Some music is celebrated for its elegant subtlety; Pink's slams you over the head. Four albums in, she's not changing her formula. I'm Not Dead touches on bulimia ("Stupid Girls"), war-mongering politicians ("Dear Mr. President"), teen angst ("Conversations With My 13 Year Old Self," "Runaway"), overheated pickup artists ("U + Ur Hand"), and gross materialism ("I Got Money Now"). None of it, in other words, is for featherweight listeners. Then again, none of it suits eggheaded college tastemakers either. Where this translates, then, is with those willing to man up and embrace what makes Pink Pink: her spellbinding ability to render rebelliousness in all the many colors of the rainbow. Neil Young-inspired acoustic guitar is sketched into "The One That Got Away," but it's just as quickly scribbled over by Joan Jett-style ranting (on "Long Way to Happy") and Janis Joplin/Joss Stone-fueled howling (on "Who Knew"). Even R&B gets its turn ("I Got Money Now"). The album also includes appearances from the Indigo Girls, who duet on "Dear Mr. President," and Pink's father, who joins for the hidden track "I Have Seen The Rain." Pink pulls all of this off, and probably without even breathing hard. She's not dead. --Tammy La Gorce

4 out of 5 stars Pink Rocks It.......2007-07-17

First, I think Pink just has a raw power to her voice that so many of the other pop starts don't have. Second, she sets herself apart by having tracks with relevant topic, a couple of ballards and then tunes you can dance too. Lasly, she deserves at least music award nominations.

5 out of 5 stars love it, I've played it a lot!.......2007-07-14

LOVE HER! Tracks 7 8 and 9 are continually played in my car. I love the whole album including the song with her dad (no credit though, why not?). She's real, shares a lot in her lyrics, and real artists are hard to come by these days.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic discovery!.......2007-06-28

I never was a fan of hip hop/dance/rap music, so I never really paid attention to Pink. I'll be the first to admit that was a big mistake. I heard "Who Knew" on the radio and was absolutely bowled over! I immediately went out and bought the album based on that one song. Turns out the album is full of fantastic musical gems. I didn't realize she changed her style to more of a rock/pop style. "Stupid Girls" is a great social statement (and totally made me think of Paris Hilton). "Who Knew" is one of my favorite songs of all times. "Long Way to Happy" is so catchy and awesome, it's my 2nd fave on the album. "Nobody Knows", "Dear Mr. President" and "I Got Money Now" are all great slowed down songs. I almost cried the first time I heard "Dear Mr. President". Extremely political and so very true, beautifully sung and deserves a lot of attention. "U + Ur Hand" and "Leave me Alone" are fun and full of attitude.

I'd like to add that not only is this album awesome, but I finally found out that Pink is an incredible vocalist and performer. Based on that, I ended up buying Misunduztood and there are several songs on that album I loved as well. I just wish I had noticed Pink long before this! Buy the album, you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-06-10

Great album! Pink has really shown some great range! This cd is way beyond some "Stupid Girls".

Product Description

Sci-fi rock superstars Warp 11 are back with their much-anticipated fourth studio album, "It's Dead, Jim". From the raw power of "Belt Buckle Tractor Beam", the Ramones-inspired "Tribbles and Ecstasy", the Christian rock anthem "Beam Me Up to Heaven" and the somber trip-rock journey of "Trekquiem", the wickedly funny Warp 11 is clearly at the top of their game. Warp 11 recorded the new release in their hometown Sacramento, California with co-producer Joe Johnson (Cake, Deftones). The album was mastered by Jason Livermore (Ataris, Less Than Jake, Rise Against).

4 out of 5 stars Love the band, but this one fell a little short for me..........2007-06-28

Just as the title of this review suggests, I LOVE Warp 11. They have an extraordinary talent for witty lyrics and great music in all styles they attempt. I was a little disappointed in this release if only for the fact that the previous albums have offered hilarious lyrics that were cleverly structured. This album contains a few of those gems (I'm Dead Jim, Trekquiem, Belt Buckle Tractor Beam, and others) but half the songs seem to be forced, almost disjointed. Red Alert has to be my favorite CD, but seriously, anything from them is good.
Warp! Warp! Warp! Warp! Warp!...Rock on...

