If there's a certain instant familiarity to this collaborative celebration between U.S. guitar icon/musicologist Ry Cooder and Cuban fret legend Manuel Galbán, it's only testimony to how deeply the island nation's rich musical heritage permeated American pop music in the '50s, '60s, and beyond. Cooder and Galbán (a key compatriot in the American guitarist's Buena Vista Social Club project) invent a back-to-the-future sound--twin guitars fronting a Cuban rhythm section of two drum kits, congas, and bass--whose dreamy swing quotient is matched only by its sense of mirthful abandon. Thus tracks like "Dru Me Negrita" and "Los Twangueros" manage to evoke everything from Link Wray, Duane Eddy, and the Ventures to Mancini and Esquivel, while Cooder and Galbán twirl a standard like "Patricia" and the nervy title track around dueling poles of tradition and experimentation with deceptive grace. It's joyous, mercurial stuff that the two musicians conjure at their fingertips. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
As Cooder has written - ''You can look at this as a road trip through different worldless fantasy landscapes. Sometimes you're in bright daylight, sometimes the streets are dark & empty. You're riding with the Conjunto Sinuendo - drummers Jim Keltner & Joachim Cooder, Conga-player ''Anga'' Diaz, & bassist Cachaito Lopez, to hold you on the road. High performance Twang!'' Slipcase. Unbearably Cool Guitar.......2006-01-18
Ry Cooder has long demonstrated his nearly frightening ability to deeply assimilate remote cultural influences, never betraying the slightest condescension. He finds himself in the presence of Cuban master Manuel Galban whose sense of the obscure and beautiful is a match for his own; indeed, it is often hard to tell who is who, as the strings bend and chime as if with one mind.
If all that weren't enough, the superb accompaniment lifts Ry and Manuel ever higher with flawless and soulful Carribean rhythms. The syncopations - the accents - the perpetual motion - all lend a sense of absolute inevitability to these songs, as if they have always existed.
I can't stop listening to this one. 5 stars, one of Ry's best efforts!

While she came to global prominence as the female singer on the Buena Vista Social Club album and in the film, Omara Portuondo has a career that--like the other participants--stretches back many years. She puts her experience to good use on this record, sounding for all the world like a Cuban Billie Holiday, smoky and quietly tragic, with a history of lost love. The lush arrangements, which often sound transplanted straight from 1950s Havana, frame her voice exquisitely while guests such as Ibrahim Ferrer, Compay Segundo, and Rubén González add their inimitable talents to the mix. Her reading of "The Man I Love" ("El Hombre Que Yo Ame") is also a microcosm of the disc--slightly jazzy, with a yearning vocal that's emotive without ever being overwrought. There's little doubt that Portuondo is a world-class singer, and this is the ideal showcase for her extraordinary talents. --Chris NicksonCustomer Reviews:

Omara Sears my Synapses. Let her Blister yours, too.. .......2006-10-27
This is the best of all the Buena Vista Social Club productions, IMAO. And whatever that woman up in one of the featured reviews means in saying that this music isn't danceable, I have no idea. Maybe she's in traction or something and can't move. I mean, I barely can myself. It takes something special to bring whatever rhythm I have out of me, but Omara does it every time. No drum machines or thumping bass, true- she's much more potent than that. It's much more a Billie Holiday slow burn, but in Spanish, y el espanol es una idioma mas proximo al corazón que ingles.
El fuego va consumirle.
Sorry about that. Soy el asesino del espanol. But it is still one of el gitano's axioms that if he can break his excreble Spanish down on a lady, then the repartee is practically over. And Omara is one of his very most secret weapons. Loose her, and the party or date will- how to say this - improve. Coulé, coupé, touché.
It happens every time. This album comes with el gitano's seal of guarantee. Buy it, use it with judicious abandon, and enjoy..

Good jazz SACD sampler.......2005-06-06
Sound is good and well separated on the analogue 6 channel output designed for playing such a disc. But the music taste of the disc producer is strictly a jazz taste which doesn't meet that of a lot of music listeners. Beija-Flor, Come with me and Watermelon man are fantastic.
As a conclusion, it's a reliable SACD sampler but not comparable to DVDA which has almost the same sound fidelity, and include further videos, lyrics, photos and interviews.

What sounds like an early-model Casio playing "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" quickly gives way to a classic Perez Prado riff. On top of it all, Lou Bega--born in Germany to a Ugandan father and Italian mother--hoarsely exhorts the floor to "Mambo No. 5." A runaway hit in more than a dozen countries, it's an agreeable trifle, if ultimately not as charming as "Macarena" proved to be a few summers back. Throughout this cash-in album, Bega comes off like a cross between a less clever Tone-Loc and a less inspired Buster Poindexter. If there's a great Europop-Cuban fusion in the making, its standard-bearers will have to come up with more durable trashy fun than this. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
Great for one or two spins.......2007-05-11
Mambo #5 is just another one of those catchy songs that you'll remember for years just like we still remember "Achy Breaky Heart", "Tip-Toe Through The Tulips" by Tiny Tim, the old lady, Mrs. Miller, whose fame was in her whistling of songs and Napoleon XIV with "They're Com'n To Take Me Away, Ha Ha".
Just because we remember certain songs doesn't necessarily make them great. Lou Bega had a catchy stinger and he got all of the mileage out of it in one release. Which may be a blessing in disguise! Oddly enough, I still enjoy this CD every so often for the melodies and rhythms. Then again, I also have the remastered album containing Napoleon XIV's only -dare I say- Top 40 HIT. And remember... Don't Worry, Be Happy!

