Give Him Cornbread, Live! [Live]

This posthumous release from one of Cajun music's most popular acts is a delight, an excellent reminder of why Beau Jocque was so popular. Dissatisfied with traditional zydeco, he created a kind of fusion, incorporating various other styles from straight-ahead blues to rock & roll. Give Him Cornbread (also the title of one of Jocque's greatest hits) provides a fairly comprehensive sample of this, and it's a rollicking good time, to boot. Jocque was very good at what he did, and on this recording, the band is tight and enthusiastic. Recorded on zydeco's home ground of southern Louisiana and eastern Texas, this performance has the fiery energy so essential to good zydeco, plus several highly inventive moments; among them, a fascinating cover version of John Lee Hooker's classic "Boogie Chillen," not to mention Big Joe Williams's "Baby, Please Don't Go." There's plenty of traditional music as well, though, with lots of original songs (personal favorite: the slow, sultry, bluesy "Brownskin Woman"), plus material from Jocque's most direct influence, Boozoo Chavis. With Jocque's death, zydeco lost one of its greatest innovators; Give Him Cornbread does nothing to belie that notion. --Genevieve Williams

4 out of 5 stars excellent.......2001-06-21

i was lucky enough to see beau twice before he died. the first time was at the fabulous rock and bowl in new orleans, where he was staging yet another battle with boozoo chavis. imho, virtually all music (zydeco, blues, classical...) is best experienced live. beau was a big man with a big sound and a big voice. this cd comes as close as possible to capturing the intensity of his performances.

GIT IT, BEAU!!!

5 out of 5 stars YOU KNOW CALI!.......2000-08-25

I'd just like to say that the album is cool. It features original and traditional tracks which I think younger musicians should focus on. It keeps the Creole French in the music which is also a good feature on the album. I definitely have to give Beau Jocque his props. He was one of the greatest accordianists that ever lived. He name will definitely go down in History

"Give Him Cornbread: Live" is a collection of some of the most fiery and exciting live performances by one of Zydeco's most fiery and exciting performers. The last recording of the late Beau Joques captures all of the energy and power of the passionate artist, seizing the listener with a series of fast and furious performances which cpature the spirit and power of Zydeco music.
