At 77, Ibrahim Ferrer has lost none of his cheeky charm. Buenos Hermanos lives beautifully up to its title--"Good Brothers"--with those Cuban stalwarts Cachaito Lopez and Chucho Valdes joined by that genius of the electric guitar, Manuel Galban, and with the Blind Boys of Alabama enriching the basic mix. Moreover, Ry Cooder, who originally coaxed Buena Vista Social Club into life, here acts as midwife once again. This CD, he says, was "the last chance in the world today to work with such a voice." Well, Ferrer's voice no longer has the ringing exhilaration we heard on his solo album, Ibrahim Ferrer. His effects are more muted now, more laid back, but they still cover a kaleidoscopic range of tone and color. He delivers his boleros with lovely swing, and he radiates the genuineness of a premarketing age. It's easy to believe that most of these tracks were one-takes: the whole thing has wonderful freshness. --Michael Church

5 out of 5 stars Bueno Musica.......2007-02-12

I first heard Ibrahim on PBS in the Buena Vista Social Club Special. I have loved his feel for the music ever since, he has just the right cadence, timing, sound and feel for the cubano music, I've heard other cubano's sing the same songs but they come alive when Ibrahim sings them. When I'm in the mood for the latin beat and sound of another era this is the first artist I think about.

5 out of 5 stars Solid comeback from Ibrahim Ferrer.......2003-11-08

Four years after his successful 'Buena Vista Social Club Presents Ibrahim Ferrer' the now 76-year old Cuban singer still holds on strong and delivers an album that surpasses his "debut" album (I don't mean the quotes in a disrespectful way, but rather with regards to the fact that he was only exposed to the world back in 1999 by Ry Cooder).

With a solid band with some of Buena Vista Social Club's performers and the Cooder father/son team also on board, and having picked an exquisite combination of some compositions of his own and some Latin music standards, Ferrer is bound to make you get off your chair and dance, even if your deaf or have two left feet! From the first chord, time freezes around you and he embarks on a mission to make you smile and have a great time, without regards for anything troubling you. After all, he is the best example there is of getting a break: he made into stardom at age 73, so that oughta tell you something.

Highlights of the album: the opening track (loved it) and the classic "Perfume de Gardenia" with the thoughful participation of the Blind Boys of Alabama. Get it, love it, dance to it!

4 out of 5 stars Too much Ry.......2003-11-01

Unlike Buena Vista and Mas Cuba Libres where Ry wisely stayed in the background and only occasionally made himself know, here he takes center stage once in a while.
In spite of this, there's just too much talent in this album to give it less than 4 stars.

While Mr. Cooder is to be commended by making such great music (I am particularly grateful for the rebirth of Ibrahim's and Ruben's careers) accessible to Americans after decades of withdrawal feebly filled in by the soulless and superficial commercial sop called 'salsa' it's worthwhile to mention that Europeans have been enjoying the renaissance of Cuban music for years. It was the release of the Estrellas de Areito in France in the late 70's that has snowballed into the rediscovery of this most sublime and richest of all music.

Ibrahim fans, checkout a Edenway's recent release of Ibrahim's 1950's recordings with Chepin's Orquesta Oriental. If you think his voice is honey smooth now, you should listen to him as a youngster.

5 out of 5 stars This is an AWESOME sounding disc!.......2003-09-09

Not only is the music on these "Buena" discs great and funky, the recording quality is beautiful. Recorded in the Egrem studios, it is one of the few discs that actually capture the vibe of the studio, where the drums are placed, and who the background singers are standing behind. If you think these are bad recordings, you don't have the proper listening equipment. You can almost feel the shape and size of the place, what the walls are made of. CD's are mostly recorded in the setting of a soundproof studio, where sometimes the sound that recorded is lifeless, but with a black background, and super digitized. These CD's are the opposite, and you feel like you are in the studio. look at the liner notes for the Buena Vista social Club, and Mambo Sinuendo, and you can see how the mics are set up, and you can tell why it sound the way it does. I bet the mics used in this recording are vintage and priceless (obscure).

