Editorial Reviews

From Rhythm Magazine
Led by Vassili (lead vocals, Native American flute, guitar, strum stick) and Eric Jaeger (Flamenco guitar, bouzouki, vocals) and joined by nearly a dozen bandmates, Children of the Revolution blend several genres, seeking to create a commingled whole. The Seattle-based ensemble mixes Flamenco, Greek, Middle Eastern, and Native American influences into sound and dance. Describing itself as "the world on one stage," Children of the Revolution was the first-ever Western group to perform in Taiwan, before 30,000 for the Buddha's spiritual birthday. On its eponymous debut, the band performs instrumental and vocal arrangements, sung in Greek, Spanish, and English. "Rumba Athena" blends two strong Mediterranean styles-Greek lyricism with the so-danceable rumba rhythms (now mostly associated with Spain). "Technoflamenco" also derives its core stylings from Iberia, while incorporating Euro-techno textures, reminiscent of some of Ottmar Liebert's tracks. "Yanni Mou" is a heartfelt a cappella piece based on a folk song from the mountains of northern Greece. This album will appeal to fans of groups like the Portuguese ensemble Madredeus; of such rumba flamenco-derived artists as Lara & Reyes, Jesse Cook, Govi and Liebert; and of neo-traditional Native American music. -Robert Kaye

Product Description
Having their live performance described as an Eastern Mediterranean Riverdance, this debut CD combines the power and emotion of flamenco guitar, Greek and Middle Eastern vocals and instrumentation, and epic world music landscapes including Native American flute. Sung in Spanish, Greek and English.

They can loosely be compared to such breakaway and high-energy world music artists such as Ozomatli, Gipsy Kings, Santana, Manu Chau and the Afro Celt Sound System, but all similarities stop there. Made up of virtuoso musicians, singers and dancers from around the world, COTR blend their Flamenco, Greek, and Rock roots creating, a lush and melodic sound driven by infectious Latin and Middle-Eastern grooves.

      4 out of 5 stars Uplifting.......2004-06-07

I attended my daughter's elementary school event, "International potluck". We ate food and watched kids' dance from other cultures. Then this band took the stage. I thought they were one of those struggling bands who were all balistas at Starbucks during daytime. My daughter's classmate's mother came up to me and said, "I don't care about the potluck. I came to see them!" I was like "OK, who are they?" The music began and boom!! I was totally fascinated! The gitar, the dance, the harmony and the sound of unknown language. I had never been into World Music, but my body started to move and I felt passion!! I really really enjoyed the music, dance and the natural charm of the band members. My 9-year-old and my husband insisted we purchase their album at the end of the concert. My daughter picked up an album randomly and the singer Vassili said, "no, no, this is better" and recommended this album. Now both of my daughters are singing at the top of thier lungs, "Kalimera~,Kalimera~" all day. I love Kalimera, Burnt Sugar, Broken Pieces, Angeles De Bolivia, Liberation, Road Song, and Take Me Home. I guess too exotic music is not for me. The ones I like are all not too exotic. They are passionate and compassionate and somehow soothing at the same time. Thank you, Children of the Revolution, to come to our elementary school for your brilliant performance. I still cannot believe such a wonderful group came to our school cafeteria!!! Even though one is not into World Music, he/she will like this album for sure. I think the best way to enjoy their music is, however, to see them perform first, then buy CDs.

5 out of 5 stars "The World on One Stage" never sounded so good.......2003-12-28

The first time I heard Children of the Revolution on stage I could hardly believe what I was hearing and seeing. Here, at last, is a band that brings together the eclectic sounds of the world that I love and presents them credibly as a seamless weave of passion, music and dance. Drawing together performers as diverse as their instruments and nationalities, Children of the Revolution lives up to their claim as ýthe World on One Stage.ý When performing, they live out their mission to promote unity through music, creating harmony from such divergent combinations as a Greek lyric soprano opera singer and a Joplineque folk/punk singer from Venezuela, a flamenco dancer from Barcelona and a flamenco singer from Japan, a Fijian tabla flayer and a Turkish dumbek player, a Greco-Egyptian belly dancer and a Broadway violinist.

