5 out of 5 stars something to have.......2007-03-14

These CD's are filled with all the awesome relaxing songs for the evening when you need it. It is just one of those must have items in your CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Music.......2007-02-19

This album was a "try and see" purchase but I love it. It makes great dinner music, great music to drift off to sleep with, or just nice background filler during social events needing a softer tone. It is not all solo piano music if that s what you are after; the other instruments blend very well however and don't challenge the piano playing. It is a piano album after all!

5 out of 5 stars buy now.......2006-09-01

Want to know why I think the piano is the best musical instrument ever invented? Because no matter how the piano is played, it will always sound good. Whether the music is fast, slow, quiet or loud, it ALWAYS delivers with an appealing sound. This is something you need to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2006-02-22

This is a beautiful calming cd. The playing is excellent and the pieces are well chosen.

5 out of 5 stars Aesthetically Pleasing.......2005-09-14

I simply love piano music. If you're looking to relax, enjoy a peaceful time, then you must check out this album. If you truly enjoy piano music, this album is by far one of the best you can purchase.

As it says....it is the "Most Relaxing Piano Album in the World...Ever..." Well, I haven't listened to all piano albums in the world, but I don't need to, this one is just perfect for me, and I think you will agree!

I would say the pianists' are extremely accomplished. At times, I would admit-it's a bit 'spine tingling'!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Spanish Classical Guitar Music.......2005-09-18

As a sampler, this CD is an excellent introduction both to Spanish classical guitar music and to guitarist John Williams.
The music ranges from Renaissance composers (Sanz, Mudarra) and harmonized folk melodies to standard 20th Century works (Rodrigo, Torroba etc).

John Williams is excellent throughout. The CD is also cheap, and can be used either just for enjoyment, or further to explore other recordings by Williams, the classical guitar repertoire, or other classical guitarists.

As a marketing ploy, it is very effective.

For the collector or classical guitar enthusiast, the chief disadvantages of the CD are duplication of other recordings, and that the way at least some of the works on this CD are listed isn't helpful in telling the listener the set(s) to which these pieces belong and how to find them (e.g. "from ______, Op # "). The font listing the titles and track numbers is small and somewhat hard to read.

However, this CD should attract many listeners and enthusiasts both to the classical guitar, the repertoire, and guitarist John Williams - and I'm all for that.

Over 70 minutes playing time.

Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The guitar is an orchestra in miniature!.......2005-02-05

This admirable concept belongs to Hector Berlioz and it must not be a surprise the best guitarrists in the story have in common this trademark.

John Williams has always known the delicate equilibrium between the expresiveness and the glamouer. His impresive technique however is not exposed as his prima edonna. He goes directly to the soul of the composer, melts in his spirit and let the music sharp the qith eloquent conviction the composer's demanded atmosphere.

From Granados to Albeniz, from Rodrigo to Agustin Barrios - El indio Mangore -, from Moreno Torroba to Ponce , you will find the warmth, the passion and the Midas touch of this golden guitarrist.

5 out of 5 stars GUITAR MAJESTY.......2004-12-21

John Williams is a true Guitar virtuoso. His repetoire is very extensive and I use his music in my office while I work at my daily office duties. This album is a must for all guitar enthusiasts old or young.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet, sweet music, an essential addition to your collection.......2004-12-07

I originally bought this album three years ago, looking for a good introduction to Spanish guitar music. And this one fits that need perfectly. I still listen to and enjoy it today. I play this for guests at happy hour or dinner for a relaxed atmosphere. At Amazon's current price, this is a great value.

5 out of 5 stars A True Classic.......2004-01-26

This album/cd is extraordinary. All the songs are gorgeous and exciting to listen to. John Williams' interpretation and technique are perfect. After 22 years of listening to it, I still enjoy and appreciate it more every time. I love giving it as a gift.