5 out of 5 stars It's Ibrahim ... what more do you need to know?.......2003-06-03

If this were just Ibrahim Ferrer reading from the Havana telephone directory, I'd have bought it anyway. But it's much more, of course. This loveable man brings one of the most moving interpretations ever to THE richest form of music on earth. And now nearly eighty years old, he doesn't appear to have slowed down one bit, nor to have lost any of his magic.

If you know Ibrahim Ferrer's music, then there is nothing I need to add. But if you don't, and if you love music, then you MUST get to know Ibrahim Ferrer. When his moment in the spotlight finally arrived, he didn't believe it, and practically had to be dragged to the studio. Now, audiences the world over have fallen in love with him.

The bad news is that it's recorded at the Egrem Studios in Havana. But even the miserable quality of that half drowned studio, with its ancient equipment, can't hold back the brilliance of Cuban musicians.

The good news is that Ry Cooder plays solo. I mean that he plays so low that you can't even tell he's playing. Apparently, he's finally gotten the message. Ry, we love you for what you have done to popularize artists like Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González, Eliades Ochoa and so many others. But slide guitar just doesn't go with son, pilón, or guaguancó.

And let's not forget the other musicians and singers (the usual suspects, of course): Manuel Galbán, Orlando "Cachaíto" López, Manuel "Guajiro" Mirabal, Amadito Valdés, Chucho Valdés, Miguel "Angá" Díaz, José Antonio Rodríguez and so many others.

My recommendation is that you buy this CD. You won't regret it. It's beautiful, it's soulful, it's moving, it's vibrant, it's Ibrahim!!!

    Album Description

Jarocho (hah-ROH-cho) describes both the people and culture of the southern coastal plain of Veracruz, home for more than two centuries to one of Mexico's most exciting musical traditions, the son jarocho. Songs such as "La Bamba," "Cascabel," and "Siquisirí" occupy a major spot in Mexico's musical folklore. José Gutiérrez, Felipe Ochoa, and Marcos Ochoa, raised on the tropical ranchos of Veracruz's interior, are three of the most accomplished ambassadors of the modern-day son jarocho tradition. They play complex, hard-driving rhythms on the Veracruz harp and on the guitars called jarana and requinto, and sing high-pitched vocal melodies brimming with wit and regional pride. They have toured Europe, the United States, Central America, and Mexico, while in Veracruz they continue to enliven weddings, baptisms, public events, and celebrations of all kinds. Extensive notes in English and Spanish.

4 out of 5 stars Yummy! Scrumptious Listening!.......2006-02-28

I really love this band! I picked up this cd not knowing what to expect, to be honest because I have not heard much about Los Hermanos. I just knew that they were a popular band in Brazil. After listening to the cd I was pleasantly surprised, and now I'm a huge fan. I enjoy alternative music(grunge, punk etc;) and Brazilian music so I was surprised to learn of a band that melded the two together wonderfully. They're comparable to some of the so-called "great" alt-indy bands in the states, but they manage to incorporate traditional Brazilian elements into their album (as the addition of the live horn section.) The lead singer's voice is emotional and sexy (with that right balance of angst) as found in some of the best grunge bands that came out of Britain and America.

My favorites off of this album are "Samba a Dois," "Ultimo Romance," "A Outra" and "Cara Estranho" but the other songs on the album are also great. For me, having punk and brazilian beats mixed in are like having my favorite candies blended together to come up with a surprisingly great new combination. If you love alt/indy and Brazilian music as I do, check this band out they're great!

4 out of 5 stars Los Hermanos- A very creative Brazilian Band.......2005-05-25

Hello: To start with. I am not brazilian, i am argentinian and i live in miami Florida. So my critic of this album is very fair.
Los Hermanos, as other great bands have reached their perfect balance with their 3rd album.(remember Ok Computer, War and so on)
They are quite creative. But the greatest thing is "They take music seriously", and thank god. Not too!!!seriously.
I will not go in a one by one description of the songs, but i recommend this album to anyone who really listens to music in a deeper way.
They have great taste for the mixes, as well as arranging.
They are a little bit ironic. But not too ironic.

