Five BEAUTIFUL Stars! Ivan Lins is Wonderful!! "Cantando Historias" ("Singing Stories") is a brilliant CD collection of updated Lins' classics. This world famous Brazilian composer, singer, and pianist continues to grow in stature and success a full three decades after his start. This electrifying CD, recorded live in Rio De Janeiro, is an instrumental and vocal gem that drops us in the middle of an enthusiastic audience that can't help singing along. Singing complete verses, no less.

The CD was the surprise of the 2005 Latin Grammy Awards, taking the overall "Album of the Year", a first for a Portuguese singing artist. It also won the "MPB Album" Latin Grammy. The singing is in wonderful Portuguese, but the beautiful, powerful music will sweep you away without the need for translation. I speak no Portuguese and I love this music. There are also special guests on this CD: a smoldering performance by Simone (sporting a fetching short hairdo as seen on the CD insert), Jorge Vercilo in great form, and the elegant Zizi Possi, who add their special flair to this live performance.

My favorites, 'Pieces D'Resistance', are the joyous CD opener "Abre Alas" (Clear The Area), the beautiful gentle samba "Porta Entreaberta" (The Half-Opened Gate), Zizi Possi in duet with Ivan on the heartfelt "Bilhete" (Ticket), and the senusous Simone/Lins duet on "Comecar de Novo" (New Beginning, aka The Island). In addition, "Guarde nos Olhos" with Lins and Jorge Vercilo is spellbinding, as are classics "Madalena", "Dinorah, Dinorah", "O Tempo Me Guardou Voce" and a rocking "Ai, Ai, Ai, Ai, Ai". Five HUGE Stars!!

For new fans, Ivan is known outside of Brazil chiefly for a slew of his famous compositions which have attracted major artists, including the Grammy winning song "Velas" ('Sails'), which was beautifully recorded by Quincy Jones with Toots Thielemans; "Love Dance" (Lembranca) by Dianne Schurr and Vanessa Williams, "Before It's Too Late" (Antes Que Seja Tarde) by the Manhattan Transfer, "The Island" (Comecar de Novo) by Sarah Vaughn and Barbra Streisand, the huge Elis Regina hit "Madalena" which Ella Fitzgerald fell in love with and recorded, "She Walks This Earth" (Soberana Rosa) by Sting, and "Dinorah, Dinorah", which was recorded by jazz man George Benson and Elis Regina. Whew!!

(Note: "Guarde nos Olhos" and "Desesperar Jamais" (Never Despair) are not shown in the Track Listing, but they are on the CD as Track 2 and 5, respectively. The songs "Aos Nossos Filhos" (To Our Children") & "Cartomante" are merged on Track 6; "Vieste" (You Came) & "Iluminados" (Illuminated) are merged on Track 10. All of which yields 14 great tracks. Arjona's "Historias".......2003-11-08

Tremendous album! Even for native English speakers -- or maybe especially for them (that is, Gringos like me), this is a first rate album. Two of the cuts..."Historia de Taxi" and "Ayúdame Freud" are without equal as contemporary ballads. I've had the album at least 7 years and it is a constant, never boring favorite. Fun way to learn Spanish, too...Worth it at twice the price. I'd write more, but I'd rather go listen to 'Taxi' for the millioneth time.

Este disco bien podría llamarse Arjona: Grandes Éxitos.......2003-11-05

Arjona es famoso por su música con letras muy particulares. Pero la riqueza conceptual de esta obra escapa de las prisiones de la fama. Por algo tiene tan merecido el éxito. Después de triunfar con Animal Nocturno.. al parecer decidió utilizar todo el dinero posible y "meterlo" en un nuevo disco. Por algo hay más de 50 instrumentos diferentes en esta colección de 14 majestuosas canciones... que más que un álbum, parecería su primera colecci'øn de "Grandes Éxitos"

Y precisamente es éste el disco más exitoso de Arjona... quizá no el mejor, pues Santo Pecado y Galería Caribe están años luz a distancia... pero aún así, este disco es genial. Contiene los famosísimos exitos "Señora de las Cuatro Décadas", "Historia del Taxi", "Te Conozco", "Realmente No Estoy Tan Solo", "Casa de Locos". Las demás, quizá no sean tan famosas, pero igualmente canciones excelentes... en particular la JOYA lírica "Ayudame Freud", las preciosas narraciones de la cotidaneidad latinoamericana "Me Están Jodiendo La Vida", "Chicos de Plástico", "Si Yo Fuera" y "Amor de Tele"

La calidad de las letras y múscia hacen de este un disco esencial para cualquier colección respetable de música pop en español.