4 out of 5 stars Best of the the popular Copland..........2004-12-26

Here's a great introduction to the popular music of Aaron Copland. When "Fanfare for the Common Man" begins, sparks of recognition will fly for most listeners. This song has been everywhere: presidential inaugurations, the olympics, commercials, movies, etc. Some flatten it as hopelessly clichéd, while others find it moving and inspiring. Copland also reprised it in the finale of his Third Symphony. Arguably Copland's most famous piece, "Appalachian Spring" closes the CD. In between, more great Copland: excerpts from 'Rodeo' (apparently the beef lobby has appropriated "Hoe-Down" as one of their themes); a great vocal rendition of "Simple Gifts" and a large chunk of another of Copland's best known works: "Billy the Kid". The only confusing piece is the "Variations on a Shaker Hymn" from Appalachian Spring when the entire Appalachian Spring is already included. Seems slightly redundant.

Though most of the pieces on this CD were written in the 1930s and 1940s, they tend to evoke the old west. With titles such as "Rodeo" and "Billy the Kid" this shouldn't surprise too many people.

Copland went on to compose more dissonant and twelve tone compositions later on in his career. These obviously weren't as popular with the public in general as the pieces on this CD. Nonetheless, if this disc whets the appetite, a foray into Copland's less popular works will yield much. It will help to expose the totality of Copland's output. This disc only represents a small portion of his work. Regardless, this disc is a great starting point for getting to know one of the United States' best known composers of the twentieth century.

4 out of 5 stars A Great American Album.......2004-02-13

This is a great album representing true patriotic American music. Songs like "Hoe-Down" are lively and energetic and give rememberance to what one can imagine as the true American spirit.

5 out of 5 stars Must have this one..........2002-09-17

I like all types of music, I wanted this album because I liked the song "RODEO" that is used on the beef commercials. This CD has made me into a Copland fan. It has many great songs. If you want a CD that says "I am an American." This is it. I am sending copies to a friend in Bombay and Tel Aviv. This is who I am put to music.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, sensitive playing...........2003-11-02

Ah, reader, consider this album. I have been listening to Bayless music for years, from Bach Meets the Beatles to his crazy happy birthday album in a dozen styles (Stravinsky's Rite of Birthday, a favorite), but this one has something special going on. The playing is so beautifully, and sensitively played that one is really swept away by the original movie tune, interwound with a classical piece, so seamless and amazing. One of my all-time favorite albums.

5 out of 5 stars John Bayless is awesome.......2003-10-13

He's such a great talent, I was lucky enough to meet him almost 2 years ago. I got this CD autographed! :) He was such a nice person and performed so well on the stage. Buy this album, it's really awesome!

5 out of 5 stars The One CD in My Collection I Never Tire of Listening To.......2001-03-24

John Bayless had a vision for this album---to combine the most beautiful classical pieces along with the most romantic and engaging movie themes of all time. The arrangements and the way in which he weaves the varous pieces together, sometimes playing both themes simultaneously, are incredible. They lift you up and carry you away. The various instrumental additions (such as the guitar in track 2, drums in track 6, strings in track 5, the sound of the wind in track 4) add just the right touch---lightly sprinkled in when needed. As a professional pianist myself, I also appreciate his considerable technique and the emotion with which he infuses his music. Anyone who likes classical music and movies should own this CD. Anyone who has friends who like classical music and movies should purchase this CD for them. They will love you for it. It is my favorite CD. I never tire of listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous arrangements. Very dramatic and melodic........1999-11-16

Don't be scared off by the "clown-like" picture on the cover. This album, by a true piano virtuoso/arranger, blends familiar movie and light classical melodies together into unique arrangements. Every time it's been on while I have guests, someone always asks "What's that beautiful music?"

3 out of 5 stars El Loco isn't a classic but good........2006-09-26

After reading a fellow reviewer report I have to disagree with him/her.This album was released before Eliminator. This one was released in 81,Eliminator was in 83.This album has a new wave sound like so many albums from this time frame.I admit it was quickly put together due to the record company pushing for a hit.Cheap Sunglasses was huge for them in the 70's.Although its not a commercial succsess like Eliminator[thanks to mtv videos of those girls} their careers took off.El Loco isn't a classic album but its fun for entertainment purpose.