The version of "Cara estranho" on the album. I don't believe is their best. It was the most played single in brazil. So i guess that is why they went for the "Punk-hard rock chorussy mix".

If you get to listen to any of it's versions as unplugged (you might find it the net, as i did). I recommend you very much to listen to them unplugged because many songs are much better in that ambience.

Ok, so resuming. Buy this CD, if you like rock, if you like music as strange as it could be. Then buy it.
It is not the best brazilian record ever. But it's a great album. It is something different. And that's what counts.

5 out of 5 stars Great indie rock from Brazil.......2004-12-10

Brazil doesn't have a very big indie-rock scene, but this album is certainly one of the best you can find. If you like Los Hermanos, you might also try Monokini, who are also very good.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Music You Can Find Out There.......2004-10-06

Los Hermanos is currently my favorite brazilian band. They are fantastic. Ventura is their third album and it brings beautifully composed, written and arranged songs. Ventura and Bloco DO Eu Sozinho are, in my opinion, cds that everyone should listen to. Los Hermanos's sound is unique, mixing mpb, samba, rock, pop and more to create music that really is, if not always exciting, very emotional. If you are a music fan, like me, you should try this one. I think this band deserves a lot more recognition inside and outside of Brazil, so please give this one a try.

Favorite songs: O Vencedor (creative, exciting, and beautiful) , Ultimo Romance (beautiful song), A Outra (took long to really like this song, now I love it), Cara Estranho (the album's firts worksong, very, very good), o velho e o moço (beautiful, especially if you know portuguese), Deixa o Verão (along with O Vencedor, the most exciting song in this CD, among my top favorites in the disc), conversa de botas batidas (as pleasant as pop music gets), do lado de dentro (beautiful and excitingly well arranged), Um Par (emotional, exciting, well arranged, etc), De onde vem a calma (the best way to end a cd). The rest of the songs are also nearly perfect, so there is no use in listing my favorites.

I also strongly recommend O Bloco Do Eu Sozinho, wich is their best CD in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Alison Young: A little Tango.......2001-03-12

Alison Young's recording, "A Little Tango in Her Blood," is a superb set of flute and piano performances of contemporary Argentine music. With rather more than just a little tango in her blood, Ms. Young performs this Argentinean program with Latin character and a silvery tone, and Vicki Seldon is her lively and sensitive collaborator on piano. Composers on this CD include well-known names, especially Ginastera and Piazzolla, and some less-familiar but mostly excellent ones.

The performances are first-class in artistry and technique, while style, character, and mood provide solidly satisfying listening. The flute sound is especially gorgeous, with an lovely low register and stability of tone throughout the entire range, and one simply hears no breathing. Technical challenges abound and are fully met, but one gets a sense of an emphasis on music-making rather than virtuosity; these players are bringing us music rather than merely showing how good they are. Technique and balances are consistently excellent.

Half the bands on the CD are transcriptions by Ms. Young, which would ordinarily induce some reservations for this reviewer. However these are musical, intelligent, and idiomatic transcriptions, and one would be pressed to discern which are original works and which are the transcriptions in this collection. One other fine transcription is by Enrique Granados.

Piazzolla is represented, of course, by several tangos, including a very early one. And one of his last compositions, Milonga sin Palabras, Song without Words, is dedicated to his wife. A fugue, surprisingly, is in the final set of three works of this collection, by Piazzolla, Fuga y Misterio, with much rhythmic character and an unexpectedly Bachian rather than bacchanalian quality though still Latin in quality, arranged by Granados. The brief, lyrical contrasting section is lovely. The final two works are moody and dramatic.

Ginastera's Impresiones de la Puna, in three movements, is an early work, dating from 1934. Arranged by Ms. Young, it has two slow movements, and a lively, rhythmic dance finale. It is fascinating and musically rewarding to hear a Ginastera quite a bit younger than the one we hear for example in his more familiar orchestral Variations Concertantes. It's like seeing early paintings by Mondrian or Picasso-so different from the later works yet with seeds of what is to come.

