Snow Patrol are frequently compared to Coldplay in the press, which seems strange as they write far better songs and do not appear to be quite so self-hating, nor as rich. Their delightfully dour little pop songs do touch on the melancholic side of things, but the lyrics are wonderfully slice-of-life descriptions. Singer/lyricist Gary Lightbody gives a shout-out to Sufjan Stevens when on the punchy "Open Your Eyes" he sings, "The anger swells in my guts." Perhaps a better comparison would be American indie-rock act Sebadoh? Regardless, this band continues to surprise. If you went to see this mixed Scottish/Irish group on tour after hearing their wistful, breakout third album Final Straw, you might have been a bit confused by the rock juggernaut confronting you. Eyes Open is their most straightforwardly rock record yet, and thanks in large part to producer Garret Lee, it's their best. not only are the 2 singers hot, but this band produces some great indie music. the songs are poetically and thoughtfully written and don't sound as "polished" as the mainstream pop or rock that is out there.

Could there be a more instantly forgettable group than Snow Patrol? I mean, let me guess -- you heard a couple of songs, they sounded cool, you bought the CD and played it a few times, and how often to you play it now? Ever? Mgawsh, they become so tiresome so quickly. You'll notice how fast even their hits get dropped from radio playlists? The DJs got bored too.

Has some good pop hooks but boring.......2007-07-09

A couple of years ago one of my favorite songs on the radio was Snow Patrol's "Run". The song was addictively melodic. I could not get that song out of my head. Last year they did it again with the single "Chasing Cars". I finally got around to checking out their latest album EYES OPEN. I can't deny that the band has talent in writing catchy pop/rock songs however they have yet to demonstrate that they are capable of diversifying their bland, dull, and predictable pop/rock sound. The cd starts off pretty good but halfway through the cd, the quality of the songs goes south for me. Ballads like "The Finish Line" are pretty weak. I find the vocals on this particular track quite grating on my nerves. I did like the song with Martha Wainwright on vocals. That was a lovely song. Overall Snow Patrol reminds me why I find "alternative" music so wimpy and annoying. Let me just say Snow Patrol is NOT indie rock. It's kinda hard to be considered indie rock when you are on a major recording label.

Ok, I really do love Snow Patrol, so when I heard that their new album was out, and heard Chasing Cars on Grey's Anatomy, I really had to get it.
and I was not disappointed. The style is quite different than Final Straw, their previous album, but that made me like it even more. I think it's more alternative rock (more rock) than the last album.
Personally, my favorite song is Hands Open, which is the second song on the cd. All of the songs are preformed by Gary Lightbody . The 8th song on the cd is called Set the Fire to the Third Bar, which is preformed by both Gary Lightbody and Martha Wainwright. This is another of my fav. songs, because both singers harmonize really well together, making it sound awesome.
I love this kind of music, especially Snow Patrol, cause the lyrics are easy to understand, and really make you thing. So take the time to sit back and listen.

I love this album. I was enamoured of the Chasing Cars song from radio and decided to check out the rest of the CD. I am very pleased with the purchase. In addition to Chasing Cars, You're All I Have and Shut Your Eyes are standout songs. I plan to check out the older albums from Snow Patrol.

The music for this third chapter in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is a traditional, efficient action score that, due to the film's setting, occasionally incorporates light Asian touches. The popularity of Hans "Long John" Zimmer (all the credits in the CD's liner notes include pirate-themed nicknames, like the roll call in a Simpsons Halloween episode) isn't in doubt--he sure is one in-demand composer--but afficionados are divided about his artistic worth, and this score isn't about to reconcile them. Some think that Zimmer relies too much on his stable of composers and sticks to tried-and-true recipes; others admire his capacity to weave themes in and out of cues, creating a whole made of subtly interrelated parts. At World's End feeds both camps: Seven of his collaborators are credited with writing "additional music," and the album feels by-the-numbers at times; but those inclined to listen very closely will be rewarded by the way Zimmer sneaks in bits of two main melodies (especially variations on the first track, a pirate theme titled "Hoist the Colours" and cowritten by director Gore Verbinski) throughout. This soundtrack is excellent all the way through. With more variety than the first one...and I dont even want to mention the second one...it has graced my CD player more than any CD in the months since I bought it.

Hoist The Colours!!!.......2007-07-25

I have always been a fan of soundtracks. I really adore the works of Harry Gregson-Williams, Danny Elfman and, of course, John Williams. I now can say I have a new composer that I can add to my list; Hans Zimmer, the composer for Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest, At World's End and he also Overproduced the score for The Curse of the Black Pearl. Compared to past "attempts" I believe that Hans Zimmer has hit the jackpot.

The CD "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" is unbelievably the best CD of the three. It contains 13 tracks including, one of my favorites, Hoist the Colours (the song the boy sings at the beginning of the movie, which becomes the back tone of the entire movie). It is a must buy for all soundtrack, movie, Disney and pirate lovers. I have never listened to a soundtrack this much since John Williams Star Wars Episode 1 Special Edition CD.

But there is a draw back for me. The CD is a Digipak. A Digipak is a CD that has cardboard-like outside rather than a plastic cover like most CD's. I don't `hate' them, I just don't like seeing things of mine getting ripped. So if you don't want your case/album art warped, get it on iTunes.

