In Israel, where Jews from all over the globe arrive seeking refuge and new lives, a young keyboardist/composer/producer/arranger named Idan Raichel sought out seventy multinational musicians and began recording with them in his basement studio. As he set about mixing Ethiopian and other African Jewish traditions with home-grown Hebraic, Yemenite, and Arab styles, Old Testament Psalms, and even Caribbean vocals and rhythms, he initially had little hope of ever seeing the sessions released commercially. But he ended up with not one but two precedent-setting, huge-selling albums, from which the present CD was deftly cherry-picked. Opening with a majestic, multi-voiced Ethiopian chant, the 12 selections here make ample use of ethnic-based traditions and instruments. But although the songs share an edifying spiritual depth, they are nonetheless modern pop in the best sense, accessible and chock-full of catchy melodies. For example, on "Be'Yom Shabbat" (On Sabbath), the vocals--one wavering and prayerfully soulful and the other more straight-ahead--are couched in a cutting-edge reggae context, complete with sampled voices and electronic flourishes. Despite his commitment to eclectic sources and unusual juxtapositions, Raichel obviously has a happy way with a hook and no scruples whatsoever about having fun with it. --Christina Roden

Album Description

The Idan Raichel Project is the brainchild of Israeli keyboardist, composer, producer, and arranger Idan Raichel, who invited over 70 different musicians from a wide variety of backgrounds to participate in the recordings. In particular, Raichel has long been fascinated by the music of Israel's growing population of Ethiopian Jews, and many songs feature members of Israel's Ethiopian community. The recordings also include Arab musicians, traditional Yemenite vocalists, a toaster and percussionist from Suriname and a South African singer, among others.

The Project released its first album in Israel in 2002 and quickly became one of the biggest success stories in the history of Israeli popular music. The haunting Ethiopian chorus of the first single, "Bo'ee" (Come With Me), sounded completely unlike anything most Israeli's had heard before. The groundswell of interest propelled the album to heights rarely seen in the local music scene and firmly established Idan Raichel as a new type of Israeli pop star. Now a musical icon in the Israeli community worldwide, The Idan Raichel Project has performed to sell-out crowds in prestigious venues in Paris, Brussels, New York, Los Angeles, Singapore and beyond.

The international release of The Idan Raichel Project's recordings on the new record label Cumbancha promises to introduce a wide new audience to the electrifying work of this unique musical collective. The Project offers a new vision for how Israelis, their neighbors in this volatile region, and people all over the world, can cherish their individual cultural traditions, celebrate their differences and through respectful collaboration create new and inspiring expressions. "Our ability to live in peace with one other depends on our learning to appreciate and respect each other's differences," notes Idan. "The way forward is not by trying to change your neighbor, but by accepting him and recognizing that we are all looking for the same things in life: bread, water, spirit, respect and love."

Deluxe international version is enhanced with three music videos and other special features.

I'm not going to go into great detail, since others have already eloquently described these musicians. I just want to say that the music of the Idan Reichel (Raichel) Project is soul-moving. I have never heard music like this and from the moment I heard the first album (Haproyekt Shel Idan Rechel), I was completely hooked. I saw the band in concert a few years ago and it was easily the best concert I've ever been to. So buy this CD!

5 out of 5 stars The modern Rumi - simply the best in world music.......2007-03-19

This is the first time i've been moved to write a review on Amazon.
Let me start by saying that I would buy anything that has Idan's name on it - simply because it has his name on it.
I don't remember when I was so moved by music as I am each time I listen to his music. If you can get the translation to the songs, by all means, go ahead. The lyrics are amazing. I was lucky enough to see them in concert in Los Angeles. It sounds silly but there was so much talent and love projected from the stage - really a different experience.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2007-02-06

I bought this c.d. after hearing it on NPR. I really enjoy the music, which is soulful and exotic. A very good c.d. to have some nice dreams to. A few music videos accompany the c.d. and there are lyrics inside for those of us who can't speak the languages. I would recommend this to anyone who likes world music or is looking to try out world music. Track 4 is definitely a highlight. Idan is supremely talented at mixing these different artists together and making a seamless, beautiful blend.

5 out of 5 stars Eclectic.......2007-01-20

Idan Raichel is amazing. He is diverse, international and at the same time, brings cultures together. He uses Israeli, African and Old Testament text and makes them sound as if they had always belonged together. I recommend him to everyone of any age.

