5 out of 5 stars The best of latin music through Domingo's voice.......1999-08-10

This CD goes wherever I go, it is with no doubt, the queen of my collection. Medleys are wonderfully orchestrated and arranged and every song makes you travel anywhere between Mexico and Buenos Aires. Here, Domingo's voice is more like a musical instrument than anything else and each song you'll discover a new instrument. Honestly, I would personally award it six stars.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Latin American tunes beautifully sung and produced,.......1998-12-11

Domingo's love for traditional Latin American music shines throughout this CD. A selection of great "standards", beautifully arranged and recorded by one of the world's great voices. "De Mexico a Buenos Aires," written by Domingo's son is the one original song on the recording and is one of many highlights here. I have listenned to this CD countless times over the past two years and it remains a delight.

5 out of 5 stars Spirited playing of fine compositions.......2007-07-07

This Revueltas anthology is very well played by first class orchestras. The selections by Mata and de la Fuente are particularly played with spirit and verve.

5 out of 5 stars Magical Compositions Brilliantly Performed.......2007-05-03

If you enjoy Bartok & Stravinsky, you will adore Revueltas. Among the 15 works are two versions of sensemaya plus Cuauhnahuac and La Noche de los Mayas, all richly evocative of the ancient Mayan culture which underlies that of Mexico - bold tributes to proud traditions not unlike the musical paintings of the Caucasus peoples rendered by Khachaturian. The music of Revueltas deserves much wider performance in the world, but probably will not be often heard due to its technical complexity and the need for specialized native instruments for some of the passages. At least Leopold Stokowski recognized the brilliance of this spectacular work.

5 out of 5 stars Stokowski's Sensemaya.......2005-10-10

Great, great release. One of the reviews here (by "127") said that the Stokowski version of Sensemaya was interesting "historically but not musically" and I just wanted to strongly disagree with that. Leopold Stokowski has the orchestra playing in a different time-signature than the composer wrote! The piece is written mostly in 7 but this performance seems to have put the whole thing into 4 (it's probably more complicated than that but you get the idea) and the resulting performance is even more hectic and bombastic than the other recorded version of Sensemaya on the same CD. I don't know why Stokowski did this, but this performance is the most unique I've heard (of the piece.) Whether or not this is a "good" thing I don't want to get into but the recording is definitely very interesting and worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars A Compendium of Revueltas Works.......2003-04-09

Unlike many people I think, I've been a fan of Revueltas since I was quite young...I first heard Sensemaya at the age of 12 and was blown away. Unfortunately, for years most of his music was rather hard to find...darn near impossible actually. However, the composer has recently picked up a number of higher profile champions (including Esa Pekka Salonen) and a spate of rereleases during his Centennial a few years ago. Such a rediscover is long overdue!

This current CD is part of the Centennial celebration of Revueltas. It consists of a compilation of orchestral recordings by Eduardo Mata, chamber recordings by David Aetherton and the Jalapa Orquestra Sinfonica under Herrara de la Fuente. The results are quite stunning, with enough material to keep you listening for quite some time!

The first CD contains exclusively orchestral music under the baton of Maestro Mata. This is prime stuff indeed. The CD begins with Revueltas' most renowned piece, Sensemaya, a dense, barbaric orchestral fantasy inspired by a Cuban poem that details a traditional snake-killing ceremony in the Santeria religion. The piece is dominated by short pithy melodic statements which are gradually layered over each other to create greater and greater tension. The result is deeply compelling, Stravinsky's Rite is combined with Varese's Arcana...with native Mexican rhythms and instruments thrown in.

The other works on the album are also extremely compelling. They can be broken down into abstract orchestral works, chamber pieces and music for film. In addition, Revueltas shows two definate sides, one is the convinced modernist, who shows a lot in common with Varese, and even Scriabin. The best work in this vein is the Danza geometrica (and it's chamber version Planos). The other big vein is the "nationalistic" vein, of which Revueltas was a greater exponent than his compatriot Chavez. Many works on this CD, Itinerios, Homage to Garcia Lorca, and others display a sense of wild abandon present in traditional fiestas. And yet, even here, Revueltas is a formalist and modernist, treating his material less as color and more as another structural element.