Overall it is a great CD and a must buy! " Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" soundtrack gets 5 stars out of 5.

This is the best soundtrack in the "Pirates" series. Hans Zimmer has melded the Eastern sounds with the West and composed an intricate melody which is hard to forget. My favorite soundtrack so far!

I'm soooo tired of hearing the Tees squeek out their one hit wonder "Delilah". This song should be used as a torture device to get criminals to spill their guts. Hearing this over and over and over would invite madness. This is my most hated song of all time, surpassing "I Shot The Sheriff", "Betty Davis Eyes", and "Loving You". Dull, sappy, weak, thin, garbage.

Plain White T's are All That We Needed!.......2007-01-14

A mix of power pop/alternative/and indie songs, Plain White T's put a lot of passion in their music. The songs are very good and well written even if they are slightly repetitive. Many of their lyrics are sweet love songs or songs about relationships gone wrong that would appeal to many who listen to emo music. However I would not classify them as emo for their music is generally upbeat. If you like to listen to just a few songs off a CD Plain White T's, All That We Needed, is a good buy. You will find that you fall in love with ½ the songs and the find others are good also. Listening to a CD as background noise you will love the sound and the lead singer, Tom Higgenson, has a great voice. The song "Hey There Delilah" sinks into your soul and make you want to melt in your shoes. It is soft and sweet love song it starts off with;
"Hey there Delilah,What's it like in New York City?, I'm a thousand miles away, But girl tonight you look so pretty,Yes you do,Time Square can't shine as bright as you,I swear it's true"
If this is the only song you've heard off that album I will warn you that it is the only real acoustic song on the album. The other songs are good in a different, more 'get up and jump around,' kind of way. The music is passionate and have very good beat that cause you to want to put it in your CD player on repeat. I would 99% recommend this album but try not to over play it as soon as you get it!

This CD get 2 stars for the last song and 0 stars for the rest. I bought this CD spefically for the last song, "Hey There Delilah." I had hopes that there might also be some other songs on the CD that would be worth listening to. In my opinion the last song was the only one worth listening to because all of the others are simply annoying.

He's sold millions of albums, filled arenas, and hobnobbed with George Harrison, Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison, but Tom Petty's driving heartland rock has often been taken for granted by the same critics who hail John Mellencamp as a genius. Greatest Hits is an airtight argument for Petty's own greatness. Starting with "American Girl," the rollicking, Byrds-inspired single from Petty's first album in 1976, this compilation presents a chronological overview of the guitarist-vocalist's career with and without the Heartbreakers, also chronically underrated as one of today's best bands. Every one of the 16 older tracks is a well-crafted gem, full of solid guitar hooks ("Here Comes My Girl"), arresting images ("Don't Come Around Here No More") and simple but poetic lyrics ("The Waiting").

Petty isn't an innovator; he's a talented craftsman with impeccable taste and a strong sense of rock history, internalizing influences ranging from the Beatles' psychedelic masterpiece, Revolver, to the best of '70s punk. (It's interesting to remember that early efforts such as "Refugee" and "Don't Do Me Like That" first won Petty attention as a New Wave artist). With his Dylanesque vocals and chiming 12-string guitars, Petty is more often linked these days with the sounds of the '60s. Missing a few but it is expected.......2007-07-31

Some of the greatest hits albums always miss the mark. Do not read into my title wrong, for the most part it truly is a great hits collection. I just guess that I like this band so much that some of their songs I truly love are not on here. Can't complain too much though, you get the hits minus a few near hits is what I am trying to say. I would also recommend the box set instead of this if you really love Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

One of America's best bands..........2007-07-13

Firstly, I suppose I am kicking myself for not being aware of the 2000 Anthology by this band...and that Anthology addresses some of the criticisms I have of this compilation.

One of my criticisms is that this compilation does NOT have Tom Petty's duet with girlfriend of the time, Stevie Nicks, of Fleetwood Mac fame ["Stop dragging my heart around"]. Just btb-I do remember hearing in a short radio series about New Zealand super-group Split Enz [whom I consider to be in the same league as Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers] that when the two groups toured together at one time, Tom Petty was a really big pain to them.

This is a band that continually gets lots of their songs played on commercial FM radio over here in Australia...songs like: Refugee; I won't back down; Runnin' down a dream; Free fallin', and Don't come around here no more.

For me, TP&THB is one of those good bands which don't quite have the large catalogue of good songs of the supergroups like The Beatles or AC/DC or Midnight Oil etc, but they have more good songs than you might give them credit for.

E.g. one of my fave songs of theirs is "Don't come around here no more". It features a Beatle-esque or George Harrison-ish Indian guitar or sitar opening. If you get the chance, you should have a look at the memorable video for this terrific song-it heavily references the book by Lewis Carrol "Alice in Wonderland". The video trickery is wonderful to watch.

I'll write down some of the notes I made for this compilation when I was listening to it:

"Anything that's rock'n'roll" reminded me of the guitar sound of, I think, Australia's The Ted Mulry Gang [David Hasselhoff murdered a terrific song of theirs called "Jump in in my car"...maybe this is the song that the TP&THB song reminds me of in some ways. Tom Petty also seems to have Elvis Costello style vocals in this song. I should point out that it looks like MY version of this compilation has an EXTRA song-the one above-I THINK that my version may an earlier version of this compilation or perhaps a later one, or perhaps the version released here in Australia.

