Nice, but . . ........2005-07-21

Shooglenifty's sixth album is good, but not great. "Radical Mestizo" is their second live album, and while most live albums are usually fun this one is just okay. If you've got their five previous albums there's no need to go out and find this one unless you are an avid collector. I absolutely love their music, but this is just a bunch of songs from "The Arms Dealer's Daughter" with a few songs from the other albums thrown in. I must say, however, that the selection of songs is great.

If you've got the other albums just throw them all in the CD changer and hit shuffle. Not real impressive.

This hard to find CD is an excellent introduction into the stylings of guitarist Rene Toledo. It has both a commercial appeal for the casual listener and enough "technical" virtuosity to satisfy the most ardent jazz critic. Songs like "Bahia" provide tremendous commercial appeal and showcase Toledo's impressive chops. "Forever" will put you into a trance and gradually lead you to an intense "rockish" climax. Pick this one up, as all the songs are wonderfully and creatively put together.

This brotha's guitar and accompanying rythmes, beats, and vocals will take you to the Carribbean, Latin America, Africa, and back home again to the States. The first three tracks are beauty encarnate. The third track makes my soul and spirit soar back to a time of ancient existence, a time when men and women could look into each others eyes, see the essence of the other, and UNDERSTAND what it is they were seeing. This understanding of human essence was also tied to an intense awareness of and respect for the many animate forms surrounding us.

This is one of the places Toledo takes me to. Mestizo is the vehicle. Your journey awaits.