The other really wonderful work on this disc is La Noche de los Mayas. Culled from a film score, this is beautifully written film music and quite ahead of it's time. It's not hard to imagine these Revueltas strains as an inspiration to Bernard Herrmann, Elmer Bernstein and the like. The work is structured as a large symphony, dominated by a broad, tonal but dissonant theme in the brass. There is a wealth of detail in this work that I come back to over and over.

Much of this material has very little competition. The chamber works have been basically neglected on CD and many of the orchestral works are only available on this disc. Sensemaya has significant competition however. Salonen has done a really wonderful disc of this material, which also includes a great reading of Noche. Bernstein has perhaps the best reading of Sensemaya available on his Latin American Fiesta album (which also includes a wonderful rendition of Chavez' Sinfonia India)But Mata's reading is nearly as good as Bernstein and just as good as Salonen. Overall, for breadth and depth of music covered, this is a superlative disc and the one to get.

5 out of 5 stars Abstract but deep........2003-02-05

I've got this cd when I first heard of this composer. He is the biggest composer that Mexico has had to offer to the classical music scene. Mexico has a variety of notable composers such as Chavez but none of them match Revueltas impact on the scene.

This cd pretty much has all of Revueltas' major works including his most known one: Sensemaya. That piece has been conducted by Bernstein and Stowkowski with the latter being on this disc. There is two performances of Sensemaya which includes the one mentioned above and a new version.

The best piece I believe is Janitzio. If you are Mexican you will be reminded of Mexican big bands because Revueltas incorporated the sound into this piece as well as imitations of a Mariachi band. It is a very abstract piece but very remenicent of Mexico. Excellent cd as a whole.
The cd includes a booklet with information on Revueltas and the pieces on this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome guitar work.......2007-01-12

Parkening sets the standard for others to compare to. Enjoyable tribute to Segovia. The type of guitar mastery that one can relax to after a hard days work. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars Have been loving this for over ten years!!.......2003-09-26

I bought this cassette over ten years ago (1992) when I started taking classical guitar lessons. Would listen to it on the way home from work, then had a baby nine years ago and have used it for lullaby music (works like a charm) for afternoon naps and nighttime. Still listen to it in the car when the kids fight and they mellow out instantly.

Finally buying it on CD because I think I wore a spot out on the cassette! I have listened to this masterpiece at least a thousand times and have never, ever tired of this most excellent work of art.

If you are a classical guitar fan, you will absolutely adore every single note played on this album/CD. I promise!! :)

5 out of 5 stars sonic rapture..........2003-06-03

If anyone knows of a better sonically intoxicating cd than this please let me know. Possibly only Julian Bream's unreal 1982 Granados and Albeniz cd would top this one for me. Anyway just thought I would pass this thought along to anyone who may visit here. The tone is absolutely magical on this cd. This is the cd to listen to at night to chill out and get mellow while being enchanted to the max. Peace. I must go on... the tone, the tone. My god the tone.

5 out of 5 stars Not just a tribute.......2001-07-31

Parkening shows how much he learned from Segovia. I have many of these pieces played by the Master. Parkening plays with a similar timbre, simlar dynamics and with a musicality just as deep as Segovia's. IF you like classical guitar you should own this one.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, relaxing music.......2001-01-27

This cd will spend much time on my player. It is so lively, yet comforting music to listen to.

Parkening provides wonderful tribute to Segovia with Spanish compositions especially loved by the master, even some of them performed on one his Segovia's guitars.

For the classical guitar enthusiast, or just someone looking for that refreshing guitar music we here on the FM, this is a fine selection.