1 out of 5 stars Garbage Remix With 80's Gimmickry.......2006-03-07

As part of an attempt to capitalize on the success of their Eliminator sound, ZZ Top decided to go back into the studio and remix and also re-record parts of their first 6 albums thinking it would make them more money and entice fans of their newer sound to go back and buy their earlier records. Well guess what, in the process their older fans who were used to the original versions on the old cassettes and albums were shocked when they listened to any of these first generation CD releases. They heard bogus reverbed drums, and entire sections of both music and vocals re-recorded. Talk about tarnishing the legacy of a great band's output. Well someone finally wised up and now at least Tres Hombres and Fandango are now available in original mix, remastered form. So stay away from this trash and wait for the entire back catalog to be released in it's original mix, remastered form on CD.

5 out of 5 stars ZZ TOP'S PEAK ALBUM**1981** GET IT WITH DEGUELLO!.......2005-09-20

In 1979 ZZ TOP did what I consider to be their first masterpeice DEGUELLO.

Two years later they did this one. Almost as good in some ways and even actually better in others this album is equally a classic.

Still got the fuzzy, raw blues feel going, only here we start mixing in a few synths that would evntually take over on the next album.

HERE though they compliment the tracks very well and work throughout the whole album. THIS WHOLE THING IS WORTH EVERY DIME but my most favorites are

TUBE SNAKE BOOGIE: perhaps my favorite of all time, tied with 79's BAD-NATIONWIDE.
TEN FOOT POLE: very cool
PEARL NECKLACE: probably the most eighties sounding track but still good.

I recommend this and the previous over all other ZZ TOPS even any greatest hits you may find. The two are sleazy, raw, and a whole ton of fun. DEFINATLEY GET BOTH!

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS RECORD!!.......2005-05-29

Never being a "serious fan" of ZZ TOP, other than seeing their now familiar series of videos on MTV in the mid- Eighties, I never took the plunge and purchased a full length album from these legendary Texas rockers until a few years ago. A friend of mine turned me on to this cassette about ten years ago and I copied it, loving all the songs. Seriously fun, boogie-woogie blues, rockers, a few ballads, even a dance song ( the middle part of "Heaven Hell or Houston" has a great dance beat as well as some incrdeible guitar playing. ) ZZ TOP purists would probably hate me for saying this, but I think it's their best overall album ( I have since purchased quite a few of their discs. ) Oddly enough, my favourite track on this album is the most unconventional, most "this doesn't sound like ZZ TOP" song "Groovie Little Hippie Pad" starts with a few synth squiggles, then blasts off with a herky jerky rhythm and drum machine patterns that quite frankly wouldn't have sounded out of place on the first B-52's album ( and to me, that's not a bad thing.) Finally, a hard rocking album you can dance to. Great at parties, there's something here for literally everyone.

5 out of 5 stars El Fantastico!.......2004-05-09

Wondering what they're doing in those greasy overalls shown on the cover? They were working very hard on another sweet album!

ZZ sounds more contemporary on this album than they ever had before, while at the same time throwing down some funky blues (Tube Snake Boogie, Don't Be Cruel), sweet 70's country-flavored ballads (Leila, It's So Hard), and a couple truly bizarre, genius tracks (10 Foot Pole, Heaven Hell or Houston).

As with Tejas, Billy's tones are more frequently in the Strat realm than the fat Les Paul territory he is widely known for. He doesn't hold back on this one, slingling his gun with great zeal. Tube Snake, Don't Be Cruel, and Heaven, Hell or Houston all feature some of his sweetest solo work, in my opinion.

Out of my five star rating I give one star to each of these tracks:

*Tube Snake
*10 Foot Pole
*Leila
*Don't Be Cruel
*It's So Hard
*Heaven, Hell or Houston

Whoops, that's 6 stars. It's just a sweet thing!

5 out of 5 stars A great and daring mix of pieces performed by the best in the business!.......2006-10-16

I must agree with the prior review - there are SO many classical piano compilations that have the same overplayed Romantic-era pieces on them - and usually not terrific performances of them at that. Decca put together the opposite of your average "piano for relaxation" collection here. I'll just make a quick list of why this is better than the rest - an atypical review for me, but necessary to point out why this album stands far above what's generally a lousy genre of compilation CDs.

