Product Description
Lucilla Galeazzi has performed in theater groups, semi-classical ensembles and folk music revivals, but it was her work with Philippe Eidel’s Mammas project that brought her recognition around Europe and the U.S. There is a modern edge to Galeazzi’s music, full of contemporary references that never overwhelm the traditional sound of the music.

5 out of 5 stars The best recording of this piece.......2007-04-04

This is by far the best recording I've ever heard of The Four Seasons. It isn't rushed, it doesn't drag, the pauses and ritards are just perfect, and the musicianship of the Pinnock and Standage is superb.

3 out of 5 stars Mechanical and Unimpressive.......2005-10-09

Trevor Pinnock is one of the leaders in conducting German Baroque pieces such as Bach's and is a reknown performer for Bach's harpsichord works but his skilled discipline is a diservice to his conducting Vivaldi or Italian Baroque pieces as he conducts from the harpsichord from where he is conducting Bach and not Vivaldi. This is still not the worst interpretation in the countless recordings presently on the market (almost all of which are simply horrible) but it is certainly not one of the best ones either.

Pinnock and The English Concert come more from a German Baroque background and emphasize their techniques of precision too much as opposed to emphasizing on the free lyrical requirements of this particular piece. As a result, they sound as if they are struggling with the piece instead of actually playing its lyrical imagery. The performance is sluggish and slow when the piece actually requires a more feverish interpretation. The ensemble mostly sounds like its losing its tempo as a result.

The spotlight reviewer claiming that he/she heard almost all renditions of 'The Four Seasons' has obviously not heard of I Musici di Roma or their 1982 performance with Pina Carmirelli. Although I Musici sacrifices some of the more archaic Baroque techniques for Italian Romantic ones, they pretty much stay with traditional Baroque forms and perform almost exclusively on Stradivarius instruments that are incomparable in their quality and range of sound. The strings in Pinnock's performance here may play a original period violins but they are certainly not Stradivari: there is simply no comparison. The lead violist, as with Pinnock also seems more to have more training in German Baroque than Italian and this also undermines their overall performance of this work. In comparison to Pinnock and his Bach background, I Musici are unquestionably some of the best Baroque musicians in the world particularly for Italian High Baroque such as Vivaldi. They have been around for 50 years and have been praised by Toscanini as being singularly the best Baroque ensemble in the world. Another very good Stradivarius performance is by Salvatore Accardo and I Solisti delle Settimane Musicali di Napoli. Accardo had actually played this piece with I Musici before but this is probably his own best performance as a soloist for this piece. Despite Accardo's phenomenal talent for Vivaldi, I have found really no better work than Pina Carmirelli's 1982 performance. Superior to Accardo in mood, clarity, and continuity, it simply leaves Trevor Pinnock's rather pedantic performance shamefully in the dust along with all others that are out on the market as the differences are exponential.

5 out of 5 stars The best Four Seasons ever!.......2005-09-07

Nothing I've heard about this masterpiece is comparable to the Pinnock and Co. performance. A joy for the ears, soul and heart. A piece everybody wants to have in her/his collection. I like also the sound of this CD.

This work will be a reference for many years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Thrilling, improvisational, and tightly synchronized.......2005-03-23

To most people, Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" is the ultimate example of wallpaper music, fit only for pretentious wine and cheese soirees and background music in TV ads. And sadly, there are many bland performances on the market that vindicate this stereotype, draining these four fascinating concertos of their exceptional color and vitality.

To counter this stereotype, some performers misguidedly drench The Four Seasons in anachronistic emotionality, overwhelming Vivaldi's textures with orchestras that are too large, tempos that are too plodding, and drippy romantic-era flourishes that gum up the works. The best performances are more subtle, bringing out the improvisational quality of the solo violin writing, the vividness and delicacy of the nature-painting, and the buoyancy and tenseness of the ensemble writing throughout.

