5 out of 5 stars A POWER-HOUSE, PASSIONATE BLUES DEBUT.......2007-07-11

Five BIG Stars! Wow! Gina Sicilia is a 22 year old Philadelphia blues belter with a big beautiful voice and the songwriting talent to harness and focus it. With the sensibilities of an 'old soul', this young singer is BETTER than the early CD release buzz!! Originally inspired by the legendary Bobby "Blue" Bland, she has honed her blues skills to the point that she sings with a great deal of confidence, passion, fire, and feeling. She writes her brand of urban blues 'in the tradition' and her singing operates in the Bonnie Raitt area-code with a dash of Koko Taylor, but with her own unique sound. Backed by a powerful band with an authentic blues sound and great soloists, she sings heartfelt songs of love lost, love found, and love that's just hanging around ("You Set My Heart On Fire"). And she wrote eight of the eleven songs found here.

The 'Pieces De Resistance', the best of the best, begin with the 'classic blues'-based "I' Ain't Crazy" with Gina on fire and with the band really rippin' it up. "Try Me", with Gina's totally believable plea and some great road-house tenor sax, is flat out wonderful music making. The two ballads show her vocal and 'genre' range with the country-influenced ballad "That Much Further" and a soul-influenced "Rest of My Days" displaying her control of dynamics. "There Lies A Better Day" is a down & dirty blues with some great, dense harmonica playing and a great guitar solo with a wonderful Bill Doggett "Honky Tonk" quote. "That's a Pretty Good Love", with it's arrangement alluding to an element of Ray Charles "Hit the Road, Jack", is a 'radio-ready' song that could be a hit single, as could several songs on this CD. "You Set My Heart On Fire" is pure smoldering desire: a magnificent laid-back blues. Gina Sicilia sings a distinctive brand of urban blues with rock and soul influences and I look forward to her next musical adventure. She is riding the crest of the new wave of "real deal" 'blues and roots' singers. HIghly Recommended. Five BLUESY Stars!!

5 out of 5 stars Steve C.......2007-07-19

I own all the albums Gina has put out to date and like them all. In my opinion, Gina Villalobos is undiscovered Gold. This album is especially good; her best to date. I would label her music "alternative country", though I'm not sure others would agree. In "Miles Away" I am mesmerized when I hear the poignant angst of song #6, "Let's fall apart". I say, "Here's someone really worth listening to."

5 out of 5 stars Stunning! .......2007-06-21

I first heard about LA singer songwriter Gina Villalobos in an article in the May-June 2007 issue of NO DEPRESSION magazine. Intrigued, I went out and found "Miles Away". Here are ten songs, each one an absolute keeper. I am no record reviewer by trade, but do know this is the Americana record of 2007, even though previously released overseas in 2006. All other female singer songwriters out there, take note and get in line behind Gina. All others pale after hearing Gina tear thru 38 minutes of the raw, rocking, emotional music on this record. I hope the word gets out about Gina soon here in the U.S. Thank you, Gina!

This album was and still is the bomb They did Gina so wrong
Why the lack luster promotion? And why was people sleeping on her I still listen to this CD and it still cranks she needs to still be out there I know people would love her sound this girl can blow for Reeeal!!

    3 out of 5 stars It was a Start.......2001-12-31

Im not really sure if Gina Thompson is still in the music buisness, I have not heard anything else from her since 1996. But this cd is very average with good vocals from the artist but the same repetitive beats. She has or had talent and this cd will grow on you. I gave her 3 stars just because it all sounds the same. Nevertheless I still listen to it, so it must be alright to get occassional airplay in my house. This cd speaks about love entirely and some of the tracks have a jazzy feel and others are dance joints. One Love.