-The first CD is generally Romantic-period and prior music and progresses in roughly chronological order. The second is composed of primarily 20th century pieces - sure, the order is not totally faithful on either CD, but it is refreshing to see a collection arranged so that one can literally listen to the trends in piano composition grow and fade.

-Decca chose top-notch pianists, many of whom are widely regarded as the supreme interpreters of Composer X. For this reason, you have a very simple piece like Grieg's Notturno played with an emotional urgency and crystal clarity you're unlikely to hear from a lesser pianist than Emil Gilels, or a very complex, often banged-out piece like Prokofiev's Toccata navigated fearlessly by the Argentine goddess of piano, Martha Argerich.

-They showed some guts in their choice of pieces. Sure, no Schoenberg appears here, but this is not your typical conservative don't-rock-the-boat piano collection. Bartok's aggressive, relentless Allegro Barbaro pairs wonderfully with the Ravel and Prokofiev toccatas on either side of it on disc 2; a quick tour of Rachmaninoff's Preludes follows an incredible rendition of Balakirev's harrowingly difficult Islamey. One of the most beautiful piano works ever composed - and ignored by 99% of piano music compilers - makes an appearance in the middle of disc 2: Granados's Goyescas (Quejas, o la maja y el ruiseñor), an infinitely subtle and sublime - and modern twist on the late Romantic/Impressionistic piano tradition - handled impeccably by the composer's compatriot and student Alicia de Larrocha.

I haven't said quite enough about CD 1 - sure, their choices of Chopin, Schubert, and Liszt works are good as well. But I'm showing where my heart lies in solo classical piano - impressionists and early 20th century composers, I feel, are as good as it gets. Für Elise makes its token appearance, but even it seems well contextualized on the first CD between the immortal Adagio of the Moonlight Sonata and Chopin's delightfully simple Nocturne in E Flat, which immediately recalls Roman Polanski's "The Pianist" for those who have seen it.

In short, CD 1 and 2 share the unique qualities of a careful yet daring selection of piano pieces played by indisputable masters of the instrument. If CD1 is good as gold, then CD2 is platinum. Simply amazing. Thanks Decca!

5 out of 5 stars Pure.......2004-06-12

This album has it all, believe it or not. There are loads of cheesy #1 blah blah albums that are horridly popular. Sure, there are many well-known pieces on this, such as Alla Turca, the Adagio Sostenuto of the Moonlight, Fur Elise and the Minute Waltz. But almost everything else is relatively unheard of outside of the closely knit piano community.

That said, these CD's opened my eyes to some of the greatest piano works of all time, those including: Schubert Impromptu in A-flat, Rondo Capriccioso, Liszt's Liebestraum, Liszt's second Hungarian Rhapsody, Islamey, all three Rachmaninoff preludes, Granados' Goyescas, and Prokofiev's Toccata in C. I have begun learning a good many of these pieces as a result.

This set will not dissapoint. Do yourself a favor and buy it.

5 out of 5 stars The Only Demonstration Disc You'll Ever Need.......2006-06-10

Well, I suppose that depends on the type of music you're testing your equipment for. However, go to almost any online discussion of audio equipment, particularly subwoofers, and you'll come across this disc. Sure, most of the other reviewers mention the sound effects in less than glowing terms. It remains though that this disc contains some of the crazy lowest signals one can buy on disc. The T rex footsteps shake the windows in my house despite being below my hearing range with my Velodyne 12" sub. Incredible stuff. And the glass shattering sound effects in the Terminator theme can melt your tweeters too if turned up too loud. Don't take yourself too seriously for a few minutes and enjoy the noise!
Beyond that, musically this is one of the Cincinatti Pops' finest soundtrack collections. Perhaps the best. Almost all of their recordings are sonically of the highest quality (Copland: Music of America won a Grammy for best engineering), but all too often in recent years the releases have not met the standard of this album. Arrangers that don't begin to care what the composer's intent was or tacking on pre-fab endings are the worst offenders, but most of the selections here meet or exceed the quality of the original soundtracks. All around, a great soundtrack collection.