"Listen to her heart"-the guitar intro to this song reminds me of the guitar work for the song "Needles and pins".

"I need to know"-here Petty has Bob Dylan-esque vocals. The same goes for "Refugee". Just by the by, I've never heard a bad song with "Refugee" in the title! Check out the Australian band Cold Chisel's song with this this word in the title. Petty's song has a distinctive keyboard sound to it.

"The waiting"-another good song I like from this band. It has a "Turn, turn, turn" style guitar intro.

"You got lucky"-the synthesiser introduction to this song reminded me of The Police's own synth sound for their song "Spirits in the material world". I reviewed The Police's new compilation today at this site.

"I won't back down"-this song has the feel of an E.L.O. song-and seeing as E.L.O's lead singer Jeff Lynne has production credits for this Petty compilation, it is perhaps Lynne's influence which comes out strongly on this song.

"Running down a dream"-another song that you will hear on Australian commercial FM radio. I made a note that this song features an AC/DC style menacing guitar sound.

"Free falling"-another one of my favourite TP songs. It has nice backing singing and some nice guitar work.

"Mary Jane's last dance"-features harmonica, a Neil Young sound to it and a guitar intro reminiscent, I think, of Young's song "Heart of gold".

Lastly, there is a decent cover of the 60's political song "Something in the air".

Overall, this is an album of accomplished pop/rock which is standing the test of time, judging by the fact that this artist is such an FM staple in Australia.

Pettyness Which Plays So Rough................2007-05-19

People. Your supercillous main man Seer is back. And don't be a wise acre and say I'm more cill-y then super. I can deal fine with the barbs. It's the jibes I have a hard time with. Then again, true reflection is an arduous task- not for the meek or faint of heart. And you may not read this review-especially if you have a pacemaker. If you think your Metamorpho has money to pay lawsuits - you are sourly mistaken. There are spirits of the dark (bill collectors) after me as we squawk. But, fortunately for you, I reserve the right to purchase more music for your benefit and live in virtual squalor. Who cares if I have to seek shelter in an abandoned high rise apartment building? You benefit- so stop that whining!
You all know by now how music works. It seeps into your mind. Then, at a later predestined time, you just have to revisit it. It gets into your blood, or synapses, or, into your need to escape and just have fun. And, music should be a pure joy for you as well as something to delve below the surface for. Sometimes we have to do some work too, but if we didn't, it wouldn't be as rich, or rewarding. This is what the whole thing is about. And I've found that I'm allegic to clown wigs. I'm sure the tabloids will have a field day with that.
This album is a testimony for the faithless, an alimony for the penny-less, a contrition for the heartless, and just plain shock treatment for the synapse-less. And, you heard all that first right here from your informative Metamorpho.
I listened to this loud and it shakes and kicks the fibers of your soul into some outer-metaphysical place beyond human comprehension. It is rock, for sure, but such a damn near perfect addicting form of it that it's hard to explain- or comprehend, for that matter. Most of the subject matter centers around relationships - which are nothing new in the rock arena. But, it's what Petty and his fine band of musicians have done with it. They've molded it into generous hooks and alluring melodies that extend beyond the reach of the beautiful and cutesy. This is rough and hard rockin', make no mistake. Petty has never sounded more impassioned than on most of these songs. Listen to his vocals on "The Waiting". Pleading and insistent. But, with his Dylanesque and McGuinnesque influences, he's molded and found his own, unique voice. And swagger. Listen to his warning on "You Got Lucky" and his urgent, gutteral plea on "Refugee". Petty is giving us buckets of his emotions into these songs. The greatness lies in him, and a superbly competent band that knows exactly what to do - time and time again. They are true treasures of rock. It gets my aged Seer's blood flowing once again. Something I haven't felt since the dragon got loose in my castle. It was a good thing I had garlic at my disposal.
Most of these songs are so well written that it makes your favorite Seer's Seer hat do somersaults. It is so incredulous. Everything has a place and a place for everything. No grandstanding here. The band flows - effortlessly - giving us true gems at every turn.
I must admit, I have a certain affection for "Don't Come Around Here No More". The same haberdasher made my Seer's hat as well. But I am not mad.Even if my guides debate that point.
So, the end of this petty tale is that this is certainly a very fine representation of a true, American rocker. Succinct,sonorous,satisfying. Tom Petty has rocked since this offering, but, I feel, never as hard and spectacular as he does here. But he is mega in rock music. Give a listen - then send accolades to me in care of my scottish castle.

Good one-disc compilation.......2007-03-25

This is the best single-disc compilation of Tom Petty that you can find. It's got all of the hits and no filler. Of course, there are more comprehensive compilations out there, but this does well for a single disc. It is definately a very good overview of Tom Petty and the great artist he is. The sound is also very good. I would definately recommend it.

