Worth making room for. .......2007-07-23
Parsifal is a fantastic opera with mood, layers of tone and symbolic references to spare. Any recording of this epic opera is worth listening to. In the case of the newest DG release with Placido Domingo in the title role and Christian Thielemann conducting, this combination is enough to make it worth adding to your CD library. This live recording is not only a testimony to the professionalism of the two individuals listed above but to the entire cast, starting with the Placido Domingo who is terrific and who, once again, proves his place in opera history as our most versatile and gifted tenor. Even as late as the middle of Act III Mr. Domingo continues to sound strong and commanding in the role (again this is a live recording). He owns the role and, based on recent Parsifal's without him, I am not sure there is anybody around who is truly ready to take over (Hang in there Placido and sorry Ben). Christian Thielemann's reading of the score is wonderful, no big departures here, not too fast and not too slow but a well-balanced tempo throughout the entire recording. Where he excels is in the softer, tender moments of Act III; the Good Friday music specifically. Parsifal is a tone poem with multi-layered orchestral parts that seem to just illuminate and overlap while developing Wagner's most gifted talent. Waltraud Meier delivers her typical wonderful rendering of Kundry - no easy task, with all the characteristics needed: crazy in Act I, a seductress in Act II, and mute in Act III (though she never leaves the stage). Her Act II encounter with Parsifal was wonderful and convincing; her entrance and announcing of Parsifal draws one in and sets up the remainder of the Act. Franz-Josef Selig's Gurnemanz was the only area where I took issue. I love the role of Gurnemanz and believe he carries some of the most important and, in some cases, beautiful singing in the opera; the voice must be just right. Here, I found the dramatic weight missing. By Act III I warmed up to his sound and `lyrical' rendition of the role but still wanted something deeper and with more command. All other roles, as well as the chorus, were exceptional. Be advised: this is a live recording so you will occasionally here stage noise, mostly swords clanking. As I mentioned this is a wonderful opera and this new release is worth making room for in your collection. [JG] A review from OperaOnline.us.
Curiously Flat.......2007-03-30
I am listening to this one on XM radio over the internet. The performance is well sung and the orchestra sounds great, with wide and expansive sound. Domingo sounds like, well, Domingo, but Waltraut Meier as Kundry sounds very nasal. The other men sound fine.
But somehow, there is no passion in this performance. It moves along at the same methodical rate from beginning to end, with no tension in the dramatic moments, and no mystery in the spiritual ones.
Perfectly fine, but perfectly ordinary.

Amazing.......2007-03-08
I have to admit that I am pretty poor at writing reviews but was forced to by the simple lack of them for this recording. So please, don't expect a prose piece consisting of any deep or insightful analysis of this recording - such a thing is beyond someone who believes that music - especially Wagner's music - must be experienced and cannot be described in prose.
And so to the recording; simply this is an amazing interpretation of Parsifal and Thielemann is simply one of of Wagner's greatest interpreters. Heavy praise perhaps but I often feel while listening to his Wagner that this is how Furtwangler would have sounded given the recording mechanisms of the 21st century.
Parsifal is perhaps interpreted as Wagner's most directly "spiritual" works - infusing his interested in Christianity, Buddhism, the neopaganism of his time and - his version - of Schopenhauerian philosophy (this is Wagner after all and of course he felt that he could improve on Schopenhauer's thought. I often wonder what Schopenhauer's response would have been if Wagner had ever actually sent him the intended letter explaining how much he admired Schopenhauer's philosophy but that it could be improved if he only...?)and indeed, this is how the best Wagnerian interpretors perform it. However, the truth is that - in my opinion - it is normally T&S, as normally performed, that seems to project whatever feelings of "spiritually" or "transcendence" Wagner intended much more then Parsifal. However, here at last we have a Parsifal that manages to lift the listener to those heavy states that transcend the normal, everyday realm of existence.
This recording is incredible "cheap", for goodness sake, buy it and experience - honest Guv'.