5 out of 5 stars An Adventure For Your Ears.......2004-06-01

The Cincinnati Pops do an excellent job of faithfully reproducing movie soundtracks and this album is a perfect example. In fact after listening to this CD a few times, I tracked down some of the original soundtracks because I enjoyed the selections on here, such as the "El Cid" music and "Jurrasic Park." I also really enjoyed the music from "Henry V" "Robin Hood,"and "Hunt for Red October." The different tracks go together surprisingly well, like many of the pops other thematic CD's. While it might be helpful to have seen some of the movies the soundtracks come from, it is not crucial. The added soundeffects are a little gimmicky, but fairly short and on seperate tracks, so they can be skipped. If you enjoy movie soundtracks, this is a great investment.

5 out of 5 stars Blows Away All Other Such Compilations!.......2003-04-02

"Caution: Digital Sound Effects of high levels with intrasonic frequencies to 5 Hz. Please establish safe playback levels before playing tracks [3], [5], [19], [20], and [21]. Excessive playback levels could result in damage to equipment."

The above quote is found prominantly on the back cover and is a warning not to be taken lightly. The respective tracks are awesome and should be played, as well as listened to, with great care.

A 20-bit digital recording that is perfect for surround-sound systems, "The Great Fantasy Adventure Album" is a wonder for fans of the sci-fi/fantasy film genre. Highlighting some truly landmark films, the 1994 release showcases compositions from the legends of past and contemporary film scoring. Themes from the likes of Rosza, Williams, Horner, Herrmann, and Elfman are grandiosely featured here.

The best cuts are Goldsmith's "Total Recall: Main Title", "Conan the Barbarian: Anvil of Crom" (Poledouris), and Brad Fiedel's "Terminator: Theme".

Upon hearing this trio, chills will not just go up the spine but will permeate every ounce of one's body

5 out of 5 stars The perfect movie theme collection.......2000-08-16

I have a good number of Kunzel CDs, but this one could easily be called "Mark's Favorite Movie Themes." It doesn't matter that I have many of these repeated on other CDs; it saved me the trouble of having to burn my own 'faves' disc. It's good to see Basil Polodouris' "Conan" and "Red October" themes, he's often overlooked as a film composer, in my book, and regardless what one might think of the movie, the Conan score is still probably the best thing he's ever done. And the hard-to-find "Terminator" theme is hard NOT to listen to, with its highly unusual rythmic motif. I enjoy all the music selections, but having James Horner's sublime theme from "The Rocketeer" was well worth the price of the CD by itself. This is what a movie themes CD should be, and it helps that I happen to like Kunzel's choice of selections, for once. The sound effects that typically accompany these CDs are generally annoying, but I like the sonar segue into "Red October," and the T-Rex roar that precedes "Jurassic Park" is useful for scaring kids at Halloween.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best cd I have ever bought.......1999-10-27

No words can compare how remarkable this cd is. Combined with incredible sound quality, this cd will twist and turn you emotions with every single score. i can honestly say that this disc is the perfect relaxation and energizing thing ever.

Chrissie Hynde is back to kick some ass. ¡Viva el Amor!, the Pretenders' first studio album since 1994's Last of the Independents, provides a reading on the singer's state of mind and relationships. Hynde and company--stalwart drummer Martin Chambers and an assortment of complementary players--take the energy level to breathtaking heights, especially on "Legalise Me," which matches Jeff Beck's incendiary guitar work against our heroine's rapid-fire delivery. Hynde shows that she can still sneer with the best of them on "Popstar," her biting send-up of late-'90s girl singers (and reportedly a roman à clef aimed in part at Patsy Kensit, who was once married to Hynde's former husband, Simple Minds' Jim Kerr). "Baby's Breath" skewers a young lover and showcases her sangfroid vocals at their chilling best. Hynde pours on more vitriol in "Biker," the record's final cut, which pairs steel-hard lyrics with an incongruously sweet string section. Nearly two decades after the release of the Pretenders' landmark debut, the Great Pretender is still feeling feisty. --Jaan Uhelszki

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Viva Los Pretenders.......2006-08-20

It's too bad the Pretenders aren't still tops of the pops, for this unheralded gem should rank with among their best work. It is certainly the most varied. Chrissie Hynde has always been great for mixing toughness and tenderness. Here she's no different. Her rock and pop sensibilities are certainly also intact.

