California's Los Lobos are the reigning kings of Tex-Mex/Rock Espanol. But this debut CD by the San Angelo, Texas band Los Lonely Boys might herald a changing of the guard. This is truly a band of brothers, led by guitarist/vocalist Henry Garza and his younger, bass-and-drum-playing siblings Jojo and Ringo. Like a lot of groups, they had to move away to achieve fame--in their case, to Nashville. But after the release of their EP, Willie Nelson heard them, put them on tour as his opening act, and recorded them at his studio. Stylistically, the Garza brothers' bilingual songs about love and life combine Stevie Ray Vaughan blues, Santana-style guitar licks and R&B. Nelson helps out on guitar, with Reese Wynans on keyboards. Produced by Keb Mo and B.B. King producer John Porter, the music is honest, driving, and down home, especially on the organ-filled uptempo tracks "Senorita" and "Tell Me Why." The stinging guitar solo on the Afro-anthemic "Onda" recalls the '70s grooves Santana built his chops on, while "The Answer" and "More than Love" are raw power ballads that show off this group's dynamism and diversity. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

3 out of 5 stars Nice job Boys!.......2007-08-01

A great album, although not quite living up to the hype imho. I think a better producer could have gotten more out of these very talented boys. The bonus video is great - the guitar player has loads of talent. Wish he would have demostrated more of that "less refined" playing style on the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing!!!.......2007-07-13

I recently saw them in concert and they just blew me away! Listening to this CD just brings back the power of talent I discovered at their concert.I thought Heaven was great but hadn't listened to their other tracks and every song on this CD is really high caliber. They are true musicans. I can't believe how talented they are at this age. Track 8 Onda is my favorite! It moves me and reminds me of past, present and future. Past greats SRV,Santana, their present greatness & their wonderful future to come!
Orale Muchachos!!! Thank you Los Lonely Boys!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Texas Trio Takes Tex-Mex To Top.......2007-06-07

Awesome music! My sister-in-law, a native Texan, turned me on to Los Lonely Boys a couple of years ago, and I haven't missed an album since. They have such a unique sound with a blues, Tex-mex, rock 'n roll mix that sets them apart from the crowd. I here the next Eric Clapton, Chet Atkins, Jimi Hendrix kind of talent coming from Henry Garza. And Ringo and JoJo can hold their own with many musicians playing much longer. I hope to be listening to Los Lonely Boys for many years to come!

2 out of 5 stars blues? I think not.......2007-05-12

if this is blues i am hard of hearing. i find this ok i had a copy gave to me. not worth buying, i find it weak, and to say henery sounds like s.r.v. what an insult. what has the music industry come to if this is the best there is to offer.

5 out of 5 stars Great Tex-Mex Blues Rock.......2007-03-09

In the great tradition of Los Lobos and Stevie Ray Vaughn, Los Lonely Boys provide a great selection of music.

The self-titled debut album from Texas trio Los Lonely Boys tries--and mostly succeeds--in being everything to everyone. Garza brothers Henry, Jojo, and Ringo try their hand at classic-rock grooves, Tex-Mex, bilingual pop, and traditional harmonies with deliciously ear-pleasing results. The album is perfectly suited to Top 40, Spanish and adult-contemporary radio--all at the same time. At times tracks such as "Onda" and "Dime Mi Amor" recall 1970s-era Santana, but the Boys are at their best on "Heaven," the feel-good first single, and "La Contestacion," a yearning ballad matched by pleading instrumentation. As a bonus, this Special Edition includes Spanish versions of "Heaven" and "More Than Love," but the real highlight is a Southern-fried take on Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line." That the boys manage to make the classic song their own is no small feat. There's also a DVD featuring thoughtful live performances and music videos that offer a glimpse of the Boys in action. --Joey Guerra

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Los Lonely Boys.......2007-05-14

I heard one of the songs by chance and decided to buy the CD. I really enjoy all of it.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-07-29

Very intertaining. I bought it for the Heaven track, but enjoyed the whole thing.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2005-05-21

