There is an excellent advantage to owning a Bobby Valentino disc and it is this: no matter how many other discs you've shuffled it with, you will never get confused as to who it is you're listening to, because Bobby V.--V. Tino, if you will--name-checks himself consistently throughout every track. Special Occasion is no exception, but it also earns its keep by way of solid, sexed-up R&B. When the limber-voiced ladies' man isn't strutting his stuff à la the dancefloor-ready "Checking for Me," a full-on stomper about a lady who likes to pretend she doesn't have an eye out for Bobby V., he's pleading his case to a lover in dire need of reassurance ("Turn The Page," "Home is Where You Belong," "Soon As I Get Home"). What binds these tracks is a hard-bitten refusal to skimp on the passion; no matter how quick the tempo or quirky the beat ("Tired of Being Alone" is especially exotic), Valentino delivers with all the fire he can muster. He also has a flair for recalling his mentors without being derivative--check out his Jeffrey Osborne moment on "If I had My Way." --Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:

Maybe they should have subtitled this album O Sister, Where Art Thou? Like the music from the Coen brothers' O Brother... movie, Songcatcher celebrates the emotional purity of mountain music, the acoustic balladry of the Appalachians--only this soundtrack features an all-female assemblage. Among the luminaries who shine the brightest: Rosanne Cash, who sets the tone with the album-opening "Fair and Tender Ladies"; Julie Miller, whose original "All My Tears" could pass as an old spiritual; Patty Loveless, who returns to her Kentucky roots with "Sounds of Loneliness"; and Gillian Welch, who leads an a cappella rendition of "Wind and Rain." Of the more familiar material, Emmylou Harris seems like she's coasting through the oft-revived "Barbara Allen" while Maria McKee sounds like she's singing for her life on "Wayfarin' Stranger." Yet the emphasis throughout is less on vocal virtuosity than on the stark simplicity of the songs, the album more impressive as an ensemble piece than a showcase for individual singers. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:

Bobby Darin was one of the most personally complex and unpredictable artists of the rock era. Indeed, it's hard to find another major artist who reinvented himself with the deceptive ease and overwhelming success chronicled on this 20-track highlight disc. After scoring three lively and considerable Top 10 successes in the space of a year in the late 1950s ("Splish Splash," "Queen of the Hop," "Dream Lover"), Darin traded in his teen idol sweater 'n' slacks for a tux and tie (evidence suggests he considered rock a passing fad!) and went gunning for Sinatra and the Rat Pack. The immediate results were the Grammy-winning No. 1 legend "Mack the Knife" (adapted from Kurt Weill's "Moritat" in The Threepenny Opera) and the enduring, French-inspired Top 10 hit "Beyond the Sea." If Darin spent the early '60s alternately goosing standards from the American songbook ("Clementine," "Bill Bailey," "Lazy River," "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby," etc.) and mending a few rock-pop fences ("Multiplication," "Things"), he still had another surprise in store. His Top 10 take on Tim Hardin's dolorous "If I Were a Carpenter" cast him all too convincingly as conscientious '60s folkie. Other highlights here include his irresistible, swinging take on the lyrically bleak "Artificial Flowers" and his successful, self-penned nods to the '60s Nashville sound, "You're the Reason I'm Living" and "18 Yellow Roses." Darin was considerably more than the first postmodern lounge Revivalist, and herein lies the evidence. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description

Vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, who successfully translated John Coltrane's "sheets of sound" approach to the vibes, became the acknowledged master of that instrument when Milt Jackson died in 1999. A veteran of many historic Blue Note dates, a bit player in the movie Round Midnight, and founding member of the SF Jazz Collective, Hutcherson calls this mostly ballads CD, with pianist Renee Rosnes, bassist Dwayne Burno, and drummer Al Foster, his "love record." All of his powers are evident here: his melodic fluency, vast harmonic imagination, and his incredible ability to make the vibes sing. Like Lester Young, Hutcherson knows how to melodically tell a story, as evidenced by his shimmering takes on the Latin-tinged "Ode to Angela," and "I Wish I Knew," his sumptuous piano duet on the Bernstein/Sondheim classic "Somewhere," and his heartbreaking, solo number "I'll Be Seeing You," Hopefully we'll be seeing and hearing from this genius more often. --Eugene Holley, Jr.Customer Reviews:
Like Fine Wine.............2007-07-19
Having caught five sets of Bobby's band over the last year from locales as distant as Vancouver to New York I was fortunate to have gained an appreciation for what was to become the CD, For Sentimental Reasons. Little did I know when I caught Bobby at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola last November that he and the band were recording the new CD. I think one of the sets that stands out the most for me was a Saturday night at the Blue Note during his CD release party this past June. What a treat.
The song, For Sentimental Reasons, is just that....sentimental. Ode to Angela is a breezy workout by the band, a great driving song. Listen to how Renee fills in the spaces around Bobby's playing on Embraceable You, Dwayne and Al provide a tasty backdrop. Along Came Betty steps out from the ballads, it is a pleasant groove that builds on the solos of Bobby and Renee. Somewhere is reminiscent of Manhattan Moods, that great duo record with McCoy Tyner. Who can help but hum the tune to Jitter Bug Waltz, it is contageous. Renee's solo builds and builds until she becomes the perfect foil for Bobby's solo and the two climb to soaring heights together, ultimately to leave us with that melody. I have always liked Al Foster's playing, especially on Skyline, Bobby's last solo effort, but his cymbal work live on Jitterbug Waltz is outstanding. What Are You Doing The Rest of Your Life - the notes land like dew drops - it's as if the song were written for Bobby. Don't Blame Me, like track four, steps away from the ballads and has a great walking bass line. Spring is Here, beautiful. I Wish I Knew makes me wish Bobby would do a samba/bossa type CD, great tempo and cymbal embellishments from Al. Finally, I'll Be Seeing You....Bobby playing with four malletts....exquisite.
Yes I am a fan of Bobby's, his music, his band and particularily, For Sentimental Reasons. His solo releases are like fine wine...better with age and to be savoured.
Plenty of beautiful love ballads !! .......2007-06-29
Thus vibes maestro Bobby Hutcherson, perfectly summing up the considerable appeal of his latest album, on which he's joined by a subtly responsive rhythm section pianist Renee Rosnes, bassist Dwayne Burno and drummer Al Foster on what the vibesman himself describes as 'a whole album of ballads and love songs'.
Ever since he appeared on the scene in the 1960s, the music of Bobby Hutcherson - "master vibes player" - has come in two parts. One is tough and abstract, the other, well, softer. It's still like that, and this record certainly catches Hutcherson No 2, the "romantic".
Essentially, it's a ballad session, though occasionally jogging into medium tempo for a piece such as Fats Waller's Jitterbug Waltz.
The mood is helped considerably by the rhapsodic piano of Renee Rosnes.
Even in this melting mood, Hutcherson's sound still has his trademark, slightly extra-terrestrial, feel, with a note sometimes left to hang in the air like a hovering UFO.
But he has seldom seemed closer to his predecessor among great vibes virtuosi, the elegant Milt Jackson of the MJQ.
Culminating in a gorgeous, softly glowing solo rendition of "I'll Be Seeing You", the album showcases the limpid elegance and delicately burnished power of Hutcherson on achingly tender material such as "Embraceable You" and "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons", but also includes spritelier fare such as a sparkling mid-tempo visit to Harold Land's "Ode to Angela" and an arresting version of Fats Waller's "Jitterbug Waltz".
The focus throughout is mainly on Hutcherson's understated power and apparently effortless grace, but Rosnes also shines; as the great man says: "Renee knows so well how to keep things open and flowing just by all the varied harmonic suggestions and implications of what she plays"...
Another classy, intensely musicianly album from Kind of Blue.