More than four decades after its Broadway debut, the Roundabout Theatre's 2007 revival of 110 in the Shade is a glorious showcase for soprano Audra McDonald, and an eloquent statement for an underrated and neglected work. Based on N. Richard Nash's play The Rainmaker, 110 in the Shade tells the story of a Texas town stuck in a blistering heat wave. Lizzie (McDonald), the daughter of a local widower (Broadway veteran and TV star John Cullum), has resisted all suitors, including the sheriff (Christopher Innvar), until a potential huckster named Starbuck (Steve Kazee) arrives in town promising to bring rain ("The Rain Song"). Just like Marian the librarian, Lizzie thinks she sees right through the scam ("You're Not Fooling Me"). McDonald shines in her solos ("Love, Don't Turn Away," "Old Maid"), but Cullum, Innvar, and Kazee also get their moments either in duets with McDonald ("A Man and a Woman," "Simple Little Things," "Is It Really Me?") or by themselves. 110 in the Shade is obscure compared to Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt's most famous work, The Fantasticks--none of its songs ever entered the popular culture like "Try to Remember"--but it's a beautiful, evocative score that is tailor-made for McDonald's rich voice. Audra McDonald could not be better. She's in perfect voice; her interpretation of Lizzie is amazing, and this CD is an absolute treasure. I saw the production many years ago with Inga Swenson as Lizzie. It was good...this is great.

Couple of days ago, I saw "110 in the Shade" on Broadway in the Roundabout Theatre revival. At intermission, in a trance of emotion, I went straight to the souvenir stand to buy the cast album (available at a non-ripoff price of $20, I'm glad to say). This is something I hardly ever do, but I had just seen and heard Audra McDonald and Christopher Innvar sing the duet "A Man and A Woman," and I had to have that music. Been playing the score ever since. It's a delight and I like the orchestrations very much. McDonald is an utter joy, but Innvar was an unexpected discovery and on the strength of his performance, should have had bigger billing.

Though the score of 110 IN THE SHADE is modest in musical scope, Audra McDonald sings it with all the passion, conviction and care that one could hope for. The other performances on the recording are good, especially Steve Kazee, whose Starbuck feels lighter and more expressive than Douglas Horton on the original cast recording. Bobby Steggert makes the most of every one of Jimmy's lines. Christopher Innvar sounds far better on this recording than he did in the theater. There is a great deal of dialogue on the CD, which may be more enjoyable to those who have seen the production than to the casual listener. The reduced orchestrations are in many cases more imaginative and expressive than the originals, which tended toward bombast in telling this intimate story. They often are reminiscent of Copland's "Appalachian Spring", and I would imagine that's not accidental. If you are an Audra lover, buy this immediately, you'll never hear a finer version of Lizzie's numbers than are offered here.

If U2 hadn't already released a pair of career retrospective discs, this British trio's second album would neatly do the trick in one. Not much of a surprise since Keane spent a good deal of time supporting Bono and company following the release their breakthrough debut, Hopes and Fears. From the melancholic "Crystal Ball" to the sinisterly beautiful "Is It Any Wonder?" (a blatant homage to "Zoo Station"), Keane have perfected their forebear's dark stadium-rock formula on their second album, all the more miraculous considering it was once again done without guitars. If Under the Iron Sea sounds considerably edgier than its predecessor, that's because it was recorded while the band was on the verge of splitting. "Under The Iron Sea" was recorded at The Magic Shop in Soho, New York, and back at Helioscentric Studios, near Battle.

In making this record we tried to confront all our worst fears, to ruthlessly scrutinise ourselves, our relationship with each other, with other people, and with the world at large, and to make a journey into the darkest places we could find.

It made for an incredibly intense atmosphere during the writing and recording of the album, and the resultant songs and sounds very much reflect that. In the songs we created a kind of sinister fairytale-world-gone-wrong, a feeling of confusion and numbness represented by a dark place under an impenetrable iron sea. To express all this we created entirely new sounds by putting an old electric piano and various analogue synths through many different combinations of vintage guitar effects pedals, creating soundscapes that range from the percussive to vast oppressive walls of distortion.

We were writing, singing and performing with a drive, intensity and fury that is almost unrecognisable from our previous music.

It was important that this album had a strong visual presence too, and the start of that was the collaboration with Irvine Welsh on ¡®Atlantic¡¯ offered somebody who both inspired us, and found his own inspiration in our music.

His resulting film echoes the importance of that visual identity we strove for.

We wrote Under The Iron Sea because we needed a record that was going to make us feel alive again.

Good light easy to listen.......2007-08-07

I enjoyed this 2nd album more than the 1st one, they're def. getting better and I would say this one is a MUST HAVE. Atlantic (which is the song they start with) is a four stars, not the melody you're used to hear from that kinda emotional lyrics. Is It Any Wonder is a kinda rock song I liked since I heard it as a single. Nothing In My Way is catchy rythmical type. A Bad Dream it's a cool song I like hearing to get sort of relax, the voice sounds good and calm as the melody and again the chorus is catchy. Hamburg Song didnt impressed me at the first moment but after hearing it a couple of times I realized it was actually a pretty good song just that it's really soft. The low point of this album might be Put It Behind You which Im starting to get to like now but still a little too much repetitive and Broken Toy almost at the end for the same reason.

Keane is light and easy listening.......2007-08-04

Semi Emotional and fun to listen to, the Keane album "Under the Iron Sea" took a while to grow on me. Well not really, I gave it a listen and then forgot about it. Spinning it now I cannot get enough of it, a nice blend of rock that is sensuous and sweet. The singer is really good and each song has something different to offer. I like tracks three, seven and although it is a short little pod in the listing, eight as well. You may recognize track three because it gets some FM radio play now and again. Uplifting songs that I cannot say enough good things about, that is for sure!