Radiant performance amid the clatter of stage noise.......2006-08-03
This new Parsial is a truly visionary performance by Christian Thielemann who never fails to amaze. His reading is both pointillist in his illumination of score's mosaic of tone colors and, at the same time, contrapuntally aware of the music's complex layers. The set's only drawback is the unusual amount of stage noise that not only has been allowed to exist, but has been weirdly amplified rather than digitally squelched. Perhaps DG's engineers wanted an "Amfortas Effect" by lancing this ethereal performance with a shaft of the palpably metallic. What are those sounds? (on-stage swords?, an hare Krishna procession? ). For Parsifal fans like me, who love to bathe in the grandeur of the bell-brass-timpani processions of Act I, the shock of hearing "kling soars," like so many pieces of fallen silverware, is irritating enough to retire the entire set on a first hearing. I've since gotten over this distraction, but it has taken time and patience. As to the singers, this set offers an unconventional package. Placido Domingo, in spite of his odd accent, is a heartfelt and satisfying Parsifal. Throughout the four hours, the other singers give a fresh perspective to the expected role casting. One never finds Franz-Josef Selig's Gurnemanz tedious or terminally vatic. His varied and athletic voice has a light upper register and an affectingly rich lower one. Waltraud Meier's Kundry is also full of surprises. Unexpected tenderness, and, turning on a dime, hysteria. In all, one never thinks of this Parsifal as the sanctimonious German Easter Parade that one sometimes hears. Thielemann effectively revitalizes this work without sacrificing an ounce of it's rich beauty. Keep this set with your Knappertsbusch and your Boulez.
Great conductor and star........2006-06-24
Beautiful, just like the same conductor's Tristan. Keep 'em coming DG. Want to hear Thielemann in Lohengrin, Tannhauser, the Dutchman etc. And I know it's expensive but some in the studio would be nice too.

The frenetic pace of this CD is not for the faint of heart. I love all of the songs on here. I've never been able to see Daniela live, but I'd love to. Her raspy vocal delivery is what makes sets her apart from the rest. She proves that you can sing well and come out with danceable music. I also love that she is a songwriter. She is very proud of her heritage and that is so refreshing to hear in an artist. Her description of events, places she's been and where she is from is very lush and picturesque. If you know Spanish or Portuguese, Eléctrica would make for a more enjoyable audio experience. This is one of the best live albums that I own. Take Eléctrica home with you and you'll see what I mean.

The Martinu concerto as it was meant to be.......2005-06-29
This disc fills a useful space in the catalogue, containing as it does the complete music for harpsichord by Bohuslav Martinu, plus as a filler one of the underappreciated masterpieces of the 20th Century, the harpsichord concerto of Manuel de Falla.
The Martinu concerto dates from the mid-1930s, and is a fine example of his neo-classical period. It is in the usual three movements, with two bouncy and rhythmically vivacious outer movements surrounding a touching slow movement. The well-judged instrumentation provides some particularly interesting touches--piano as part of the chamber orchestra accompaniment sounding alongside the soloistic harpsichord, for example.
Most previous recordings of this work have not followed Martinu's original intentions, and have used a full chamber orchestra instead of the nine instruments given in the score, with the result that the harpsichord is often drowned out by the orchestral sound. Not here--the solo instrument sounds out loud and clear, and the accompanying ensemble is very well articulated too. This, combined with the fine (and extremely idiomatic) playing from Monica Knoblochova and an ad hoc ensemble of some of her regular collaborators, makes this recording an easy recommendation in this work.
Just as fine is the performance of Martinu's delightful Promenades, four short pieces for violin, flute and harpsichord. These are amongst the most ingratiating of the composer's shorter works, melodically, rhythmically and colouristically inventive, and the performance here simply sparkles.
The solo harpsichord pieces are slightly less successful. The Two Pieces are studies for the concerto. Entertaining they may be, but they are also slight and unlikely to command repeat attention. More meaty is the 1958 harpsichord sonata. This eight-minute work (in three movements without a break) packs a lot of material into its short duration, but even a good performance like this can't quite hide the monochrome colours and the dutiful rather than inspired nature of the work. The two impromptus from 1959 are amongst the last works Martinu completed. They are short and well-constructed but again rather minor Martinu.
