It was only a matter of time--and savvy marketing--before Niña Pastori's throaty, commanding vocals commanded stateside attention. The young performer is widely regaled as Spain's top contemporary flamenco singer. But instead of taking a chance with unfamiliar originals, Pastori makes her official domestic debut with Joyas Prestadas (Borrowed Jewels), a regal collection of modern and classic pop covers. It's still a risky move, considering the familiarity of so many songs on the disc. But it largely works because of Pastori's rich, emotive delivery. She caresses each lyric as if it were here own. Pastori dives right in with first single "Burbujas de Amor," one of many hits immortalized by Juan Luis Guerra. Her delicate take on the song initially fails to match Guerra's passion, but Pastori kicks it up considerably by the end. Better is her pulsing rendition of "Vivir Sin Aire," a 1992 hit for Mexican supergroup Mana, that still sounds intense and immediate. There are also sexy, assured readings of Armando Manzanero's "Todavia" and Joan Manuel Serrat's "Mediterraneo." The disc's highlight is Pastori's haunting take on Alejandro Sanz's mournful "Cuando Nadie Me Vie," which alternates between mournful vocals and hushed piano interludes. Great Jewel / Gran Joya.......2006-12-27

I bought this album because of the first three songs:
-The version of "Burbujas de Amor", originally sung by Juan Luis Guerra, which I heard over the radio here in Lima.
- The version of "Vivir sin aire" a Song from Mana, a Mexican group.
- Lo Eres Todo

I discovered a beautifully performed version of Ana Torrona's (Ex Mecano) "Hoy Igual que Ayer", which, I think, outperforms the first three.

Then you have Serrat's Mediterraneo. What can I say? Beautiful.

Well, my sugestion, get this Jewel!.

I have several of Nina Pastori's albums and was curious to see what this latest release was about. Her fifth album ("no hay quinto malo") seemed to me a couple of notches below the fourth one so I was reluctant to get this one, especially when I found out it was a cover versions cd. I said to myself "ouch, there she goes too....lack of inspiration, go for the cover of classics". I have heard so many top artists doing that with poor results that I was highly skeptical for this one...

This happens to be a remarkable album. Nina interprets ten selected masterpieces of Spanish songs (by that meaning not only from Spain, but also from other Spanish speaking countries-artists), and the result is unexpectedly brilliant. You will find her own version of Mediterraneo from Joan Manuel Serrat, an older tune, but also fairly recent songs such as "Cuando nadie me ve" from wonder boy Alejandro Sanz. These two artists are from Spain, but you will also hear a lively version of Dominican Juan Luis Guerra's "Burbujas de amor". Or a cover from a song from Mana (Mejico). The strength of this cd is that it is innovative (I don't remember anybody else doing this type of covers before), and that it is not the typical cover cd: either carbon copy of the original tracks (what's the point then?) or completely tasteless and dull, and we also get a load of that every now and then. In fact, this is a great tribute to artist who create and express themselves in Spanish. Sure, you get the "nuevo Flamenco" touch on each track, but the performance is on target, as well as the production, making it a wonderful 38 minutes journey.

My personal favourites ? "lo eres todo", "Mediterraneo" and "Pajaros de barro". But the whole album is in fact a great one and you should also get it. Thanks Nina for risking yourself in these marvelous woods of great songs and giving them a new life ! Un abrazo.

Beautiful.......2006-07-04

One of the most unique voices. Someone beyond her years. Pastori has that leyendary voice many young artists wish they had. She makes these songs her own. An album for anyone who loves good music. Her voice is never forceful and she sings from the soul. She has that sweet mellow, honey like voice. Think of Norah Jones or Lizz wright. Voices that make you wanna sit down and drink a cup of tea, just relaxing. My favorites are "Burbujas de amor" and "Cuando nadie me ve." But I love the whole album. This is one of those albums that will capture many people. "Who is that?" is what most people will say.

A quien adquiera esta joya, difinitivamente que sera propia y no prestada. Pues no se merece ser prestada esta joya, sino ser poseida.

Excelentes adaptaciones pasando por aires flamencos de grandes canciones en la lengua de Cervantes. Desde que la musa inspirara a Juan Luis con sus burbujas de amor hasta el mas actual Alejandro Sanz y Cuando nadie me ve. Sin olvidar el emblematico Mediterraneo de Serrat.

El Flamenco dice presente en la Musica del mundo, Diego El Cigala y Niña Pastori lo representa dignamente llevandolo a otras partes del mundo adaptado a canciones que todos conocemos.

Ana and her beautiful angelic voice..............2004-06-10

I had no idea that I was buying such a beautiful album the day I picked up JOYAS DE DOS SIGLOS. Ana will break your heart with her beautiful renditions of classic mariachi, corridos and rancheras on this album. I was used to her more contemporary, poppy sound and didn't know how her voice would make the transition to more traditional pieces. Ms. Gabriel has a voice that is best described as rich. That thick, heartbreaking, "fat" mariachi voice. It tugs at your soul, penetrates your thoughts and draws you into the music whether you are a native Spanish speaker or can only respond to the universal form of expression through song.

Some of my favorite tracks on this album by far are the mariachi love songs. ("Un Viejo Amor," "Hay Unos Ojos") and the corridos as well ("Pobre Bohemio," "Valentin De La Sierra"). Though, I am a South American/Estadounidense, for the whole duration of the album Ana Gabriel made me feel Mexican! Que vive, Ana!

This CD 'Joyas de los dos siglos,' and 'Ayer y Hoy' are her best CD's. They touch my heart and soul like none other of her CD's. If you are a fan of Ana's, and don't have these, you don't know what you are missing. Her interpretations are compelling and haunting.

Beautiful guitars, beautiful voice, enchanting CD........1999-08-10

Whenever I go on a road trip, this is one of the CD's I must have with me...I'm hoarse by the time I get to my destination. Ana's voice is so beautiful and strong; you feel every word. If you enjoy classical guitar, you will also find an appreciation for many songs on this CD on some level.

The Julio Jaramillo cd is great! Grandes Trios is just average........2007-01-20

This oro puro has two cd's - Julio Jaramillo is the first cd and is awesome! The recordings were not digitally re-mastered so there is hiss, clicks and static at times but Julio's sweet voice comes through. The Grandes Trios cd is not worth the effort.
