Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Valentina Ponomareva.......2006-05-29

This CD would appeal to those who enjoy Russian music, and especially Russian folk or gypsy music. These songs are traditional, and are all sung in the Russian language.

Valentina Ponomareva has a clear and strong voice, and sings with great emotion. I found her selection of songs to be interesting. there were the familiar songs such as Dark Eyes (ochi chyorniye), and others that were less common.

I like the way that Valentina puts her emotions into her singing. For instance, the song "Day and Night" (Tolko raz, bivayet vzhizni stretche) is a sad song of unrequited love, poignant in its own right. When Valentina belts it out, it becomes a genuine tear-jerker. I like how she can wring every last bit of feeling from the songs she sings.

Gene Technology and Social Acceptance

Editorial Reviews
Book Description
Gene Technology and Social Acceptance uses gene technology to illustrate the complex issues that arise when a new technology appears in society. The authors examine the economic, legislative, environmental, social, ethical and philosophical issues that accompany a new technology that brings new knowledge and requires new skills that displace old ways of thinking and acting. This creates a paradigm shift that brings a new structure to society, bringing new laws, values, economic alliances, and new social dilemmas. The authors suggest ways of achieving social acceptance of gene technology and other new technologies. They devise methods of applying critical analysis to understand the motivation of those affected so that the decision-making process of those in society can be understood. Thus, those introducing the technology can reassess their values, reconsider the distribution of resources, and set new priorities.

    Editorial Reviews
    Book Description
Taking on the bombshell spies, slayers, witches and assassins who are fighting their way into movies and television shows everywhere, "Girls Who Bite Back" examines what these new role models for young women are really about.

Emily Pohl-Weary puts her unique stamp on the field of speculative fiction and pop culture in this one-of-a-kind anthology of short fiction, cultural analysis, comics and original artwork. Contributors dissect the best and worst supergirls, envision new role models, explore the ugly side of girls who fight back and even create a do-it-yourself guide to being a superhero.

With rich insight as well as wry irreverance, "Girls Who Bite Back" cuts through the layers of the new 'female power,' questioning its corporate origins and investigating issues of race and sexual orientation. "Girls Who Bite Back" shows us how far we've come, how far we have to go, and gives us a sneak peak at a future where all girls bite back.

    About the Author
Emily Pohl-Weary co-authored the Hugo Award-winning book about her grandmother's life, "Better to Have Loved: The Life of Juith Merril." Merril, the 'little mother of science fiction,' wrote gender-bending science fiction in the 1950s. "Better to Have Loved" has been praised in 'The Globe and Mail', 'Asimov's Science Fiction', 'The San Francisco Bay Guardian' and 'The Village Voice'.

Pohl-Weary has been editing 'Kiss Machine: A Conga Line of Arts and Culture' since 2000, amd is a regular writer for Toronto's ententainment weekly, 'Now', among other magazines.

    Book Description
Unwilling to see Asian American women silenced beneath the noisy discourses of feminists, cultural nationalists, and Eurocentric historians, Wendy Ho turns to specific spoken stories of mothers and daughters. Against reductive tendencies of scholarship, she places her own conversations with her China-born grandmother and her U.S.-born mother and her own readings of other Asian American women writers. She finds in the writings of Maxine Hong Kingston, Amy Tan, and Fae Myenne Ng not only complex mother-daughter relationships but many-faceted relationships to fathers, family, community, and culture. Always resisting the simplistic explanations, "In Her Mother's House" brings Asian American women's experience as mothers and daughters to the forefront of gender and ethnicity.