This CD was the surprise of the last decade. I caught only a few bars of "I Walk the Line," on a television commercial. I thought it was a fresh sound so I bought the CD. Wow! No, I mean wow-wow-wow. This band is tight like only brothers could be. There is no awkward phrasing or uncomfortable moments that are always apparent between rock stars. They are in and out of each other's personal space without so much as a deep breath. They are natural together. Their harmony is three voices from one, and one voice from three. Each brother is an outstanding musician in his own right.
The Garza brothers call it "Texican Rock n Roll." Thanks for that. I would be hard pressed to name their style. I hear Eagles, Santana, Ottmar Leibert, Stevie Ray. They are Country, R &B, Jazz, Blues, Ranchero, Romantica and more. Every time I listen I hear something new. JoJo's bass sounds like lead, Ringo's drums while not loud or overbearing are complex and sound big and full.. Henry, well Henry. Here is where I venture to say that at 25 years old, If not now, Henry Garza is well on his way to being the best guitarist around. He doesn't play guitar, he dances with it, and oh what a dancer.
Someone mentioned that "Hollywood" is addicting. I found every single song addicting, but I still hold out my favorite as "Crazy Dream" because of the jazz changeup. It's sooo awesome. LLB is coming to Spokane and I can't wait. Until then I'll continue playing this CD over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece. .......2005-04-12

Los Lonely Boys provide a glimmer of hope with their debut album, a glimmer of hope that modern music is not all that bad and even today great bands can still appear and knock your senses of course to somewhere else where everything is dominated by pure emotion. "Los Lonely Boys" is a masterful mix of flavors and notes, it is both a throwback to the 70's grooves bands like Santana perfected and a jolt into the future for what can be called Chicano rock. The album is filled with delicious winks at Richie Valens, Johnny Cash, Santana and many, many others. One of the pleasing things you realize while listening to this album is that this is a band that knows and has studied the classics, bands like Los Lonely Boys and Jet have recently come under fire because they sound a lot like their legendary heroes, I still do understand what the problem is. People complain that a lot of new rock sounds too simple, distorted and dumb, and then they complain that other new bands soo what? Too good? "Los Lonely Boys" is a beautiful album filled with wonderous melodies, consider "Heaven," a wonderful song of hope and redemption with indeed heavenly guitar licks, a dreamy atmosphere and uplifting spirit. "Crazy Dreams" is pure classic rock with an almost blues edge running through while "Señorita" has that wicked, feverish vibe Santana created in songs like "Black Magic Woman" where the main character just had to fall in love with some witchy babe who sounds like she walked out of hell. "Hollywood" is cool and breezy while "More Than Love" doesn't even belong in this era, this is a stylish, excellent ballad that would do Richie Valens justice. It is no wonder that Los Lonely Boys have been opening for Carlos Santana, I have already mentioned the name a few times, in the album the influence is most present in "Onda," a scorching jammer that exhilarates and leaves you admiring just how well the Garza brothers can play. For those who do not already own the album this new Special Edition is THE ONE to get. The extra material is not added in vain. The Garza brothers come from Texas and so it is no surprise that they tip their hats to the great Johnny Cash with a roaring cover of "I Walk The Line" where the guitar and vocals fly in exhilarating blues/country ecstacy and the Spanish version of "Heaven" is just as moving as the original. The extra DVD has the band's music videos and some interesting acoustic renditions where the band members share fascinating stories about the birth of each tune. "Los Lonely Boys" is a powerhouse debut, a masterpiece of raw rock n' roll and feeling. If like MUSIC, go check it out.

5 out of 5 stars The Texican Treo.......2005-03-18

If you are into truely incredible guitar riff's with a danceable Latin undertone, look no further. The musical stylings of Los Lonely Boys have all the things I like about Stevie Ray, Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne, while keeping an upbeat rhythum. For a real treat, put on a good set of headphones and press play. You'll be amazed by the quality of the recording (You can actually hear the amp crackle in the beginning of "Onda"). Before you know it, you'll be jumping off the couch with your lighter in hand setting the ceiling fan on fire until you realize you're not at a concert. OK, maybe that was just me, but... Top it off with the videos and even an acoustic set that I've never heard anywhere else and you truely have a bargain! I dare you to try not to sing along or tap your toes through this album! Oh, word to the wise...don't put the DVD on at your next party unless you want all your friends parking on your couch, staring in rapt facination.

5 out of 5 stars Great Marco compilation CD........2007-06-10

But then again, can't expect nothing but greatnest from El Buki. These are all his hits since he left Los Bukis. Nothing but the best. Great compilation if you don't already own the rest of his CDs. I probably wont buy it just cuz i own everyone of his cds since he came out with Los Bukis which are 23 (Not counting compilations). Buy it now!!!

