The best complement to Master Serie Volume 1.......2001-05-28

After buying the excellent Master Serie Volume 1 of Jane Birkin, the new fan of Birkin soon realise that some important songs are missing to his collection, "Les Dessous Chics", "Amour des feintes" or "L'aquoiboniste", for exemple. Those tracks can all be found on this Volume 2, which turns out as a good fellow to the first CD. The overall result of this compilation is good, although it may not have the consistency of the first one. Also, the last album, "Amour des feintes" is maybe notn represented enough - the biggest lack may be "Et quand bien même".

The best in 80's French pop music.......2000-01-25

Daniel Balavoine is indeed not your typical singer. He is a maverick of changing styles, but one thing that stays consistent are his strong melodies and profound lyrics. This title is the second volume of his greatest hits, the majority of which are set in the 80's. One hears a big change in orchestration from the first volume of mostly 70's songs. Here Balavoine fuses ethnic percussions and vocals with sophisticated electronic textures, yet still manages to generate a great rock sound. Some songs resemble electronic new wave classics (Eurythmics or Soft Cell) while others are more Rick Springfield in spirit. Yet some are just simple songs to chill out to. This is a great cd for those who want to be introduced to modern French pop, and a majority of the songs in this cd are part of the essential cannon of hits remembered by most young Frenchmen today. One wonders how his music would change had he not died tragically in a helicopter accident in 1986.

Go, Johnny, go.......2003-01-31

This album has two of his really superbest songs: "Retiens la nuit" and "Pas cette chanson" (Don't play that song). Retiens is this real beautiful French oldie, that brings back so many memories for someone growing up in the early 60's. And Johnny's still singing - he's been having kind of a comeback in the last 10 years. And the concert by the Eiffel Tower a couple of years back for fantastic!