5 out of 5 stars Ebullient and multi-cultural!.......2002-11-17

A terrific recording by the Waverly Consort! Framed by differing arrangements of the Italian song "Ayo visto lo mappamundi" (I have seen the world map), the selections on this CD take the listener through Italy, Moorish Spain, the court of Ferdinand and Isabella, the harsh reality of the expelled Spanish Jews, and finally to the new world, where the thrill of discovery for the Spaniards was countered by the sorrow of the subjugated and slaughtered natives. The Moorish and Sephardic numbers are full of exotic eastern flair, enhanced by George Mgrdichian's sultry oud playing. Other instruments used include viol, recorder, lute, harp, gemshorn, organetto, citole, vihuela, hurdy-gurdy, saz, vielle, kemence, sacbut, shawm, flute, panpipes, cornamuse, dumbek and claves. The fine instrumentalists are complimented by a sextet of clear-voiced vocalists--two sopranos, countertenor, two tenors and bass, performing both as soloists and together. This richly varied program, arranged and selected by Kay and Michael Jaffee, has something for everyone, and all of it well done! For more music of early Spain, check out also the releases of Hesperion XX, Ensemble Accentus, and the CD "Los Ministriles: Spanish Renaissance Music" by Piffaro, the Renaissance Band.

5 out of 5 stars Stands Alone in My Collection.......2002-05-21

I own hundreds of albums, but nothing else like this one. Of all the albums I own, I particularly want to write about this little-known gem.

The premise of this album is to capture and present the mentality and mood throughout Europe during that time as shown through its music. And it succeeds!

This album is fantastic. I've owned it for years, and yet I still listen to it often. Together with a well written insert that tells the stories behind each piece, and the political backdrop behind each one, it takes you through the sense of wonder, fear and hope, that people felt at a time when the strange new world beyond the European continent was suddenly opening up to them, both foreboding and alluring.

It touches also upon several of the age-of-discovery issues, including religious conflicts with other cultures, the quest for wealth, the joy of expansion and the sorrow of loss. A once-provincial mentality was suddenly being replaced by an awareness of that mysterious "other-ness" out there, and this was being expressed in the music, brought so successfully through in this album.

The opening piece of this album is also its theme: Ayo visto lo mappamundi (I have seen the maps of the world). And this sets the stage for the rest of your voyage.

One favorite example I want to single out is a piece of Andalusian music that was written during (or shortly after) the time when Spain went from Moorish to Christian: in this amazing piece, we hear what at first sounds like Arabic music; after a few times you start to hear the new influence on Arabic music by the Medieval Europeans... and then finally, you realize that what you're hearing is that missing link which will soon become the phenomenon called "Flamenco!" And you'll feel a sense of discovery all your own.

These 65 minutes of solo guitar playing--handsomely, intimately recorded--are a pleasure to listen to. Russell is a true virtuoso, playing with an ease and assurance which gives the recital the great subtle, variety it should have. He's equally at home with the catchy, playful "Zapateado" by De La Maza that opens the program as he is with Llobet's lyrical, singable, relaxed "El testament d'Amelia." The beautiful, lullaby-like "La filla del Marxant" (also by Llobet) is as smooth as silk, and the four pieces by Andres Segovia have a flavor all their own. The downright odd, but alluringly discordant "El Abejorro" by Pujol will enchant and puzzle you. The program is songlike, dancelike, familiar and new-sounding, and Russell's graceful way with each style is ideal. Every note, every delicate harmonic, is audible and important, but there's never a sense of underlining either a melodic or rhythmic phrase. Russsell lets the music, diverse and fascinating, speak for itself. A must for those who love the classical guitar, especially with a Spanish flavor. --Robert Levine

To my disappointment, this was not a new recording, but a reissue of two CDs I already own: "1492: Music from the Age of Discovery" and "Traveler." If you don't have these CDs already, this double set is a great bargain. But check your CD rack before buying!

    5 out of 5 stars A reworking of a prior disc - but now with 2 CDs.......2006-01-27

I was pleased to see that one of my favorite CDs had not really gone out of print, but was reworked into this title and now with a bonus CD. Even though I own the original "Music from the Age of Discovery 1492", I'll probably buy this disc just for the extras. Very nice mood music, lots of variety, exotic instruments and lovely voices.