5 out of 5 stars Family music bonding.......2006-07-18

My two boys (age 2 and 7) LOVE this CD. We play it almost on a daily basis and they dance around all over the house to it. After a year, it still has this effect to them. Their favorite track is the 2nd one. I rarely get to listen to the whole CD through before they are jumping around asking for "TRACK 2! TRACK 2!"

This is by far my (our) favorite Putumayo compilation!

5 out of 5 stars A cocktail party for the ear.......2006-06-14

I received this CD as a gift from my younger sister&I STILL enjoy it.It's worth every listen.

This CD kicked off Putumayo's Lounge series, giving it an auspicious start. There are tracks I enjoy more than others, but it isn't a weak album;there aren't fillers. The best tracks are those by Pink Martini,Nicola Conte,Jasmon,Mo'Horizons,Gotan Project,Hamid Baroudi,Montefiori Cocktail,Arling&Cameron, and Blue Asia.Mau Mau&Dissidenten aren't my favorites;as you can see,99% of the CD is pure perfection.

The music uses a variety of styles.Nicola Conte,Jasmon,as well as Arling&Cameron use Bollywood as inspiration."Shiva's Daughters" is loveably cheesy.Hamid Baroudi&Blue Asia make haunting Middle Eastern melodies.Mo'Horizons&Gotan Project have more Latin flavors.Montefiori Cocktail turns a Brazilian bossa nova tune into kitschy bliss.Pink Martini from Portland,Oregon (being from Oregon,I'm proud of them)gives a nod to chanson.

This CD is intoxicating;it's a musical margarita.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD for Variety and Fun Listening.......2006-05-25

I have had this CD for a while and I really enjoy it. I actually play it quietly in the background when I teach Pilates and the class LOVES it....every time I use it at least one person comments on my "great" music...I always share the title with them. Great music is meant to be shared!!

4 out of 5 stars Definitely recommend.......2005-09-02

Putamayo always puts out great albums, and this one has a great beat, especially good in the background when you have people over.

5 out of 5 stars Great music.......2005-04-17

Putumayo's "World Lounge" had only one drawback, as does their other CDs, and that's that it's too short. This CD spans around an hour, with 11 songs, and I think that's way too short for a compililation like this. That aside, this is a great CD, filled with some of the biggest stars and Hits of Europe and Asia. If you're not a fan of HouseBeats or Techno, I don't recommend you purchase this. If, however, you are, then buy away!

Album Description

Dakini Lounge marks Indo-Jazz innovator Prem Joshua's first encounter with DJ science. Here, an eclectic collection of cutting edge mixologists including Karsh Kale, Sean Dinsmore (The Dum Dum Project), Joi and Dharma Dogz (of Waterbone) shed new light on Joshua's signature sound, translating his East-West alchemies into stunning dub, chill and dance floor masterworks.

Prem Joshua has come a long way from the 18-year-old German rocker, mind blown by a Ravi Shankar performance, answering a mysterious call from a faraway place. While spending the better part of 20 years in India (where he has sold well over 50,000 records), Joshua has developed a unique musical style employing sitar, Indian flutes, saxophone, electronica and tarana-style singing that artfully—and skillfully—bridges the gap between traditional Eastern sounds and Western jazz forms, prompting the Times of India to dub him "the new guru of East-West fusion music."

Dakini Lounge marks the next logical progression in Prem Joshua's storied career. Placing the master musician's songs in the able hands of these modern day studio mavens presents new interpretations and directions for the many listeners already in love with Prem Joshua's music while introducing him to an ever wider audience.