Some splendid surprises are works by composers new to this reviewer: Angel Lasala's Poema de Pastor Coya, and Horacio Salgán's Suite Argentina and Don Agustín Bardi. Lasala's Poema is in three movements with both a singing quality and rhythmic variety. The latter composer, Salgán, has much personality and character showing through in his music. His Suite Argentina is a recording premiere and it has rhythmic interest, a danced quality, and a strong lyrical sense.

The liner notes, in English and Spanish, are informative with texts of the original works when they are songs. Borges and Ferrer are amiong the poets. I warmly recommend this recording to those interested in fine flute playing, in Argentinean music, and to the general music lover.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Flute CD - even my plumber liked it!.......2001-03-03

I love this recording! As a fellow flutist, I can appreciate the high level of technical ability and musicianship demonstrated by Ms. Young in "...a little tango in her blood". In addition to her soaring, lyrical sound and impeccable intonation, Ms. Young has a wonderfully intuitive sense of style and feel for the music. I would recommend this recording for all types, from classical music buffs to the casual listener.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful performances and quite beautiful music.......2001-02-25

I am very impressed by both the music selections and, more importantly, the wonderful performance. Ms. Young plays beautifully and with a true feel for the music. This, combined with an excellent musical rapport with Ms. Selden, gives a real life to these well chosen selections of Argentinian music. I highly reccomend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Getting Some Tango in Your Blood.......2001-02-22

Alison Young, a flute recitalist of great poise and technical security, dazzling precision and virtuosic flare and the Principle Flute of the Houston Ballet Orchestra, demonstrates her considerable talents in ALISON YOUNG ... A LITTLE TANGO IN HER BLOOD. This work on the Albany Records label takes full advantage of Alison Young's experiences in Argentina as a musician artist-in-residence in 1998, performing and teaching in the regions of Patagonia, La Plata, Buenos Aires and Corrientes. Alison Young recreates the atmosphere of the native music of Argentina in a way that will transport you to South America. Composers highlighted in this work include Astor Piazzolla, Carlos Guastavino, Alberto Ginastera, Angel Lasala, Hector Gallac and Horacio Salgan. A newspaper in Argentina (Rio Negro) reported on "...Alison Young, with a little tango in her blood" and this wonderful collection of flute pieces will surely put a little tango in your blood as well.

5 out of 5 stars A real musical treat by a fine musician.......2001-02-22

A flutist of unusual accomplishment and musicality, Ms. Young's rendition of an Argentine repertoire sounds as if she had been born on the Pampas and brought up in the sophistication of Buenos Aires. The playing is superb, and the music is a treat to listen to, especially because much of it is new to North American ears. In addition, the extensive notes, written by Ms. Young and printed in both English and Spanish, provide a rich scholarly background to the music and are worth the price of the CD by themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Seis Corrido Style of Bomba... .......2007-02-12

Most of this Bomba is in the style of Seis Corrido, which is the traditional style of Bomba from Loiza, preserved over the centuries by the Ayala Family. (My grandma comes from that town and has that last name... I wonder if we're somehow related... ? Would be interesting..)

    5 out of 5 stars Bomba de Loiza--Hermanos Ayala.......2006-07-09

For those that don't know, Bomba is a Puerto Rican music and dance form with it's roots in Africa. It is characterized by specific rhythms played by three barrel-shaped drums called "barriles" and backed up by a piece of wood struck with drum sticks (the "cua") and a marraca. What makes the dance so special is the fact that the solo dancer, which can be male or female, interacts with the lead drum and actually controls the drum with his or her movements. While obviously, you can't see the dance in an audio performance, if you listen carefully to this recording you can hear the solos and imagine what the dancer is doing.

Loiza is a town in Puerto Rico that is treasured and respected for its preservation of the African folk arts. Before a highway and a bridge made it relatively easy to get to, Loiza was geographically isolated, there was limited influence from other cultures and art forms dating back to the time of slavery were nurtured and developed, making Loiza a cultural reference point for all of Puerto Rico.