5 out of 5 stars perfect by candlelight or in the office.......2000-10-20

i've owned this CD for several years, and never tire of it. weather i'm curled up with a book, or just in the office with headphones on, it's appropriate for any occasion (outside a raucus party). i highly suggest it if you're interested in exotic, mystical, and festive tunes.

The word "fabulous" seems vulgar when applied to the Spanish diva whose delicately shaded voice encompassed music from the middle ages to the present. This four-disc compilation emphasizes her song repertoire, to which she brought warmth, intelligence, linguistic integrity and irresistible sincerity. Her dignity makes listeners want to come to her, and she rewards them with an intimate, personal experience, especially in this small-scale repertoire by Ravel, Debussy, Duparc, Fauré, lots of Spanish composers and German masters such as Schubert and Brahms. --David Patrick Stearns

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome musicality.......2006-07-26

This 4-CD set is a tribute to the concert career of the great Victoria de Los Angeles. The first 3 CDs show her totally at home in the art song of France and of her native Spain. In the French art songs, her silvery, creamy tone, her legendary legato and her perfect French diction make for wonderful and unforgettable performances. These include a sensual Scheherazade, magnificient singing in the Duparc songs and a phenomenal Poeme de L'amour et de la mer of Chausson (try to keep your eyes dry by the end of La mort de l'amour). In the Chausson, while de Los Angeles does not opt for the intensely Wagnerian approach, her sensitive singing more than does justice to the poetry and the feelings of the character. The Spanish songs showcase de Los Angeles at her most natural, flamboyant and attractive singing. The tunes are catchy, full of bouncy rhythms and De Los Angeles's fabulous voice never ceases to amaze. The 4th CD shows the wonderful chemistry between de Los angeles and the great Gerald Moore. While she does not erase memories of Fischer-Dieskau and Schwarzkopf in the Schubert selections, the Brahms songs are excellent and her Faure songs here are earth shaking in their elegance and refinement. The Italian and the famous Handel aria helps to prove De Los Angeles's reputation as an excellent bel canto singer. Her duets with Fischer-Dieskau are absolutely memorable and gorgeous.
The set comes with booklet including full words plus translations, helpful notes on De Los Angeles's concert career and a dozen of beautiful and rare black and white photos. Victoria de Los Angeles's concert career was as prolific as her legendary operatic performances and continued well after her retirement from the operatic stage. This introspective and almost encycopledic release is a real treat and is absolutely recommended. I totally agree with the editor's review who states that the word "fabulous" fails in every respect to fully capture the artistry of the Spanish soprano. Victoria de Los Angeles is definitely one of the most wonderful lyric sopranos of the 20th century and is one of the most heavenly artists to have ever graced the concert scene. A must-have for any collection.

      5 out of 5 stars Fabulous? Yes!!!.......1999-09-13

The album is a marvelous sampling of this great singer's artistry. Her performances of the French and Spanish composers are something special. The De Falla "Seven Popular Folksongs" are powerful, passionate; the last song, "Jota," raised the hair on the back of my neck.

I was delighted to see Faure's "Claire de lune" on the album, and equally delighted with De Los Angeles' elegant rendition of this work. The only recording of the song I've liked better is from an LP featuring Frederika Von Stade.

As an added bonus, several duets with the great baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau are featured on Disk #4. These include some charming settings of Irish songs by Beethoven, and a gorgeous arrangement of "Let Us Wander" by Henry Purcell. I remember hearing these duets years ago on an LP recording, and it was a pleasure to hear them again.

5 out of 5 stars Alison Young: A little Tango.......2001-03-12

Alison Young's recording, "A Little Tango in Her Blood," is a superb set of flute and piano performances of contemporary Argentine music. With rather more than just a little tango in her blood, Ms. Young performs this Argentinean program with Latin character and a silvery tone, and Vicki Seldon is her lively and sensitive collaborator on piano. Composers on this CD include well-known names, especially Ginastera and Piazzolla, and some less-familiar but mostly excellent ones.

