Ever wondered what was before Bach, Lully, or Palestrina?.......2007-04-29
During the days of the Renaissance, the madrigal was one
of the most popular musical forms and outputs. The King's Singers, a modern-day all male vocal group, demonstrate the authentic sound of which these 34 chosen madrigals may have been performed. In the Renaissance, in place of sopranos and altos, there were countertenors (men who sang falsetto in a feminine range). That's what these guys do; just listen to the first few and you'll automatically be transported back to this magical and sort of other-worldly time. If you've been to Renaissance fairs, it will make you think of those, too.
The King's Singers offer 34 well-chosen madrigals from composers like John Dowland, Hans Leo Hassler, Clement Jannequin and some composers who wished to remain anonymous. They are grouped by the different languages to show that the madrigal wasn't just the rage in Italy where it had originated but at various other places all over Europe, the hub of the music world. The Italian ones come first, then in English, French, Spanish and German. The best one in the set is "La Guerre" which runs 6 minutes, and is an incredible vocal showpiece. It's even very funny at times.
If you want to hear exactly how Renaissance madrigals sound, this is the real deal.

incroyable, "et Carole etait la".......2004-07-15
When I bought this CD on a bit of whimsy ("I have most everything else...mais pourquoi pas?") I had no idea how good it was.....it was hard to imagine surpassing the studio version of "chansons pur les pieds" or the earlier FGJ work....especially "en pluriel."
This set really is unbelievable, and hasn't left the Car CD player yet. As another reviewer wrote, the album works on a number of levels:
--First and foremost, JJG's music is fabulous, regardless of whether you know enough french to understand the words. My 7 year old son knows all the tunes, and it never fails to put a smile on his face.
-(previous reviewer also noted) great balance in the songlist between earlier works and "Chansons"
--The band is really TIGHT. The renditions of the songs were great, and surpassed much of the studio work. Also, I have come to think any band that has Michael Jones in it will be fabulous.
--There's no question the gigs were exciting, and JJG has immense rapport with his audience
--The album is fun! The packaging is great (love the illuminated slideshow)
--The spirit of Carole Fredericks was much in evidence, and their tribute very touching.
A wonderful introduction to Jean-Jacques Goldman.......2004-01-17
When I visited France for the first time in the summer of 2003, I saw Jean-Jacques on TV performing "Et L'on N'y Peut Rien," and I knew I had to have the CD. After I returned home it was the ONLY CD I listened to for four months. It never got boring and it never failed to satisfy. It always put me in a good mood. (It remains one of my favorite CDs.) You don't have to know French to appreciate this CD. (I only know a little.) Let the words of the most beautiful language in the world wash over you. Listen to the instrumental accompaniment. Un Tour Ensemble can be appreciated on so many levels. My only regret is that I wasn't at the concert where it was recorded.
For all Jean-Jacques fans;-).......2003-06-21
If you love JJG you will love this two-CD album too, as it redelivers the tour he gave in 2002. Not only does he play and sing most of his latest album's songs (Chansons Pour Les Pieds), but he also gives new interpretations of old favorites from the eighties like Petite Fille or Veiller Tard. The main difference with his former live albums is that in this one, he truly makes his audience a part of his music and the whole ambiance of the concert. For instance there is an entire track devoted to rehearsing with the audience their "part" for certain songs, and it's pretty cool.
Another aspect that strikes me everytime I listen to it is the transitions between the songs, that are really well-thought. For instance the introduction of "Ensemble" is a simple flute melody which comes from the end of the previous song (Tournent les Violons) which gradually weaves into the opening theme of Ensemble. And this is true for many songs and transitions.
Also, the much-missed Carol Frederick who passed away in 2001, was present in the concert with her voice and her picture on the slides shown. I think Jean-Jacques and his band gave her a real tribute in this concert.
From the opening song (Je Marche Seul) to the closing one (Puisque Tu Pars), both with his solo voice and guitar, the concert just spans too quickly and is well wrapped-up.
Finally I would say JJG made great song choices, and the combination between the "old songs" and the newer ones was just right. I was present at his concert and I must say that this album was for me, almost like a second concert :-)