From a recommendation standpoint, I would say offhand that if you like Good News For People Who Love Bad News, Sam's Town, or X&Y then chances are you might just love Keane's album "Under the Iron Sea", which is elegant and modern.

It took me a couple tries to like this album, for the sound of "Hopes and Fears" was not leaving my mind. Once you forget that this is not their previous album, you'll adore it.

Honostly, it's not a cd I'd put in all the time because it's not so pop, optomisic and catchy, but it is beautiful and so relatable ("who hasn't felt that way?"-ish). But so great.

LANDMARK ALBUM........2007-07-24

This is a landmark album, just as much as SGT PEPPER, PIPER AT GATES OF DAWN, or even the supreme FOREVER CHANGES, three classics from the psychedelic era - and nearly 40 years on.

From SGT PEPPER, it takes the ambition & production values, from PIPER AT THE GATES the nursery-rhyme approach & use of synthesizers, while it shares the same sense of doom & devastating impact as Love's masterpiece.

What sets this brilliant little group apart from their peers is a genuine flair for melody. Like Lennon-McCartney, they have the knack of writing a good song, their tunes working their way into your head & staying there. As with all the best songs, there is an inbuilt tension between the music & lyrics. Here, the words, often sad, bitter or uncertain, are matched with sweet, sure melodies, cleverly crafted, as on their first album, but more ambitious & expansive. Arrangements follow suit, the overall sound being most pleasing, with liberal use of synthesizers & percussion. The exception is HAMBURG, featuring plain organ/piano accompaniment, but, really, the group hardly misses a trick in presentation. The vocals, courtesy Tom Chaplin, are equally impressive, and there's a touch of John Lennon (albeit a younger-sounding & higher-pitched one) about his voice.

Highlights include:

LEAVING SO SOON - all furious energy & excitement!
BAD DREAM - 'Day in the life' has nothing on this!
TRY AGAIN - tale of woe, allied to another delightful tune.
FROG & PRINCE - classic, Fairport Convention-ish ditty.

Plus, the singles:

NOTHING IN MY WAY - catchy & memorable.
CRYSTAL BALL - an anthem for our times - supercharged!

The only down side is that I really can't see them topping this, though I'd love to be proved wrong.

While the album does have a few forgettable tracks, the singles are amazing and worth the cost of the CD. Fans of Coldplay will be drawn to this band and should definitely give Keane a chance.

The Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, because they didn't try to. Things started inauspiciously when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called in friends Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison for assistance. Two albums later--the second without Orbison, who had passed away shortly after the first was released--the loose-knit collective had recorded material that was as durable, and occasionally eclipsed, the participants' legendary solo work. As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various music supplies and recordings from the 60's and 70's.

You've heard the terms "Supergroup", "Rock "Legends", and "Heavyweights." The Traveling Wilburys exemplified the terms but what made the project so extraordinary were some other expressions "Respect", "Fun", and "Egos in check."

The opening track "Handle With Care" may be the best song written in the past twenty years. The sound of the guitars, the Harrison vocal segments, and the blending of the words and music make this a song for the ages. It is an example of a tune so powerful and addicting that if the rest of the CD were blank justice wouldn't be served if we didn't purchase a copy. The consistency of the tracks the guys penned is a credit to their collective genius. "Heading For The Light" is another instant classic. The vocals are delivered with such sincerity you feel that you are in the recording studio. "Tweeter And The Monkey Man" is Dylan magic. At any moment Dylan could deliver a masterful performance. The song is as eventful as the wonderful words found on "Desire" and Blood On The Tracks." When the follow-up CD came out many unjustly only wanted to compare it to the debut. The new release will be a great excuse to rediscover some brilliant compositions. "The Devil's Been Busy", "Where Were You Last Night?", and "Cool Dry Place" are reason alone that the follow-up should have been placed on a higher pedestal.

The bonus tracks are more than a generous holiday gift. "Nobody's Child" which originally appeared as a charity song for the Romanian earthquake victims is a song that any artist should be honored to have on one of their releases. If you have enjoyed previously the myriad of versions of the song "Runaway", here is another one that will mesmerize you! I don't even have to mention the DVD bonus with the videos.

It's hard to imagine a world without George and Roy. It is very easy to imagine how special their families are!

It's so awesome when a talented group like the Wilburys get together-it's so sad that this is all that they released. I want MORE!!

Who Was In The Band? The Chicks?.......2007-07-30

The DVD was really the only reason to get this set. I had the originals when they were released. The sound is a bit better on these but who really cares? As for the bonus tracks, a total waste of time.They missed a lot of potential tracks which were overlooked as well as a "B" side. They could have even padded out the rest of the CD's with the 12" mixes. Nevertheless, they put Olivia Harrison in charge with Roy Orbison's widow assisting & this was the result! Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan & Tom Petty should have had the say so on this one, not the widows. After all, who played in this band? Enough Said!

If you are a fan of Tom, George, Roy, Jeff and Bob you will love this set. I have both vol.1 and 3 on vinyl, but hardly ever listened to vol.3. I did not realize how good that album was. I have fallen in love with vol 3. The dvd with the music videos and the documentary is fun and very interesting. It is amazing to watch these artists at work. I highly recommend this set.