5 out of 5 stars The Best CD Ever!.......2007-06-10

This is by far the BEST CD Warp 11 has ever released!!! I didn't think it could get much better than their last CD, Red Alert, but I was wrong! Warp 11 does it again - they bring the humor, the lyrical genious, the catchy tunes, and the sex, drugs, and rockin rollin' FUN! And they're hot too! This is a must listen - I highly recommend it to anyone!!!

5 out of 5 stars Don't let the Star Trek theme fool you.......2007-06-10

Even if your not a fan of Star Trek you'll love the pure musical talent of Warp 11. If you listen to one new band this year make it be Warp 11. With great lyrics and a outsanding sound Warp 11 makes it so.

Nearly a decade into his career, Ice Cube remains at the forefront of gangsta rap--but when it comes to manipulating sounds, he sometimes seems one-dimensional, especially when compared with the likes of Snoop Doggy Dogg (who had a lot of help in that department from Cube's old N.W.A. mate Dr. Dre) and sample master Sean "Puffy" Combs. But on War & Peace, Vol. 1, Cube's first album in five years, the hip-hop renaissance man reestablishes himself as a kingpin in the studio as well as on the street. Every song is surrounded by minor-key melodies and moody flourishes that enhance the effect of the intimidating lyrics, and the overall sound of the mix is rich and deep. Cube doesn't stop there, however, adding touches such as a No Doubt sample loop on "War and Peace" and a queasy guitar riff on "Fuck Dying," compliments of neo-metal marauders Korn. Ice Cube plans to follow up The War Disc with The Peace Disc, which he says will be mellower and more ethereal, but for now, Cube remains the hardest in the game. --Jon Wiederhorn

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Ice Cube at his worst.......2007-06-14

Ice Cube was at his best in the days of Amerikkkaz Most Wanted, Death Certificate, The Preadator and Lethal Injection. He kept it gangsta but at least he slipped you some solid gems through the music. Unfortunately this album is not even touching those albums whether in content or production. Although I understand why he had to back down, I dont understand why would he make himself a laughing stock with this album. The Good: In the song Ghetto Vet(which was also in the I Got The Hook Up soundtrack) Ice Cube talks about being paralyzed by gun violence and songs like 3 Strikes You In and Penitentiary remind you vaguely of the old school Ice Cube. The Bad: Pushin Weight was a stupid single and Mr Short Khop sucks! Greed sucked on the Gang Related soundtrack and it sucks now. Ice Cube destroys any fond memories of Once Upon A Time In The Projects with a weak sequel and Cash Over *** will have tapping the skip button with the quickness. The Ugly: Dr. Frankenstein could have been the number 1 contender for the worst song on the album until......I heard the terrible F*** Dying(featuring Korn)! The worst rock/rap infusion ever made and what was Cube thinking making songs with Korn? Limos Demos and Bimbos and X-******* are Ice Cube at his sophomoric worst but as bad as they are they are pale in comparison to the grotesque If I Was F****** You. Bottom Line: This album is a disgrace to the west coast veteran and is Ice Cube's worst album ever. The production was lame and Ice Cube kept talking about the main stuff. Dont mistake this album as Ice Cube's best and all you bay-bay kids that keep saying that he stopped making good albums after The Predator need to check yourself. Lethal Injection will still be reached for after all these years when War And Peace Vol 1 will be catching dust like it should.

5 out of 5 stars An Underrated Disc From The Father Of Gangsta Rap (4.5).......2006-09-23

Ice Cube made a very solid return to the rap game after a 5 year hiatus with his War Disc, where he promptly confronts ghetto difficulties. While doing so, he reaffirms his status as a premier rapper in the game today with hard, angry rap deliveries over some very nice beats. Ice Cube his just returned now with his latest studio album "Laugh Now, Cry Later" too which boasts some great tracks as well.

"Ask About Me" is a powerful opener, with a vibing instrumental beat and Cube spitting his lyrics strongly. "Pushin' Weight" is a good track where Cube explains how he's still holdin' it down in the game with his rhymes. "Dr. Frankenstein" is another tight track featuring Mr. Short Kop for another appearance on the album. "War and Peace" sees Ice Cube suggesting that peace is needed for all and he states "Westside for life but still down with the East". "Ghetto Vet" may be my favourite rap cut on the album where Cube takes a setting of a hospital describing a scene of contemplating suicide while near death. "Greed" is a heavy gangsta cut to follow it up, then Ice Cube moves into lyrics about money with "Cash Over A**" and "The Curse Of Money." The last few songs on this album are some of the best, which include "Extradition", a track laced with a sweet beat, "Penitentiary" and "3 Strikes You In", an aggressive cut.