Queen of salsa Celia Cruz was royalty long before the music was even called that. 100% Azucar collects 19 tracks from her '50s and '60s output on the Seeco label. Smoking even at medium tempos, the disc is full of the hot mambo rhythms of the Sonora Matancera band and the full-throttle vocals of "la incomparable Celia." Included are both sides of one of her first singles, "Ritmo, Tambo y Flores"/"Elegua Quiere Tambo," along with other unstoppable body-rockers such as "Oye Mi Rumba" and "Mi Soncito." Informed, fascinating liner notes and reproductions of beautiful vintage album covers complete this prime package. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Ten of the 13 tracks here are from the great Machito and his orchestra, which featured Mario Bauza and Charlie Parker as well the lesser-known but legendary Chano Pozo and Jose Mangual. Dizzy Gillespie and His Orchestra, including Quincy Jones and Mongo Santamaria, contribute the 16-minute "Manteca Suite." Other highlights include the first-ever-recorded Cuban jam session--"Con Poco Coco" by Andre's All Star--and "Cubop City" by Howard McGhee and his Afro-Cuboppers (basically Machito and his orchestra). These historical recordings come from the third stage of Afro-Cuban jazz. However, the first stages are essentially unavailable, making this CD as close to the genesis of Afro-Cuban jazz as you can get. Styles may have changed since these recordings were fresh, but sophisticated arrangements, searing horns, and fiery percussion have no expiration dates. --Jonathan E.Customer Reviews:

LOVE IT!.......2007-05-13
Now THIS'LL take the chill off your chili !!!.......2007-03-16
The CD opens with Dean Martin crooning the words to "Sway" which gets the Latin treatment by Dick Stabile & His Orchestra. The mixing of traditional instruments with a Latin beat makes this number shine. "Recado Bossa Nova" by Laurindo Almeida & The Bossa Nova All-Stars follows; "Recado Bossa Nova" has a much purer Latin beat and the musical arrangement uses the guitar very effectively. Once you hear "Recado Bossa Nova" you're going to have incredible difficulty sitting still for the rest of the CD, so clear some room on the floor and prepare for what comes next!
"You're My Thrill" mixes a Latin beat with great use of the horn and drums as Jud Conlon's Rhythmaires infuse it with just a touch of a more traditional American flavor. How's about that piano, too? SMILES
The John Buzon Trio turns in an excellent performance with a solid cha-cha beat for "It Must Be True." As soon as I heard this I wanted a whole CD of John's trio but I didn't find one; and I have no clue why! They give a high octane performance on "It Must Be True" with even an organ thrown into the musical arrangement at just the right moments. This is a high point for this CD.
This CD also contains the classic track "Whatever Lola Wants;" and there is a medley of "Dark Eyes/It Happened in Monterey" by The Mallet Men and 80 Drums Around The World, respectively. Awesome! "A Nêga Se Vingou" shines also with a high energy, fast paced seductive beat and melody that reflects a relentlessly happy outlook on life; and "The Magnificent Seven" shows us how the then-current Latin cha-cha dance craze could be fitted to the score from a major American motion picture, too.
"Desafinado," the second song on this album to be performed by Laurindo Almeida & The Bossa Nova All-Stars, really makes you want to grab your partner and dance, dance, dance for joy! The flute adds a little extra something special to this instrumental track.
"So Nice (Samba De Verão)" will probably be the most easily recognized track on this CD. The organ and percussion carry the melody well; Billy May does a great job with this number.
Some reviewers write that this CD has some filler material. In my opinion, if there is any filler material it is most likely the track entitled "Rock-Cha-Rhumba." This track contains three shorter numbers to illustrate how the advent of rock and roll affected cha-cha music. You may like this; or you may not enjoy this at all. It's a judgment call!
The CD ends with Julie London singing "Sway" with her rather seductive rendition of the very same ballad sung by Dean Martin at the beginning of this CD. I think Dean's version would have sufficed for this CD; they could have added a brand new, fresh track in place of Julie London's "Sway" but the rest of the CD is so good I can forgive this.
The two bonus "hidden tracks" add some color to the CD but they are not the main attraction; some people may even consider them to be pure filler. There is one short track of a man professing his love for his woman as he simply talks about her. If there were only one track I could replace in the track set this number would be it; I would replace it with another musical ballad or an instrumental. The final track gives a brief aural lesson in how to play the bongos; give it a whirl before you dismiss the bongo drum lesson!
The liner notes give the song credits; a wonderful essay by R. J. Smith; and you even get recipes for making margaritas and cuban apricots! Cool! The sound is terrific; Bob Norberg at Capitol Records did a flawless job of digitally remastering these tracks.
The Latin cha-cha craze was just one of several Latin dance crazes sweeping the country in the late 1950s and 1960s. I highly recommend this CD for anyone who enjoys such music; and people who enjoy lounge music or Latin music from the 1950s and 1960s will treasure this CD as well.