THE introduction to secular renaissance music.......2005-03-09
There is not a global survey of secular music in Renaissance: every trend and national nuance is here. This CD compete for "The most varied musical program in history" prize!!!. King's singers produces a nice sound. Surely I like more the hilliard ensemble sonic landscape: they are more "hooty" and proyect more clearly the sound (with less vibrato) but never produced a more varied set like King's singers. If you have space for only 1 Renaissance CD, it MUST be this. You must purchase this cd: it is a reward for such an intelligent programme!!!!
A fun introduction to European madrigal styles!.......2002-11-28
Joined on about a third of the numbers by instrumentalists billed as the "Consort of Musicke", the King's Singers offer a variety of compositions from each country they "visit", some upbeat and others gently reflective. The vocalists are countertenors Jeremy Jackman and Alastair Hume, tenor Bill Ives, baritones Anthony Holt and Simon Carrington, and bass Colin Mason. Their presence and theatricality in interpreting the material are delightful, and these men blend together impeccably, with a clear, straight tone and flawless enunciation. You can actually understanding the words without reading along in the insert booklet (provided, of course, that you're familiar with the language being sung!) Favorites of mine from the thirty four tracks include the Italian "Lirum bililirum" and "Il bianco e dolce cigni"; the English "Of all the birds that I do know" and "Now is the month of Maying"; "La, la, la, je ne l'ose dire" and "Il est bel et bon" from France, "Tres morillas m'enamoran" from Spain; and the German "Tanzen und Springen". In addition to this release, this fine group has an extensive discography. Check out their other recordings too!
A great recording.......2002-07-25
All male voice with perfect technique. Some madrigals are sung a capella, though most of them with accompaniment. The accompaniment, on renaissance instruments, is perfect, just like the singing. Excellent renditions of Mateo Flecha's La Bomba and Gastoldi's Amor vittorioso. Highly recommended
A Terrific European Madrigal Sampling.......2002-03-23
Most madrigals one hears tend to be either in Italian or English. Not so on this album, perhaps one of the best European madrigal samplers (if not the only one)in existence. Some well known English and Italian madrigals can be found, of course. But the true treasure of this album is its inclusion of French, German -- and most rarely, Spanish -- madrigal offerings. Combine this repertoire, then, with the accurate sonorities of the King's Singers and one finds treasure unbounded. An album that is infinitely enjoyable. Liner notes and translations are included.
A masterpiece of Madrigals.......2001-09-02
I am a university student and a vocal performance major, and this album represents exactly what madrigal singing was at the time. It also contains a diverse array of languages from Italian to Englis to Spainish. Having worked with Simon Carrington personally i know that the styles of the madrigals on this album are accurate. Also, its just really fun to listen too! As an even bigger plus, its cheap for poor students! I highly recommend buying this.

Customer Reviews:
A great library builder, just a bit dull.......2006-08-06
'Complete Secular Music' by Guillaume Dufay is a great work to have if you are building a library of classical music. But, speaking for the amateur listener who happens to like old music, working your way through the five CDs makes you wish you had gotten the 'greatest hits' compilation. It turns out Dufay's liturgical music is much more interesting to my ears. This collection is basicly about 100 songs in French, which have little of the charm of more recent French chansoms or even a comparable selection of Shubert songs. I'm really happy to have this boxed set, but I will probably not listen to it very often.
Good but a bit outdated.......2000-07-08
I hate to be a spoilsport on the outstanding ratings of this set. It is certainly an invaluable collection of the secular songs, and as a musicologist interested in this repertory I'd hate to be without it. But some poor performance practices--for example, the failure to recognize that the introductory melismas are actually equipped with the opening vowel (and are hence vocal)--leads to bizarre consequences. One consequence is that there are introductory "instrumental" passages and "instrumental interludes" that make nonsense of the musical continuity in some pieces: continuous vocal performance is required. Dufay surely did not intend the strange alternation of instrumental and vocal passages heard in this recording, I think. The whole set needs to be redone in recognition of more recent performance research.
Consistently the best Dufay recording ever.......2000-02-11
To add to the splendid comments by the first reviewer -- this is quite possibly the best, most faithful/authentic/scholarly Dufay ever recorded. It's worth every penny (and at 30 bucks this is beyond a bargain for 96 chansons!) just to hear such masterpieces as: (10 on disc 1) 'Mon cuer me fait tous dis penser' -- possibly the most gorgeous chanson of the 15th century. Plus, to hear the whole corpus of secular music presented in one huge macro-performance is extremely instructive in crystalizing one's impression of Dufay's genius. His style strikes even (especially?) the modern listener as amazingly fresh and relevant -- the liner notes and complete texts are quite an oeuvre by themselves... a lovely anthology of period formes-fixes poetry! (And, I might add -- I find all the performers, including Timothy Penrose both masterly and scholarly in their interpretations.) This is a must buy for fans of Early Music and a worthy introduction to 15th century music for those who are unfamiliar with the period but wish to invest in a guaranteed winner. You won't be disappointed! Buy now!
-- Justin Weaver
A treasure.......1999-12-20
Grab this while it lasts! This is a reissue of a 1980 recording that will remain forever unsurpassed - both because its quality is so great, and also because no one in this day and age will dare to undertake such a massive project again. Think about it - the entire Dufay secular output! Listening to these songs, written more than 500 years ago, reveals how little has changed in the intervening centuries. Many styles and genres came and went, but the human impulse to express emotion in a song remained the same. This is why these old songs remain so appealing today. Dufay, who was possibly the greatest composer of his time, wrote most of his secular music in the fixed medieval forms (such as rondeau, virelais and ballade), but his songs transcend the formalities because he was such a remarkable melodist. Listen to such masterpieces as Vergene Bella or Donnes L'Assault a la Fortresse to know what I mean. The informative sleeve notes explain the characteristics of each style. The recording took into consideration the latest available musicological research into Dufay and his times. To cover the entire ground, some compositions are presented here in several different versions. Vocal and instrumental pieces alternate to provide variety (as the notes inform, the pieces with incomplete texts were not vocalized). The instruments (a typical medieval array) consist of recorders, flutes, dulcians, shawns, trumpets, rebecs and fiddles; plus lute, harp and clavichord used for continuo. The singers are excellent. The recording features half of the Hilliard (in its then-existing roster): Rogers Covey-Crump, Paul Elliott, Paul Hillier & Michael George. Tenor John Elwes contributes some fine singing (particularly in the spectacular Vergene Bella, sung solo to a fiddle and rebec). The only person who is perhaps not up to the highest standards is countertenor Timothy Penrose, although his singing is definitely adequate. On balance, a very satisfying release.