If the disc sags just a little with the solo pieces, it ends with a tour de force. Falla's harpsichord concerto will astonish anyone who thinks of him entirely as the author of Nights in the Gardens of Spain. This fascinating 15-minute work for harpsichord and five instruments is in a completely different world, one that might remind some listeners of Stravinsky and late Debussy, but which is distinctly its composer's own. Its mixture of austerity, rhythmic flexibility, quirky melodies and colourful instrumentation make for a wonderful and thought-provoking piece--and one really unlike anything else in the harpsichord repertoire.
With fine performances throughout and a well-written booklet (even if it perhaps has too many pictures of Ms Knoblochova in it), this disc is easy to recommend to anyone interested in the repertoire.

Hidden Treasure from Prague.......2002-07-06
With a grand opening this excellent recording of Dvorak's comic opera "Jakobin" will keep you tuned for its full 155 minutes. Its magnificant choruses, especially the childrens chorus, the fiery orchestral passages and the native soloists blow you fully away.
The full credits go to Maestro Jiri Pinkas who leads the Brno State Philharmonic. They deliver a fine job with some passionate playing.
The soloists are very convincing. An oustanding performance is given by Vilem Pribyl, who sings and acts the part of Jiri very well. The part of Julie is taken by the beautiful voiced Marcela Machotkova, while the part of Benda is sung by the great Beno Blachut. Although in his mid sixties, the creator of many tenor roles in Czech opera (most notably is his legendary interpretation in Smetana's "Dalibor") convinces as the schoolmaster.
The sound quality is good. The production engineers did a fine job. This Supraphon set is well documented with a libretto in Czech, English, German and French, a Synopsis and some background information about the composer and his work.
Buy this work and every day will start with a smile on your face.

Beautiful budget recordings of Corelli's most recorded Opus from the Slovak Republic.......2005-11-29
Naxos has done a great service to music lovers everywhere offering this release of Corelli's Opus 6 Concerti Grossi by the Capella Istropolitana/Jaroslav Krechek, a beautiful digital recording made in 1990. The musicians of Capella Istropolitana, a large chamber orchestra made up of members of the Slovak Philharmonic, play very well here, and surpass many other recordings of these famous works. (Incidentally, Capella Istropolitana is named after a Medieval university located in Bratislava.) Capella Istropolitana is an modern, NOT period instrument ensemble, and play with appropriate vibrato, but are definitely in a Classical, Chamber type of sound for Corelli's music. They play with appropriate heft where needed, but are always on the lean side, emphasizing the delicacy of textures and sound called for by Corelli's string writing.
My high praise for Volume 1 of Corelli's Opus 6 also applies to Volume 2, by the same forces. I would get both volumes of these lovely works: there are many pleasures to be had, and for so little money you get great sound AND performances. Highly recommended!
Glorious Music.......2004-12-29
Corelli's Concerti Grossi, Op.6 created a sensation when first performed, were the model for composers such as Handel in his own Concerti Grossi, Op. 6, and have won raves up until today.
I first heard a recording of the Corelli Concerti Grossi, Op. 6 performed by the English Concert, conducted by Trevor Pinnock.
This is glorious music. The question of whether one prefers performances on modern versus period instruments is highly subjective and a matter of taste. I tend to prefer this recording (modern instruments) - I own two period recordings: Pinnock/ English Concert, and Goodman/ Brandenburg Consort. But perhaps my greatest pleasure is seeing the reactions of friends hearing this wonderful music for the first time. Excellent performances; ditto for Concertos 7-12.
Very full, immediate sound.
Baroque Fun.......2000-10-20
Corelli's Concerti Grossi Op. 6 is baroque music at it's finest; tuneful, jaunty and lots of fun. If the first Concerto Grosso on this CD cannot convert you to a Corelli and Baroque fan, well, chances are nothing will. Fortunately, Naxos has recorded Op. 6 with the excellent Capella Istropolitana conducted by Jaroslav Krecheck, so we now have an superb version on modern instruments at a bargain price. So those who don't know this music can try it without risking too much capital.
The Capella Istropolitana is a very good band in both intonation and ensemble, and Krecheck's direction is both fleet and stylish. And while modern instruments are used, period performance practices are observed with regards to quick tempos and rhythmic bounce. So unless you cannot live without period instruments, this version represents an excellent hybrid of styles and is recommended without reservation.