3 out of 5 stars "Nobody Does It Better" by Gina Thompson.......1999-04-25

I would call Gina's debut release: "Nobody Does It Quite The Same."(I obviously wouldn't really call it that, but it describes her style.) Thompson is a vocal acrobat who is trying to nudge her way into the hip-hop tinged R&B scene, competing against fellow crooners like Faith Evans, Deborah Cox and Brandy. It's obvious she wants her piece of the pie when she uses a tactic we've all seen before. "'Maybe if I feature a song with a rapper that's remixed by hit-maker Puff Daddy, I can get my 5 minutes of fame.'" Which is exactly what she did and no more. Alot of people today, in 1999, will look at you strange if you ask them about R&B singer Gina Thompson. You'll probably hear an answer of "Geenie who...?" It's really a shame, 'cause she can sing and had strong back up from a currently famous producer named Darkchild(worked with Mase, Brandy, Whitney Houston, Kirk Franklin...etc.) who provided Gina with innovative and "groove-me" type beats. Today, Darkchild is on his way to producing great tunes. I wish I could say the same of Gina Thompson. In all, I would say, if and only if you're a true R&B fan, to go and pick up the album. If not, just check out the Puff Daddy remix of 'The Things That You Do" along with the Darkchild remix featuring rappers Craig Mack and Method Man both on the same maxisingle. If you want an honest and informative report, then just look for the signature name atop other rap, R&B and hip-hop reviews. This is THE RAP REVIEWER checking out. ~Peace

3 out of 5 stars thompson delivers on promise........1998-11-03

one part guest rapper (missy elliot)...three parts sampling already successful artists (stevie wonder, the winans, brandy)...a pinch of a covered classic (anita baker's "angel")...sounds like a recipe for hip-hop success, if ever there was one. unfortunately, gina thompson has not received widespread attention for her debut release, _nobody does it better_. it could be that, to make it as a hip-hop artist, you either need to rap or come off a lot harder than thompson portrays herself, or it could just be a short-coming of the promotions department of mercury records, but thompson deserves a lot of credit for _nobody does it better_. with vocals comparable to those of deborah cox and enough style to land her that vacant slot in en vogue, thompson is bound to come back strong on her second release. let's hope that on that album she relies less on other people's beats and more on peddling her own considerable talents.

    Album Description

LTM is proud to announce the first release on CD of the debut album by Gina X Performance, an acknowledged new wave/electro classic first released in 1979. Formed in Cologne, Germany, the core of Gina X Performance comprised charismatic Gina Kikoine (vocals and lyrics) and writer-producer-musician Zeus B. Held. Between 1979 and 1984 the group released four albums of cool arthouse electro-disco: Nice Mover, X-Traordinaire, Voyeur and Yinglish. Their classic 1979 single No G.D.M. was a club hit on both sides of the Atlantic and remains a cult classic thanks to electro/synthcore compilations such as Nag Nag Nag. Slinky second single Nice Mover is also an established favourite, having appeared on the Andrew Weatherall compilation Nine O'Clock Drop. As well as stand-out tracks No G.D.M., Nice Mover and Be A Boy, this new extended CD edition also features four bonus tracks: two remix versions of No G.D.M. and two rare cuts, Babylon Generation and Homage a BB. In 2005 Q Magazine's electro-pop special rated No G.D.M. as one of the most influential songs to come out of the Continent a fact made clear by even the most cursory listen to Ladytron, Goldfrapp or Miss Kittin and the Hacker. The CD features twelve digitally remastered tracks and runs for 60 minutes. The booklet preserves the original artwork from the 1979 album release as well as a detailed artist biography.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars the most accessible of their electro new wave CDs gets a reissue.......2007-07-14

Gina X was a blip on the new wave radar, mostly because much of the music is extremely experimental, and the fact that much of it is not in English--except for THIS album, which is completely recorded in English, and has the most commercial sound the band ever put out. Quirky female vocals can easily be compared to Nina Hagen or Lene Lovich and the music has hints of a diversity of new wave acts from early B-52s to Gary Numan. With 80s synth dance producer Zeus B. Held as part of the band line-up, the 4 Gina X Performance CDs are must haves for 80s lovers, and if you only own one, this would probably be the best choice.

