The best of latin music through Domingo's voice.......1999-08-10

This CD goes wherever I go, it is with no doubt, the queen of my collection. Medleys are wonderfully orchestrated and arranged and every song makes you travel anywhere between Mexico and Buenos Aires. Here, Domingo's voice is more like a musical instrument than anything else and each song you'll discover a new instrument. Honestly, I would personally award it six stars.

Classic Latin American tunes beautifully sung and produced,.......1998-12-11

Domingo's love for traditional Latin American music shines throughout this CD. A selection of great "standards", beautifully arranged and recorded by one of the world's great voices. "De Mexico a Buenos Aires," written by Domingo's son is the one original song on the recording and is one of many highlights here. I have listenned to this CD countless times over the past two years and it remains a delight.

From the accordion master Valerio Longoria, this album is solid music that connects with the feet and the heart. Highlights include the thumping cumbia title track, on which he handles lead vocals, and "El Canonero," a bolero evergreen rearranged as a cumbia. Harrowing are the brooding ranchera "Me Vas a Olvidar," on knowing the end is near, and "Pa Que Me Sirve la Vida," a galloping polka ranchera that deals with the breakup with a stark fatefulness. Also compelling are the polka "Negro Destino" and the bolero "Estoy Perdido," two bluesy tunes in which the narrator remains cool and distant even while describing a crumbling relationship. This is the essence of the blues catharsis inherent in conjunto and bolero forms, that even in sad times, one can find salvation and even happiness. --Ramiro Burr

Longoria Stands Out.......2007-01-14

Most North Americans are unaware that like Canada and the United States, Mexico is also a nation shaped by immigrants albeit to a lesser degree than in the two former countries. So naturally, the various immigrant groups have helped to shape the direction of Mexican music.
Inside the big tent of Mexican music, there are a number of subgenres amongst which is the one that has come to be called alternatively the Norteno or Tex-Mex sound. This was developed when the music of German and Polish immigrants was incorporated into the musical traditions of northeastern Mexico. But unless one has grown up listening to German and Polish polkas or the derivative Tex-Mex, for most it is decidedly an acquired taste.
Those who already enjoy Tex-Mex but have not heard of Valerio Longoria are in for a treat with Caballo Viejo. This is not run of the mill Tex-Mex music. Like the greats of the genre Santiago Jimenez Jr and Flaco Jimenez, Longoria has a unique sound that blends a number of Latin American musical styles which makes his music so enjoyable.
On Caballo Viejo, there is no song that is unlistenable, but to me some are undeniably better than others. Listen especially to the following and you'll see why pioneer Longoria stands out still today:
1)El Canoero-a full-throttle cumbia with superior accordion heroics.
2)Alza la Cara-Another cumbia. What an accordion!
3)Jacinto Ramos-an entertaining murder ballad about a sancho who received his condign punishment from the man he wanted to make a cabron.
4)Caballo Viejo-Ah, this is sweet. The haunting accordion work and plaintive vocals make this the best version of this great song I've ever heard. I generally hit replay on this song several times when I am listening to this CD.
5)Ojos Verde Mar-A bittersweet bolero that will have you ready for the dance floor or a little romance.
6)Alas Quebradas-A song of Peruvian origin that had me thinking of some of the songs of the Argentine group Los Chuchamos Del Tevein. The sound is foreign to Mexican music but Longoria makes it his own.
Amongst the rest, there is also a fine trio of instrumentals on which Longoria demonstrates his squeezebox prowess.
This is a CD I enjoy frequently. So if you enjoy Latin American music in general, but you don't particularly care for Tex-Mex, you ought to hear Caballo Viejo. It may change your mind. And don't let the cheesy CD cover drive you away.

True sons of Merengue........2000-02-25

They have that unmistakable beet like their fathers. Which is always good to hear. But they have managed to do create a new style, whch is what makes this one "mortal". As soon as I saw them do one of their songs on TV, I went out to buy it. I wasn't disappointed. It is extremely danceable. I also love the name and what it means.

Merengue Callejero with a lot more to say........1999-08-12

This is a great album. Its definitely Merengue Callejero, but with a lot more lyrics and suprises than the usual. There is a lot more thinking and production going on here than in most Merengue. And dont get me wrong I like most Merengue, but Los Potros really have something refreshing going on here. Although Oye Mi Ritmo is the first single and is slamming, the other songs will grow on you tremendously. Vengan Todas Mujeres Latinas is the jam. Rebeca99 and Esa Morena will grow on you if they dont catch you on first listen. I like this album more everytime I listen to it.

This CD set includes "Rilke for Voice & Guitar" by Harold Blumenfeld. The composer submits this review of the work by Donal Henahan in the New York Times. "In Harold Blumenfeld's austerely beautiful 'Rilke', a cycle of three songs, soprano Rosalind Rees sang superbly, with a dulcet tone, unusual attention to dynamic subtleties, and flawless pitch. The songs, with the guitar softening contemporary asperities that a piano sometimes exaggerates, made their lonely, pained point with the utmost precision. The guitarist, David Starobin, performed with exemplary technique and great sensitivity as accompanist."

Excellent performance of Waltzes.......2000-12-23

In this CD performed by André Rieu, waltz music takes a very different path in sound and style. It is not as all the other walzes by Strauss that we have listened before, since it has the very special Rieu's magical touch. Even when the titles of the songs are in spanish, anyone can identify the waltzes with just the listening of the first bars. It is all wonderful. In these performances of Strauss Waltzes, the piano is arrenged, included and heard in those waltzes where it was usually absent. In the song "Strauss y Compañia", the music of Strauss is very well mixed with that of other composers; it is like a popurri of Strauss Waltzes very well mixed and played. Also, "Golondrinas de Austria", is an excellent example of the beautiful melody of the Strauss, not written by Johann but written by his brother Joseph, it is not less than any of Johann's music. All in all, this CD contains some of the best waltz music that one can listen to with the different and fabulous sound that André Rieu has to offer us.
