Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Quite Groovy nu-jazz/Brazil group with singers.......2005-11-02

Looking at the other reviews, I have to agree with 'borders' that this is really good Brazil/nu-jazz songs. Maybe it's not meant to sound like 'pure Brazilian music,' that's why the other reviewer complained - it does have a little nu-Italian flavor. But I like it as much as lots of other recordings in this style. Absolutely zero information is given on the band in the notes, but some of the voices sound like Airto and Nina! (probably not, but they have that voice quality). There's not a bad song on it - they may not get gigs in Brazil (though I think they would), but they could be big hits with Europe and US crowds. As 'border' pointed out, the problem is that occasionally the singers are a bit out of tune, but I can live with it.

1 out of 5 stars Very mediocre Brazilian music.......2004-02-24

If you don't know anything about Brazilian music they might fool you. They are trying to do something cool, but they fail in the attempt because of the poor harmonic structure of their songs. The rhythms are OK, in the sense that the percussionists know what they are playing, but overall it is not very good music. At the end the album is not even cool, it's very mediocre. In Brazil they wouldn't get gigs. Maybe because they are from Europe they got this record contract.
On the positive side, there are a couple of OK tunes, that have been remixed and sound much better, like Banda do Ile, but in the album they don't shine that much. I am sorry Banda Favela, nice try! Maybe in the next one...

4 out of 5 stars Good Bossa, Great Feelings!.......2003-11-11

I found this one over the weekend and love it. Banda Favela... "band of the slum" (Brasil). You can be the judge of this but given a few track titles, like "Clean Water", I think the message is clear. This is a group that features on the Irma label, a label that has great jazz, Italian jazz, world jazz and all sorts of different compilations and chillout/lounge CD's. Their catalog is huge and their artist base is tremendous. Banda Favela can be heard on Sister Bossa compilations done by the Irma label. According to Irma, they are a: "Brasilian/Italian combo that have been active in Italy for over eight years. They combine popular Brasilian music with the new Club music trends. The album has been recorded entirely "live""

This CD is a little challenging to describe but one thing is for certain - this group really enjoys the music they make! They go in and out of folkish Brazil, then into a little electric samba, and then there's some samba ingredients along with a light-hearted, fun and festive attitude. Notable cuts to me were Samba De Ile, Cuiquinha, Samba 2150, Grao De Trigo. Samba De Ile was interesting because I only heard the WaiWan remix first - but after listening to the original, you can see just how much the remix complements that track. The original was a track that was basically begging for a dope beat to be dropped on it - the song itself was alive and waiting to be released. Samba 2150's probably my favorite cut, mixing in and out of styles and the singer's voice, I love it, so full of attitude. My only problem with this cd was that some cuts were cut short for some reason... for instance Neguinho's ending was faded out when the end on Sister Bossa was full. And to be honest, some songs, the singers are off key.

And that is a good way of describing a few tracks on this CD. Great original concepts and cuts which made for and will make for good remixes in the future. I recommend this CD - it is a fun CD to listen to and a few of the tracks feature really cute female vocals. Also - there is little information on it but Banda Favela does have another feature release out there (not just on vinyls) but oh, it's very hard to find! And if you enjoy them, you may also like Bossa Nostra or Nouvelle.