Chrissie and company show more adeptness here than their fine work 'Last of the Independents'. Experience with the same players brings out the best in the helmswoman and her able band. Here they're power pop perfect on "Human" and "Baby's Breath". Yet, we get both sides of the Chrissie Hynde coin: The former shows her at her most vulnerable, and the latter demonstrates she's not one to be taken lightly. "Who's Who" meets both character traits with a delivery that's nearly pop/rock perfect and more pleasing. There's at least one song with an edginess not appearing anywhere else: "Dragway 42," which adapts alternative like the band invented it. The album almost could be defined as having a Pretenders' "wall of sound," but they don't have the complacency to become formula, either. "Do It One More Time" is a mixed moment. Besides being a hard rock song, it starts with torch nightclubbiness that even increases the eclecticism of this effort. It is substantial, even if Hynde's voice uncharacteristically falters in the refrain. Then, there are spare moments that are accentuated. "My Favorite Samurai" has much more than what the surface conveys (musically, anyway). "Biker," however, is a fine anthem finale that is as bottom line musically as it is lyrically. Thoughtful, like the lead songstress, it punctuates all the observations of the good and bad in a love life, then figures out an ideal to follow up on. If it doesn't seem varied and engaging by now, then "Pop Star" and the athletic "Legalise Me" should stand up as more than exercises in rock and roll longevity.

Maybe, "They don't make 'em like they used to..." as she sings on her acerbic "Pop Star," but for the lucky few who have stayed with The Pretenders have been rewarded by a continuing update of Hynde and Co. as they continue to give it to us straight.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent album.......2004-07-02

I've been listening to the Pretenders since the beginning. I still think their debut is on a different level from anything else they've recorded, but otherwise this is my favorite. After years of session musicians and changes in style, the Pretenders sound like a cohesive rock band again on this album. The songs are all good and some ("Popstar", "Legalize Me") are first rate.

4 out of 5 stars Their best since "Packed".......2003-11-06

This CD is, like most later Pretenders material, both a treat and a disappointment. Some reviews here call it their best recording since "Learning to Crawl". I wouldn't go that far, but it is certainly their best since "Packed". The music may be more tightly played or better produced than anything since "Learning to Crawl", but it lacks the consistency of "Packed", both in quality and in its variety of musical styles. There seem to be divergent opinions here as to which songs are best, but a loose consensus that there are several songs you'll enjoy and several you won't. Personally, I think "Popstar", "From The Heart Down", "Baby's Breath", and "One More Time" are the only keepers, but they're enough to make me glad I bought this CD.

"Popstar" is a catchy pop song with great lyrical and musical hooks that make for a good listen, but the theme is of limited interest, and when you take Chrissie Hynde's magnificent ability to be scathing and put it behind accusing someone of eating red meat, a great talent is being wasted a bit. "Human" is a light pop song reminiscent of songs on "Packed". "From the Heart Down" is a gorgeous slow love song that's among her best. The CD is largely downhill from there. "Nails in the Road" is a musically pleasing slow rocker, with well-written verses, but the nails-in-the-road metaphor in the chorus borders on silly, the "tires about to explode" line perhaps crossing the border. "Who's Who" is bubblegum-light pop, and Chrissie does such songs well, e.g. "Don't Get Me Wrong". The bitter lyrics here just don't match the sweet sound. "Dragway 4z" is a mediocre slow rocker with modal moments that faintly echo the beautiful "Tradition of Love". (This is not an endorsement of the disappointing "Get Close"; several songs on this CD are just reminiscent of songs on that one).