Verdi's Requiem--certainly one of his most moving, eloquent masterpieces--was written in honor of the great Italian poet Alessandro Manzoni, whom he admired enormously both for his writings and his political outlook. Though its text is the Latin liturgy, it has been called Verdi's greatest opera because of its basically dramatic character, as well as his own ambivalent attitude toward organized religion. Thus, interpretations tend to emphasize its secular or its sacred aspect, though, naturally, the soloists are trained in the Verdi opera tradition.
For example, Toscanini's legendary performance, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1951, takes exactly the opposite approach to this version. Inwardly expressive, noble, devout, pleading, prayerful, yet with plenty of dramatic intensity, the Toscanini encompasses every human emotion and offers a synthesis of Verdi's vision of the earthly and the sublime. The performers on this recording, captured live on the 100th anniversary of Verdi's death, take the theatrical view. The soloists swoop and slide, sob and sigh, and overdramatize the fear and trembling. Tenor Roberto Alagna belts out his part in the best operatic style, the bass sounds rough, the alto's vibrato wobbles, but soprano Angela Gheorghiu soars radiantly. The choruses are good, the orchestra is wonderful, but the dynamic contrasts go from inaudible to ear-splitting. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
It "grew" on me........2007-07-06
I bought this CD mostly because I heard a few Arias sung by Ms. Gheorghiu and liked her singing enough that I thought I'd give this work a try. This piece is well performed however, it goes from soft to loud and startled me a few times so it can be a little strange adjusting the volume to compensate. As for Ms. Gheorghiu, I wasn't sure what to think of her voice at first in this because I am newer to this genre (I'm a heavy metal "convert") but hey, I'm trying! Anyway, her voice and the music has grown on me and I think she "plays the part well." This composition is not meant to be used in a liturgy...not ever!...and I don't know what Verdi's ideal performance of this would be, but I say she fits the part because the Requiem Mass this is based off of is actually a Mass offered for the holy souls in purgarty that they may have repose into heaven. So, I'd say her darker voice is perhaps the perfect way to express a soul praying to be "liberated."
A superb recording of Verdi's Requiem.......2007-06-19
Verdi's Requiem is one of my favorite pieces from the great Italian maestro. Although it was written in the structure of a Requiem mass, I think that Verdi's composition allowed his dramatic, operatic element to seep into its musical backbone. Many recordings of Verdi's requiem feature conductors who either highlight its spiritual qualities or its operatic qualities, but very few of them are able to coalesce these two in one successful interpretation. I usually like to recommend Solti's recording for its drive, Karajan's Berlin recording for its unnatural, gracefuly beauty, Muti's recording for its energy, Giulini's BBC recording for its spiritual quality, and Toscanini's for its so-called Verdian spirit. All of those Requiems are magnificent, but I would highly recommend this recording for its ability to combine a bit of everything into an interpretation that wins this listener into believing that it is the best Verdi requiem...ever. Abbado was known in his prime as one of the greatest Verdi conductors, and for the kind of musicality and elegance he brings to the score. From him was I able to hear the best Simon Boccanegra, Macbeth, Don Carlo, Aida, Un Ballo, and Falstaff. From this 2001 recording, we also have perhaps the most compelling recording of the maestro's Requiem we will ever hear in this lifetime. This recording has it all--the gravitas, the spiritual abandon, the despondence, the reverence, and the hope that a requiem mass would require for all its resounding themes of death. The Requiem that begins the piece is dealt with the kind of clean execution that the Berlin Philharmonic could only execute, and Abbado does this with an Italianate colour that you will never find in Karajan's recording with the same orchestra. The Dies Irae section is played with such virtuosity and ferocity that you'd almost feel like Solti's recording paled in comparison with the precise articulation of the Berliners. The Liber Scriptus, Recordare, and the Lacrymosa have never been played more beautifully in any other recording. In the Hostias, Abbado is able to imbue an Italianate grace into the music with the shimmering strings of the Berlin forces. It is an experience that every music lover must be able to experience. The Sanctus is played with a waltzy playfulness, while the Agnus Dei and the Lux Aeterna are given a sense of Spiritual longing and hope that gives the piece a most rewarding near-ending before the great Libera Me. The glorious Libera Me that ends this masterpiece has been conducted in the hands of Austrians and Prussians who give it a more Beethoven-like treatment or a Wagnerian drive that does not fit the musical writing, but Abbado gives us exactly what Verdi would probably have wanted, and gives the listener an unforgettable musical experience. This is Verdian conducting at its finest, and with such a great orchestra plus a collaboration of tonally and musically excellent choruses like the Swedish Radio Choruses and the Eric Ericson Chamber choir make this one of the most outstanding orchestral and choral collaborations.
