Commercial and disappointing.......2000-12-19
If this CD has made this fantastic quartet known to a larger number of people, then, it's fine. But what a desappointment in terms of music ! A few interresting songs, but i can't feel any great inspiration in this commercial CD poorly surfing on the ethnic wave. A shame.
Interesting and Infectious Rhythms.......2000-10-31
When this recording was first released, it remained a best-selling classical CD for some time, even though it is not "classical music" in the strict sense of that term. But it is a grabber. It presents some very interesting compositions by contemporary African composers, that while different, are also listenable. Unless one's mind is totally closed to new sounds and new ideas, this is quite an enjoyable collection.
In addition to the African composers, which this CD brings to our attention, it has also served as an introduction for many of us to the Kronos Quartet, a talented group of musicians, who perform a varied repertoire. They are quite good and never boring, as these performances amply demonstrate.
Pieces that fit together a continent.......2000-08-29
More than just a compilation of great music by noted African composers, the album is a repository for the emotional richness of Africa. Each piece is lively, intricate and accessible. There is much joy here; the tracks are full of happiness, heat and nightfall. Also sorrow, but that's Africa, too. A friend gave this to me when I happened to be writing a book about Africa, and it became my soundtrack. I have given dozens of CDs to friends who love Africa. From "Sunset" by Foday Musa Suso to "Waterwheel" by Hamza El Din, "Pieces of Africa" is one of the great musical adventures of the past decade.
Buy this CD!.......2000-03-02
I largely consider myself an alternative rock fan and to describe my knowledge of classical music as "limited" would be kind. I first got to know Kronos when they covered Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" and had a video (which I saw once) on either VH1 or MTV. I was fascinated, so when they came to perform at my college (back in 1992) I went to see them. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. They didn't play, they didn't perform in the sense that most classical artists I've seen perform. It has one-half recital, one-half performance art.
So, I rushed out and bought a CD--fortunately it was "Pieces of Africa." I have since bought about half of Kronos's CDs, and all of their releases since, but this one ranks as my favorite. Why? It is joyful, uplifiting, and spiritual without being sentimental. It is a beautiful CD, rich in texture and melody. The quartet is often accompanied by vocalists, drummers, and other African musicians in a way that doesn't simply "feature" them, but integrates them. You can feel the collaboration among the artists.
Above all, this CD offers an accessible, non-threatening introduction to Kronos and their work. If you never explore beyond this CD, never buy Tan Dun or Night Prayers, your life will still be better for having heard this wonderful music.
inventive and lively.......1999-11-11
I especially like the quartet by Volans and waterwheel. But there are no bad pieces here and most are sprightly and inventive, with a few really beuatiful ones.

Those who have heard the Amandla! soundtrack will no doubt remember South African singer Vusi Mahlasela. His passionate, octave-leaping voice on "When You Come Back" sets a tone for the album, which adeptly documents the political and social music surrounding Nelson Mandela and the movement he led. In fact, Mahlasela actually sang at Mandela's inauguration, having been a veteran of many ANC rallies as well as a popular music figure. Signed by Dave Matthews to Ato, Mahlasela first domestic release collects 14 songs from his five South African albums. Some of The Voice's songs have a glossy world music sheen that isn't far from Peter Gabriel's recent work, but the album is balanced by songs in the more traditional and acoustic vein. Highlights include the bluesy "Red Song," which tells the story of three friends taking up arms for apartheid, the moody "Troubadour," and "Fountain," where Mahlasela's vocal gymnastics will thrill fans of Youssou N'Dour. This is a must for fans of African pop music. --Tad Hendrickson
Customer Reviews:
Amazing, new doors opened when I found this CD.......2007-03-23
His voice is everything that is said about it. Amazing, inspiring, beautiful.
I can't add much to the praise that has been said about this magical CD. I feel sorry for the people that may go their entire life without hearing this CD.
"When You Come Back" has quickly become one of my most listened to songs, and all time favorites.
All the struggle, beauty and hope that is characterized by South African music is embodied in this CD. A rare gem in every sense of the phrase.
I learn something everytime I listen to this - which is often!.......2007-02-13
Having been married to a white South African, I knew a little something about the history of South Africa. But these songs really taught me how aparteid was viewed through the eyes of the oppressed. I am in awe of their hopefulness and ability to forgive in the face of such long-standing oppression. I wish we had such poetry and hope in our music instead of the angry rap and otherwise bland lovesongs that come out of the music industry in America. I saw Vusi at Carnegie Hall a few years back and vowed to track down whatever he has recorded. I am never disappointed.
I've heard Josh Grobin's new version of "Weeping" and frankly it seems almost sacreligious to have a white American guy sing it. But I guess he couldn't resist the beauty of it and I'm happy that a wider audience might hear it - but I'm guessing they'll have no idea what it is all about. Pity.
An Amazing Collection.......2006-11-17
I just saw Vusi perform with the Putamayo Acoustic Africa tour and bought this CD there. Played it twice in a row the next day and almost daily since. This is a compilation of songs from his African releases and I cannot speak highly enough of it. Highly recommended to fans of Habib Koite and similar artists.....hauntingly beautiful, uplifting and full of the musical spirit that makes us all one people. Enjoy.....Kev
A magical African world.......2006-07-11
I purchased this cd when it first came out & not one week goes by that I don't return to its lovely melodies. If you're a fan of Ladysmith Black Mambazo you are sure to enjoy this recording.
Close but no cigar..........2005-04-25
I had the pleasure of hearing this entire CD several months ago and thought, "WOW! This stuff's great!", and at that point I would have given it the full 5-Star rating. So what happened? Well, I had the even greater pleasure of seeing Vusi perform in a small music hall last week, by himself (as in no band), and that experience was so great that it has sort of destroyed the pleasure of listening to my new (autographed) CD. :-( In my opinion, the band that accompanies Vusi on most (all?) of the tracks, while good, actually detracts from the soul and emotion of his message. Case in point, Vusi has released two different versions of "When You Come Back", one on the "Amandla!" soundtrack, and one on this CD. The version on Amandla! is a simple acoustic number that to me at least has far more impact than does the highly produced (to use another reviewers phrase) version on this album.
Will I still listen to this CD? You bet! However, every time I hear it, I'll be wishing for an "unplugged" version.