"Baby's Breath" is one of the better songs here, with a catchy chorus and a metaphor that does work well. The verses are weaker, and this is another enjoyable but disposable pop song that is almost too clever. Like several other reviewers, I'd say that's a weakness of many of the songs here - they sometimes seem overly crafted, overly clever. "One More Time" is a 60's-style soul song reminiscent of "Chill Factor". I agree with the reviewer who singles this one out for amazingly passionate singing, with Ms. Hynde playing it much safer on the other tracks. "Legalise Me" is catchy and captures a bit of the early Pretenders sound, but the Amazon review saying energy levels are taken to "breathtaking heights" seems way over the top; those heights were left behind 20 years ago, and that's OK - it would be foolish to try to reach for them at age 50. I largely agree with a reviewer who felt the final 3 songs could have been left off entirely. "Samurai" is very slow, pretty 80s pop with mediocre lyrics and music. I could have done without the Pretenders accompanied by accordion on "Rabo de Nube", or at least would have preferred the song in a different context - Chrissie Hynde doing an Astrid Gilberto-style album might be pleasant enough, but this song really doesn't fit here. I can't decide about "Biker"; it sounds alternately like an embarrassingly bad cliche or a great closing to me, usually the former.

Hynde and her band are skillful and crafstmanlike on this CD, but are often recycling old sounds and hooks to make new and lesser songs that are enjoyable but ultimately forgettable. There are rare artists who manage to re-invent themselves in interesting ways on and off for decades, many who degenerate into self-parody or oldies bands, and then there are those like Hynde who are workmanlike, continue to create, and continue to please with the same sort of music, relying heavily on their early material. If you want to hear Chrissie Hynde doing new songs in great vocal form, no longer trying to sound like she's 30, you'll likely enjoy "Viva El Amor". If you're looking for truly great new songs or sounds, or haven't been satisfied by other Pretenders albums since the early 80s, "Viva El Amor" may not be for you. This is no "Pretenders" or "Learning to Crawl", it's just Chrissie Hynde making some good music.

2 out of 5 stars 4 good songs, some mediocre ones and some bad ones.......2003-10-30

This is the Pretenders seventh studio album. It was released in 1999. It has 12 tracks and is 45 minutes long. The songs are 3 to 5 minutes long. Sound quality is very good. The mix and sound are basic middle of the road rock.

Jeff Beck plays guitar on this CD. His presence is felt on some of the tracks. But, for the rest of the CD, it could be anyone on guitar.

This CD is similar to everyone the Pretenders have done since Learning to Crawl. A lot of short songs in a pop/rock tradition. Most of them contain a cute illusionary turn of a phrase (Nails in The Road). She puts enough of these songs on an album that some hit and some miss.

There are 4 very good songs on this album. I think some people immediately like this CD because it starts out so well with the song Popstar. The other good songs include Dragway 4Z and Legalise Me. The songs have the emotion and energy that makes the Pretenders so good.

The bad songs are pedistrian pop songs trying to find a clever hook. These include Baby's Breath (Why did you send me flowers/save them for someone's death/it's just baby's breath) and Nails in the Road (Everytime I try to get close to you/you throw nails in the road).

The CD ends up with the ridiculous Biker. She sings "You bring The Biker out in Me", but it is to a lush, mushy, heavily orchestrated tune. It is more like someone brought out the mother in her. If she is going to sing about being a biker, it should be to rough, energetic rock.

The good songs are in the 4 star category. There just aren't enough of them. Last of the Independents is a much better CD.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasant Sounds.......2001-03-23

After several plays through, I found this collection of songs to one of the best releases of 1999. The opening song (Popstar) sets the pace for the whole record. It made me miss a good old rock and roll pop song absent from today's radio. The song even takes a slam at everything that is wrong with the music industry today. Chrissie Hynde has one of the best rock and roll voices the industry has ever heard. "One More Time" showcases her talents. I found this album much more accessible than "Last of the Independents". Her ensemble is tight. Musically, you will find a little bit of everything here..One in which I feel is a strength for the band. Chrissie Hynde has matured as a songwriter. You won't find teenage angst in this record. I am excited about the future of the Pretenders after listening to this album. Should this be their swan song, it is a good way to go out. Only fans will miss the sounds of the Pretenders.