The soloists are perhaps one of the most commendable quartet of singers ever to have sung the parts. Roberto Alagna sings the tenor solos with the grace and fluency that typifies this great artist, whereas the bass Julian Konstantinov gives the music the gravitas recalling Nicolai Ghiaurov. Listen to the Confutatis and you'll know what I mean. Daniela Barcellona is an excellent mezzo, and although I still think Bumbry, Simionato, Ludwig, and Cossotto give more unforgettable readings of the alto parts like the Lacrymosa, Agnus Dei, and the Lux Aeterna, Barcellona more than holds up to these great names. I think her timbre is absolutely breathtaking and reverent, if one can describe it as such. Finally, there is Angela Gheorghiu, one of the best sopranos to sing the glorious solo parts. Gheorghiu is known as one of the best vocal painters due to the way she shades her voice in just about everything she sings. Has there ever been a better Libera Me? In my opinion, despite the fact that Freni, Scotto, and Tebaldi were more vocally endowed, no other soprano has made the Libera Me such a spiritually lifting experience. Five stars from this listener, and I hope that all of you will be encouraged to buy this great Requiem!
Wonderful live recording.......2007-05-09
Gheorghiu is luscious in looks as well as voice and dramatic interpretation. Barcellona and Alagna do fine jobs and Abbado is a master at bringing out Verdi's nuances. Highly recommended.
The Best Verdi Requiem recording.......2007-02-10
If you like your Verdi to jump from whispers to booming drums, you will love this version of the Verdi Requiem. It has the liveliness I've come to enjoy in this masterpiece. In previewing various versions on Amazon, others sounded tame by comparison. And, this one is offered for an excellent price.
A "Regular People" Review.......2006-12-06

Bright, energetic and lively Baroque.......2007-06-08
I really enjoy the Capella Istropolitana. They have such a wonderful and bright sound. I find the works on this CD to be well played and the tempo selection for each movement very good. I listen to Baroque on my daily commute to and from work. I have a particular affinity for Italian Baroque, so I very much enjoy listening to the man who influenced so many other composers of the period. Great CD and an invaluable addition to your Italian Baroque collection.
Volume 2 of Corelli Concerti Grossi, Op.6 as fine as Volume 1!!!.......2005-12-26
As I wrote in my review of Volume 1, Corelli's Concerti Grossi, Op.6 created a sensation when they were written, influenced composers like Handel in the composition of his Concerti Grossi, Op.6, and have won raves up until today.
The performances Corelli's Concerti Grossi, Opus 6, nos. 7-12, by the Capella Istropolitana under conductor Krchek, are as fine as their performances of the first six Corelli Concerti Grossi. These performances, which are played on modern instruments, are the ones I personally prefer: They are incisively and beautifully played, follow performance practice, are very rich and warm sounding. Whether you opt for modern or period instruments is a matter of taste. (I own two recordings of period performances of the Corelli Opus 6 Concerti Grossi which are very fine: Pinnock/English Concert, and Goodman/Brandenburg Consort.) This is glorious, wonderfully affecting music I wouldn't want to be without. I choose to leave the modern versus authentic instrument debate to others.
My high praise for Volume 1 applies here too!.......2005-11-29
My high praise for Volume 1 of Capella Istropolitana/Jaroslav Krechek of Corelli's Opus 6 Concerti grossi applies here, too.
For details, check out my review of Volume 1. I recommend interested listeners who like Corelli to get both volumes, as sound and playing are excellent.
You can't go wrong with this: highly recommended!
baroque beauty.......2004-03-21
This is seamless, glorious baroque music in a splendid performance; The melodies are lovely, and the way the instruments are combined is a thing of constant beauty. As it is stated in the liner notes, "The surviving compositions of Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) are relatively few in number but disproportionately far-reaching in influence", proving once again that it is quality not quantity that matters, and his 12 Concerti Grossi Op. 6, are some of the most exquisite pieces from that time period, and ones that were to inspire the music of future generations.