This CD is such a performance! In this pathbreaking digital recording from the 1980s, Trevor Pinnock and his ensemble, fronted by the phenomenally talented violin soloist Simon Standage, deliver unparalleled drama, delicacy, and virtuoso showmanship. "Spring" is childlike and stately; "Summer" is languorous and vaguely ominous; "Autumn" is jaunty and free-spirited; and "Winter," the climax of the cycle, is performed with almost psychedelic clarity--the falling rain is almost tangible in the slow movement, and the edgy, improvisational final movement is so vivid you can practically feel yourself slipping on the ice as The Four Seasons approaches its furious close.

Throughout the performance, the English Concert accompanies Standage with almost frightening precision, and Standage's solo runs are simply breathtaking in their speed and communicative tension. No other performance of the Four Seasons combines such well-balanced sound with such incredible virtuosity.

In sum, highly recommended!

P.S. I suppose I neglected to mention that this is an "original-instrument" performance. I really don't care much about that either way; the whole debate is pretty pretentious. What I like is a great, communicative performance--period! However, if the "authentic" sound will bother you, I recommend Neville Marriner's 1970 performance of The Four Seasons with the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. It has the rounder, warmer sound of modern instruments but captures much of the buoyant, improvisational quality (and dramatic tension) that is so crucial to these works. Most importantly, it respects the balance of the baroque orchestra, bringing out the drama and color that Vivaldi wrote rather than ladling soup all over it. It's really a wonderful performance, and it's pretty cheap too, last time I checked.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but check out Pina Carmirelli's version too.......2004-07-22

The review of this version of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons (Simon Standage with The English Concert directed by Trevor Pinnock) dated December 22, 2003 by "A Music Fan" from San Diego, CA mentioned that you might want to check out the I Musici version too. (S)he is right. But (s)he misspelled the name of the soloist, Pina Carmirelli, causing me to hurle invective at the computer until I finally tracked it down. It's the version dated October 25, 1990, on the Philips Digital Classics label, ASIN: B0000040VO. And yeah, it's a doozy. You might want to own both. They're intriguingly different.

This double-disc treat covers Morricone's work from 1965 to 1995 and contains mostly never-before-released material from 40 different motion pictures, many of which demonstrate his quirkier side. Many are from less-known films like To Forget Palermo and What Am I Doing in the Middle of the Revolution? But there are also more famous tracks like the main titles to Cinema Paradiso and My Name Is Nobody as well as the haunting "Chi Mai" from Maddalena. Though best known for his much-imitated and oppressively cute spaghetti-Western themes, Morricone here demonstrates his much more intriguing romantic and melancholic sides. His title song to Farewell to Moscow is among his saddest and menacing works and, like several other selections, can be the preferred antidote to Prozac. --Joseph Lanza

    Album Description

A composer whose name is synonymous with all that is good about film music, Ennio Morricone has had a revolutionary impact on the way films are scored, especially in his most celebrated genre: the spaghetti western. Born November 10, 1928 in Rome, young Morricone studied at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory, where he became an accomplished trumpeter.

5 out of 5 stars Fine compilation, arranged by the Master himself.......2005-11-26

It seems that no one compilation captures all that's great about a musician, but this is probably the best Morricone compilation yet put out there. Morricone took several of his most beautiful film scores and arranged them for these performances, many of them for chamber-music formats. The standard Once Upon a Time themes are here, along with Gabriel's Oboe, Cinema Paradiso, and a gorgeous new arrangement from the Lolita soundtrack. Other greats to which I was introduced here include "Metti, Una Sera a Cena," "Rampage," and "Romanza." Even inadequate 30-second samples give a glimpse into the great beauty of these works. Disc 1 actually is the same as another Milan release, "Ennio Morricone: Film Music," but for a few dollars more (heh heh) you can get a fuller overview and further glimpse into his musicality on disc 2. Highly commendable.