4 out of 5 stars A good mix.......2006-11-11

A good collection for someone fairly new to classical guitar. I have over 300 guitar recordings, but I still enjoyed this CD - a good one on the road, for example. Nice pieces and performances.

5 out of 5 stars Great music CD collection for guitar music listeners.......2002-03-15

I really understand that there's no music CD could fulfill our satisfaction of music. But it does. I can find most of my favorite guitar classical songs here, and it's very nice listening them: Cavatina (from the Deer Hunter), Romance D'Amour, Recuerdos de la Alhambra, etc. I have several favorites not included in this album: Capricho Arabe-Lagrima-Adelita, and lucky me I have them on my other CDs. Go get this CD!! By buying this 1 CD, you'll have more than half of classical guitars you've ever wanted!

5 out of 5 stars This is a really good choice for your morning music CD.......2001-11-08

There is something about classical guitar that is just so appropriate to background morning music as "Mad About Guitars" will quickly prove to you. Like most people, I am not overly familiar with classical guitar pieces; once you get past "Granada" I certainly could not name another work that I would expect to hear on such an album. The only other familiar pieces are "Greensleeves" and "Georgia on My Mind," and, yes, now that I think of it "Greensleeves" is a guitar piece, but then this album concludes with Bach's Fugue in G. So this collection is certainly going to broaden your horizons in terms of classical guitar. You will also come away with a great appreciation for Giran Sillscher, who plays the guitar on two-thirds of the selections. In fact, "Portrait," was written for Sillscher by Stanley Myers, which is certainly a nice testimonial to his skill. If you have a CD player in your alarm clock, this is an excellent choice for finding a happy home therein.

5 out of 5 stars Great music played by great musicians.......2000-03-20

I think this CD is the best compilation of classical guitar music that's out there. Deutsche Grammophon has done a great job of picking the best pieces and the best players. Buy this CD!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Essential listening for the guitar lover.......2006-02-11

Pepe Romero's tribute to his late father Celedonio is not only a beautiful celebration of the life of one of the most important guitarists ever, but a great triumph simply on the merits of the pieces presented and the performances thereof. Of particular interest are the heartfelt renderings of transcriptions of piano works by Schumann, Brahms, Schubert and Chopin; while the Romero family has always taken pains to make sure the world has the opportunity to enjoy the riches of the Spanish guitar repetoire, Pepe's beautiful performances of the transcriptions referred to above allow him to display the full breadth of his musical understanding. Wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2001-02-17

I can't add too much to what as already been said in praise of this wonderful CD. Pepe is brilliant. I recently saw him in concert and his confidence with the instrument blew me away. I have never seen such confident, fluid, beautiful movement on the classical guitar. And it comes out in the music.

Emotionally stunning, technically flawless, Pepe is the best and this is my favorite classical guitar record.

5 out of 5 stars For the love of a father, and of the music they shared.......2000-01-25

This CD, a collection of songs that Pepe Romero learned from and shared with his father, is a finely, wonderfully, lovingly crafted work evoking in the listener the emotions that the music brings to Mr. Romero. They are all songs played not as displays of technical skill, though the skill is impressive, but as celebrations of the joy and love that music and relationships can bring. Ranging from pieces by Bach to Pepe's father, Celedonio, there isn't a clinker in the bunch, and much to be savored sweetly on a sunny morning with a coffee in hand.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest guitarist in the world. This CD again shows why!.......1999-03-21

An inspiring, emotional tribute of repertory taught to Pepe Romero by his late father, Celedonio, who himself was an incredible guitarist and composer. Flawless technique, combined with Spanish heart and soul, set a standard for all other guitarists to emulate. Repertory ranges from beginning guitar pieces to flamenco-inspired pieces by his father. Also includes everything from Bach, Brahms, and Chopin to Spanish composer Moreno Torroba.

5 out of 5 stars His best solo CD yet!.......1999-03-21

Pepe Romero is perhaps the most gifted guitarist living today, and it shows with this CD. A long time fan, I'm a little biased, but I would absolutely recommend this CD to any fan of the classic guitar. And it has a great and unusual variety of music. Great for beginning listeners.