The Capella Istropolitana are musicians from the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, that started as a chamber group in 1983, and now have grown in size to perform and record the Mozart and Haydn symphonies, Vivaldi, Bach, and much more.
Jaroslav Krecek is an award-winning composer as well as conductor, and has led the Capella for many years.
Recorded in 1990, the sound is clear and crisp, and total playing time 65'45.

This new CD from the Bahia-born singer-actress-dancer Daniela Mercury is a danceable and diverse mélange of Brazilian pop, trip-hop, funk, house, drum & bass, and lounge music styles. Mercury's pithy vocals effortlessly float above the aforementioned world beats. The material on this CD ranges from Mercury's techno-driven work "Aeromoca" and "A Praieira" from Chico Science, to the samba-reggae tracks "Estrelas" and Gilberto Gil's "Quem Puder Ser Bom Que Seja." Mercury also puts her stamp on Carlinhos Brown's clave-samba number "Baiana Havaneira" and "Bora Mora." The highlight of this CD, however, is the elegant "Beat Lamento," a hypnotic track that puts Mercury in the musical realm inhabited by Les Nubians and Sade. --Eugene Holley Jr.

one of the best album of Daniela.......2007-05-02
It's different, more pop international, more mixture of different cultures (Cuba, North Amarica), this album is great, this singer is Great!
Disappointing album and not Daniela's best effort.......2004-09-01
I love Daniela! She has quickly become one of my favorite singers. I agree with one reviewer, however, who said that Daniela's current album is disappointing and is not her best effort. I realize that she is probably trying to challenge herself as an artist by venturing into new forms of music like techno, electronica, and drum and bass. I think that in this effort, however she fails. These songs lack the mischieviousness and sparkle of her previous efforts. This review would have been two-and-a-half stars if I could have selected that rating, but the three stars will do.
If you are a first-time enthusiast searching for a Daniela Mercury album to buy, I suggest that you purchase either "Feijao Com Arroz" or "Sol Da Liberdade." Both of these albums reflect Daniela at her best and contain a mixture of well-written and danceable slow and fast-paced songs. I suggest you buy both (heh)...but with either purchase you can't go wrong. I only suggest that you purchase "Sou De Qualquer Lugar" if you are a die-hard admirer like myself who wishes to complete their collection of Daniela's music.
Santa Daniela.......2003-07-05
Of course I'm wildly prejudiced regarding Daniela Mercury, and to be truthful I can't even remember exactly how I first encountered her...Feijao Com Arroz was the first CD I bought, though, and I was hooked. In a way she is like any brilliant musical artist...you wonder when they're going to lay an egg, and scrutinize each new release with a certain hands up attitude. I'd heard some negatives about Sou De Qualquer Lugar, but I added it to my Daniela Mercury collection anyway, and began to listen to the tracks tentatively. "Mutante" is hands down the best on the CD, possibly the best song she's ever done, and it immediately grabbed me. But, the more I listen to the rest of the album, the more I like it. It's different from her previous work, as it should be, but some very good stuff here. Way to go Daniela!
Hot, Fun, Sexy, Infectous, & Wonderful!.......2002-07-20
I recently saw a Daniela Mercury video on World Link TV and was hooked by her music immediately. I now own three of her CDs and want more more more. At a recent dinner party my wife and I had in Houston, I shared Daniela's music with a percusionist who performs with the Houston Ballet. He loved it as much as I do and other people felt the same. I now need a daily fix of Daniela to brighten my day. I would highly recommend the last 3 or 4 of her lastest CDs. I wish there was a DVD of her videos available as well.
doesn't meet Daniela standards.......2002-06-12
For me, Daniela Mercury is perhaps the greatest female voice of all time. Her music defines the words fun and joyfulness ( I prefer the Portuguese word alegria). However, this album disappoints. It seems she has fallen to the Brazilian female singer curse. Producers have pushed her into electronic, over produced music, instead of staying true to her roots. This CD isn't awful, but it just isn't the quality that one is used to from Daniela. You'd be better off buying Feijão com Arroz. I just hope this is a one CD aberration.