This recording of The Four Seasons sold something like 50 billion copies in France. Now, I know that's not necessarily a recommendation. After all, this is the country that thinks Jerry Lewis is America's greatest film star. But in this case, they have a point, because here is a sensational recording of the fabulous Four. The secret of making a great new recording of music that you've heard until it drives you crazy lies in the performers' ability to make the music sound fresh. That's exactly what Biondi and his forces do. To listen to this record is to realize that classical music is what it says it is--great art that constantly reveals something new when subjected to vibrant and original interpretation. One more for the CD shelf! --David Hurwitz

3 out of 5 stars Good but not my favourite..........2000-04-25

this recording is good....but i only find the spring concerto on top form in this album...I actually like the summer finale....and the winter finale.... but I found the album sounded very mucky at times...the first movement of winter...my favourite piece in the world was very very dissappointing...not enough life and passion in it. And on another note the four seasons sound best in modern pitch...as in vivaldi's time, northern italy had a pitch closer to today's than the lower pitch of ther rest of europe....the key is very importatnt in depicting moods and this recording was made when most people thought all of europe had a lower pitch. Out of the authentic instrument recordings that i have my favourite is the nils-erik sparf (which is however in the lower pitch) the others being this one and the one by il giardino armonico. However in his other vivaldi recordings especially of L'estro armonico biondi is stunning....

5 out of 5 stars the one to choose.......2000-04-25

I have a large music collection (over 10,000 recordings) and have heard most of the "name" versions of this work. While I must admit, I have outgrown some of my enthusiasm for the 4-seasons due to the number of times it is played, this performance demands hearing. It is breathtaking. Indeed, when it was first released, I ranked it as my favorite album of the year. At the price, it can't be beat.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing prepared me for this!.......2000-02-05

H.C.Robbins Landon has written that the Four Seasons is now the most often heard piece of music in the world. And why not? It's pleasant enough stuff, but not exactly heavyweight.

Fabio Biondi shoots that theory to pieces. He and his band have given us a Seasons so passionate and so powerful, that it will be impossible ever again to think of Vivaldi as a lightweight. This is, as they say, the real deal.

      5 out of 5 stars extra creamy.......2000-01-18

probably the most expressive version i've ever heard. biondi is really amazing.

5 out of 5 stars rich creamy goodness.......1999-11-27

if youre favorite movement is the excellent summer 3 (presto) then you may be disappointed. for the most part biondi goes for all out speed at the price of depth, and some of the more interesting parts of the movement are drowned out by the wailing harpsicord. its still a very interesting interpretation (i just like others better eg mutter or accardo). the movement is only really only disappointing in comparison to the rest of the disc, though.

the 3 summers are in general mostly highly inventive and expressive, often technically astounding. spring 2 is played *unbelievably* well. very emotive and as creamy as it can possibly be. it is one of the best played movements in all the classical i know. the autumn movements have always struck me as a bit haughty. but biondi makes them more than tolerable, and now i must reconsider my whole take on them. the first movement of winter is genius. the set of winter movements together makes more brilliant interpretive twists and turns than i can count.

if it wasnt for the not-that-great presto movement, id put my money on this disc as the best 4 seasons nomologically possible. it's probably the best disc out now, though i havent heard annie-sophie mutter's seasons (outside the presto, that is).

      5 out of 5 stars A Legendary Performance.......2005-10-12

Salvatore Accardo is a dynamic violinist who specializes in both Italian Baroque and Paganini. His performance here is demonstrative on the range of his talents and his mastery of both the Italian Baroque and Romantic styles of violin. His performance on a Stradivarius for this piece simply adds to the resonance and clarity of his playing. The fact that he can play a Stradivarius so well is already the mark of his quality as a performer as many professional musicians often find themselves in slippery territory with this unique instrument.

