The warmest voice ever.......2000-04-23

Nana is, from my point of view, the most representative of the best brazilian singers. Her repertoire and the way she sings it is simply extraordinary. Her style, and warm, deep, rich voice are unique and remarkable. This album's songs were carefully chosen, I would say picked to show different composers and styles, being all of them of a very high quality. They go from sophisticated harmonies to more simple compositions,but all of them will hit you right in your heart, even if you don't understand Portuguese.

Correcting a mistake.......1999-12-10

Sorry, but in the earlier review I meant to refer to her '98 CD (year it was issued in Bz) as the one I recall having been chosen as the best of the year.

In my opinion Nana has been for many years Brazil's best singer and interpreter. What a talent! A major Brazilian newspaper chose her '99 CD as the best Brazilian pop CD of the year. This is a much earlier album, and the songs here are excellent. When I think of some of the material that passes as representative of Brazilian music, I just can't help but write to let you know that the works here rank with the best Brazil has to offer. No wonder: there are songs here by Dorival Caymmi(3), A.C. Jobim, Milton Nascimento, Ivan Lins, etc.

Nana's voice takes me to heaven........1998-11-18

I'm glad we have Nana and Caymmi family to compose and sing such beautiful songs, which remindes me a Brazil different from the commercial version.

This was the second album by MPB diva Nana Caymmi, daughter of legendary samba composer Dorival Caymmi. Recorded nearly a decade after her first record, it marks her true emergence as a potent, vital performer, and includes contributions from many of Brazil's most vital songwriters and musicians of the early 1970s. Highly sensitive - One of Nana Caymmi's Best!.......2003-08-13

This was Nana Caymmi's first album after so many years dedicated to her marriage. Seems like she had kept all fire burning to explode in emotion and sensitiveness.

Great contemporary Brazilian songs, great composers like Tom Jobim, Ivan Lins, and Vinicius de Moraes and her father Dorival Caymmi. Guitarrist Toninho Horta's "Branca" is a beautiful song which pays for the album. Also "So Louco" by Dorival Caymmi.

HAUNTINGLY BEAUTIFUL MPB PERFORMANCES.......2005-09-30

Five Stars!! The instantly recognizable Nana Caymmi is superlative! Nana can always be counted upon for great vocal performances, and this CD is no exception. The daughter of singers Dorival Caymmi and Stella Maris and sister of Dori, she possesses an achingly beautiful, deep rich voice that is especially good on moody ballads and will touch your heart in a special way, unlike any other singer.

'Pieces D'Resistance' abound on this CD. She sings one of the best performances of Chico Buarque's "Atras Da Porta" (Behind the Door) that you will ever hear, spurred on tremendously by a spectacular arrangement and full strings. Also of special note on this CD is a wonderful loping performance of Joao Donato's "Ahie" (an uncredited Joao reportedly accompanies Nana on keyboards on this CD along with super guitarist Toninho Horta); "Rosa Morena" (Dark Rose) is pure joy to hear and one can hear how much Nana enjoys singing it. The powerful show stopper "Dora" is achingly evocative of great love. "Pra Voce" is superbly poignant. Are you starting to get the notion that this woman continuously produces POWERFULLY TOUCHING PERFORMANCES? You bet she does!! And of course, there are five of her dad's wonderful compositions. Special kudos to the guitar/keyboard performances which add considerable depth and beauty to these proceedings.

With two Gold Records on her wall and two 'Best Female Singer of the Year' awards on her mantle, Nana should be in everyone's collection. Don't miss this one. I play it over and over. Portuguese is not one of my main languages, but it allows easy transmission of the essential emotion of a song. Considering the fact that she took ten years off to raise her family, we are so lucky that Nana returned to singing. But then, Nana Caymmi was BORN TO SING. Enjoy!! Five Solid Stars."

One of Nana Caymmi's best works.......2003-05-31

A rich, adult, very satisying CD by one of Brasil's great voices, Nana Caymmi. This 15-song CD (CDs in Brasil generally have more tracks than North American CDs, not sure why) includes music to accompany you as you fall in love, spend a rainy evening making love, and for working through a heartbreak. The first song, the title track by Cristóvão Bastos and Aldir Blanc, sets the tone for the CD, with a gentle, mellow groove, a sound best demonstrated in "Meu sonho," "Longe dos olhos," and her musical postcard from the cidade maravilhosa, "Saudade do Rio." "Até o Redentor," the second track, exemplifies the blend of Bahian and carioca influences in Nana's sound, and adds a gorgeous piano accompaniment. "Não se esqueça de mim," one of the most beautiful melodies Ms. Caymmi's voice has ever graced, is a wistful duet with Erasmo Carlos, and it sounds like two voices of experience and wisdom magically joined in melody. "Meu sonho" describes a beautiful dreamlike vision of a Brasilian landscape. This is definately music for dreamers. "Cantiga," with a gentle bossa nova beat and tinkling piano, reminds me of the type of music you'd hear at lounges in trendy neighbourhoods of Rio de Janeiro, and sounds jazzy and urbane. "Chega de tarde" is a torchy, saxophone-flavoured piece, and is followed by "Bolero de neblina," which is powered by a syncopated percussion. "Doralinda" is another duet, this time with Emilio Santiago, and I find Nana's voice is mixed way down and almost lost in the production. The duet is a bit clumsy, and the two don't really take advantage of the harmonic possibilities. The eleventh track, "A cara do espelho," is accompanied by some wonderful guitar strumming. Most of us are familiar with João Gilberto's unforgettable version of the Ary Barroso classic "Pra machucar meu coração," and Nana wisely avoids trying to duplicate that version. Her cover is a bit more up-tempo and the vocal is less sorrowful than in Mr. Gilberto's version, and it suits her perfectly. "Até pensei" is the third duet on the CD, this time with old friend Chico Buarque. The song is all swelling violins and mandolins, and it's great music with which to fall in love. Nana's version of the classic "Fascinação," the 1950s American hit "Fascination," sounds alternatively grand and elegant, and yet somehow sad and intimate. The last track, "Minha nossa senhora," closes the CD quietly and gently. This album is both classic and contemporary, music for thinkers, lovers, or for those who think and love too much.