"Plastic Surprise Box" and "Be a Boy" should have both gotten major new wave station exposure back in the early 80s, but they didn't--they are definitely what new wave synth dance was about back then. The big hit here is No GDM--but if you're looking for the 12" versions as bonus tracks, look to one of the other CDs, because it is oddly not on here. Instead, you get the 7" edit and a 1992 remix that is supposed to I guess fit into the hardcore techno scene of that time, but wouldn't have really worked there, as it doesn't here. Then you get an unnecessary edit of 'nice mover' and a bad ambient instrumental b-side to close out the CD.

You basically don't need to play this CD past track 8, because while this is the strongest of the four albums, the CD release has the weakest bonus tracks of the Gina X Performance reissue catalog.

Celeste Holm made a return to theatre for The Utter Glory of Morrissey Hall, a flop musical. It tells the tale of a battle in average British girl's school between the Fifth Form, the Sixth Form and the administration and I believe love (of a heterosexual variety) is involved. Celeste Holm is the headmistress in all this chaos and, at least on disc, does not distinguish herself in a score that does the same. Clark Gesner as the composer does not even come close to replicating the charm that is to be found in his earlier hit, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Still it is always a treasure for collectors when such a rare, never-to-be-seen again gem resurfaces. Besides, the title is always fun to roll around on the tongue.

Quirky female vocals can easily be compared to Nina Hagen or Lene Lovich and the music has hints of a diversity of new wave acts from early B-52s to Gary Numan. With 80s synth dance producer Zeus B. Held as part of the band line-up, the 4 Gina X Performance CDs are must haves for 80s lovers. Each CD will definitely have a couple of songs that you would like to include in a complete eclectic 80s mix.

Moving deeper into the 80s with this release, Gina X Performance gives more umph to the drum machine beats, but this is not their most danceable effort--although "IC Code" is one of their strongest new wave tracks--sung in English. Several of the songs on here are experimental with mostly spoken vocal and a trippy ambiance.

What's so odd about these rereleases is the choice of bonus tracks. This particular release includes remixes of songs from their OTHER albums. 'No GDM' will most likely be familiar to fans of Erasure, because they covered this song as a B-side in the late 80s, and it was ALSO covered a few years earlier by The Bollock Brothers. So you can see how influential Gina X actually was on the new wave synth band scene. The dubs are not particularly entertaining. And this original 12" mix of 'Harley Davidson' (which actually got airplay on a local new wave station in New York) is just not as good as the original album version, but DEFINITELY a crucial bonus track so that it is preserved on CD for those who actually owned the original vinyl 12". What would have been nice is to have the English language 7" version included as well, which WAS on the vinyl 12" and is not on any of these rereleases. Bummer.

Clean aggressive attack with guitars that forge a sustained alliance between melody and energy topped with vocals that are alternatley sinister and sexy. Eleven snorting blasts of killer hooks, crafty songrwriting and pure rock-n-roll fury! A must have CD.

Okay, so, technically I've only heard the first two songs on the album, but they alone make this a worthwhile purchase. It's a perfect blend of punk-indie-hardcore-something, lol. The vocals remind me a bit of The Distillers meets Tsunami Bomb, with a touch of Sahara Hotnights. The music is pretty decent as well, though the rough, gritty vocals do tend to almost drown out the instruments. It's.. unique, overall, but I love it. ^.^ Definitely worth your money and your time to check out!

This particular album from 1980 can definitely be compared to synth production by Giorgio Moroder from this era, when he was moving from the donna summer disco to the more synth-driven new wave sounds he would dabble in with the likes of Sparks before finding a heavy "electric dreams" sound in the mid-80s.

What's so odd about these rereleases is the choice of bonus tracks. Why, for instance, does this release contain as bonus tracks TWO songs that are actually from one of the bands other CDs??? Not a major issue, but just a rather odd decision.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Legendary Voice At Its Best.......2000-06-10

There are two things to remember when listening to this amazing sampling of Caruso's art. First, Caruso lives up to the legend: he was truly the best. Second, when Caruso made these recordings, these classic arias were new. Although he did not create the roles he sings here, he put his stamp on them, and all tenors have had to reckon with his impassioned, ringing interpretations since. This compilation is a great introduction to Caruso's singing.