There is also another epic performance that is either equal to or surpasses this one and it is Pina Carmirelli's 1982 performance with I Musici for whom Acardo had also performed various works including 'The Four Seasons' before in the '70s as a soloist. I Musici also uses Stradivarius strings and are equally comparable if not better than the performers here. In either case, both performances are two of maybe no more than twelve epic performances that are worth listening to: the rest is not even worthy of being called average and so worth neither your time or money. Pieces by Perlman or other similar virtuosos are not really comparable as there is a great difference between traditional chamber ensembles of 14 to an orchestral symphony having 100 or more performers that usually accompanies their performances. The accompanying instruments are also all modern usually. Although great in their class, I tend to be a Baroque purist as a listener and, under those standards, such virtuosos fail to match Accardo or Carmirelli because they are not specialists in the Italian style generally and the Italian Baroque one least of all. Such virtuosos have great interpretations of Baroque works in their proper specialties which are the German and Polish Romantic traditions such as those of Beethoven and mostly Joseph Joachim. They are also virtuosos of the unique Jewish Klezmer tradition of violin that has much in common with the Gypsy and Polish traditions of violin but very little with even the German Baroque method.

In the category of traditional Baroque Italian performances with period instruments then, in terms of both utmost quality of performance as well as recording quality, this is pretty much one of the top five without question and the rest of the remaining four would probably mostly be filled by I Musici and the countless Italian prodigy soloists such as Accardo himself and Pina Carmirelli who have performed with them over the course of the last 50 years. There are a few other traditional performance groups from Venice, Milan, or other Italian cities that are worth exploring in their traditional intepretations of Italian Baroque as well. It is good to see this performance as still available since Carmirelli's performance is unfortunately becoming exceedingly rare and often absurdedly expensive.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2005-08-12

Salvatore Accardo on Stradivarius violins... couldn't believe it when I found it on cassette in Italy in 1988, and it quickly became my favorite Four Seasons.

I've been waiting for YEARS for Philips to release it on CD and now it's finally here! One of the best violinists on several of the best violins ever made. What more needs to be said?

5 out of 5 stars One of the most beautiful sound ever recorded for this piece.......2005-05-20

Crystal clear Salvatore Accardo sound on Antonio Stradivari's violins.
Many famous Stradivari violins were chosen by Maestro Accardo himself to be the best to express the subtleties of each movement of the 4 Season's concerto.

One of the "Must have" for violin lover.

This recording has gotten extremely positive reviews, and I feel
that it more than lives up to them. The Concerto Italiano plays with extreme sensitivity, and with unparalleled sweetness. Everything about their handling of accents and phrases really *is* unlike others'. They tend to linger in the moment, especially the violins, and announce the beauty of moment after moment. This is definitely not for everyone, understandably, and if you are in a musical hurry, this is decidedly not the recording for you. But if you would rather sip a glass of wine than gulp a beer, I think this might just be the merlot you've been looking for.

          Album Description

Lucilla Galeazzi has performed in theater groups, semi-classical ensembles and folk music revivals, but it was her work with Philippe Eidel's Mammas project that brought her recognition around Europe and the U.S. There is a modern edge to Galeazzi's music, full of contemporary references that never overwhelm the traditional sound of the music.

5 out of 5 stars italian grace and power.......2007-04-18

this is a rare voice. Totally transorting and flying into incredible heights. Touching, emotional, happy; everything is "out there", in the glory of womanhood and power. A true inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Una stella luminosa dell'Italia!.......2006-02-16

Lucilla Galeazzi is a shining star in Italian folk music, possessing as she does a soaring voice and an affiinty for traditional songs. She has the power of someone like Mariah Carey with the classically trained control of someone like Frederica von Stade. This CD collects some of her best work from three previous albums, two of which are difficult and one of which is near impossible to find in the USA.

Highlights include "Voglio Una Casa" and "Trema La Terra", both written by Galeazzi, along with three versions of "Notte Scura" that will knock your socks off.

Galeazzi is a world-class talent that must be heard: she simply cannot be appropriately described. This is a great introduction to her, and is highly recommended.