The dual assault of TV and rock & roll in the 1950s caused many casualties, among them swing music, radio, and a vital Yiddish-American culture. This wonderful project (and its companion 10-part National Public Radio documentary series) celebrates a time when those three institutions joined together to form a powerful force of their own. Producers Henry Sapoznik and Yair Reiner re-create Yiddish radio's golden age of the 1930s through the 1950s with a combination of klezmer music, "Yiddish swing," and commercial jingles culled from vintage 78s as well as radio transcriptions (once the property of longtime TV host Joe Franklin). It's a fascinating story of a time when Jewish culture thrived in its new home, but within is buried a different story: one of assimilation. The once-beloved traditional klezmer sounds of Eastern Europe (represented here in the work of Dave Tarras and Naftule Brandwein) were slowly replaced by "Yiddish swing," a mostly successful attempt to update traditional Jewish pop and folk songs in the fashionable swing style--or, as Sapoznik puts it, "playing downtown Jewish music in an uptown style." The need (or perhaps desire) for acceptance is revealed in both performer names (the Bagelman Girls became the Barry Sisters) and in "nonethnic" product spots for essentially "ethnic" products. Tellingly, it was the Midwestern Andrews Sisters' 1937 hit reading of "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen" (originally from a Yiddish play) that set off an explosion of Yiddish and American cultural cross-pollination. It represented the peak of Yiddish cultural influence in America--and as it turned out, the beginning of that culture's demise. For most, Music from the Yiddish Radio Project will be an endearing and enlightening history lesson, but for many others, it will be a bittersweet nostalgic journey through a time that remains so vivid in memories, yet feels like 1,000 years ago. --Marc Greilsamer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Yiddish Radio Project.......2007-01-04

Charming, delightful, and surprising, it evokes and energizes dim memories and resurrects the full emotional impact of memories still fresh. And LEVINE MIT DEIN FLYING MACHINE was startling in its evocation of a time when Jews were desperate for acceptance, and went to great efforts to memorialize the accomlpishments of Jewish Americans in song and otherwise, no longer content to remain outside looking in. I bought several CD's and gave them as gifts, which were big hits with all.

5 out of 5 stars transported back in time.......2006-03-09

Fantastic CD. Really takes you back in time. Not only good music but great fun and had me chuckling away. Wish there was a series of them. Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars Brings back my chlidhood.......2003-04-21

Listening to this make me feel 12 years old again.

5 out of 5 stars Heaven.......2002-07-25

This swing and klezmer collection combines many forms of mastery, not least the kitschy commercials and jingles. Between numbers, listeners are enticed (in Yiddish, as they would have been on an hour-long Yiddish radio show) to buy everything from Adler's elevator shoes and Manischewitz Matzo to Joe and Paul's clothing and Ajax. Of course, many products and stores hawked here have long since bit the dust. But the music is timeless right down to a couple of Chasidic niguns--nonsensical words sung as prayer--one doubling here as a station identification. --"Ya ba ba, ya ba ba bye, WBVD."

My favorite piece is Dave Tarras' rendition of Second Avenue Square Dance, a piece of divine klezmer, braiding alto and soprano clarinets into musical silk. But Abe Ellsteins's Orchestra rendition of Die Goldene Khasene comes a close second. And one cannot but smile at the Barry and Andrews Sisters' jazzy but melodious harmonies.

Each of the 34 cuts on this disc offers a kind of elegance, whether peddling the most pedestrian products or gliding through a Naftule Brandwein serenade. Treat yourself to a small piece of heaven. Alyssa A. Lappen

5 out of 5 stars Liquid Chicken Soup.......2002-07-24

I am Scotch/Irish and love Klezmer music, and I have a dear adopted "mom" I love also. She was feeling a little stressed one day, and I put the new CD on. The far-away look in her eyes, the way she started dancing a little as she sat in her chair, the joy in her face as she laughed and listened and translated the Yiddish into English for me and laughed some more--listening to that album together really was "liquid chicken soup"-- both for her and for me. Like she said to me, "There's nothing on TV to watch that isn't filthy, and people don't sing today-- they scream and you can't understand them-- but this! This is music!"

I agree completely! :)

It was also a great pleasure to hear Klezmer favorites that are performed by our local "The Best Little Klezmer Band in Texas" in the "originals".. to hear the continuity l'dor v'dor. :)

What's up with this record being on import? You can't get it domestically anymore? That would be a crying shame. Check the remixing of Donald Byrd's Kofi by The Angel, Guru's work on Eddie Harris's Listen Here and Michael Franti on Lonnie Smith. Gift of Gab from Blackalicious gets a special mention for his rhyme on the Jacky Terrasson track Mixed Feelings, produced by The Angel. The list goes on. Pick this up before it disappears completely.

5 out of 5 stars Whoa!.......2002-04-24

I'm a 48 year old guy who has pretty much let hip-hop pass me by...which was just fine with me. But after hearing this Blue Note ReMix...wow...if your not jumping and moving to this music remixed from all time great jazz to hip-hop and acid jazz, you need new battiers for your hearing aid. Great!

