When you step into THE OTHER SIDE OF THIS, leave your preconceptions behind -- about Airto as jazz giant, about music as solely entertainment. This is a work like no other in a long and remarkable career, a testimony to Airto's lifelong fascination with the confluence of music and spirit. Airto explains, "This is a recording of sounds as well as songs, healing sounds that can lift your spirits and transport you to another plane. It is not a creation of my intellect, but of my spirit and soul. Since my childhood in Brazil I have been exposed on many occasions to spiritual phenomena. I have learned from my friends and elders that human beings are formed of three basic elements: physical, mental, and spiritual. We also have two bodies, the physical body and the spiritual body, or aura. The spirit body can travel to places that the material body cannot. It is these places I speak of when I say 'the other side of this.'"

Airto's belief in the power of music as a medium for physical and spiritual healing began during his earliest formative years. He was born -- in 1941 in Santa Catarina, Brazil -- into a family of itinerant healers. His grandmother was a nomadic spiritual healer who traveled from village to village, treating the sick with herbs and ancient wisdoms. She gave him his first tambourine when he was two years old. His father also treated the afflicted, practicing Kardecism to channel healing techniques from the spirit world. Airto says his father taught him "how to interact with the spirit world, and I learned that I, too, shared my family's history of healing -- the difference was that I healed with sound."

THE OTHER SIDE OF THIS was recorded at the home studio of producer and Grateful Dead percussionist Mickey Hart in 1991. It was the latest of their many collaborative projects over the years, since meeting when Miles Davis opened for the Dead at the Fillmore West in 1970. Airto's percussive genius is featured in a diverse array of musical settings, performing solo, or in combination with the stellar cast of featured musicians assembled at Hart's home. The album's 13 selections, rooted in the Afro-Brazilian traditions of Airto's heritage, take the listener on an aural tour of imaginary landscapes; its liner notes provide guided visualizations to transport the listener step by step through a sweeping array of feelings, from reflection to celebration.

A great "first step" to the magic of "The Great White Way".......2006-11-26

With the Thanksgiving passing of songwriter Betty Comden, I recalled that I had, in my album collection, this album, not just featuring her songs but Comden singing on "Carried Away" and "Some Other Time" from the Tony-award-winning "New York." Two other songs from the play are featured, culled from a 1960 recording.

This compilation has some of the best of Broadway, not just the songs but the performers as well. Familiar names like Boris Karloff, the legendary Rosalind Russell, Nancy Walker, Chita Rivera, and Carol Lawrence are showcased in various selections from the likes of "Peter Pan," "Trouble in Tahiti," "Wonderful Town," "Candide," "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue," and, in this writer's opinion, the best musical in the history of the stage, "West Side Story."

The liner notes provide brief but insightful descriptions of the various plays, including an introduction from Comden and her longtime collaborator Adolph Green, also heard on the album.

The music is definitely Bernstein with his uniquely American style, coupled with Old World influences.

Great Gospel!!!!.......2006-03-12

This CD is terrific. What a great blend of gospel and just a touch of jazz on some of the cuts. I particularly like one of the songs Carla Harris wrote herself "Standing on Holy Ground" - especially when you know the story behind the song. She has a beautiful voice and knows how to use it. We are buying 600 to give as a gift to each guest at our upcoming prayer breakfast. We will all be blessed by her wonderful spirit and outstanding vocal talent.

Fresh, Yet In the Tradition.......2005-12-05

With Harris, in her recording "Joy Is Waiting", all I can say is remarkable.

Remarkable is the fresh treatment of the gospel genre, with songwriting that makes new works feel like classics. The arrangements and orchestrations are adventurous yet well-steeped in tradition, the production modern yet astute with the sense of musical roots.

Ms. Harris makes the critical first choice for her project in her association with Ron Melrose, who along with his prodigious touch on piano, organ, synthesizers, contributes inspired efforts as arranger and producer. Drummer Gene Lewin propels the session masterfully. The Broadway Inspirational Voices contribute a texture of an ensemble three times its size.

And Carla is blessed with the sensibility of singing with pure passion, yet at the same time allowing the inherent power of the music to speak. The result is an offering of spiritual repertoire, with a real bow toward Edwin Hawkins and Andrea Crouch, crossing denominations, cultures, and musical genres. This is a most satisfying set.

True To Life!.......2005-05-09

I was lucky enough to hear Carla Harris sing live, at Lincoln Center in New York City, only a few months ago -- fabulous! As it turns out, she sang two songs on this album, and they sound just as great here as from the stage. This CD is uplifting, upbeat and truly enjoyable; well worth the price!

I was told about Ms. Harris' new CD by a friend and bought it out of curiosity, more than any other reason. What a discovery! Her luminous voice takes hold of you and won't let go. Her bold rendition of "Bridge over Troubled Water" and "What A Friend" simply mesmerize and take you to another place. This is THE CD of the summer for anybody who loves good, down-home gospel music.

Imagine, if you will a down day, and you need a pick me up. Put this cd on. I doubt that your spirit will fail to rise upon listening to the first song. No doubt you will be "standing on Holy Ground". Ms. Harris' interpretations of well known songs reflect her her strong belief in God and positive view of life.

These songs will get in your head, and you will be humming them long after the cd is off. They will take to a wonderful place, and leave you there for a good time. As the title says "Joy is Waiting", stop making Joy wait, buy the cd and enjoy.

This symphony of spirit screams!! This CD grabbed me and my friends with integrity from the start. The next thing I knew I was comforted and willingly danced throughout a holographic musical performance. Real listeners are respected and paid with high quality, dynamic twists and artistic expression that exceeds any of todays expectations. These songs comfort and tangle at the same time. Compassion, Truth, and Strength through Softness await you. I envy your first listen. There is no predicting. I gave in, opened my heart and surrendered my ears to be directed and was gracefully pleased to have done so. Have your cuppa ready and sit between your speakers, this is an adventure! Take my advice, save the shipping and handling fees later by buying two or three copies now...

I own a lot of cds. I have five favorites that never stray far from my cd player and "Elephant Country" is one of them! John Andre Herrmann's "Elephant Country" is a must have for any serious music critic. The depth of lyrical quality, the richness of the instruments and the production is flawless. The songs are haunting to say the least. I have owned John's cd for over a year and i never get tired of listening to his heart felt songs. The melodies resonate and stay with me long after the music has stopped playing.I highly recommend this rare gem in the sea of average that we are bombarded with on commercial radio! My other four favorites, just to give you an idea, are: Dave Mathews, Pearl Jam, the Beatles and Van Morrison. Get a hold of John's "Elephant Country" you will not be dissapointed!

This is a superlative effort put forth by Mr. Herrman. I listen to this album over and over. I am so enamored with his work that "Marrach Rong" is going to be my wedding song. If that isn't an endorsement I don't know what is!

Brilliant!.......1999-01-21

This album leaves me wanting more! Re:Joyce is a classic song waiting to be discovered! (If any Hollywood film producers are reading this review and subsequently use this song in one of their films, any chance of a "spotters fee"?). The more I listen to it all, the more I get out of it. The overtones of blues, folk, jazz (and the one ingredient which prevails throughout the music which cannot be categorised) makes this album totally unique.