The strongest musical threads in their jaw-dropping breadth of sound are Greek, Spanish flamenco and Arabic, but donýt be surprised to hear hip-hop, Gypsy, Django-style swing, ska, and South American folk music among other forms conjoined in an eccentric amalgamate that distinguishes their unique style. The range of instruments played with virtuosity would make an ethnomusicologistýs head spin. Stringed instruments from the Greek bouzouki to the Turkish saz and baglama to the Venezuelan cuatro are played over a foundation of rhythm from percussion ranging from the Egyptian dumbek to Latin congas and Indian tablas, and rounded out with wind instruments like the Australian didgeridoo, the Bolivian zampoña and the North African/Arabian nay.

My friend Wakefield Gregg was so taken with Chapter One, a song from their previous album about loveýs ultimate sacrifice, that he decided to commission the group to write a song about the life and death of his friend and my late wife Krista for the Krista Foundation for Global Citizenship. [www.kristafoundation.org] Vassili and Eric Jaeger, who co-wrote the song, brought true artistic integrity to the project. They sought out and interviewed several of Kristaýs closest friends, they read her poetry and looked over dozens of photos of her life. Wakefield and I talked at length with Vassili and Eric over the course of several weeks, filling in the story and imagery they were exploring as they wrote the song.

Now, Angeles de Bolivia is one of the feature songs on their latest album Liberation. Combining the sorrowing sounds of the Andean zampoña and classic guitar, the song opens slow and sad. ýBus from Bañado to Santa Cruz, oh, you were the last to go. In ragged jeans you were a ray of hope. I never got to say goodbye, how could I know.ý The song floats in a slow Latin cadence before exploding into a boiling salsa that would move even the most obdurate mourner to wipe away the tears and hit the dance floor. With solos by flamenco guitarist Eric Jaeger, pianist Julio Jauregui, violinist Geoffrey Castle, and featuring the ragged and beautiful voice of Yva las Vegass backed up by a full gospel choir, the song that begins so deceptively simple and melancholic lifts the listener to her feet and takes her soaring through hope and joy. In it we are reminded that a life well-lived transcends the death that follows, that there are things worth dying for and doing so demands as much celebration as mourning.

As Kristaýs bereaved husband, Iým grateful that a group as talented and thoughtful as Children of the Revolution has written this song. They capture both the sorrow and joy of her story and inspire us to live meaningfully and intentionally. As a lover of great music from around the globe, Iým grateful to have discovered this group of exceptionally capable musicians. Their passion, talent, breadth and depth are both impressive and moving.

      5 out of 5 stars Opa!!.......2001-01-09

I recently had the opportunity to see Children of the Revolution at benefit concert in Seattle for women with AIDS. I was visiting from New York and while I had heard a bit about them I did not know what to excpect. I came away from the show totally impressed. The music was a pleasing contrast of such unlikely songwriting influences as the Gypsy Kings and Simon and Garfunkel. But unlike the Gypsy Kings their music also reflected a strong grasp of their traditional roots. They easily jumped from classic Greek rembetiko music to a heart breaking Siguiriyas(for those of you who don't know, it is a very old and deep form of flamenco) with voice, guitar and dance. Since then I have purchased this CD and it has become a favorite of both mine and my wife. I look forward to hearing what this versitile group will put out in the future.

      1 out of 5 stars Failed "Revolution".......2000-12-13

While I can appreciate their attempt to combine traditional forms of music and push different genres in new directions, it is presumptuous to assume this album is anything other than a collection of overly simplistic and repetitive phrases. The experienced listener can immediately identify that all they are doing is copying the likes of the Gypsy Kings and Ottmar Liebert. They're just jumping on this bandwagon of "new age" music and with fewer tools. I was, however, hoping for something new, but the "Revolution" falls very short.