The performances are first-class in artistry and technique, while style, character, and mood provide solidly satisfying listening. The flute sound is especially gorgeous, with an lovely low register and stability of tone throughout the entire range, and one simply hears no breathing. Technical challenges abound and are fully met, but one gets a sense of an emphasis on music-making rather than virtuosity; these players are bringing us music rather than merely showing how good they are. Technique and balances are consistently excellent.

Half the bands on the CD are transcriptions by Ms. Young, which would ordinarily induce some reservations for this reviewer. However these are musical, intelligent, and idiomatic transcriptions, and one would be pressed to discern which are original works and which are the transcriptions in this collection. One other fine transcription is by Enrique Granados.

Piazzolla is represented, of course, by several tangos, including a very early one. And one of his last compositions, Milonga sin Palabras, Song without Words, is dedicated to his wife. A fugue, surprisingly, is in the final set of three works of this collection, by Piazzolla, Fuga y Misterio, with much rhythmic character and an unexpectedly Bachian rather than bacchanalian quality though still Latin in quality, arranged by Granados. The brief, lyrical contrasting section is lovely. The final two works are moody and dramatic.

Ginastera's Impresiones de la Puna, in three movements, is an early work, dating from 1934. Arranged by Ms. Young, it has two slow movements, and a lively, rhythmic dance finale. It is fascinating and musically rewarding to hear a Ginastera quite a bit younger than the one we hear for example in his more familiar orchestral Variations Concertantes. It's like seeing early paintings by Mondrian or Picasso-so different from the later works yet with seeds of what is to come.

Some splendid surprises are works by composers new to this reviewer: Angel Lasala's Poema de Pastor Coya, and Horacio Salgán's Suite Argentina and Don Agustín Bardi. Lasala's Poema is in three movements with both a singing quality and rhythmic variety. The latter composer, Salgán, has much personality and character showing through in his music. His Suite Argentina is a recording premiere and it has rhythmic interest, a danced quality, and a strong lyrical sense.

The liner notes, in English and Spanish, are informative with texts of the original works when they are songs. Borges and Ferrer are amiong the poets. I warmly recommend this recording to those interested in fine flute playing, in Argentinean music, and to the general music lover.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Flute CD - even my plumber liked it!.......2001-03-03

I love this recording! As a fellow flutist, I can appreciate the high level of technical ability and musicianship demonstrated by Ms. Young in "...a little tango in her blood". In addition to her soaring, lyrical sound and impeccable intonation, Ms. Young has a wonderfully intuitive sense of style and feel for the music. I would recommend this recording for all types, from classical music buffs to the casual listener.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful performances and quite beautiful music.......2001-02-25

I am very impressed by both the music selections and, more importantly, the wonderful performance. Ms. Young plays beautifully and with a true feel for the music. This, combined with an excellent musical rapport with Ms. Selden, gives a real life to these well chosen selections of Argentinian music. I highly reccomend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Getting Some Tango in Your Blood.......2001-02-22

Alison Young, a flute recitalist of great poise and technical security, dazzling precision and virtuosic flare and the Principle Flute of the Houston Ballet Orchestra, demonstrates her considerable talents in ALISON YOUNG ... A LITTLE TANGO IN HER BLOOD. This work on the Albany Records label takes full advantage of Alison Young's experiences in Argentina as a musician artist-in-residence in 1998, performing and teaching in the regions of Patagonia, La Plata, Buenos Aires and Corrientes. Alison Young recreates the atmosphere of the native music of Argentina in a way that will transport you to South America. Composers highlighted in this work include Astor Piazzolla, Carlos Guastavino, Alberto Ginastera, Angel Lasala, Hector Gallac and Horacio Salgan. A newspaper in Argentina (Rio Negro) reported on "...Alison Young, with a little tango in her blood" and this wonderful collection of flute pieces will surely put a little tango in your blood as well.

