Cash's "Train of Love," Hank Snow's "I'm Movin' On," Ernest Tubb's "Walking the Floor over You," and seven others sung by Jimmie Dale Gilmore, the Texas troubadour and member of the Flatlanders who was born with a teardrop in his voice. There are no surprises on Come On Back, just rewards, as Gilmore and producer Joe Ely rely on tried-and-true arrangements that frame the singer's angelic warble with deft touches of baritone guitar twang, tasteful slide lines, and sparks of bright fiddle. But the disc's more than a Biblical reading of country's cryin' side. These tunes were also favorites of Gilmore's late father, a roadhouse guitarist who died from Lou Gehrig's disease. And that makes Jimmie Dale's readings of Hank Williams's "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive" and the gospel closer "Peace in the Valley" all the more poignant. --Ted DrozdowskiAlbum Description
Jimmie Dale Gilmore's first album since his critically lauded `One Endless Night' (2000) is a collection of songs introduced to Jimmie by his father as he was growing up in Lubbock, Texas. Most of the songs were written and/or made popular by classic country artists such as Johnny Cash, Ernest Tubb, Hank Snow, and Ray Price. Jimmie makes each song his own with the same soulful, timeless delivery which has made him an American treasure since his early days with The Flatlanders.Customer Reviews:

Best of Episodes IV - VI.......2007-05-16
Conducted by the Skywalker Symphony Orchestra, there shines through an obvious love of the material being played. These are among the best versions I've ever heard of these songs and the production quality is first rate.
My only slight niggle would be that at times, the horn section seem to come through a little too strong, but that might just be my tastes and my sound system. And it is not enough to keep me from giving it 5 stars. All the best from 3 of the best movie soundtracks in the past 30 years.

Star Wars Music Sampler.......2003-07-12
While none of the material here is surprising - we HAVE heard all these themes before in the London Symphony Orchestra-performed original soundtracks in their various incarnations - the Skywalker Symphony (a group of talented musicians assembled especially for this performance) performs Williams' concert hall arrangements with clarity and love for the material. There was also an attempt to add more variety to the 13 tracks to further avoid confusion with the other "Star Wars Trilogy" single CD collection. The Cantina Band (that jazzy Benny Goodman style bauble from Star Wars) and the bouncy The Little People are here, as well as the more "traditional" Main Title, Princess Leia's Theme, Yoda's Theme, and the famous Imperial March (Darth Vader's Theme). Particularly impressive is the concert hall arrangement of The Throne Room/Finale, which is very different from the film version.
While I prefer the individual film scores from either the Soundtrack Anthology or the Special Edition collections, for listeners on the go, younger music lovers, or newcomers to John Williams' music, The Star Wars Trilogy: John Williams Conducts John Williams is still worth a listen.
You just want more!.......2003-03-04
I gave it a 4 stars rating, only because of this. I have all the music from Star Wars, and definitely I think it's a crime to make a compilation from such a terrific soundtrack. You MUST have the entire score.
However, if you can only get this one (as it was my case around 10 years ago), it is an excellent example. For a limited space, I would have chosen the same themes.

The Desert Song/The New Moon.......2005-10-06
However, back to the CD. To listen to this super CD is pure pleasure, a real nostalgia trip. Although I had never heard of the musical The New Moon, I was very surprised to realise that the music was almost a familiar to me as from The Desert Song. Aha, the joys of listening to the old fashioned wireless when I was a little girl!

Two classic operettas on one CD.......2004-02-03
This set offers a classic DESERT SONG recording with Felix Knight, Wilbur Evans and Kitty Carlisle. Some of the dialogue is hysterical: "I Can't kill you" says Kitty before she sails into "I Love You" in the first act finale. It's silly but it's fun.
THE NEW MOON is a more or less straight reading of seven numbers from the score (plus a nicely arranged Overture conducted by Victor Young) performed by a solid cast.
Sound quality on both operettas is quite good considering the age of the original masters: DESERT SONG is 60 years old now.
Stupendous Operettas Finally Available.......2002-10-18
Of the two, THE NEW MOON comes off best with absolutely stunning baritone singing by Lee Sweetland on "Marianne" and "Stouthearted Men" and finer but less impressive work by Jane Wilson and Thomas Hayward on the other familiar numbers. And they are very familiar. Even if you've never seen this show (or the altered film version with Jeannette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy), you'll have heard many of these songs as background music or featured in the film DEEP IN MY HEART, the story of composer Sigmund Romberg.
THE DESERT SONG gives a nice representation of its score hampered only by Kitty Carlisle's tremulous soprano waverings. Wilbur Evans and Felix Knight carry off the male roles with great artistry.
With these shows almost never being revived (except for their film versions, the latter made in 1953 with Gordon MacRae and Kathryn Grayson), this CD is a most welcome treat.
