Book Description
Gene Technology and Social Acceptance uses gene technology to illustrate the complex issues that arise when a new technology appears in society. The authors examine the economic, legislative, environmental, social, ethical and philosophical issues that accompany a new technology that brings new knowledge and requires new skills that displace old ways of thinking and acting. This creates a paradigm shift that brings a new structure to society, bringing new laws, values, economic alliances, and new social dilemmas. The authors suggest ways of achieving social acceptance of gene technology and other new technologies. They devise methods of applying critical analysis to understand the motivation of those affected so that the decision-making process of those in society can be understood. Thus, those introducing the technology can reassess their values, reconsider the distribution of resources, and set new priorities.

Walter P. von Wartburg is Head of Corporate Communications at Novartis and Professor of Public Health Policy at the St. Gall Graduate School of Economics, Business, and Public Administration. Julian Liew is a communications manager with a major chemical company in Germany.

    About the Author
    Emily Pohl-Weary co-authored the Hugo Award-winning book about her grandmother's life, "Better to Have Loved: The Life of Juith Merril." Merril, the 'little mother of science fiction,' wrote gender-bending science fiction in the 1950s. "Better to Have Loved" has been praised in 'The Globe and Mail', 'Asimov's Science Fiction', 'The San Francisco Bay Guardian' and 'The Village Voice'.

    Pohl-Weary has been editing 'Kiss Machine: A Conga Line of Arts and Culture' since 2000, amd is a regular writer for Toronto's ententainment weekly, 'Now', among other magazines.

    Unwilling to see Asian American women silenced beneath the noisy discourses of feminists, cultural nationalists, and Eurocentric historians, Wendy Ho turns to specific spoken stories of mothers and daughters. Against reductive tendencies of scholarship, she places her own conversations with her China-born grandmother and her U.S.-born mother and her own readings of other Asian American women writers. She finds in the writings of Maxine Hong Kingston, Amy Tan, and Fae Myenne Ng not only complex mother-daughter relationships but many-faceted relationships to fathers, family, community, and culture.
