I was on vacation in Puerto Rico and the cover of this CD caught my eye. I purchased it on impulse and it became an instant favorite. It is still in my CD player in my car. Carolina has a powerful voice and interprets the lyrics with feeling. The songs have great production value and it is hard not to move your body to the driving beats. I became an instant fan of Carolina and you will too. Buy this CD!

Una Salsera Verdadera.......2002-08-27

Wow! This is what I have to say about Ms. Carolina Laó. Since I am a female myself, I have always been curious about female salseras since there are so few of them. Aside from acts like La India, Celia Cruz, and Brenda K. Starr, they are few and far between. So when I saw this disc I had to buy it even though I had never heard of her. On the rare occasion when I've found a salsera, the CD usually turns out to be mediocre at best. I find that with the females they tend to spent more time on the make-up and clothes than the actual quality of the CD. I also notice that the songs tend to be slowr and more delicate, which is a disappointment for the real rumberos out there.

I can tell you that this CD is far from disappointing, delicate, and breaks the mold of salsera clichés. The album starts off strong and ends strong. This Colombian salsera has contagious lyrics and rhythms. My favorites are 1# "Dulce Veneno", an uptempo salsa (she also has a ranchera and balada version), #3 "Sabe a Chocolate", a sweet, slow salsa, and #8 Quiero Perderme, a salsa with a great melody and a certain urgency to it. This album is great!

Tienes que probar el "Dulce Veneno" que trae Carolina Lao. Este disco sera sin duda una de las mejores producciones del 2001! Este CD es una produccion de Ramon Sanchez y Alejandro Jean para Warner Music (Wea Latina). Esta nueva produccion no se parece para nada a su aterior disco "El Son de Ahora", este trabajo contiene temas mas romanticos y sensuales que su primera produccion. "Dulce Veneno" se ha convertido en uno de mis CD's favoritos. El disco esta bueno de principio a fin y todos los temas son buenisimos pero los mejores son "Dime Que Si" (de Alejandro Jean y Jorge Luis Piloto en sus dos versiones salsa y pop), "Sabe A Chocolate" (de Eduardo Reyes y Alejandro Montalban), "Quiero Perderme" (de la propia Carolina Lao) y el mejor tema del disco el cual le da el titulo "Dulce Veneno" (de Alejandro Jean y Jose Luis Morin, en tres excelentes versiones: salsa, balada y ranchera). Este disco contiene salsa, boleros, ranchera, pop y balada, de todo para todos los gustos. Los arreglos de este disco fueron trabajados por Ramon Sanchez, Osvaldo Pichaco, Willie Sotelo, Gustavo Arenas, Milton Salcedo y Mike Rivera. A diferencia de su primera produccion la cual fue grabada totalmente en Colombia, este disco fue grabado la mayor parte en Puerto Rico y algunos tema en Miami. Carolina Lao se ha convertido en una de las mejores interpretes de salsa y tiene una voz y un estilo unico, ademas es una de las mujeres mas bellas y sensuales de mundo de la musica latina. Si te gusta este CD tienes que tener la primera produccion de Carolina Lao titulada "El Son de Ahora" la cual tambien esta excelente. Tambien recomiendo los siguientes CD's: "Pasional" de Jessica Cristina, "Subele El Volumen" de Michael Stuart, "Prohibido" de Saned, "La Reina Del Sabor" de Choco Orta y "Jerry Rivera" de Jerry Rivera.

Reedman, arranger, and composer Jose Luis Cortes cut his teeth with Los Van Van and Irakere, two institutions of modern Cuban popular music, before breaking out on his own in 1988 with a new group called Nueva Generacion--NG. The group set out for a hook-and-groove dance-oriented music with sophisticated jazz harmonies and soloing. It was a hit. In fact Cortes and his group had several popular hits and, along the way, established themselves as the kings of timba--roughly, a sort of re-Africanized salsa. Veneno shows Cortes and NG in fine form--killer hooks, tight playing, fluid soloing, and a dash of humor (catch the quote from Maurice Ravel's Bolero in the title track). Cortes's smooth vocal arranging is assigned to female vocalists, setting a very effective contrast between the muscular playing of the group and their translucent sound. In tracks such as "Como Me da la Gana" ("Like I Want It"), "Cucalambe," or "Verano Habanero" (Havana Summer) the catchy refrains suggest Manhattan Transfer-goes-Cuban, via Juan Luis Guerra's 440. Disappointed by Shakira?.......2007-02-03

Although not with Shakira's vocal talent, Natalia's music has exactly that 'inde pop' feeling that made Shakira lovable. This is a collection of really nice songs, a lot of which she wrote herself (like 'Aburrida' which refers to the planet and pollution). From her power tracks 'Tu Veneno' and 'Que pena me das' to her beautiful ballads 'Estamos Todos Solos' and 'Donde Ira', from her sexy-'jazzy' 'Febrero' to her tamperamental 'Gitano Corazon', she is most likely to win you. The album was a nominee in the Latin Grammies.

Este es el segundo disco de Natalia Oreiro. Este disco fue muy exitoso en America Latina, Europa y Asia. "Tu Veneno" fue nominado a un Grammy Latino en el 2001 como mejor disco pop femenino del año. En esa misma categoria estuvieron grandes de la musica pop como Christina Aguilera, Thalia y Laura Pausini. Este disco contiene los 4 sencillos que son "Tu Veneno" "Rio De La Plata" "Basta De Ti" y "Como Te Olvido" Este disco tiene pop, baladas, rock y candombe. Recomiendo mucho este disco.

