Musical Excellence.......2005-09-26

I cannot stop listening to this fine CD which is two record albums combined: Cugat's Favorite Rumbas (Columbia, 1954) and Mambo at the Waldorf (Columbia, 1955). The compositions are classic and the sheer technical exuberance of Cugat's orchestra is astounding.

If you like the Buena Vista Social Club, these mambos will absolutely drive you crazy. The rumbas recall extravagant Hollywood dance numbers of the war years and are equally indelible. Duerme, Begin the Beguine, Para Vigo Me Voy, Acercate Mas, and more, feature excellent vocals. You may think Xavier Cugat old and dead, that his tunes were just schmaltz, but try these out on your player and see what made his name a household word.

My Opinion.......2003-01-12

I would love to be the person to select which songs to put on the CD. On this CD, I would definitely NOT have selections #5,6 10 and 11. I would probably not have #2,8 and 12. I would have all the rest and maybe have it twice with Begin the Beguine, Say Si Si, Besame Mucho, Mambo Gallego and Mambo Gordo [3 times]. I love these songs and the way Cugat has orchestrated them. My favorite rumba of all times--Siboney, is not on this CD. Xavier Cugat has recorded at least 5 different renditions of SIBONEY and every one of them is superb. Ernesto Lecuona would be proud [the composer of Siboney].

MOST ARE GOOD___A FEW BAD.......2003-01-11

The first half of the album, 4 or 5 of the songs should be left off of the CD---- however many are my favorites like Begin the Beguine, Green Eyes,Say Si Si, and especially Besame Mucho are great. The second part of the album [Mambo at the Waldorf], all are excellent--- my favorite being Mambo Gordo. Thank you.

Nostagic sounds on CD.......1999-07-07

This CD perfectly demonstrates the wonders of technology. Having struggled to listen to a gradually deteriorating taped version of SINA MAKOSA, that classic by LES WANYIKA, since the early 1980's, I am now able to enjoy this and other equally exceptional classic recordings on CD. The quality of guitar playing, the rythmn, melodies and harmonies of these songs is exquisite. They have soul. To anyone with memories of Kenyan music in the 70's and 80's, or anyone who wants to acquaint themself with this spirited music, this album is a blessing.(Also check out LES WANYIKA's new CD AMIGO (CLP001).)

lovely... nothing else like this music.......2006-06-09

a special sound, a particular sense of melody and rhythm that I've never heard anywhere else except on this disc... old time songs filled with sweetness, sorrow, and the ghosts of romance... heart-aches that hurt sooooo good... cheerful lullibies warm and giving... dancing without a single worry in the world in the carribeans in the 1920s.

I am from Barcelona and this group exemplifies the upbeat rumba era. The music is very upbeat and happy. This is not a deep emotional rumba CD.