Bicentennial Military Music.......2007-03-28
The music from these three US Military Bands was originally released in 1977 as single Long Playing Records to celebrate the Nation's Bicentennial Celebration. It is missing the US ARMY BAND (which I regret) but otherwise the music is GREAT and the Bands are FIRST CLASS as you might expect. Except for the different services renderings of THE NATIONAL ANTHEM, no marches are duplicated. If you enjoy good foot tapping Martial Music...this 2-CD set is worth the price.
Disappointed listener.......2006-05-13
I have been listening to military band music for years, and am rarely disappointed. However, this compendium of music by the U.S. Navy, Army, and Marine bands and associated choral groups is not to my taste. Many of the arrangements are strange, and there is much too much vocal music when what I want to hear is the bands play. I would not have bought this album hhad I known beforehand what I know now.
Classic US Service Band Recordings!.......2005-08-10
Its nice to see these old RCA recordings brought out on CD. These were originally released on LP back in the early 1960s to help finance the Kennedy Center in DC. They were popular recordings then. Unfortunatley only three out of the original four are offered here. Missing is the US Army Band which also recorded as part of this series. The sound qaulity has been left largely as it was, which wes pretty good for early 1960s. The only problem with the original recordings was that they tended to sound poor on the inner tracks of the LP. Fortunately that problem no longer exists on CD. Due to the format there tends to be some repeat material here. How many times do we have to hear the national anthem played by each band! Still, there are some good selections played when these bands were in their prime and larger than they are today. Its good to see recordings being re-issued on US service bands other than Altissimo! which tends to use just in-the-can material from band libraries. Here we have the original stuff played in a manner which is no longer done today. For those seeking vintage recordings of US service bands you can't go wrong here.

Long lost.......2007-08-06
Not having listened to Dollar Brand on a friends LP some 25 years ago, it is brilliant to have tracked Abdullah Ibrahim down and with re-visiting the album Voice of Africa, the sounds are as wonderful as I remembered.
The old "Dollar Brand" stuff!.......2007-05-13
For those of you grooving to "Cape Town Fringe" back in the 70's, this is the first and only time I'm aware of it's cd release, under it's Euro name of "Mannenberg..." I had been told by a producer from that label that the masters from the "Cape Town Fringe" record were long lost. I can't vouch for the "original masters" tag most of us nut jobs like to see, but in listening to this CD and my original vinyl, it's the same, or at least so close that I couldn't isolate any real differences. The other inclusions on the disk are all worth it in their own way, with that unique swing of the early Ibrahim. Worth multiple purchases just in case you get generous and hand one to a friend after a night of sitting back and grooving.
A must for all Jazz Lovers from the Master of African Jazz.......2000-11-16
This remarkable album by Cape Town born Abdullar Ibrahim (aka Dollar Brand) epitomises the genius of this Jazz veteran. This album is the "story" an undaunted man who rose to greatest in a country in racial-turmoil. This story telling through the energy of Ibrahim and his Piano come to a head in the tear-jerking performance of Mannenberg: a reminder of days gone by and troubled times to all South Africans.
Like many jazz musicians, Ibrahim found most of his career success playing along the East Coast of the US - yet he never gave up his African routes and most of his work has an unmistakable African flavour to it. Perhaps that was why he has been so highly acclaimed. This album certainly encompasses this. This album works on all levels. It is critically commendedable, an uplifting story, and perhaps best of all: is unintrusive as background music.
Conclusion: A must for all Jazz Collections.
Triumphant, Transcendant Rapture From Across The Continents.......2000-10-29
Abdullah Ibrahim's music and message fly nimbly across cultures with wings on its feet. From the opening, joyously cacophonous strains of "Black Lightening" to the closing serenity of "The Pilgrim", this CD works on every level, pleasing the ears while nourishing the heart and spirit.
Listen to "Mannenberg Is Where It's Happening," and marvel at Mr. Ibrahim's township-meets-baroque harpsichord, in symbiotic call-and-response with Basil Coetzee's breath-defying, melodic sax solos. The effect is pure rapture.
This entire compilation exemplifies the commonalities of spirit and aesthetic that bind all humanity together. Irrespective of race, creed, or color, Mr. Ibrahim's delightfully transcendant hybrid of Ellingtonian piano jazz and African inflected rhythyms remind us that true communication is possible, and music may often be its most faithful messenger.
Recommended highly for music lovers of all persuasions!

Customer Reviews:
Elegant interpretation of some of the finest movie scores.......2006-11-01
I have had this CD for over 10 years and still love listening to it. In particular, his rendition of "On Golden Pond" makes you think that you are sitting on the banks listening to the peaceful rippling water.
The CD includes famous movie scores from "Schindler's List," "ET," and "Casablanca," but you might be surprised how much you enjoy the score from "The Firm" and other movies whose music were much better than the movies themselves.
Moody music.......2000-02-04
Very mellow piano solos, perfect for inspiring your dinner date to cling to you hoping that you will defend her from the heartless world.