Overall, this is a fairly strong rap release from Ice Cube who doesn't touch on anything political but rather spits about the hood as usual in a variety of ways. Lyrically he most often on the mark and his voice sounds mature and very strong. Recommended to any Ice Cube fan.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best from Cube........2006-03-24

Well this album might not be as good as Death Certificate or The Predator but it still is a great album from Cube. When I first heard The War disc I liked it but not alot. I finally got around to hear the album again and I started to enjoy it more. Cube takes over as producer in the war disc and he does a good job at it too. Songs like Cash Over A$$ is one of my favorite songs on the album. X-B!%@#'s is another good track from cube. I understand alot of Cube fans not likeing the album much. When you hear Amerikkas Most Wanted, Death Certificate or Predator, he talks alot about racism, struggles in the hood, and violence. In The War Disc he talks the cost's of fame and money, example: Greed, The Curse of Money, and Limos Demos and Bimbos. Also he talks about all the haters and women going out being gold diggers, example: X-B!%@#'s and Cash over A$$. Some stuff he talks about the hood and violence, like Ghetto Vet, 3 Strikes You In, Once Upon A Time In The Projects 2, and Penitentiary. I recommend this album to anyone who likes Cube or is just a big Rap fan. Get this instead of The Peace album because that album isn't Ice Cube's best work. Can't wait for the new album Laugh Now Cry Later out June 6.

5 out of 5 stars ask about him.......2005-07-09

This is definitly old school cube this is gotta be his best cd it has his old feel witch is great. Its awesome heres a couple of my favorite songs on this one "Ask About Me" 10 out of 10. "Pushin Weight" 9 out of 10. "Dr. Frankenstein" 10 out of 10. "**** Dying" feat. KoRn 10 out of 10."war & peace" 10 out of 10 thats just a couple of the old school sick flowing songs on this kickass record if u like cube then definitly get war & peace vol. 1 (the war disc)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing...Williams is a comical Mastermind.......2007-05-16

Robin Williams is a genius. No matter what generation you are and what age you hear his comedy it's hilarious.
The only downside to this CD is that there are some parts where you just want to see what he's doing, but that's true for all comedy cds.

WONDERFUL
STUPENDOUS

5 out of 5 stars "Help Me Obi Ron, Help me Obi Ron...".......2004-12-09

I received this cassette (yes cassette) for my 17th Birthday in 1988 after seeing this special on HBO when my family first had cable.

This special made me appreciate Williams' talent in standup and is an unforgettable performance at the Met in New York City. This routine won Williams a Grammy.

What is great about this special is that it reminds us of what life was like during the Reagan Era and life during the 1980s. There are many jokes involving Reagan, Khadafi, and Gorbachev.

"Mr. Reagan, sir, excuse me sir, in the dictionary under redundant it says see redundant."

"I just snorted my stocks man! Inflation! I'm loaded now!"

There are many quotable lines from this show.

This show is not for children due to mature content and language.

If you are a fan of Robin Williams' stand up routines, this CD is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Robin at his best!!.......2004-11-16

Absolutely HILARIOUS!!! I've been a huge Robin Williams movie fan for a long time. It's nice to hear how he got started in stand-up comedy. This recording is laugh-out-loud funny! You have to know some '80s trivia to understand some of it (he jokes about Reagan and Kadafi), but most is about topics we can all relate to. It's all so funny because it is all so TRUE!!! He does cuss a lot, but that's part of his personality and adds to the humor. This is a must-buy for all Robin and stand-up fans!