Natalia Oreiro is the kind of singers that don't have a very trained voice but, have a beautiful voice. Tu Veneno, is my favorite album, for many reasons, but one of the most importants is that it's got an special latin flavor. The track list is gorgeous, first: Tu Veneno, what a wonderful song!, it remains me to Gatubela, and, the video of this song is amazing. Then, Río de La Plata, one of her best songs ever, with a lot of feeling, Luna Brava and Gitano Coraz'on are very similar, a gipsy style. Cómo te Olvido, another hero-style song, very powerful. And, we have funny songs too, like "Febreo", which is the story of a gay.
Natalia, I must say you're a great singer, ¡Viva Natalia Oreiro!

Superb talent!.......2005-03-24

I had already bought Ana's Lorquiana album when I ordered this, so I knew she could really sing. However, after ordering Veneno, I noticed that there were four Cole Porter tunes on it and I thought, "Oh-oh. Another non-English speaker trying to do American standards and, what's more, in Spanish!" Well, Ana put me in my place on that count. While the non-Porter stuff is great, her renditions of the CP pieces show that she is the consumate intrepreter. Her total assurance in these numbers is one of the many strong points of this highly recommded release.

Este es el mejor disco de Ana, sinos olvidamos un poco de la nostalgia de los primeros. Escogio bien a sus letristas y la musica es muy atinada. Tiene adaptaciones hechas por Sabina de canciones en ingles, canciones del joven talento Pedro Guerra y desde luego de Victor Manuel. Ideal si se quiere conocer a Ana Belén e ilídico si ya se es fan de ella.

I bought this CD because I liked Mírame so much, and if anything I like this one even better. "Derroche" is of course sensational, but wait till you hear the very first piece, "La Mentira." Torchy, guitars, plaintive vocals, you can picture yourself in some boite in Madrid or maybe in a tropical paradise--take your pick. And then there are highly original Spanish adaptations of 4 Cole Porter tunes, including the title track. She has the most amazingly mellow vibrato you will ever hear, along with a seductive lower register and a sexy breathy delivery on several songs. What a set of pipes! Buy it.

Combina una sólida carrera en el cine y teatro como gran actriz y directora con una faceta musical, basada esencialmente en una voz prodigiosamente bella y grandes canciones de autor. Veneno para el corazón es uno de sus mejores álbumes. En él hay temas de varios estilos que muestran la versatilidad de la cantante: del bolero a la rumba, pasando por una bachata, derroche, el gran super hit del álbum, y versionando en español algunos de los grandes temas de jazz de Cole Porter. Tambien se encuentran sólidas baladas pop. Si te gusta Ana Belén este álbum es un acierto seguro.

I agree with the Spanish gentleman from Chicago- I could not say it better- this album is fantastic! It makes the fusion of styles he mentions seem natural and easy. When I listen to this album it takes me back to the streets of Sevilla. My taste in spanish music is varied- from Flamenco, to Serrat, to La Oreja de Van Gogh- however, this is the only album I feel compelled to recommend. I guarentee, after a few listens you will be hooked on EVERY song.

Este album es una autentica maravilla. Es de aquellos pocos que no admiten mediocridad. Kiko Veno mezcla una infinidad de estilos y ritmos, creando asi una musica diveritida y a su vez, bonita y bailable. El primer tema, "Lobo Lopez" mezcla pop, bossa nova, cha-cha-cha con una guitarra blues. Otros temas se aproximan mas a lo que es la rumba, y otros temas mezclan ritmos caribeños con estilos flamencos. Kiko Veneno es de los pocos artistas que realmente consigue reunir todos estos estilos tan magistralmente.

This release combines tracks from Ragazzi's two Mexican releases for the US market. This is the original line up who later went on to form El Circulo. They are not to be confused w/ the newer 'boy band' like Ragazzi. 5 beautiful voices, and beautiful acoustic pop/rock music that's simple, yet so profound. A great amazing album........2001-03-22

Esta Muy Bien Eso Del Carino contains a smart innovative blend of swinging nouveau flamenco and brassy jumpy post-punk from Spain. Kiko Veneno crafted a fine set of really catchy tunes, including melodic rockers 'Veneno' and 'Estaba Lloviendo' that compare favorably with the best from XTC and the Beatles. 'Viento de Poniente' is a brooding lively croon with sweeping flamenco touches which achieves the kind of mood arena bands go for but usually muck up. 'Respeto' and 'La Casa Cuartel' are strikingly lovely songs that stand out on this consistently strong album. A fun version of Dylan's 'Memphis Blues Again' may get you singing along in Spanish, even if don't know the language. The production is balanced throughout, using horns and Kiko Veneno's distinctive guitar and voice to create a unique sound that's remarkably accessible without being light. This is the best of Veneno's albums, more challenging and more satisfying than contemporaries from Spain like La Barbiera del Sur, Tomatito, and Ketama. This album is likely to please listeners who favor post-punk/alt rock, the English Beat to the Clash, and who are interested in nouveau flamenco. Really good road trip music -- I've played this album for a lot of people in a lot of places, and everyone has liked it. And a great place to start discovering that Spain has rock innovators as good as the Brits and Americans.

Proof that great things come through mixing different influences. Superb guitar playing, Andalucian Flamenco feeling and light hearted lyrics make this a very interesting example of the high quality of contemporary Spanish music. Well worth buying to find what Latin music is like on the other side of the Atlantic.