George's guitar was at Tom Petty's house and by that point they decided to do the group thing.

The group was complete with the addition of Roy Orbison, acclaimed by many as "The Most Beautiful Voice in Rock n' Roll." Unfortunately, Orbison passed away shortly after the first album was released, but the Wilburys succeeded due to the genial camaraderie that is reverberates through both discs. What could have been a train wreck of ego, instead resulted in these guys having a blast, trading lead vocals and harmonies that shimmer with the affection and respect the members clearly held for each other.

Harrison and Lynne's beautiful production make these records both listenable and memorable, particularly "Handle with Care," "End of the Line," and a breathtaking Orbison performance on "Not Alone Anymore". The CD's went out of print for about a decade until Olivia Harrison completed George's wishes to re-master and re-release the material, adding two rare tracks per disc as well as a DVD of music videos and a band documentary. The Deluxe package also includes a hard cover book of rare photos and a sticker.

This is a comprehensive overview of a twice-in-a-lifetime project that, especially after Harrison's and Orbison's passing, will never be repeated.

A bit disappointing. As usual with Tom Waits, some of the tracks are great -- Lucinda and Goodnight Irene are standouts. But too many, while not bad, are kinda ho-hum. With editing, this would have made a better 2-disc set, or a really good single CD.

I bought this CD a couple of weeks ago, but haven't heard it. My husband immediately took it from me & hasn't given it back. "Oh, I keep forgetting it at work." He said it's great. Based on that & the other reviews, I'm giving it a 5 star rating anyway. :)

I plan on getting it by this weekend or going out to buy my own copy.

Nobody does grizzled and world-weary quite like Tom Waits, and coming off 2004's incredible Real Gone, the mammoth three-disc collection Orphans is yet more proof of his bizarre genius. Even putting aside the abundance of great music it contains, it is, if nothing else, a fitting tribute to Waits's persistently uncommercial, marketing-be-damned approach to his music. Comprised of a whopping 54 songs (both Waits originals and covers) and clocking in at about three hours, Orphans is vintage Waits from beginning to end-unvarnished, unconventional, and uncompromising. Given the enormous amount of variety to be found here, everyone's going to have their personal favorites, but whichever tracks one prefers there's no denying that Orphans makes the perfect testament to Waits's endless creativity, stinging wit and gritty, PhD-in-life sensibility.

Waits has long been a a man of many personas-demented carnival barker, old testament prophet, Jesus freak, depression-era bluesman-and even more than his more traditional albums Orphans shows off his chameleonic nature to the fullest extent. With its ample available space, Orphans allows Waits to induldge in genre exercises ranging from rockabilly (Lie To Me); to baroque pop (Little Drop of Poison); to swamp blues (Buzz Fledderjohn); to gospel (Lord I've been changed) without ever sounding like just an imitator of his varied influences. That said, Waits is still at his best when he dwells in a musical territory all his own, be it noisy, free-form experimentation or more reflective, sparsely instrumented balladry.

Each disc brings with its own unique feel, with the first one feeling the most like a proper Waits album in the vein of such all-encompassing classics as Rain Dogs and Bone Machine. Waits gets his classic-rock fix taken are of early with the scorching Low Down, whose big, brash guitar riffs wouldn't sound out of place in the '60's. The clamorous percussion and dizzying time signatures of Fish in the Jailhouse should please fans of Waits's more eccentric side, or just those like this writer who crave something abrasive and weird. Providing a sharp contrast to these tunes, but still very much in line with Waits's overall approach, are the downcast resignation of the bluesy, guitar-driven Road to Piece (a seven-minute examination of the conflict in Israel) and the closing lament of Rains on Me.

The ballad-heavy second disc, while occasionally a tad forgettable, is still home to some of the most brilliant material of Waits's career. The triumphant Take Care of All of My Children is driven by a stirring, martial drum beat, while the following Down There by the Train manages to expertly combine sadness, regret, and hope through Waits's singularly poetic lyrical imagery ("There's no eye for an eye/There's no tooth for a tooth/I saw Judas Iscariot carryin' John Wilkes Booth"-brilliant). In somewhat of a curveball for Waits, Never Let Go is inspiring and poignant in its straightforward message of devotion. There's also a great, booze-sodden lament in Goodnight Irene, which finds Waits's nicotine-stained voice at its most raw and unhinged.

The third disc is a nod to every side of the schizophrenic last two decades of Waits's career, with unstructured noise explorations (the mutant jazz-blues-rock workout Heigh Ho is hard-edged and ominous even for Waits) to a slew of spoken-word pieces to some more tender ballads. Waits starts off the disc by breaking out his classic rasp on the delightfully malevolent What Keeps Mankind Alive, and backs himself up with some inspired vocal beat-boxing on the Spidey's Wild Ride and King Kong. The latter track is especially interesting, with Waits's pained wail augmented by some ear-piercing guitar squeals and a subterranean bass line as he declaims the tragic story of, well, King Kong, with all the gravity of a character delivering the closing monologue of a Shakespearean tragedy.

Why did I wait so long before buying this CD?.......2007-03-24

I've been aware of Tom Waits for many years and have purchased a few of his more popular songs online. However, this is the first album of his that I've bought. My criteria for album purchases is that the album price must be competitive with the sum of the download prices for all the songs that appeal to me when reviewing samples. I was not disappointed and will likely go back and buy some of his older albums.

