4 out of 5 stars Buen Disco de Merengue.......2001-11-30

El unico gran disco de Grupomania como un trio. El primer disco desde la salida de Elvis Crespo. Al final los dos triunfaron grandemente. Las mejores temas de este disco son la 11,2,1,5,10 y el 7.

4 out of 5 stars La Mania Esta Aqui...............2000-08-04

This Cd was produced following Elvis Crespo's departure from the group. The song "Te Vas A Caer de La Nuves" is in reference to Elvis. Many believed that after Elvis Mania would begin to slump. This cd proves that without Elvis, Mania can survive and actually compete with Elvis. This cd can go blow for blow with any cd. Israel Casado did some great arrangements in this cd(Mirala, Te Vas Caer de las Nubes, La Mania Esta Aqui, Bombon). Every song in this cd is well versed - Que Loco, Cuento con mi Pueblo is lethal.

This delectable work, premiered in 1721, shows composer Alessandro Scarlatti at his most brilliantly varied. Solo passages are punctuated with choral interjections and vice-versa, an antiphon duet for oboe and the lovely soprano Suzanne Ryden at first seems like one between two singers; Scarlatti fools the ear. Soprano Dominique Labelle brings a grace to her fluent singing in both solo and ensemble passages which manages to be energetic and tender at once. The setting of the Dixit Dominus never rests; a tenor solo is interrupted by the chorus; an intricate soprano-soprano-counter-tenor trio in the "Dominus a dextris" is rendered even more complex by the chorus, which then, in an entirely different meter, nervously jumps its way to the end and then melts into a gentle baritone solo, with long, legato lines. Scarlatti relies on dance rhythms throughout and Nicholas McGegan leads the Philharmonia Baroque and Philharmonia Chorale superbly through every change of tempo and texture. The recording of the Vespers was made live in Berkeley in April of 2004 (its North American premiere); CD 2 adds another forty minutes of prime Scarlatti recorded in the studio. This is a must have--beautiful, fascinating music, ideally performed and recorded. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Fifty Six Vespers Honoring the Patron of Music: St. Cecilia.......2006-04-03

For an absolutely enchanting experience this 2 CD set of all of the vespers composed by Alessandro Scarlatti honoring the essence of music - St. Cecilia - is inimitable. Here is more Scarlatti than you ever knew was available and in the entire 56 works there is not a weak link.

Nicholas McGegan conducts the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and Chorale with a bevy of superb soloists - Susanne Ryden, Dominique Labelle, Michael Slattery who makes a very impressive debut - a tenor with style and flair whose career is young but very promising, Ryland Angel, Gonzalo X. Ruiz and Neal Davis - in lilting and dramatic performances, each one fresh and inventive, and each one performed with McGegan's usual penchant for understanding period music.

The recorded sound is superb: the first CD was recorded during a live performance and the second CD is a studio production. But the sonics of both are superb. This is music to transport us to another era and reinforces the fact that Scarlatti was a brilliant, forward-looking composer. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, April 06

5 out of 5 stars Glorious celebration of the patron saint of music.......2005-02-03

A. Scarlatti's vespers for St Cecilia's Day are given a wonderfully alert live performance by Nic McGegan and the Philharmonia Barqoue. Nic's specialization in Scarlatti's dramatic choral works pays off brilliantly here with some superb contributions from the soloists including the stellar soprano Dominique Labbelle

5 out of 5 stars The Mother Lode.......2006-01-13

If you are looking for a comprehensive survey of the best of the Russian Orthodox liturgical tradition, your search is over. This is the mother lode. First point: I must admit to being something of a purist, and I was at first skeptical that an American choir could perform music of this genre so convincingly; but hearing is believing. Yes, they clearly have included a few honest-to-God Russian basso ringers (and maybe one or two altos); but this is an American choir performing Russian Orthodox liturgical music the way it's supposed to sound - only better. Second point: The selection of pieces is fabulous. This choir's artistic director, Elizabeth C. Patterson, consulted with Vladimir Morosan, the Last Word on the Russian Orthodox choral tradition. The results of this collaboration are reflected in both the breadth and quality of pieces selected. This is literally a millennium of music, beginning with a sample of ancient znamenny chant and ending with three stunning meditations by the late Georgiy Sviridov. Each selection is both accessible and interesting, and a prime example of its composer and/or period. Third point: The individual pieces, with very few exceptions (such as No. 3, Rakhmaninov's `Ave Maria'), are NOT the most well-known and frequently performed warhorses of the Russian Orthodox liturgy. This is not a `Top Ten' recording. That makes this collection all the more interesting. In at least one instance (No. 15, the other Rakhmaninov offering) this may be the only recording available if you're not prepared to dig deep in the discography archives of several dozen universities and conservatories. Fourth point: This is not a new recording, but it marks a standard of quality that few performers in this genre - including native Russian choral ensembles - have since met or surpassed. Elizabeth Patterson has an innate feel for this music. In her previous life, she must have been a Russian monk. Final point: For serious musicians, musicologists and aficionados, this is a perfect gateway to a deeper understanding of this tradition. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Some Of Purcell's Greatest Music........2001-01-29

Older collectors will be grateful to have these Deller Consort recordings restored to circulation again. Younger collectors will hear on this CD some of Purcell's greatest music. The adagio section of the opening symphony to "Come Ye Sons of Art", for example, is as serenely beautiful a musical texture as can be imagined.

Alfred Deller's work in re-awakening interest in vocal music from the C16 and C17, especially focusing on the counter tenor component, was well supported by Vanguard Records, who are now reissuing Deller's recordings on CD. The notes with this CD were written by Alfred Deller's son Mark. Mark became a counter tenor, like his father, and the two of them are heard in the well-known duet "Sound the Trumpet" on Track 3 of this CD.

Alfred Deller gathered around him some noteworthy singers including April Cantelo, Rober Tear and Gerald English. The latter's most conspicuous contribution, "Beauty Thou Scene of Love" may be heard on Track 25, preceded by a harpsichord interpolation.

Four of Purcell's masterpieces, in performances from the late 50s and early 60s, are included on this 67 minute CD.

    5 out of 5 stars A most welcome re-release.......1999-08-29

Whenever I play music as interpreted by a favorite artist, I always check my positive reactions against those of other reviewers who might not be swayed by like biases. Eternally grateful to Vanguard Classics for their release on CDs the fabulous recordings of Alfred Deller, countertenor, and his Consort, I found myself loving their latest offering even before I removed the shrinkwrap. A careful check of files after hearing it revealed that back in 1959 and 1962 the critics were in accord with me. (OVC 8115) draws upon Deller material from those years (although you might not guess it from the excellent sound) and gives us four vocal pieces of Henry Purcell: "Come Ye Sons of Art: Ode on the birthday of Queen Mary, 1694)," "Rejoice in the Lord Always," "My Beloved Spake," and "Welcome to All the Pleasures: Ode on St. Cecilia's Day, 1683). The magic moment in this set is the pairing of the incomparable voices of Mark Deller and his father in the "Sound the trumpet" section of the first work. With the Deller Consort at their best and the Kalmar Chamber Orchestra, this set provides one of the loveliest 67:44 minutes in my collection and richly deserves a place in yours.