The best CD I ever heard.......2003-03-31

This is an excellent CD!. When I heard this CD I couldn't believe that is was so good and interesting!!.
I not only liked Arjona's voice, but also, what the songs said.

If I had to say which is my favourite songs, it would be either HISTORIAS DE TAXI, or SI YO FUERA, or REALMENTE NO ESTOY TAN SOLO or LA NOCHE TE TRAE SORPRESAS (yes, I know, I should choose only one, but it is so difficult!!!).....but CASA DE LOCOS and HISTORIAS DEL PORTERO are excellent too.

I loved Arjona's songs but I only have one CD so far: "Historias". Anyway, I think that is the best one.
Please tell my what YOU think about this genious of music. I'd love to discuss that with the man, woman, girl or boy that is reading this now.
I can't believe that only recently (in December), I discovered Ricardo Arjona's songs. Before that, I had heard one or two of his songs, but not all the CD.
I recommended this CD...once you hear it, the only thing that you are going to complain about is that you didn't hear before!.

One of the best pop en español albums of all time!.......2002-09-29

Arjona is a master storyteller, and that is not all that you get on this disc. The arrangements on some of these tunes are top notch as well. "Historia del taxi" is one of my personal all time favorite tunes, which tells a pretty steamy story of lust, social indifferences and revenge. Then "La noche trae sorpresas" and "Me estan jodiendo la vida" are great rocknroll tunes. "historia del portero" is a country song which is written brilliantly as well, that one always makes me smile. Buy this, and be sure to read the lyrics, it's like reading short stories.

This CD is beautiful, the songs are so tranquil and passionate. There is one in particular that my fiance has dedicated to me and it just makes me want to cry. We'll probably play it at our wedding. I highly recommend it for anyone that loves romantic music!

Great Compilation.......2006-02-02

La Ley is and will forever be known as one of the greatest bands that ever existed. Their sound is ultimately unique to any other band in the "rock en espanol" movement. Their catchy lyrics and sounds have made them extremely popular. It is a shame, however, that after fifteen years this great band is saying goodbye to the rock scene. In my opinion, it is a good idea to leave on a high note. Historias e Histeria captures some of the greatest songs of this amazing band. Songs like El Duelo, Doble Opuesto, Amate y Salvate, Aqui, Histeria and Mirate could be found in this CD. In my opinion, it is a job well done and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys great music.

I know everyone is entitled to an opinion, but I disagree with one reviewer that la Ley is one of the worst bands ever. La Ley put out some great albums early in their career, but had fallen to commercialism in the past years with a very safe and predictable sound. That's happened to other great bands, like U2 for example, this doesn't mean that these guys dont have talent, in fact they are great musicians, specially the guys that have left the band (bobe-rip, aboitiz & rojas)and Beto Cuevas has a great voice and is (or was) a good lyricist.
The CD leans towards the latter years, hence more commercial music less art. But the DVD includes all of their videos and that's where the value is, they have chosen very good video directors and they are good performers on the videos. Overall the CD takes one star off, but the DVD is great.

La cancion HISTERIA hace el disco..........2005-06-03

la compilacion es buena o mala o regular depende del gusto de las personas...faltan algunos exitos, como hombre, paraiso y otros pero igual no me parece mala la compilacion....pero quiero mencionar los temas nuevos, "mirate" y "bienvenidos al anochecer" son buenos pero en particular la cancion "histeria" me parece ESPECTACULAR...fuerte, pegada,solida se siente a un beto cuevas que canta con ganas y corazon. muy buena cancion como para decir que la La Ley sigue vigente. ojala que su separacion no sea muy larga y salgan con otro buen disco. ...recomiendo el disco y sobre todo la cancion "HISTERIA"

La Ley; the best.......2005-06-01

La Ley is one of the best bands today, this cd shows how great they are. Along the way, they have faced many obstacles like the death of the founder and lead guitarrist Andres Bobe, but they were still able to perfrom and creat great music. I would recommend this CD for anyone that likes spanish rock. This CD is a masterpiece!!!

Great band, weak compilation.......2005-05-11

La Ley is one of the best pop rock bands in Latin America. However, this album, which was released as a compilation of the band's works, falls short of showcasing the band's work in all their splendor. You are better off getting a copy of just about any of their albums: truly, it's hard to go wrong with them. So I don't know who would be responsible for picking tracks on this compilation, but they are doing the guys a disservice.

Sentidos Opuestos is a good dance group (not like Kabah who tried but failed) Alessandra Rosaldo's vocals shine in this collection:
1. Donde estan (4/5) a peppy dance number that sounds like a cross between LFO and Hex Hector
2. Amor de papel (5/5) a ballady dance number that i like
3. Escribime al cielo (4/5) the intro aint bad..but it goes on like a dancey pop number mixed with 80's disco