It's probably best known for raising the stakes for 1980s blockbuster shows by landing a helicopter on stage, but Miss Saigon is also a good show with good music. As a follow-up to their international smash Les Misérables, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg (with an assist from Richard Maltby Jr.) adapted the tale of Madame Butterfly to the Vietnam War, realized here by the original 1989 London cast. While it may seem overheated at times, the despair and passion fit the tragic story, and Schönberg's pop-flavored style receives its most appropriate setting. Leading the cast are Jonathan Pryce as the Engineer (a Eurasian character whose casting generated some controversy when the producers wanted to have Pryce, a Caucasian, reprise the role on Broadway), Lea Salonga (in her first major role) as the young Vietnamese bride, Simon Bowman as her lover, and Claire Moore as his American wife (and a young Ruthie Henshall as one of the sweaty bargirls). The songs include the bawdy opener "The Heat Is on in Saigon," "The Movie in My Mind," "Why God Why," the romantic duet "The Last Night of the World," the female duet "I Still Believe," the male chorus number "Bui-Doi," and the Engineer's mocking "The American Dream." The booklet includes photographs and full lyrics. It's also available in a 58-minute highlights version. --David HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:

Miss Saigon (Original 1989 London Cast).......2007-01-05
Miss Saigon- even better than Les Miserables!.......2006-12-11
To start, the cast is absolutley fantastic. Of course Lea Salonga is outstanding here and plays what I think think is her best performance of her career in Kim. Simon Bowman is also great, His big song "Why, God, Why?" is one of the stand-outs of the show. I was also very suprised at how much I liked the supporting cast as well. Claire Moore does an absolutley fantastic job as Ellen. and "Now That I've Seen Her" is one of my favorite songs of the whole recording. I also loved Peter Polycarpou as John, and of course, Jonathan Pryce as the Engineer.
I also found the story so interesting and dramatic, but a good dramatic. While Les Miserables was more a "story within a story" kind of musical, Miss Saigon's is easy to understand, deep, and makes you feel instantly connected to the characters, not knowing who's side to take in the story.
Miss Saigon is one of my favorite muscial's (which is saying a lot, sice my other favorites is Rent and Wicked) and this is a definitley a recording that you'll want to have if your a fan of musical theatre. Trust me when I say that if you give Miss Saigon a chance, you will be truly be rewarded with this beautiful tale.

best of bobby rydell.......2007-07-30
as greatest hits on labels that are not very well known
The wait is OVER--a fine CD of Bobby's hits.......2007-07-23
The CD track set begins with the early rock and roll, doo-wop sounding "Please Don't Be Mad." Bobby sings this with all his heart and soul; and the backup chorus enhances the beauty of this opening number. "We Got Love" starts with the chorus singing these words and when Bobby comes in he positively takes flight! The chorus harmonizes so very well and the musical arrangement sports an infectiously happy, upbeat melody and tempo. Excellent!
"Wild One" speeds up the tempo even more as Bobby rocks this one to perfection! Love those ladies on backup--and the melody has a great beat to it! The percussion adds to the quality of the number, too. It's easy to understand why "Wild One" was a big hit for Bobby. In addition, Bobby sings a perfect cover of "Volare" with a stunning arrangement and a great female backup chorus. "Sway" sports an early 1960s Latin beat to it as Bobby croons this without a superfluous note!
"That Old Black Magic" gives us another example of Bobby taking a classic pop vocal and infusing it with a rock and roll arrangement to make "That Old Black Magic" his very own. Excellent! The tempo changes a few times on "That Old Black Magic;" and this only serves to enhance the number further.
"Wildwood Days" refers to that Jersey shore beach so many people always enjoyed in summertime during those simpler times. The relentlessly happy, upbeat tempo works wonders along with a wonderful female backup chorus. Bobby's voice is in perfect form for "Wildwood Days." His voice is energetic and full of masculine warmth. Who could ask for anything more?
"The Cha-cha-cha" sports a Latin beat; and "A World Without Love" shows us how well Bobby could cover a classic Beatles tune. "Jingle Bell Rock" comes off as a masterpiece; Bobby Rydell sings this along with Chubby Checker and the number comes off without a hitch! Awesome!
The CD ends with a track called "A Message From Bobby." This was originally on a 45 rpm record that came along as a bonus with a 33 rpm record. Bobby uses "A Message From Bobby" to thank his fans and reminisce a bit about his recent successes.
The liner notes include the song credits and Jeff Tamarkin contributes an informative essay about Bobby and these wonderful songs.
Bobby Rydell fans can rejoice that his greatest works for Cameo are here on this CD. I also recommend this CD as an excellent starting point for people who want to get to know Bobby's artistry for the first time. We are all much better off for Bobby sharing his talents with us; and hopefully Bobby will continue to perform as only he can for many years to come.
This guy is great!!!.......2007-02-22
Met him in Ocean City, Md. in the late 50's at a Buddy Dean record hop & was impressed at how sweet he was. I've had a crush ever since! Would love to see him again & know what's happeing in his life (children, career,
etc.) This CD is wonderful & brought back a lot of good memories.
"Tremendous And Sad".......2007-02-02
Now, what is sad and it has nothing to do with this CD. I believe that from about '61 into'63 his talents were developing at an enormous clip. During the summer of '63 he had a STARRING role with Ann Margaret, Dick Van Dyke, and Paul Lynde in the HUGE movie "Bye Bye Birdie" and within the movie he sang a very moving song, "One Boy" with Ann Margaret. This is one of the most beautiful duets that I've ever seen and heard. The movie was a huge success. He followed the movie up with a touching and very big hit record,"Forget Him". That, sadly, became his swan song. Many americans truly did, very ashamedly, did "Forget Him".I feel as though with the movie "Bye Bye Birdie" and the two touching songs, "One Boy" (With Ann Margaret within the movie) and and the big hit, "Forget Him", which followed the movie, he was on his way to super stardom in both the recording fields and that of motion pictures. That is until the Beatles SQUASHED him with their fluff. He had (has) more talent within his little finger than all four of The Beatles ever had. In fact, his talents outweighed all of the fluff of the British artists that suddenly began to flood our american airwaves including not only The Beatles, but The Dave Clark Five, The Rolling Stones, Gerry and the Pace Makers, Hermans Hermets, and even many of the american artists such as The Beach Boys, etc. I'm even including groups like "The Hollies", etc. as producers of fluff that crushed Bobby Rydell. It was so very unfair when he was being totally cut out when his total talent was becoming more and more evident and more than likely super stardom was on the horizon. He was crushed by fluff.
It's tremendous that the CD is available and it's sad what The Beatles and other "artists" plus what the american public did to him. Shameless.
Brings you back in time.......2007-01-11
life (not that I'm that old). Real music nostalgia for those who grew up
in the 60's. This is a definitely a must have cd for fans of rock and roll