Even in the northern states, Mexican music is easy to find on American radio, but airplay almost exclusively consists of the Tex-Mex norteño style. In contrast, there's barely an accordion in earshot on this sparkling collection of traditionally rooted songs. Los Bravos del Norte de Ramon Ayala weigh in with the bouncy ranchera "Andan Dicendo," but on all other fronts guitar trills rather than squeezebox sighs propel the music. With violin swoops and falsetto vocals, La Calaca unleash the galloping son huasteco/ranchera "Rogaciano." The same ensemble graces the gusto "El Tecolote" with less ferocity but equivalent momentum. Los Lobos dip way into their past with a 1977 version of the son jarocho sped up into a self-proclaimed son loco on "Flor de Huevo," complete with dizzying fretwork and a flailing rhythm. The delicate instrumental son istemeno wedding song "Mediu Xhiga" from Dueto de los Hermanos Rios brings exquisitely ornamented requinto guitar from Mexico's Pacific Coast. Rounding out the set is a slice of Latin cabaret complete with braying clarinets and a gritty vocal takeoff on, of all things, a traditional Mexican Christmas carol via Lhasa de Sela's "Los Peces." --Bob Tarte

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not the usual mix.......2007-01-14

Putamayo recordings are a bit different from the mainstream music of a culture- they are known for their research into getting more of the heart and soul of music of a region rather than the top/pop stuff that everyone knows. This is true of this item. Enjoyable to listen to and dance. The tape was included in a gift basket of Mexican food given to friends. They called me while they were cooking and enjoying the music in the background.

4 out of 5 stars Mexico by various Artists.......2006-11-10

My mother had bought this album after we had heard it in a store we were at. We instantly loved this CD. Being of Mexican heritage we know a lot of mexican music and we equally love this one. My favorite is the Ramon Ayala song.

5 out of 5 stars Viva Mexico !.......2005-07-08

I played this CD for a friend and he was surprised that first there wasn't a mariachi and even more surprising for him is that not all songs are sung in spanish. And he really loved it and commented on how beautiful the songs are. " Rogaciano " he recognized because I play Miguel Aceves Mejia all the time. This CD is a nice sampling of music from different parts of Mexico. I really love this CD, the songs are beautiful, a nice CD for those who collect world music but also for those who want to learn more about Mexico and it's diversity. Mexico has so much culture to offer and it's a shame that Mexicans are stereotyped a lot in the US, I'm happy that I have met some people who are interested in learning more about Mexico and it's wonderful people and cultures. It is a great loss for those who don't bother because Mexico is so rich in culture and tradition. I am saying this not only because I am of Mexican descent but because I realize that everything that I love, the traditions, the culture, the people, the music, the food and everything that makes me who I am is MEXICAN

5 out of 5 stars A basic 'must'.......2004-11-18

No one style of music defines Mexico - and no one style dominates the lovely various artists introduction MEXICO by Putumayo: indeed, the intent here is to represent a range of styles and new artists, and in this Putumayo's MEXICO succeeds beyond expectations.
An accompanying booklet in both English and Spanish explores the fusions and styles of Mexican sound from the ballad corrido to the ranchera.
MEXICO is a basic 'must', serving as a winning introduction to any collection: if only one Mexican compilation were to be considered, it should be Putumayo's MEXICO.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Introduction.......2004-09-01

If you are looking to buy one CD on Mexico for your global music collection....this is probably one of the very best. Other compilations & Mexican radio in the U.S. present a misleading picture of Mexican music being dominated by Mariachi and Norteno music.

This album gives an unusually big space to music of Central & Southern Mexico, where most Mexicans actually reside...so in many ways it is much more representative of Mexico then Mariachi & Norteno dominated compilations.

Nonetheless, Mexico is way too varied & complex to be put on 1 CD. For example, this CD is completely devoid of Yucatecan Jaranas (kind of a cross between Mexican Sones & New Orleans Rags executed by brass bands). But, it is a high quality compilation that serves as a very good building block for your Mexico collection.

3 out of 5 stars Great band; wish the audio quality was better........2007-02-01

I love the Los Lonely Boys; their studio albums leave the listener wanting longer guitar solos and further explorations of the musical themes they create. So, Los Lonely Boys live must be a real treat; unfortunately this album doesn't have the dynamic range I would have expected and I found myself straining to listen to the complexities of the songs.

I've heard other live albums done at the Fillmore that were recorded better than this one, so my expectations were pretty high. Might try other Los Lonely Boys titles and come back to this one only if you're trying to have all their titles.