For me, 4 stars is about as good as it gets because I reserve the 5 for perfection. The biggest negative for me was the lack of lyrics in the the lower cost edition.

The novelty of Audioslave has had time to wear off. The grouping of ex-Rage Against the Machine members and ex-Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell is no longer new; and time has long since come for the band to live or die based solely on the merits of its music, not on the reputation of its members. The good news is that, at least for now, the group is in a position to do exactly that. On Revelations, the band channels and updates the unapologetic boogie of Ian Gillan-era Deep Purple on tunes such as "One and the Same," "Shape of Things to Come," and "Wide Awake" with ease, inspiring awe and genuine surprise. Guitarist Tom Morello has rarely sounded as fresh as he does on the stomp-and-stammer "Original Fire" and the otherwise disposable grunge retread "Somedays." Not every track here can be as good as the opening title cut and a few--the should-be moving ballad "Until We Fall," the closing "Moth"--fall painfully short. But there is enough strength here to suggest that Audioslave's ability to deliver jaw-dropping albums remains intact and its ability to live up to the hype is lagging just a step or two behind. --Jedd Beaudoin

I am a fan of Chris Cornell's. I have all of Soundgarden's albums and am going to buy his solo albums too. Like Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell is a brilliant singer and songwriter and his teaming up with the former members of Rage Against the Machine was an excellent move since all three of the albums put out by Audioslave are top-notch rock and roll.

Cornell's voice is clear and polished and the precussion members (especially Tom Morello) do very well together and I was sorely disappointed to find out about Audioslave's demise. Cornell's music is a work of art and all of Audioslave's CDs would do his former band, Soundgarden, proud.

Hopefully Audioslave will do a reunion tour. Meantime, this and Audioslave's other 2 CDs belong in everyone's CD collection.

Losing the edge.......2007-07-05

Got to admit that I was a major fan of this group after the first AudioSlave cd. Then Out of Exile which had just a little bit less energy. And Revelations, well, just as well they break up I suppose. Chris Cornell's name is up on the marquee over at Denver's Filmore. I just wonder if these guys knew what a good thing they had going? I salute AudioSlave for what they once were!

Audioslave; Revelations, the supergroups third effort, has a more rhythmic and rough feel than their previous two albums, making it sound like it came out of a garage in the early 90's. From the biting second song to the closing arena singalong, the album visit's the bands journey through the mainstream, settling in a comfortable mix between Chris Cornell's melodic vocals, and the aggressive inventiveness that the former Rage Against the Machine members bring.
Chris Cornell was the long time lead singer for the hugely popular grunge band Soundgarden. After six albums and a decade of melancholy lyrics, he emerged into the next millennium with a solo album, Euphoria Morning, that reflected a more romantic and introspective message. After disappointing support, fans were thrilled that he was back to his hard rocking roots when he joined up with the recently disbanded and equally popular band Rage Against the Machine consisting of Tom Morello (guitarist), Tim Commerford (bass and backup vocals), and Brad Wilk (drums). The outcome was dynamite. As guitarist Tom Morello explored melodies, he put his personal mark on a unique heavy grooving style that seemed to speak to Cornell. Audioslave released three albums one right after the other. Incredibly all three were full of new and inspired music, different from the last and more matured as they went. It seemed that Chris Cornell, front man of over 20 years, was hitting his lyrical stride.
The first song and the album's namesake, Revelations is fast, upbeat, and Audioslave's trophy song gets the blood going. The kind of song you can listen to over and over again for hours, finding something new in it to enjoy every time. The rest of the songs ably backs it up with driving riffs, powerful epic choruses textured with subtle and soft verses, creating thrilling ebb and flow through the songs. They seamlessly incorporate groundbreaking solos with Cornell's sage vocal mastery, and they do it with incredibly inventive transitions creating awesome flow while reaching the extreme ups and downs, like a wall of voice and guitar hitting you between the ears as the chorus unfolds. The lyrics also have real life applications, for example equating a sinful life to a stray and beleaguered dog, who is found, and gets food and shelter in the end. Just as in the past two albums, he continues to write of spiritual struggles and questions, but the thankfulness and gratitude that comes through in his words show that some of his questions are getting answers.
The tracks consist of driving beats and hammering riffs, but while the verses can be delicate and polarizing, there is still room left for soft and sweet ballads that Chris Cornell gets his voice around so soundly. Audioslave also explores relatively new territory in Revelations with a small sidebar of political opinion. For Rage Against the Machine fans, political dialogue went hand in hand with their music, but Audioslave has seemed more discreet about mixing it into the music before now, allowing their websites and causes to funnel their political ideas.
Audioslave fans should be very pleased with another great album from the seasoned rockers. Revelations is an album on the same level as it's predecessors, setting higher expectations and redefining what a supergroup can do. With Robert Plant like vocals and groove metal sounds, Audioslave combines them in an album that both classic rock fans and head banging enthusiasts can enjoy. This album also reflects the musical truth that Soundgarden fans and Rage Against the Machine fans continue to learn, that rocking gets better with experience.

Who says rock n roll is dead? This album brings it all back to where it should be. No screeching, carbon-copy, angst-ridden, eye-liner-wearing, sobbing for the chance to meet Marilyn Manson kid stuff here. Just good, clean, dirty rock, played with an ear for what's true and right. Rock on!!!