While Bomba is danced in several parts of Puerto Rico, the Bomba of Loiza is distinct. It is characterized by a very fast and dynamic pace, with some movements that are not found in other places.

The Ayala family is widely recognized as the lead group in presenting the Bomba of the Loiza...hence the cd's title. The liner notes, which are in Spanish, explain that the Ayala family became a professional performing group 40 years ago. This cd is the real thing, produced for a discerning and knowledgeable audience. Do not expect to hear salsa or any form of commercial Latin music. This is a high energy, fast-paced performance from start to finish, with a good selection of classic Bomba songs.

This is a "must have" for serious collectors of Bomba music. It's a wonderful recording. Que viva la Bomba!

5 out of 5 stars This compilation is SMOKING!.......2005-06-29

This bomba compilation is the real thing... fast-paced, extremely rich in the drum section, quite solid in the chorus response. Should anyone need a primer on Afro-Puerto Rican music, this may be the place to start. Another alternative would be any production by another Loiza native, William Cepeda (who played trombone with Dizzy Gillespie, among others), or Raices, a CD/DVD documentary produced by Puerto Rico's Banco Popular

3 out of 5 stars Fast Bomba de Loiza.......2005-01-26

I try to return again and again to this record, just to try to understand it. Out of due respect. Unfortunately the feeling is the same. This bomba style of the Ayala has a default: Too many drums! It may look very nice live, but when you get too many drums in the studio, it sounds like cats and dogs. This last time I listened to the recording I found some jewels. Even though the rhythm is the same monotonous fast machine-gun shooting through the C.D., some of the melodies if turned into the Cangrejero style ( Bomba from Santurce)would sound much more appealing, because there are less drums, and more variation of rhythms
and the accent is where it should be: The primo drum playing the solo danced by the bombero/bombera.

Just listen to Yuba La malire by the Ayalas and turn to listen to the Cepedas do the same song and judge by yourselves.

As Bomba spreads through many states and even to Europe and as far as China!, guess which is the Bomba style that prevails?:

The Cangrejero style of Santurce, championed by the Cepedas.
    Wonder Why?
The difference is that the Loiza style remained provintial in its pattern of rhythms. In the other hand , the Cepeda style of Santurce evolved in the cosmopolitan environment of San Juan. It was influenced by Flamenco forms and figures as well as other forms. It remained purely Bomba, but more international, more "hip", if I dare say...

An another best kept secret is the Bomba Balancé from Mayaguez.
Viento de Agua Unplugged, plays a nice example, "Siré, Siré".
It is worst buying the Viento de Agua Unplugged.

By my good friend, Samuel Lind. This music takes me back to when I was in High School at La Escuela Superior Carlos Escobar Lopez, in Loiza. I remeber summer when I would go out and dance bomba all night and get drunk with my friends. Those were the days.

4 out of 5 stars There's nothing wrong with this cd...it can be enjoyed.......2003-01-22

I think "Tropical" is a wonderful cd and this merengue can be enjoyed. It definitely does not compare to other albums in their repertoire such as " Los mundialmente sabrosos" from 1993 or "Los Dueños del Swing" their album from 1995 however; it's still a reflection of their capacity to produce "good" merengue. Not all the songs are going to catch your attention, but there are few that are "hits" such as: Fin de semana, Y es fácil, Rompecintura and Dígale que no. If you are a fan of Los Hermanos Rosario and you wish to continue collecting their music, this cd is a worthwhile purchase. In spite of the views of the other reviewers on this product page, I think the cd does merit some recognition. You'll enjoy it, I'm sure of that.

How about a little variety. I'm tired of hearing the same track with different lyrics

Los Hermanos Rosario have done it again! They are tried and true hits! My favorite is Rompecintura and you really will do just that if you dance to this record! BOMBA!

On this disk you will find traditional folk songs sung by the Chilean group Los Cuatro Hermanos Silva. I teach Spanish at a community college and my Spanish students enjoyed the songs "Si vas para Chile" and "Yo vendo unos ojos negros." The lyrics are easy to follow and the students loved the two songs mentioned above.