The tragedy is not in its composition, but the fact that it sounds just exotic enough to capture the imagination of the general public who have never experienced the sorrow of a real flamenco singer like Camaron or heard the true flavors of guitar from someone like Tomatito. It's not to say that taking different kinds of music and blending them together can't be done, but it takes a bit more to do that. Spend your money elsewhere and try a band like Curandero or some of Al DiMeola's work if you want to hear a real mixture of music from different cultures.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD, but they're even better live.........2000-10-12

Albums are a funny thing. It seems that there's plenty of bands out there who can put together a good sounding album in the controlled environment of a studio with infinite remixes, takes and fades. But giving that same level of performance to a live audience is what sets the 'musicians' apart from the 'bands'. Children of the Revolution are some fine musicians indeed.

I first heard of them through a friend of mine who was acquainted with the lead singer. Intrigued I bought their CD and was pleasantly surprised with the ethnic variety of music which varied from driven flamenco guitar to vocal solos. The entire disc is a gem, a keeper through and through and one that my friends invariably love when I play it for them. Many of the songs are sung in other languages, but that doesn't take anything away, their meaning is all too clearly spoken through the music.

I recently saw them live locally... and I left even more impressed. They put on a killer show in all respects. Incredibly good balance between the instruments and vocals, with flawless performance on all fronts. You really need to see them in person to appreciate the music to it's full extent, and see their flamenco and belly dancers as they add visual delight to the already incredible experience. It was a fun show as well, they drew the audience in and by the end everybody was participating and having a good time enjoying the music.

I have no doubts that these guys will go far, they are extremely talented, approacheable and put on amazing shows with their truly unique blend of world music. Highly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars If the Gypsy Kings had talent and soul..........1999-12-14

they would hope to aspire to some day sound as good as this. They'd probably never get this good.

After having seen these guys live I bought their CD, knowing that the recording would never match the performance. I was pleasantly surprised. 'Children of the Revolution' have a distinct, and unclassifiable sound only gets better with age. Most CD's begin to tarnish well before the hundredth listen, not this one. Vissili's lead vocals are incredibly moving, as is the passion in Eric Jaeger's guitar. The group as a whole has a great amount of intuition and play together wonderfully.

I feel fortunate to have stumbled upon this group at such an early stage in their career. If enough people hear them--or see them live, I feel quite sure that I'm going to have to stand in line for tickets to see their sold out shows in the not so distant future.

          Album Description

This is a 45 track, 2 disc compilation of Marc Bolan's entire career. If he were alive today, he could fill the post of headmaster at the celluloid School Of Rock. Iconic from head to toe, Bolan's glam image, on-stage theatrics and blistering pop songs helped soundtrack the first half of the 1970's and have inspired many ever since. Rarely less than vital, unlike most of his contemporaries he even harnessed respect from young punks, as the tastes of the decade mutated and his late 70's TV show 'Marc' became essential after school viewing. Children Of The Revolution celebrates the magnificence of the man. Features sleevenotes by former Blow Monkey Dr. Robert, who like Bolan, is no stranger to eye make-up, throwing shapes and the allure of a pink feather boa! Music Club. 2005.

Jimmy Bell (AKA Jimmy Bean) and his Son Chad (11 years old) have been writing and recording songs with kid themes for the past couple of years. Jimmy has played music in various bands since the mid eighties and when his Son started becoming interested in music he felt this would be something they could do together. All the songs are kid friendly, with crunchy guitars, drum machines, synthesizers and more. "Silly songs about silly things" is their latest release. Songs about monkey's escaping from the zoo to be on Solid Gold (a dance show from the 1980's), a kid living in trailer park who's Mom is obsessed with Motley Crue, and his Dad's in the slammer, one kid who loves to eat sweets at every meal until his teeth fall right out of head (and his Mom thinks it's funny), even a song about not playing with matches (or you'll burn your eyebrows off)... Parents, there is even a song about making a #2 (the doody song). Great, rockin', goofy tunes written by a Father and Son! Check it out!! 1 Let's Go! 2 I Played With Matches (now I Have No Eyebrows) 3 Broken Carbon Monoxide Detector 4 Glass Bones and Paper Skin 5 Lil' Rocker 6 Monkey Boy 7 Buddy 8 Sugar Freak 9 Booger Stew 10 I Wanna Grow a Beard 11 Everybody Poops (the Doody Song)