5 out of 5 stars A real musical treat by a fine musician.......2001-02-22

A flutist of unusual accomplishment and musicality, Ms. Young's rendition of an Argentine repertoire sounds as if she had been born on the Pampas and brought up in the sophistication of Buenos Aires. The playing is superb, and the music is a treat to listen to, especially because much of it is new to North American ears. In addition, the extensive notes, written by Ms. Young and printed in both English and Spanish, provide a rich scholarly background to the music and are worth the price of the CD by themselves.

      5 out of 5 stars It's a gem!.......2006-11-21

Interesting mix of styles at work here. Paseabase El Rey Moro is particularly pleasing. Montserrat lends true feeling to this piece as she sings the part of the Moorish king. Her recitation of the old man's 'Dutch uncling' is unexpected and equally passionate. All this is punctuated by a musical style that never loses its Moorish influence but changes, oh so subtly, into a more 'European' mode. In direct contrast, Begona's performance of Canció en ritmo Quddan de la Nuba Gribt: Al Hussein de Marruecos is equally compelling. The voices are married perfectly to the styles of the music. In short, if you like Iberian music of this period (circa 1492), get the album. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Review: Isabel I: Reina de Castilla.......2005-07-27

This is a meticulously designed and recorded compilation that provides a delightful introduction to music of the late 15th and early 16th centuries . The CD includes both instrumental and vocal compositions that are performed with considerable expertise and verve. The package contains an illustrated booklet that includes an essay on the history of the period and full lyrics but, alas, is rather weak on details regarding the music other than to place it in historical context.

5 out of 5 stars Not always historically accurate, but fabulous performances.......2005-05-23

This recording presents a selection of music from the time of Isabella of Castile (1451-1504), organised to present a hypothetical illustration in sound of the main events of her reign. Connoisseurs will be familiar with a number of these pieces, many from previous Savall recordings (Palacio, Encina, Colombina discs). Alongside the Spanish works (villancicos, romances, sacred music) are examples of Turkish and Sephardic music, and also a Dufay chanson.

As on many other recordings by this ensemble, historical accuracy is secondary to an overall aesthetic result, and it is perhaps not difficult to understand why Savall's approach has ruffled certain musicologists. Where most of the works recorded here would have probably been performed by a small group of musicians (often a cappella), in these performances there is a wide range of instruments used in addition to the voices (including shawm, cornett and sackbuts). Four tracks have 'composed' introductions [tracks 1, 4, 10, 13], whilst Narvaez's romance [track 12] is transformed from a standard example of the genre into a hybridised Hispanic-Moorish lament.

On the other hand, it is equally apparent why this group have been greeted with such unanimous international acclaim. There is, after all, a significant difference between a sound recording and a musicological article - something which is not always as obvious as it should be in some of the more "correct" renditions of this repertory. Furthermore, there are a number of tracks which are definitely plausible [tracks 5, 8, 17, 20], as well as some which frankly do not stretch extant evidence - direct and indirect - too much [tracks 4, 15, 18; a thorough and satisfactory investigation of the political villancicos and romances - tracks 7, 10, 13, 16, 18 - has yet to be undertaken...why and in what contexts would such works be performed only by small forces, given their obvious exaggerated political overtones? Would Ferdinand and Isabella really have heard, for example, Encina's lament to their dead son [18] performed by no more than four singers in the elite isolation of their private chambers...?]

But what undoubtedly sets this recording apart from so many others of this repertory is the phenomenally high standard of these performances - unsurprisingly given the personnel line-up [Begona Olavide, Montserrat Figueras, Carlos Mena, Jean-Pierre Canihac, Markus Tapio, Andrew Lawrence-King...etc]. Given that so many tracks could be singled out to support this observation - not to mention the musicians themselves - it perhaps only remains to be said that this is without doubt one of the most incredible recordings of Cancionero songs available.