If the movie Bobby is director Emilio Estevez's nostalgic attempt at celebrating his father's generation, the accompanying soundtrack makes for one amazing goody bag. There's no arguing the greatness of the classics that it collects, like Smokey Robinson & the Miracles' "Tracks of My Tears," Stevie Wonder's "I Was Made to Love Her," and Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence." But even among the tracks that aren't instantly evocative of 1968, a certain era-specific sense of intrigue seeps through--it's there on Demi Moore's titillating and surprisingly well-done "Louie Louie" and again on Mark Isham's mournful but beautiful "No One Left but Bobby." Best of all, though, is the juxtaposition of the oldies with Aretha Franklin and Mary J. Blige's "Never Gonna Break My Faith," featuring the Harlem Boys Choir. "You can cast the first stone, you can break my bones / But you're never gonna break my faith," the powerhouse that is Ms. Franklin sings; a minute later, Mary J. underscores the point with gut-busting certitude (nobody knows struggle like Mary J.). That line alone is enough to give listeners chills. Enough, too, to convince them that, as gripping as music was in 1968, 2006 may not be far behind. --Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:

GREAT MOVIE, GREAT SOUNDTRACK.......2007-05-17
I WILL BE SEEING THE MOVIE IN MY HEAD. I WORKED ACROSS THE STREET FROM
THE HOTEL ON WILSHIRE WHEN THIS HAPPENED. I HAD BEEN TO THE HOTEL SEVERAL TIMES WITH CO-WORKERS AND CLIENTS. AFTER THAT NIGHT I NEVER WENT BACK.
MY ONLY COMPLAINT IS THAT ALL THE SONGS IN THE MOVIE WERE NOT INCLUDED ON THE SOUNDTRACK. WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT A SOUNDTRACK OF A MOVIE WITH HALF
THE MUSIC ON IT ? MAYBE THEY SHOULD REMAKE THE SOUNDTRACK AND INCLUDE
THE HURDY GURDY MAN ......"Down through all eternity, the crying of
humanity,'tis then when the Hurdy Gurdy man came singing songs of love"