Ever wonder what happened to Buffalo Tom, the seminal Boston trio whose early-'90s songs were splashed about alternative radio and MTV? They're back, and one spin of their first record since 1998's Smitten gives the impression that they never left and that a decade has gone by faster than a Tom Maginnis drumroll. The melodies still rumble with elegance. The choruses are instantly unforgettable. And the band's original members--Maginnis, Bill Janovitz (guitar/vocals), and Chris Colbourn (bass/vocals)--remain intact and chillingly in synch. While it might be apropos to say they have matured with age, as all three have seen 40 pass them by, the angst and innocence of these 13 songs could easily have come blasting out of 1992. Rockers "September Shirt," "Bottom of the Rain," and "Good Girl" surely entice, but it's the power-poppiness of "Renovating" and "CC and Callas" (both sung by the underrated Colbourn) that drift back to the band's staples like "Taillights Fade" and "Mineral." Add to that canon the radiant melody of "You'll Never Catch Him," where Janovitz's gravelly tenor complements a radiant hook that, together, recapture the brilliance of this essential American band. --Scott Holter

Every song is perfectly written and exceptionally well-played. It was even worth the 9-year wait. Although don't wait so long betwen CDs in the future boys. Every song was a masterpiece that I can not stop listening to over and over. By FAR, their best CD to date. Keep up the great work.

It is hard to believe that Smitten came out so long ago (where did those years go). I was worried that this new effort would not be true and an Adult Contemporary version of the BT I knew of the 90s. Happily I was wrong. Three Easy Pieces is a very strong effort that ranks up there with their best. Gone is the uneveness of Smitten. Every song gets under your skin. They also are doing a good job of using Chris's strong and different vocals. He sings lead on four songs, and unlike most groups where another band member gets a few "token" songs to sing, his are just as great and provide a nice contrast. Buy it, You will likey.

Circa 1993 - Newbury Street, Boston... late afternoon showers followed by sunshine... listening to homemade comps of Buffalo Tom, Dino Jr. ... some of the best memories.

There is comfort in Buffalo Tom. Something there is about the chemistry between these three guys that makes the world feel half way right. Three Easy Pieces calls to mind all the amazing music made during their "popular years" back in the earlier to mid 90's; however, there's no hint of "formula". I don't think they set out to create "Let Me Come Over II". The songs on 3EP have that same melody, that same pop sensability, everything we love about Buffalo Tom. "Where are all those golden years?" - right here in 3EP.

I've been a huge fan of Buffalo Tom since the Let Me Come Over days, and over the years I've eagerly anticipated the arrival of each new release. With such a long gap since the last album, the band had drifted off my radar until recently when I did a random search for them and found that some fresh material was about to hit the street. Having listened to Three Easy Pieces now in its entirety, I have mixed feelings. Overall it is not an outstanding album, but the quality of the good songs and the pristine production more than makes up for the overall weakness of the opus. The opener "Bad Phone Call" immediately strikes you as being something new for the Tom - a lazy, country-tinged rocker that could almost be a love duet if it hadn't been sung by two heterosexual males. "Bottom of the Rain" is more familiar and would have fit right in on Big Red Letter Day, the bands crowning achievement of almost 15 years back. "You'll Never Catch Him" sounds more like Let Me Come Over era material, and is also excellent. However, the band's finest moment is "Lost Downtown," a song that could perhaps be their best ever. Bill Janovich sings as if he is a love-smitten teenager instead of a 40+ something. The gentle, melodic rhythm is complemented perfectly by the bouncing baseline and Janovich's impassioned vocals. It's a subtle piece that demonstrates just how amazing a songwriter Janovich is when he's on top of his game. The rest of the album is, unfortunately, fairly forgettable, and Tom Colburn's contributions are weaker than usual. There is no "Late at Night" "The Bible" or "Twenty Points" here, sadly. All said, this is a "must buy" for Buffalo Tom fans, and others would be recommended to download the above mentioned songs from itunes, lest they be disappointed by the album as a whole. Despite my mixed review, I will be praying to the rock gods that Buffalo Tom deliver at least one more album before they call it quits for good.

Return of the Tom.......2007-07-16

Okay, so it's time to have a tempered review put up here. There will be no gushing, nor will there be no bemoaning hate. It's simply this; it's been a long pause since Smitten and it shows. I rather take issue with the Amazon review that this album is reminicent of past records... it does only in the respect that it "is" a Buffalo Tom record. When I initially put this album on, I'd steeled myself for a let down, as earlier return efforts this year had underwhelmed me. The good news... this is a decent Buffalo Tom record. The bad news... it's not outstanding and I don't hear anything on it that has "breakout" accessibility. Furthermore, a certain spark is somewhat dulled on here... a blunting of spirit, I guess from the passage of time, maybe. Smitten, their last effort, if a little overproduced, still had a sharper pop, spirit to it, even in sad songs. If you have liked Buffalo Tom all through their career, definitely get this. If you have not, start with an earlier Buffalo Tom release, just about any of them. Finally, my favorites and skips change over time, some songs grow on me, and some, I grow out of. My fave on this album, so far, is Pendleton, and I feel, personally, that the album's weakest tracks are ironically the first two. Cheers.~