5 out of 5 stars I've never laughed so hard in my life!.......2004-09-15

Ive always been a fan or Robin Williams, and this CD just proves why Ive always been a fan. The man knows how to hackle the audience, hes a natural at comedy. whether youve done drugs or not, drank, have kids, or not... its down right halarious!!! The funiest parts are when he's talking about sex... you know everything he says is absolutely true whether you want to admit it or not!! Ive never done drugs a day in my life, and his drug rendition is fall off your seat, piss in your pants halarious! If you don't have a sense of humor, you will still laugh at this cd. if youre from another country, you might not know the american way of comedy. hes nothing like monty python. hes so much better!!!! when youve heard/seen this skit, get live on broadway for even more laughs about michael jackson, osama bin laden and so forth!!! thats even better than live at the met!!!! hope this helps! :)

1 out of 5 stars Spend the Night Listening to Someone Else, Very Disapointing!.......2003-05-08

This CD isn't that funny and at all and is very disappointing considering Robin Williams is usually a very funny comedian. Laughs are very far in between. Robin talks about the Opera House he is performing at, ballet compared to football, fatherhood, childbirth and other topics which may be interesting to a small number of fans but these topics are not broad enough to appeal to the average fan. This CD may be funnier if you have kids and can maybe relate to the jokes, but they're definitely not funny if you don't have kids.
If Robin Williams was as not as high a profile comedian then the listener's expectations may not be as high but he is, has told some funny stand up jokes in his time so therefore expectations of a great laugh from forking out money for his album are extremely high. For sensational stand up comedy albums by big name comedians try Steven Wright's I have a Pony, Eddie Murphy's self titled album or Jeff Foxworthy's You Might Be a Redneck If.........

You can say a lot about Curious George, I simply love his foul mouthed style

4 out of 5 stars The Godfather of cantankerous liberal humor!.......2006-07-10

This is the old school Carlin of 15 years ago. If you love George Carlin and follow his career this CD is the emerging George for the new millennium. As always he is a cantankerous liberal that mocks the outer ridge of social behavior. Carlin is not just a great comedian, but a great thinker. Let's face it he helped form the careers of Bulishi and everyone who came through Second City. He is the one of the Godfathers comedy. And he is funny, nasty, rough, and thought provoking.

This is a great gift for a liberal guy in his 50's who remembers that Carlin actually HAS made a political contribution to our society through his work on free speech. If you have no idea what to get your uncle, brother, or father for his 50Th birthday get the whole set of George Carlin. This is also a library MUST for guys at college because it will perk up any a dorm or frat house. If you are a female this artist often feels rough, sort of psycho, and angry bitter.

RICH CHICKS specializes in media that is purchased by women. We read hundreds of books every year and are serious about or recommendations. We review materials that are of interest to our female demographic. We do not get a kick-back or commission for our reviews so they are left as an impartial judge.

5 out of 5 stars Not only funny, but important.......2006-01-08

It takes serious talent to make the analysis of language hold people's attention in stand-up, but Carlin mastered that before this album was made. Here he goes one step further by clearly outlining his philosophy about language, drawing several audacious lines in the sand. And he actually challenges the system in such a way that this album is important beyond its comedic value. That is, he adresses his persecution by the FCC (Federal Censorship Commitee). With all the insight of Lenny Bruce and a surprisingly humble tone, he rebukes their hypocritical acts. Thanks largely to this album, Carlin is one of only 3 or 4 comics in this century who really made a difference in the battle for free expression.

4 out of 5 stars A fine scathing effort.......2005-03-15

Anyone who has followed Carlin over the course of his career can observe his "downward spiral" into the world of cantankerous, irritable social criticism. As far as that goes, this CD is hilarious, but never at the expense of humor, unless you're offended - of course, even if you are, you might still be laughing. It's a different Carlin than the guy who brought us "Shoot" and "Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television", but hilarious nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars Getting It How U Live.......2007-06-16

There was a time when Cash Money had good albums from the artists on their roster and Hot Boys' Get It How U Live is one of them. Juvenile, Lil Wayne B.G. and Turk bring their unique styles of rapping to the table over Mannie Fresh(whose beats didnt sound as redundant then as they do now)production. This album has its vintage Hot Boys tracks like We On Fire, 50 Shots, Dirty World, Get It How U Live, Blood Thicker and Spit 'N Game. The Hot Boys also have their solo joints like Lil Wayne's Block Burner, Juvenile's Take It Off Your Shoulder, B.G,s I'm A Hot Boy and Turk's Infrared Dot. Also Bun B makes a guest appearance on I'm Com'n. Skip Material: B.G's I'm A Hot Boy and the On Tha Porch(part2)skit. Bottom Line: Hot Boys Get It How U Live is The Hot Boys best album before they got lazy and commercial. Unlike Guerrilla Warfare this album didnt have to grow on me. Standout Tracks: WE ON FIRE, 50 SHOTS SET'S IT OFF, BLOCK BURNER, NEIGHBORHOOD SUPERSTAR, DIRTY WORLD, GET IT HOW U LIVE, INFRARED DOT, BLOOD THCKER and SPIT 'N GAME

5 out of 5 stars And the star is..........2006-01-15

I have to disagree with homie below me. Juve isnt the star. Surprisingly, Turk is! He's the best hotboy for this short period of time.
Still
Definately get this cd.