Where's the score soundtrack.......2007-05-01
It is a real shame that they did not include more of the score in this soundtrack.
Melancholy Sounds of an Era.......2007-02-10
This CD opens with short speech by Robert Kennedy. This introduction provides a reference for the remainder of the CD.
Mary J. Blige and Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin open this collection with a marvelous gospel song, "Never Gonna Break My Faith," with the Harlem Boys Choir providing backing vocals. This song was written by Bryan Adams, Eliot Kennedy and Andrea Remanda for this movie. Fans of Blige and Franklin will love this song. Awesome new song, classic sound; need I say more?
The 1965 Smokey Robinson and the Miracles classic "Tracks of My Tears" is next. The Supremes 1964 hit "Come See about Me" follows. I am unfamiliar with the 1966 Shorty Long song "Function at the Junction," though the style of the song places it solidly in the 1960's. The original version of "Grazin' in the Grass," an instrumental by Hugh Masekela, is the sixth track on this CD. I am much more familiar with the vocal version by Friends of Distinction than this original version. "I Was Made to Love Her" is the seventh track on this CD and was a 1967 release by music miracle Stevie Wonder.
The mid-1960's was an era of musical revolution. The Moody Blues released "Days of Future Passed" in 1967, heralding the beginning of art rock and progressive rock. "Forever Afternoon (Tuesday?)" was one of the hits from that ground-breaking album. The Los Bravos song "Black Is Black" follows. Los Bravos is unique in their own way as they are a Spanish rock group with a hit song in the U.S.
Marvin Gaye's 1965 song "Ain't That Peculiar," which was written by Smokey Robinson, and three Miracles, is the tenth track. Another Aretha Franklin hit, 1965's "Baby I Love You," follows.
Demi Moore manages to shock everyone by belting out a unique and well done version of "Louie Louie." Who knew? I was expecting anything but a highly interpretive song that makes me reconsider my opinion of Ms. Moore. Ms. Moore's version is much slower than the original, but the style is very retro and could easily have been from the late 1950's or the early 1960's.
The Mark Isham instrumental "No One Left but Bobby" just tears my heart out. I must be getting old; I keep thinking what might have been.
Simon & Garfunkel are the final song on this CD. What song could it have been but "The Sounds of Silence"?
The closing track is the now ironic speech by Bobby Kennedy, "On the Mindless Menace of Violence," backed by the Mark Isham instrumental, "The Mindless Menace of Violence." This track is a fitting and poignant coda to this album that captures the essence of tragedies the United States faced in the 1960's. Those tragedies are embodied in the deaths of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, and Bobby Kennedy, but they extend to so much more: the tragedy of Viet Nam, the tragedy of Kent State, the tragedy of segregation and race riots. We all fondly remember hippies, flower power and the summer of love, but many of us have forgotten the pain we experienced as our country grew outside the tidy little world of a chicken in every pot and a television in every living room. It is painful to remember, but before we walk down these roads again, we should.
Though not in the album, Senator Edward (Ted) Kennedy concluded his eulogy for his brother by quoting George Bernard Shaw, "Some men see things as they are and say `Why?' I dream things that never were and say, `Why not?'" Please think about this phrase when you listen to this album. Then go out and make the future a better place.
Never Gonna Lose.......2007-01-09
Other than that song, it's a real dissapointment.

Although his first solo record tanked, this release looked like the beginning of a superstar career. Brown, a former lead vocalist with New Edition (he was replaced by Johnny Gill, but both men participate in most NE reunions) has an appealing, if somewhat grainy, voice. It's a good match for the hip-hop beats that underpin some of the best songs here, especially "My Prerogative," which at the time sounded like an anthem. His ability to deftly merge R&B's upscale and hip-hop street esthetic (both Teddy Riley and Babyface produce tracks on this CD) changed the role of the rake hero. Sadly, this was Brown's lone significant musical moment as a solo artist. Except for marrying Whitney Houston, his life since has become a skein of self-destructive activities. --Martin JohnsonCustomer Reviews:
