This Record is a Classic.......2007-08-02

I recently moved from NJ to VA so I gave away all my old "33's Long Play Albums" which included this one: "Comedia". After reminiscing on how much I enjoyed listening to the hauntingly beautiful voice of Hector LaVoe I decided to buy the CD. If something is truly outstanding you go back for seconds.

Great album by Lavoe...but beware of this reissue!!!.......2006-06-08

This is Lavoe in top form! His signature tune "El Cantante" is here. Produced by Willie Colon!!!
This remastered edition, although a bit better than the old Fania cd pressing lacks depth and detail. If you have a turntable look around for the Fania LP. No type of remastering will duplicate the sound of a LP.
And another thing--one of the pictures in the tray card is actually not Hector. It seems to be Ray Barretto.

Diving into Hector.......2000-06-17

Now I didn't give this CD 5 stars due to the lack of close perfection, as opposed to the others, but I definitely love it and play it hard when diving into Hector's music. This album expands his talent to the audience and allows us to see less commercial tunes that take us back to chillin' on the stoop in Spanish Harlem and hearing some good tunes. If you're not a huge Hector fan or lack the albums, I suggest Hector's Gold, or the Live album, only to feel what we fell in love with and hear him in his most famous tunes. Once you feel it, grab this and listen to the different array of tunes. Blades' "El Cantante", original studio recording, is here, as well as "Porque te Conoci". One of my favorite tunes, "Songorocosongo", is a must to hear some hard conga sounds, as well as "Comedia". "Tiempos Pasados" is romantic, and Bandolera runs through the blood. I wouldn't call this a dance album, but rather one that lets me sit back on a weekend and enjoy El Cantante himself.

Os Mutantes's third album finds them growing both more sophisticated and, at times, sillier. The funky "Ando Meio Desligado" ("I Walk Disconnected," a love song full of pot-influenced imagery) gives the record its subtitle. Along with "Quem Tem Medo de Brincar de Amor" and the instrumental "Oh! Mulher Infiel," it shows the group becoming more comfortable with the harder-rocking side of its music. Other highlights of this often brilliant record include the gorgeous "Desculpe, Baby," the anthemic chant "Haleluia," and a Zappa-style doo-wop parody, "Hey Boy." --Rickey Wright

Os Mutantes ý molto bueno!.......2006-04-07

Mike Reed's elitist attitude towards psychedelic rock is easily drained out by the enthusiasm of Os Mutantes fans. This Brazilian psychedelic rock band is the latin equivalent of The Beatles. They were ground-breaking and progressive at their time and pushed forth new barriers for the world of music. Os Mutantes has beautifully flowing music and A Divina Com?dia Ou Ando Meio Desligado is no exception. Possibly their best progressive works that are actually danceable! Unheard of in psychedelic rock for the most part. Heavy dance influence bleeds from Brazilian culture like the sweat on a Hippopotamus's back. Os Mutantes threads this influence through their music and when they're finished you have a brand new outfit. An outfit you'll want to wear everyday and show off to your friends.

Originally released in 1970,'A Divina...' was their third effort.Only thing I can honestly about Os Mutantes(aka The Mutants)is that they were a halfway decent Brazilian obscure psych band.Nothing all that great here,you understand.But okay.Their first three CD reissues are supposed to be their best.Line-up:Rita Lee-vocals,Sergio Baptista-guitar and Arnaldo Baptista-drums.Might possibly appeal to some fans of early Beatles,Spectrum,Love and MPB-4.Take a chance here.You might get more out of it than I did.

Transition record.......2004-09-15

This record marks the transition of the band from their psychedelic Sgt.Pepper's-like sound of their early years into the sound of the 70's, heavier and more complex. The band would end up doing prog-rock in the late 70's and the first signs of it can be seen in a couple of songs. Let me correct the translation of the title: "Ando meio Desligado" means "I've been a little disconected", but the band's English version for the title song, present in the album Technicolor, is "I've been a little spaced out", showing what the original title really meant. The highest moment of this record is the hilarious mockery of Janis Joplin "O meu refrigerador nao funciona" ("My refrigerator doesn't work"). Check it out!

Great and, believe me, clean.......2004-01-09

This record is really something else. I'm not going to repeat every word written in the early reviews, they're all right in my opinion, but as a brazilian and born ten minute far from their neighborhood, I feel the duty to tell you, just for the most curious, that there were no drugs in this specific moment (1970). Ya, this extremely psychedelic and transcendent album was written and played with no external influence!!! Genious stuff!!!

Whoa man.......2002-01-13

This is a GREAT album! One of my all time favorites! Whenever I want to show off my music collection, I grab this one and blast it. The Mutantes shift gears at lighting speed, everywhere from krazy rock 'n roll fiasco to creepy carnival music with nutty sound effects. This is one of the most MANIC albums that I've ever hoid'. They are extraordinarily creative on so many levels: song-writing, performance, recording, post-production, etc... My fav Mutantes album and one of my over all favs of all time. Twelve thumbs up!!!

Life is really different, that is, live is much worse.......2002-07-14

This is a sample of what I classify as "Mockery Songs of Brazil".

In early 70's Brazil was under the military dictatorship put to power by the Americans who were so afraid of the "Leftist Wind" blowing in South America that they did not hesitate in making alliances with rightists' military dictators, helping them to trash human rights and all.

Strong censorship was in effect and some of the most clever artists started this kind of music then. It was publicized as "mockery" but all the lyrics had double meaning so cleverly composed that fooled the censors.

This kind of song is sung purposely out of tune, "the worst the better" for what really mattered then was to pass on the "message". A fine example, in my point of view, of the intelect beating the "system".

"Apenas um rapaz latino americano" is the one I like most. But there are other songs equally interesting. "A palo seco" for instance where it says that "I have 25 years of blood and of dream and of South America. And to the power of this fate, an Argentine Tango makes me feel much better than the (American) Blues".

An album for the connoisseur.

An interesting record of historic organ before restoration.......2000-04-10

Having read the two customer reviews, I find myself in between the extremes. While Lena Jacobson does show a penchant for the more astringent and reedy stops, I cannot agree that the sound is shrill and aggravating. I found it quite interesting, and she displayed every facet of the potential sound. The Fredriksborg organ was rebuilt in the 1980s and there is a disc illustrating its mellower side on Marco Polo records. Nevertheless, I would be loth to surrender this recording. I find the clacking of the mechanical action and the occasionally asthmatic sound rather charming. The selections made by Jacobson are winning and the performances are never dull.

Glorious organ playing.......1999-08-11

This is early keyboard playing at its best! I especially admire the artist's remarkably keen sense of rhythm and expression. These little pieces which can often sound dull in the hands of other players acquire a new life, no doubt due to Ms. Jacobson's vivid musicianship and insights into Baroque musical rhetoric, as mentioned in the cover-text. To my mind, her performance of this music sounds more like powerful speech and drama than music-as-such. I just love the fantastic sounds of this unique chamber organ, even though one or two tracks present us with sounds that are unfamiliar to our ears and perhaps best characterized as "rich", to employ Michael Palin's apt description of the smell of the durian fruit! Ms. Jacobson has very successfully pulled the right stops - we get to hear lots of tantalizing combinations of early organ sounds, especially the typical Renaissance reed stops! In fact, the whole thing sounds more like a small Renaissance band than the hands and feet of one single musician. I discovered Lena Jacobson only recently - I bought her recording of a selection of Buxtehude's organ works released by deutsche harmonia mundi-BMG. I think this must be the best Buxtehude organ CD to date. Very, very powerful and colorful organ playing! I have to say that compared to these dramatic and virtuoso interpretations of preludes and chorales, most of the competition (such as Vogel) sounds dull and run-of-the-mill. I strongly recommend the Court and Dance Music CD as well as the Buxtehude!

shrill and unlistenable.......1999-07-10

If you didn't already know this music was performed on "the 1610 Essaias Compenius Organ at the Frederiksborg Castle" in Denmark, there wouldn't be much on Amazon's page to warn you. I love Renaissance dance music, but on this album the tunes are rendered shrill and agonizing to listen to by the squawking, clacking, buzzing organ, which on some tracks sustains a single note throughout the entire track, sounding like an oven timer. This CD just arrived today. I listened to it once, will never listen to it again. A complete waste of money. I'm incredibly disappointed.