5 out of 5 stars The album that set if off!.......2005-09-05

This is the Hot Boys' first album as a group, and even though Cash Money Records had sold hundrieds of thousands of records before it as well, this was the record that gave them the Universal deal. Untill this album, the label was huge only in their region, and while it was enough to make Baby and his label rich, very few oustide the Dirty South had heard about CMR. Well, that album changed all that. It sold more than 400,000 copies independantely!... So, what's so special about this one?... It's the first time the four hottest rappers on the label united and worked together. This album was released in 1997, so all of them were VERY young: Juvenile was 22, B.G. was 17, Lil' Wayne was only 14(!) and Turk wasn't much older as well. Depite their young age, all of them menage to impress - each one having his own unique style. Juvenile is the star of course, the one who shines above all: His crisp delivery, hint of humour, and passionate truthfulness in his words have always made him a standout in a world filled with lackluster rappers. B.G. has got a darker, more gangsta oriented style, while rapping real calm and grimmy (almost with no emotions whatsoever). Lil' Wayne is a young teenager on this one, but his talent can't be ignored, especially on his first ever solo song "Block Burner" : his rap skills still unpolished and his voice is still kinda quite on this album, but the charisma and creative delivery are already there. Turk also impresses with his thugged out rhymes and overall mic presence. So, as you see all of the Hot Boys do a great job, even though some of them (Lil' Wayne and Turk) were just getting started (Juve and BG already had a few albums under their belts). And as usual, it was Mannie Fresh's awesome beats that stood up! There are 13 songs (+ 2 totally useless skits) on this album, and the production on them is flawless. Some of the beats are laid-back, some are harder, and some have a darker feeling to them (especially Lil' Wayne and BG's solo songs). Lyrically the boys don't dissapoint as well. To those ignorant so called "hip-hop fans" thinking CMR is only about flossing, you couldn't be more mistaken - the Hot Boys's rapping is all about gangsta rap, living in the streets, hustlin'. There are a few songs, that have a social and deep message as well. There are no "party-style" songs, and no songs about sex, big behinds or whatever. CMR is all about the streets on this one, they're hard-core to the fullest. Out of the 12 songs (+ 2 skits and a Big Tymers intro), you get a great solo song from each member, and the other 8 are all group efforts. B.G is missing on a few songs, since he had some drug problems at that time, but his presence is well-felt on the songs he's on. "Get It How You Live!" is one of CMR's best early releases, and the one that got the label that huge destribution deal with Universal Records. The album was released a year before "Back that a** up" and couple of years before "Bling Bling", and overall the album is just as good as the albums those huge singles were on. And to think that things only got better from that point on... The rappers' style improved and matured and even Mannie Fresh's beats got on an even higher level!... Bottom line is - this one is a classic, you should not miss it!

5 out of 5 stars This is the best hot boys album.......2004-12-16

This is the best hot boy album eventhough the second one is just as good. The beats are on point and like always the lyrics are thugged out as hell. If you don't have this you need to get it.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Boys are the greatest.......2004-02-05

A lot people don't realize how good the Hot Boys really are because they have only heard radio singles. If you own any cash money CD, which I own a lot of, you realize that they talk about more than bling-bling and hoes. The Hot Boys in their prime were like a N.W.A for the south. Hardcore gangsta rap. They really put it down back then. I espescially like tracks 14 and 2 on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Has the Wu taken over the underground?.......2005-11-25

Ten years ago they were the most powerful force in Hip Hop. After experiencing an astonishing fall-off in recent years, it looks like the Wu Tang Empire has reinvented itself in the Hip Hop Underground circuit. It should be noted that this is not an official album but rather a Wu Tang-endorsed mixtape compilation by the soon-to-be-legendary underground DJ out of Queens, Mr. J-Love. This mixtape contains several recent releases from the Wu Tang from its original 9-member core to the farthest reaches of the Empire. Defintiely a must for true Wu Tang enthusiasts.