3 out of 5 stars Hip-Hop's History Lesson on Jazz......(3.5 stars).......2002-04-06

Hip Hop fans and Acid Jazz historians take note: The Blue Note Remix Project is a classic album released prior to the tidal wave of many 'Various Artist' acid jazz CDs and is definitely an album to be noted as an originator. The CD is based upon many famous jazz songs and has an impressive line up of album credits. The original jazz tracks were taken and then mixed and with samples added by hip-hop DJs, are transformed into good head-bobbing compiliation. Looking at the track listing any jazz fan will recognize the names as staples in the Jazz world. Special notation should be given to the smooth female vocals on "Kofi" [#1], the hip-hop treatment of the muted horn on "Listen Here" [#4], the paris-esque vibe of "Friends & Strangers" [#5], and the Ernest Ranglin-like slide-guitar-vibing and electronic organ keyboard on "Summer Song" [#7] which emits the best overall vibe of the entire album; no need for lyrics on this song...it's old school jazz-cool. "Move Your Hand" [#8] has Caribbean-rooted hip-hop lyrics while giving tribute to Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay". "Montara" [#10]provides some sultry and soulful female vocals to go along jazztastic xylophone work; it almost makes you forget about the head-bobbing bass that persists in the track. This is not an album for dance-aholics. Rave kids need not apply either. Jazz hipsters and hip-hop old schoolers stand up and pay attention. This album draws clear lines as to where hip-hop and jazz have in common; where one takes from the other and where the other is partly-based on the composition and history of it's counterpart. Hip-hop fans who think the "bling bling" is where it's at should take a history lesson. Ready? Class is in session....

5 out of 5 stars Very Inventive.......2002-02-16

I didn't know what acid jazz was until I listened to this CD. It proves that rap song producers are the best remixers in the music business. I'm still waiting for the follow-up.

4 out of 5 stars THIS IS REAL ACID JAZZ.......2001-09-07

This CD sets a standard for Acid Jazz Producers. It blends elements of hip/hop, rap and dance without destroying the original works. In fact I think they were able to enhance many of the tracks on this album thereby exposing a new generation of listners to the works of these great trend setting original artists. It really shows you that this "acid jazz" thing is really nothing new. It started long before many of the purchasers of this CD were born!

5 out of 5 stars F.A.N.T.A.S.T.I.C.!.......2006-02-02

I've got the original music (including v2 and v3), the books (the best is Heitland's The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Book; still in print);
the 22 VHS tapes issued in the early 1990's (a haphazard collection issued in no particular order of episodes that boasted famous guest stars). Can I please get the whole series on DVD? I have not seen Mother Fear toying with Illya (The Children's Day Affair) in over 40 years.

5 out of 5 stars At LAST the complete series ORIGINAL soundtrack, the wait is over!.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

5 out of 5 stars Indian Eastern Techno Fusion Dance/ Power Yoga.......2004-06-01

This CD is a creative mix of funky rhythmic grooves. Can dance to it, or do a vigorous power vinyasa yoga to it. It is a wonderful blend of traditional eastern instruments and sounds, including "eastern voice" singing, with modern techno beats. I loved it. Listen to the samples - they give you a good flavor for the music so you can see if you like it or not before you buy.

5 out of 5 stars Asha Puthli is...........2004-02-07

...the female singer on some of the songs on this discs. Some years ago she had a huge Hit with "The Devil is loose" and her Disco LP "L'Indiana" was famous at Studio 54.

That alone are 5 Stars! Shes just GREAT and has one of the most beautiful female voices in the world.
Go to ashaputhli.com to know more about her.

Stunning beats and samples. I've fallen in love with this album.

    5 out of 5 stars Highest Quality.......2002-10-17

I just saw these guys on the BBC' Network East and tried to find the songs they did there. There was some rapper (Shanti?) on with them - but these versions of the music don't have him on it. I like it anyways but hey guys how about a rapper album of this mate? Still like this though. Cheers.

    5 out of 5 stars Very sensual.......2002-01-22

Love this CD. I love the mixture of indian real traditional sounds and modern beat. Real percussion, sitar, organ, voices come in very smoothly. It is all layed out and thought of very good, quality of the work is incredible. Very worth listening. It will put you in the mood you would like to be in, you can meditate, practice yoga, think, make love or dance, it will all fit into the rythm.