2 out of 5 stars Bland Live Album.......2006-11-03

Yes, I know, when a band plays the Fillmore it should go down as magic in music history. And, having seen the LLB several times live in Concert in the past couple years I have seen some awesome musicianship and incredible live playing. Unfortunately this album seems to sterilize their sound and spontanaeity and loses the great feeling I've seen from them live. Maybe they were nervous about recording and wanted it to be perfect? WHatever the issue, it does not come across well for me. Either my expectations were too high or something, but I took this CD back and was greatly dissapointed. I expect someday that they will release a true live rocker someday that really captures their awesome live sound, but this ain't it.

4 out of 5 stars Live at the Fillmore - Los Loney Boys.......2005-10-03

Excellent album and wish I had been there. Service was prompt.

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't Disappoint.......2005-09-24

It's difficult putting Los Lonely Boys into a musical category and this CD highlights that. They take you from Santana, Los Lobos to Stevie Ray & Richie Valens. This live CD has a tight sound with incredible contributions both instrumentally and vocally. They hit those harmonies that only genetics can seem to master. You definately don't have to be a Lonely Boys fan to appreciate the music, but be warned you will be a fan after listening. This trio of brothers is going somewhere - get the CD and enjoy the ride.

Stylistically, Mexican Standoff divides itself down the middle, with the first half exploring Mexican border music and the second half devoted to Texas-style blues. The Mexican music ranges from the mariachi brass of "Lonely Planet" to the conjunto accordion of "La Cantina el Gato Negro" to the torchy "Match Burns Twice." On "Wanted Man," Shocked moves into the sort of narrative territory frequented by the likes of Joe Ely and Tom Russell, while "Picoesque" matches gospel piano with vocal dramatics so over the top they amount to caricature. While the first half of the album is all over the musical map, the bluesy half is more of a piece, with stinging guitar and bedrock organ suggesting that Shocked has channeled the swaggering spirit of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars Shocked !! .......2005-11-19

Another great album from a wonderful artist. The cantina songs are great !! The Blues songs are awesome...and I'm not usually a "blues" fan. I'm beginning to think this woman is a musical genius.

3 out of 5 stars quite a combination.......2005-10-11

The first half is Mexican cantina songs. Not bad songs, just not my favorite genre. I really bought this CD for the blues songs in the second half; they are excellent. Now if we could just get her to do a whole CD of blues or blues-rock.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Cooder Movie Music Long Overdue.......2007-06-09

These were two of my favorite records back in the mid-80's, Americana before Americana even existed. "The Border" evokes beautifully the feel of the southwest, of a hot night with the radio playing some station from Mexico where legend Freddy Fender sings achingly, plaintively, about the dreams of thousands who long for "the broken promised land" of America. "Across the Borderline," written by Cooder, Jim Dickenson, and John Hiatt, is one of the most gorgeous songs you'll ever hear, covered in concert by Bruce Springsteen and rerecorded--with a vocal by Harry Dean Stanton--on Cooder's "Borderline" album. But Freddy Fender's version is the definitive. The music for the rest of "The Border" keeps that southwestern, Mexican-American, feel and vibe, with one more standout track, "Skin Game", an slinky, ominous growl of a song featuring a great vocal by Hiatt and trademark Cooder slide guitar. (By the way, the film, starring Jack Nicholson, is a must-see) "Alamo Bay" is something stranger, for me, not quite as successful, but still worthwhile. The movie (a failure with all the talent involved, Louis Malle directing, and Ed Harris and Amy Madigan starring) is about the clash between exiled Vietnamese fisherman and American fishermen on the Gulf Coast during the late 70s. Cooder's music finds a way to echo this culture clash, particularly in "Theme from Alamo Bay", by combining western instruments and his slide guitar with traditional Asian instruments. The result is truly gorgeous. Also of note is the crunching rocker "Gooks on Main Street" with a vocal by LA punker Lee Ving. Cooder's sountracks, for me, have always been much more interesting than his solo records, whether it be the traditional Appalachian sounds of "The Long Riders" or the Cajun influences on "Southern Comfort". "The Border/Alamo Bay" show him at his best: "The Border", along with "The Long Riders", is in my opinion his best soundtrack, and "Alamo Bay" is not all that far behind. As far as I know, other than the inclusion of certain tracks on the compilation of Cooder's film music released several years ago, this is the first time these have been on CD. They are very much worth owning.

Thank you to those nice folks from Raven Records for making these two soundtracks available on one CD. Amongst some fine instrumentals, several of which appeared on "Music by Ry Cooder" there are two superb vocal tracks that didn't ... "Building Fires" from The Border, and "Too Close" from Alamo Bay (Amy Madigan can sing, too?) ... and even on their own, they make this a great buy.
